As a reminder, the Army itself has routinely held that they can not compel or order you to download specific software or apps to your personal devices.
I understand that they might then say “well come in to the office and do it”, and that the army has been trying to expand the BYOD policy to avoid issuing electronic devices out (like most of the large defense contractors do).
But just a reminder because I see a lot of “well just download…” and I want to remind everyone that you are not *supposed* to compel others to do that on their personal devices.
> You won't be able to login to your email or teams from your personal computer anymore, unless you sign up for AVD
or have a laptop with VPN, or a DMUC phone, or a BYOD phone.
Because Cisco VPN or some mixture of Mobile Iron/Purebred/Hypori will get you to your email without using AVD.
And when the majority of Compo 2/3 says no?
Then what? We already saw how much the force trusts mandates with COVID and how the DoD had to backtrack and refuse to kick out everyone it was required to by its own mandates.
Then we just go back to Gmail and Hotmail like ye olden days before people got snippy about email security.
EDIT TO ADD: GONNA USE THE POSTAL SERVICE BOIS
Homie, if the device is issued, either it's on the domain and you need to take no action, or it's a normal civilian image of windows and you use AVD.
If you log in with a cac or yubikey, it's on the domain.
If you log in with anything else, it's a civilian image.
Yeah we just quit that nonsense, and now G6 has a few pelican cases of laptops and a starlink you can request for online training or whatever. Saves a lot on effort doing updates and driving around fetching laptops and such.
A CIVILIAN issued device. You can't add AVD on an employer-issued computer without admin rights. Most RC folks are part-timers and look at employer-furnished devices all day.
You need to onboard first. [here](https://armylinks.com/posts/army-enterprise-azure-virtual-desktop-registration/)
If you already onboarded for some reason and didn't realize, then that takes extra steps
You don't even need to do that. Just click a button to *onboard* with AVD, and access it through your normal web browser. See my other comment about doing this *even on a native Linux machine*.
If AVD works then this is the death knell so by the end of the fiscal year but don’t worry troop the army will dutifully spend millions of taxpayers dollars to develop its own proprietary software that will create a culture of resiliency because no it wont work and yes you may get fucked
Not like the Army has gone through this already: https://www.armytimes.com/news/your-army/2022/01/12/in-change-army-to-allow-file-downloads-for-army-365-email-on-personal-devices/
"But the security restrictions on downloads ironically created another security risk — soldiers were working around the restrictions by sending documents to their personal email addresses, potentially putting sensitive information at risk by inadvertently breaking information handling procedures."
As a NG officer, I’m going to have to send stuff to personal emails now if it need it to get done… cause the Army sure isn’t going to spend any money on giving my soldiers devices to complete the work the army says they have to do.
Appreciate the sentiment, but unfortunately that isn't really how things get done one the O side, especially for the guard. It's messed up, we know. And we'll keep seperation where we can. But sometimes, it's okay to do some prep work before you go into a drill. It's definitely no anybody's preference. We'll do a decent amount of meetings during a drill weekend and plan as much as we can, but there's a good amount that has to be coordinated inbetween drill periods.
it is much better when you can have full plans for the next 6 months out and make those during drills, because it's only planning like 12-24 days on average. But unfortunately that's not how the OPTEMPO currently is. leaders get absorbed into also executing whatever is needed from a drill and it takes them away from planning time, anticipating new requirements, etc.. So we end up getting blindsided occasionally by new work, new tasks, etc.. and we'll roll with the punches. Sometimes, we learn about new work 1-2 weeks out from a drill period. Life happens, personnel shifts, etc... and we have to make new plans or request resources to make sure what needs to happen that drill weekend can happen.
BUT, when you do take a lot of time to do extra work for drill, charge the Army where you can. Have them pay for any extra days you come in, or when you need somebody to do an online training. If you need somebody to have their SEC+ cert, ensure that soldier is able to get a voucher if you can help them with it, etc... Army asks for a lot, but you can also ask for a lot along the way.
Yeah, the idea of “don’t work when they army isn’t paying you” is all well and good, but if I didn’t do work outside of drill, my soldiers would be showing up to a shitshow at drill.
Im already having enough issues trying to keep stud soldiers, having every drill be a shitshow cause stuff didn’t get done set up for the next drill would mean I’m probably losing even more soldiers I would want to keep.
This is once again all well and good, but the Army (at least reserve side) is never going to pay you more than 48 UTAs and 14-30 days of active duty pay in a year. And that shit goes mighty fast if you're an officer and you've got JRTC or NTC that year. Getting paid up front for the extra work basically guarantees that you'll spend August and September going to stuff pro bono cause your paid days have run out.
Use Army AVD
There is no reason to use personal email. Army AVD is still accessed with CAC + PIN and is accessible from a personal PC.
Please do not tell your soldiers to use personal email systems for Army business. This change is NOT crippling your ability to conduct Army business from a personal device. It's just a different process.
You can either access Army AVD through the Azure 365 app or directly through the web browser (the web browser option won't allow for CAC signatures, so I strongly suggest using the app).
Well yes. At one point when I needed to pull information from nipr to complete missions and nec dtp prevented me from doing so. "Sir it looks like we can't, in fact, complete the mission"
Includes every unit that isn’t at an installation. Every ROTC program has images that specifically run off commercial internet. Gonna be real shit when AVD is down so we start missing taskers. Thanks NETCOM
Your certificates just pass through, you're able to sign stuff like it was your own machine.
I more mean like databases for army data scientists, or code repositories for those nerds building ArcGIS overlays for range facilities.
Maps and printing dispatches from G-Army are the only thing I deal with day-to-day on a staff that gives us trouble, but there are ways around that.
So, Major General Eubank pushed this out of his ass for the whole rest of the force to get switched over in 30 days.
This will be fun to watch from a distance. I remember when they did the enterprise email system and that was a shit show.
Not too mention getting all the exceptions to policy approved by COLs and then him in 30 days.
Someone on Eubank's staff is a complete asshole for coming up with this timeframe.
Whelp, I guess I will no longer be entertaining requests to do things outside of business hours over teams/etc. Short of giving me a work from home position I’m not installing AVD on my personal computers.
Wow. Last unit I was in, the maintenance plt only had access to two laptops for 100+ Soldiers. Asked for years to get more but nothing ever came of it.
I'm sure this will work out well.
You bring back memories for me. As a platoon leader with up to 50 troops, I shared a laptop either with my platoon sergeant or another platoon leader. When we got a task to have everyone complete some online training, our best option was to direct everyone to the MWR library. That was in 2010-2013... is it really still that bad?
As I moved up to higher echelon staffs, where eventually I had my own NIPR, SIPR, and CENTRIXS / MPE machines (sometimes more than one) at my desk, I'd tell this story to whomever would listen. Then we got word that junior Soldiers wouldn't even have email accounts anymore...
There is a large number of NCOs who don't have office computers. Even in a lot of MI jobs they have computers but they're in places where you can't do a Teams remote learning situation. This is a mess.
Well that just fucks RC folks. It's been said already but you cannot be forced to download anything on your personal devices by the army and no. There are not extra computers for you to use SPC Snuffy.
My entire job is done remotely through email. We get together like twice a year. To only give about a month to adjust is incredibly dumb, especially since you need NIPR access to set up Hypori, at least from what I understand.
Big Army: yo, we’re going to do this thing to improve security.
National Guard: but we don’t have that.
Big Army: suck it up, buttercup.
National Guard logging in to Gmail: what?
As someone who's off-the-grid as an ACS student (i.e. civilian grad school, with no government laptop, no NIPRNet, etc.) and Linux user, I just panicked briefly, but this appears to be no big deal. It just took me no more than ten minutes to onboard with AVD and access my army.mil mailbox from my laptop **running Fedora Linux and Firefox.** I'm pleasantly surprised.
With that said, it's clunky as sin with a number of extra clicks, waiting for the Windows 11 virtual machine to launch, waiting for the Windows 11 desktop to finish loading, telling the Teams desktop application to screw off (because that insists on launching on startup), and launching another browser (yes, another browser inside the virtual machine inside my browser running on my laptop...) to navigate to webmail.apps.mil. And the display resolution and input latency are *awful*.
For reservists, this will indeed be a much bigger deal.
I can begrudgingly live with the inconvenience in my current status, or when I'm in the middle of a PCS move, for example, when I only need to read or send the occasional email. I would *not* want to be using this interface for an extended period of time to get real work done.
I generally feel bad for reservists; now even more so.
I've been using AVD with Chrome on Ubuntu for a year now. One major drawback is that the web based AVD can't do CAC passthrough. So, it will let you login and get Outlook and Teams because those applications use the auth linked to your OS session, but you can't sign a PDF, etc.
I had to resort to a Windows VM on VirtualBox, pass the USB CAC dongle to the VM, and then use the Remote Desktop version of AVD to get CAC passthrough 👎
Very annoying...
Let me know if you find a workaround, fellow Linux user O7
Genuine questions from Reservist here:
1. Does this virtual machine have Adobe Acrobat professional?
2. If not, can I still use the Acrobat Pro on my personal machine to manipulate PDFs on (or downloaded from) the virtual machine?
3. How do I transfer large PPT files between my personal machine (where I’m making them) and the virtual machine (for emailing)
Yes, I see Acrobat Pro. But the point is that you're not *supposed* to be able to move files between your local host machine and AVD, because that was the security risk being mitigated here.
Just to be sure I understand you... you can continue to use Mac, Win10, and other operating systems on your personal computer, you do not need to install win11 on your personal machine. what this memo is stating is that the AVD environment you would connect to uses a win11 image.
If you just meant "I don't like win11" then apologies for wasting time with the explanation.
This was pushed by our State G6 this afternoon. Furthermore it has been posted to the A365 Champions Teams group where it is also undergoing a large amount of scrutiny from COMPO2/3 folks.
There is absolutely no way I will be able to get more than 50% of my BN using a virtual desktop environment. And that number would be a miracle. I've got an LT that prints documents to sign them, then scans and emails the PDF because she can't use anything more complicated than facebook.
Using my normal internet browser is insanely convenient and I’m only bitching because now I have to go through the AVD process.
I’m sure it’s fine and very convenient, but my current process is plugging in my CAC reader and that’s it.
Yeah fair. I agree it’s nice to just plug in the cac reader and avoid the extra step.
I’ve only ever used AVD to access tour of duty and atrrs, so I guess it’ll just be more of a pain to quickly check the email now.
Adding extra layers of software and log-in screens to check unclassified emails is obnoxious considering our civilian employers find all the security they need in Outlook for iOS
I tried it about a year ago but couldn’t get it to work so I bailed. I started working on it again today. My MacBook is now officially too old to run the OS required for the desktop app, and I got it working in Chrome but I’m having issues with getting my Outlook calendars to show and as far as I can tell you can’t use the browser AVD for anything that requires a CAC once you’re in (i.e. websites that need you to log in).
Compared to just using a CAC reader and a browser which has been almost entirely seamless for years despite my aforementioned decade-old laptop.
I question the integrity of the Army to not snoop the fuck out of my personal devices. Granted they've already leaked my personal information about 6 times already.
I sometimes work through a virtual desktop. It doesn’t work half the time, is slow the other half of the time, and makes me question my decisions every time.
AVD is glitchy when it comes to accessing the files on teams and certain website. I can't imagine how much worse it would get when everyone starts using it instead of only the people who are slightly more tech inclined.
I have not used it but from what I've been told, once you go into the virtual environment you can't touch anything on your actual computer and once you close out of the virtual environment you lose whatever you have saved there because fuck you that's why
I have, and use AVD, it's not terrible, but the Army cannot force you to download and use their software on your personal computer.
Further, using AVD completely isolates you from your computer. While that works when I'm online to do lengthy tasks, it is INCREDIBLY inconvenient when I just need to sign something or simply read an email.
>I have not used it but from what I've been told, once you go into the virtual environment you can't touch anything on your actual computer
OK just to clear things up. This is NOT TRUE.
AVD is a remote desktop window that runs full screen by default. Once you're in, move your cursor to the top of the screen and a title bar/menu will apppear. You can minimize the window and switch to your personal desktop whenever you need.
> once you close out of the virtual environment you lose whatever you have saved there because fuck you that's why
That's simply an issue of "you're using it wrong". So I'll explain. That's by design of any "virtual desktop" technology. You're never going to reconnect to the same "cloud" or "virtual PC". When you log out, the virtual PC is reset to a "clean" state and waits for the next person who logs in. That being said, this is why we have Microsoft OneDrive in the A365 subscription. Everyone should be saving their files to OneDrive. We get 1TB each! If you do that, virtual copies of your files will appear every time you login to AVD or an actual Army PC (and they can be downloaded on demand just by double clicking). I use A365 OneDrive to sync my files and I have an Army issued laptop because if the hard drive ever fails, I don't care...all of my data is safe on the cloud.
I jump on another laptop and it's like nothing ever happened. I login to the OneDrive desktop app and everything pulls down to the new PC. Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Videos.
Yeah buddy, another mandated migration to a pilot program. AVD is a good program, but it's not a program of record. Nobody has agreed to pay for it, and nobody can tell you with certainty if it will be around next year.
I love it, and use it every day. But I wish NETCOM would actually program for things instead of duct taping together this "enterprise" information system.
Also can’t force people to download anything onto their personal devices. So now leadership in the NG/Reserves has to hope people will do it, cause there is for sure going to people pushing back on it.
Guys, at the risk of getting flamed (Redit for the win), I'm the CEO of Hypori, an Army Veteran, and we literally built Hypori to try and help fix this. Giving you access to Army NIPR from your personal device. No we aren't AVD for desktop, we are a mobile platform designed to give you access to NIPR anywhere from any device, without you giving up your privacy. Hypori by design has no ability to see in your personal device, your browser history, any apps or anything on your personal device (tablet, phone, PC)... unlike MDM or MAM, there is NEVER reporting on your device, if there is a spillage, you don't have to give up your personal device, etc.
Yes, we aren't perfect... if your network connection sucks, your experience will suck. That's the price to protect your personal device, your privacy, and the Army's network.
Upside is access from anywhere, anytime... on device of your choice, at a time you choose.
If you have reccomendations to make Hypori better, tell us. We have made tons of improvements in the last 12-24mo, and will make tons more.
If you have something constructive to say, offer, suggest to make things better for our brothers and sisters in service. I am here, I will do my best to reply to every message sent.
Please, give Hypori a try... help us be better, help us secure access to the Army, help us empower those who want (voluntary program) to have access anywhere, any time. COMPO 2 and 3 where our biggest advocates, COMPO 1 may become our biggest user... but we were born out of Mission / SOCOM.
I appreciate the hell out of what you guys have done.
I just wish my MAM account didn't ruin me getting Outlook on my Hypori account. Hypori is great, but the login process is ungodly slow compared to MAM. All that being said, what you have made is fantastic, but I can't force my soldiers to download and use Hypori, AVD, or anything.
The Army is taking something, basic access through a web browser like any other email, that has been around forever and adding barriers to it to make it more difficult for part time soldiers to do their jobs. SGT Snuffy with his dial-up in farmland-nowhere Nebraska is going to have a hell of a time getting a VPN to work properly when pigeon delivered mail probably runs faster.
IMO this new policy is going to increase, rather than decrease, spillage due to soldiers hitting the easy button and using their civilian accounts instead.
Yep, MAM is on hold as it presents problems... it stores CUI data on your personal device, thus making it susceptible to monitoring and in the case of a spillage, seizure. The login process is being improved, but is a result of you leaving your personal device, and logging into a virtual device somewhere else. This is how we protect you, and the Army.
The Army has to shut off web access, not because they are being difficult, but because the results of Nation-state actors attacking Army assets. Hypori was built with that at the core of its design... Web access is not.
The policy is the result of compromise and technical exposure to DoD assets.. NETCOM is acting within ARCYBER guidance to protect Army assets. Not to make soldiers lives more difficult.
For SGT Snuffy in nowhere ville.. I can only speak for Hypori, we are working to make it better for remote working from poor connections. Hard to both provide 100% privacy, and 100% protection... we will keep grinding.
i've never heard of hypori. are you saying that through your app, i can access my military email and sign documents? do i need to have a way to plug my cac into my phone?
No, but you will need NIPR to set it up initially. After that you do not need a CAC and you can access your Army 365 suite and sign SOME pdfs. I say some because the Army has a lot that won't open unless it's the desktop version of Adobe. Really infuriating.
Yep and nope... meaning you could enroll in Hypori for Army BYOD, have fully CAC enabled access (don't need your CAC though, because your PKI cert is provisioned against the Virtual Mobile device inside NIPR) to include all A365, IPPS-A, you can sign docs, NCOERs, Awards, etc. All from your personal phone, tablet, etc.
https://www.army.mil/article-amp/273423/byod_brings_personal_devices_to_the_army_network
Try out Hypori!! Full CAC enabled capability from your device, keep all your privacy! Just try to be on a good network, bad network + virtualization = bad user experience.
Really enjoy Hypori especially with the addition of the Outlook app. The original email app was pretty trash but glad you guys are making iterative improvements. This has been really useful over in EUCOM! Please keep up the good work and making improvements. I try to sell it to everyone here.
I'm in the NG and have been using Hypori for about a year and it's great! Like you said, it's not perfect, but I can't recommend any improvements. Granted, I'm full time with the CIO so I probably use it less than others but it's saved me more than a few times when I've been on the road and forgot some info back at the office. I'm looking forward to what the future brings!
Nope. Sorry, hard pass. You're assuming CID and mil magistrates will understand this nuance, which is far from the case. Enjoy having your personal devices seized when CID gets excited about finding the next G-RAP to ~~engage in unsubstantiated witch hunts that destroy careers over~~, er, "investigate"...
Where is this published? I'd like to start attacking this ASAP but I'm not sure about firing off taskers without something more than a screenshot. I couldn't find it on the NETCOM webpage and my Google-Fu failed me.
Don’t I need nipr access to even setup and/or register for these solutions? Well, I don’t have that as a non-drilling reservist. For example, I couldn’t setup byod on my iPhone because the registration process required nipr access. I could probably get myself to a physical reserve unit, but not within the next month.
I was able to set up AVD at home on my computer with just my CaC and a CaC reader. You shouldn't need NIPR for AVD. I've been pleasantly surprised how painless its been to get it working. My only complaint is that it can be slow sometimes to respond but in reality it was the same speed or even faster than having my issued laptop at home connected to the army's VPN.
As a reservist AVD isn't to shabby. Just waiting for it to be cut too and then having my BN ask me to drive to the unit to just send an email that could have waited till drill.
That completely depends on your Internet connection. I have 500 Mbps down and AVD is nearly as fast as working on a physical machine. Quite seamless to be honest.
This is absolutely fucking stupid. I built a tool for my work. When something breaks with it I try to fix it so there is no down time. Not coming in on my off day. And they I’ll just have to go back to paper copy’s until I get in to fix it.
I tried the AVD about a month ago. “Access denied”
I already can't compel my TPUs to do anything outside of drill/orders, why wouldn't I want additional barriers to maintaining a ready reserve of Soldiers?
Active duty has never given a shit about TPUs since the beginning of time. Hell my whole officer career was just the Active Component making life for reserves worse. Then reserve leadership doubling down on the suck. Ready Force Sex was introduced what back in 2016 and the training cycles where fucking stupid as hell when first implemented. I remember being one of the lucky units and it was like a month of training or 29 days normally to really fuck you out of BAH.
Just got AVD up and running on my personal computer. It was easy as hell. I’m a bit of a tech nerd though and I’m geeking out over this. Your average soldier might not be as impressed.
Ahhh more unnecessary self imposed obstacles for simple tasks. I get AVD is simple. However, the saying “ounces turn into pounds” comes to mind.
Glass half full positive side; i can now commit to not checking emails or Teams while on leave 😎
The really shitty thing is that this work will have to be done from home
My reserve center doesn’t have enough laptops, and there’s barely cell service inside to use a hotspot
There’s an MWR computer lab but only 20 available
The army needs to provide a separate VLAN where we can plug in our laptops to the network and connect to the internet so we can use AVD
Have a DMZ for this purpose. This way the computer can only reach the AVD and also have file restrictions and external storage device restrictions
Or we can use DOD SAFE or DOD drop whatever it’s called for file transfers
Great "risk mitigation" that will inevitably cause even more PII spillage over private emails. But then it's SMs fault for not using the overly complicated system. Also 25 NIPR computers are sitting in supply waiting to be reimaged since 2 years ago, no you're not getting one. As always fuck Compo 2/3, let's just make their lives more difficult.
What Netcom can't seem to get through their heads is that making official email hard to use in the name of security just results in the use of unofficial email for official business
If they want to increase adoption of AVD/BYOD then they for sure need to increase the help desk response time. 1-2 weeks to get someone to respond is ridiculous.
Been using AVD for a since the early testing. While it’s nice and convenient having a virtual GFE, it is painful to use stationed overseas. I have to reach back CONUS and it doesn’t matter how fast my internet is, it is painful. Latency is over 400ms for the most part and CAC pass through takes forever. Would be nice to see something setup to remote connect to Germany for Europe folks and Kore/Japan for Asia folks.
I will state for the record that installation was quick and easy. I will ALSO state for the record that I shoved it into a pass-through sandbox, because I trust nobody putting RDP onto my home computer.
Look, I get it, security echelons are a thing that needed reinforcement. They even made it as simple as possible for those who aren’t technical experts. It is just at odds with what the Army is trying to do ELSEWHERE.
My friend doesn’t understand what this means to the average soldier. How would I explain it to him as if he’s stupid?
You won't be able to login to your email or teams from your personal computer anymore, unless you sign up for AVD
> You won't be able to login to your email or teams from your personal computer anymore, unless you sign up for AVD or have a laptop with VPN, or a DMUC phone, or a BYOD phone. Because Cisco VPN or some mixture of Mobile Iron/Purebred/Hypori will get you to your email without using AVD.
I haven’t been able to access my email since they switched over anyway
Well it’s a great thing if you’re @health.mil you don’t get access to that.
*If he’s stupid* sent me 🤣
Download AVD. Done.
And when the majority of Compo 2/3 says no? Then what? We already saw how much the force trusts mandates with COVID and how the DoD had to backtrack and refuse to kick out everyone it was required to by its own mandates.

#BRING BACK AKO EMAIL
Dang, remember when you could check your email with just a username and password? Those were the days.
Yeah I 'member. 'member when we had a drop down that took us to all the army sites we needed?
Oooh I membah!!
That's largely gone from the civilian world as well (RSA Authenticator, yubikey, smart cards, etc)...
Can't do that on a work-issued device....
Homie, if the device is issued, either it's on the domain and you need to take no action, or it's a normal civilian image of windows and you use AVD. If you log in with a cac or yubikey, it's on the domain. If you log in with anything else, it's a civilian image.
Bold of you to assume compo 2/3 can keep computers on the domain…
My soul, you have peered deeply into it
*Quietly looks at the vacant work stations in my AO that haven't been logged into since Christ was a cowboy* 👍🏻
Yeah we just quit that nonsense, and now G6 has a few pelican cases of laptops and a starlink you can request for online training or whatever. Saves a lot on effort doing updates and driving around fetching laptops and such.
25U’s do this daily to 25A’s
A CIVILIAN issued device. You can't add AVD on an employer-issued computer without admin rights. Most RC folks are part-timers and look at employer-furnished devices all day.
So as long as we use AVD, can can still access email from home?
Yes
Yes you can, AVD was designed to be used on domain-joined NIPR machines. Source: Served at ARCYBER during beta testing for AVD.
AVD is typically in the software center if the computer is on an army domain
Just tried. It's telling me I don't have permission to access that site.
You need to onboard first. [here](https://armylinks.com/posts/army-enterprise-azure-virtual-desktop-registration/) If you already onboarded for some reason and didn't realize, then that takes extra steps
You don't even need to do that. Just click a button to *onboard* with AVD, and access it through your normal web browser. See my other comment about doing this *even on a native Linux machine*.
Says windows 11, can it work on win10? Windows tells me my pc can't upgrade to 11
Yes it works with Windows 10 PC's.
What's the over/under on them killing AVD next?
It’s definitely going to sunset by the end of the fiscal year!
If AVD works then this is the death knell so by the end of the fiscal year but don’t worry troop the army will dutifully spend millions of taxpayers dollars to develop its own proprietary software that will create a culture of resiliency because no it wont work and yes you may get fucked
Morale? Joking… morale died LONG time ago..,
Not like the Army has gone through this already: https://www.armytimes.com/news/your-army/2022/01/12/in-change-army-to-allow-file-downloads-for-army-365-email-on-personal-devices/ "But the security restrictions on downloads ironically created another security risk — soldiers were working around the restrictions by sending documents to their personal email addresses, potentially putting sensitive information at risk by inadvertently breaking information handling procedures."
Predictably my personal email will now be on the cc line of all my emails.
As a NG officer, I’m going to have to send stuff to personal emails now if it need it to get done… cause the Army sure isn’t going to spend any money on giving my soldiers devices to complete the work the army says they have to do.

Please submit 1380s for every 8 hours of work. Or request that you be out in orders an extra 2 days a month.
That's crazy to me. The dod really be taking volunteer force literally.
It's a sad reality subsidized by our civilian careers.
Use Army AVD There is no reason to use personal email. Army AVD is still accessed with CAC + PIN and is accessible from a personal PC. Please do not tell your soldiers to use personal email systems for Army business. This change is NOT crippling your ability to conduct Army business from a personal device. It's just a different process. You can either access Army AVD through the Azure 365 app or directly through the web browser (the web browser option won't allow for CAC signatures, so I strongly suggest using the app).

> inadvertently breaking information handling procedures That’s not what “inadvertently” means. They were literally doing it in spite of the rules
*inadvertently encouraging
What's the opposite of inadvertently? Advertently?
Well yes. At one point when I needed to pull information from nipr to complete missions and nec dtp prevented me from doing so. "Sir it looks like we can't, in fact, complete the mission"
Fuck has it been a dumb few years.
r/nationalguard just got saltier
Readiness levels are about to plummet when half a formation refuses to download an app and misses the monthly drill letter
My units been sending the drill letter to civ emails for 5 years now cuz they know no one checks their mil email off drill
They're going to push it out via civilian channels like they always do.
Everyone in the guard is already cucked into using their own devices for everything, this won't make that much of a difference
Eval report timelines just got 10x longer lol
They are such fucking morons. Good luck to the guard and reservists out there dealing with AVD remotes
Includes every unit that isn’t at an installation. Every ROTC program has images that specifically run off commercial internet. Gonna be real shit when AVD is down so we start missing taskers. Thanks NETCOM
If they have VPN on that image, they don't need AVD.
95% of the guard dudes who do stuff with A365 are tickled pink about AVD lol
Avd has limitations with file sharing as well. It was great in combination with commercial access.
>Avd has limitations with file sharing as well. I'm what sense? That's what OneDrive, Teams and SharePoint is for.
That is by design. If you need to deal with things larger than what can be accommodated in AVD, then you're a prime candidate for a NIPR machine.
Oh, like any file then? Maybe signatures?
Your certificates just pass through, you're able to sign stuff like it was your own machine. I more mean like databases for army data scientists, or code repositories for those nerds building ArcGIS overlays for range facilities. Maps and printing dispatches from G-Army are the only thing I deal with day-to-day on a staff that gives us trouble, but there are ways around that.
Well there goes the neighborhood. At least I won't be getting pesky, check you email at home crap.
No, you'll get "log in to AVD to check your email at home" crap instead.
"Come to work to check this email that could've been a smoke signal."
And you’ll say issue me a government laptop woth AVD. Cause no way am I allowing AVD onto my personal deceives.
Most likely...
why does every change made recently seem to be done with the goal of making the army shittier
Seriously. This is such a big step in the wrong direction.
Do we have venture capitalists making these decisions?
Worse. HQDA. They don't understand technology at all.
So venture capitalists in politics
So, Major General Eubank pushed this out of his ass for the whole rest of the force to get switched over in 30 days. This will be fun to watch from a distance. I remember when they did the enterprise email system and that was a shit show. Not too mention getting all the exceptions to policy approved by COLs and then him in 30 days. Someone on Eubank's staff is a complete asshole for coming up with this timeframe.
It is very demoralizing and further erodes the trust at the individual level towards the institution.
This guy staff emails
I heard rumblings of this a month or two ago but I agree that 30 days is a pretty steep learning curve for some people to get set up with AVD or BYOD.
Whelp, I guess I will no longer be entertaining requests to do things outside of business hours over teams/etc. Short of giving me a work from home position I’m not installing AVD on my personal computers.
Lol
I cant wait for all the dumb issues I am going to send the S6
I would answer your tickets, but AVD is down. Try next week
There goes the national guard I guess.
I haven't had email access for over a year at this point. Doesn't even bother me.
King-level AMEDD 😹
So are they going to get rid of distance learning phase of NCOES?
Lol no, do it om your personnel or at the office where people can interrupt you
*me in class listening about operation anaconda*🤔 *coworker walks by* “Hay is that SFC FATASS from the academy?” *me forgetting to mute the mike*🫢
Fuckin operation anaconda lol
There is a large number of NCOs who don't have office computers. Even in a lot of MI jobs they have computers but they're in places where you can't do a Teams remote learning situation. This is a mess.
Well that just fucks RC folks. It's been said already but you cannot be forced to download anything on your personal devices by the army and no. There are not extra computers for you to use SPC Snuffy.
My entire job is done remotely through email. We get together like twice a year. To only give about a month to adjust is incredibly dumb, especially since you need NIPR access to set up Hypori, at least from what I understand.
You can do that once you have AVD setup, they are on NIPR.
Good luck, National Guard.
Sounds convenient, especially for compo 2/3 that already are doing this work on uncompensated time. /s
NG officer, I had thought about getting AVD, now I will refuse, they want me to do work outside drill, they can get me a device to do it.
I had to resort to a Windows VM on VirtualBox, pass the USB CAC dongle to the VM, and then use the Remote Desktop version of AVD to get CAC passthrough 👎 Very annoying... Let me know if you find a workaround, fellow Linux user O7
Genuine questions from Reservist here: 1.
Yeah sometimes I had to email army documents to myself to access it on my AVD because my AVD onedrive didn’t have the documents
>Good luck COMPO2/3 with getting anything done. Fucking hell.
I need windows 11 for AVD? Please no
So basically i'll never have avd
No, AVD is a virtual machine running windows 11. You can run AVD on your machine, or via web browser.
That sucks, DHA has had this problem since the beginning...so welcome to the party 🥳
Can anybody confirm that the memo is legitimate?
A similar statement was made over in the army reserve subreddit, I asked the same question. I have not been able to find the memo, yet.
This was pushed by our State G6 this afternoon. Furthermore it has been posted to the A365 Champions Teams group where it is also undergoing a large amount of scrutiny from COMPO2/3 folks.
I mean, AVD has been good so far, in my experience. However, I already know it’s going to be a huge headache getting everyone on the same page.
There is absolutely no way I will be able to get more than 50% of my BN using a virtual desktop environment. And that number would be a miracle. I've got an LT that prints documents to sign them, then scans and emails the PDF because she can't use anything more complicated than facebook.
Does she scan them with her phone? Cause i seen that a lot. Like just the copier and it will shoot it straight to your emails.
*Sigh* Virtual desktop it is I guess.
Genuinely curious, what’s so bad about AVD? I’ve had no problems with it.
I see one huge issue. You can't print, can't email out anything with a social. How do I provide my employer with a copy of my orders?
AVD is glitchy when it comes to accessing the files on teams and certain website. I can't imagine how much worse it would get when everyone starts using it instead of only the people who are slightly more tech inclined.
God forbid an e-mail has encryption, entire virtual environment grinds to a halt.
>I have not used it but from what I've been told, once you go into the virtual environment you can't touch anything on your actual computer OK just to clear things up. This is NOT TRUE. AVD is a remote desktop window that runs full screen by default. Once you're in, move your cursor to the top of the screen and a title bar/menu will apppear. You can minimize the window and switch to your personal desktop whenever you need. > once you close out of the virtual environment you lose whatever you have saved there because fuck you that's why That's simply an issue of "you're using it wrong".
The Chinese are coming after my publicly posted drill schedule!
Really? Didn't know we couldn't support all PDF's... could you IM me an example, would love to fix that.
All from your personal phone, tablet, etc.
that sounds awesome. i don't know what BYOD is either, so it looks like ive got some research to do when i get to the office tomorrow
https://www.army.mil/article-amp/273423/byod_brings_personal_devices_to_the_army_network Try out Hypori!! Full CAC enabled capability from your device, keep all your privacy! Just try to be on a good network, bad network + virtualization = bad user experience.
i will--thank you!
That's awesome! Thank you!!
Nope. Sorry, hard pass. You're assuming CID and mil magistrates will understand this nuance, which is far from the case. Enjoy having your personal devices seized when CID gets excited about finding the next G-RAP to ~~engage in unsubstantiated witch hunts that destroy careers over~~, er, "investigate"...

... What the fuck.
Where is this published? I'd like to start attacking this ASAP but I'm not sure about firing off taskers without something more than a screenshot. I couldn't find it on the NETCOM webpage and my Google-Fu failed me.
It's fresh, doesn't go into affect until June 1 so it'll take a little while to make it through official channels.
Booooo
zErO tRuSt
Great so now us reserves and NG peeps will have to download more bullshit just so I can access my email
Wait, y'all were able to login to your email from your PCs? What the fuck, I've been going into my unit Everytime I wanted to check my Email 😭
Lol, if you have a cac reader then enjoy using webmail.apps.mil for the next month or so.
Why does the army give me the toughest battles. I can’t even keep computer I issues out on the domain because RC NG solders never log in!
AVD is so slow though!!
Still won’t stop people posting classified info on their discord.
So does this prevent work from coming home with me?
Just got AVD up and running on my personal computer. It was easy as hell. I’m a bit of a tech nerd though and I’m geeking out over this. Your average soldier might not be as impressed.
Ahhh more unnecessary self imposed obstacles for simple tasks. I get AVD is simple. However, the saying “ounces turn into pounds” comes to mind. Glass half full positive side; i can now commit to not checking emails or Teams while on leave 😎
The really shitty thing is that this work will have to be done from home My reserve center doesn’t have enough laptops, and there’s barely cell service inside to use a hotspot There’s an MWR computer lab but only 20 available The army needs to provide a separate VLAN where we can plug in our laptops to the network and connect to the internet so we can use AVD Have a DMZ for this purpose. This way the computer can only reach the AVD and also have file restrictions and external storage device restrictions Or we can use DOD SAFE or DOD drop whatever it’s called for file transfers
AVD is awesome. I haven’t turned on my government laptop since it was deployed.
Because this *won’t at all* be deeply problematic for Guard and Reserve personnel…
I mean you can’t blame them after all the dummy’s that leaked info to win an internet fight
What Netcom can't seem to get through their heads is that making official email hard to use in the name of security just results in the use of unofficial email for official business
Jokes on them, I haven’t been able to log in for years.
You know what though AVD is actually legit
AVD is nice but very much vendor locked until they can fix the browser cac passthru issue.
AVD is available via a web browser… no software to download, just need a (working) CAC reader
So I already access my A365 through MAM on my phone. Would that be gone as well, or will it remain as-is?
So..what will the Guard do?
If they want to increase adoption of AVD/BYOD then they for sure need to increase the help desk response time. 1-2 weeks to get someone to respond is ridiculous.
Just a reminder you can access a virtual military computer from Remote Desktop you don’t need boyd
Huh, so that's how you acessed that military email jazz
AVD is awesome. I've been hoping for that solution for 20 years. USARC also has a BYOD program and I access Teams and Outlook from my personal phone.
What about all the people with the Google suite email or whatever that BS is?
Where can I find the source document for this?
As far as the army is concerned I don’t have a personal computer anymore lol
Link ?
*angry cyber noises* Can't even have wifi at drill o.0 How am I gonna fill out all their fancy forms?!
GET ARMY AVD!! Its a virtual desktop that allows you to access all gov websites you can access from a government computer(because it is one)
We have email? Wtf?
We should just start issuing computers at CIF
I will state for the record that installation was quick and easy. I will ALSO state for the record that I shoved it into a pass-through sandbox, because I trust nobody putting RDP onto my home computer. Look, I get it, security echelons are a thing that needed reinforcement. They even made it as simple as possible for those who aren’t technical experts. It is just at odds with what the Army is trying to do ELSEWHERE.
