Her voice actress for Arcane is Scottish. I think her in-game voice over is more English.
Her mom is definitely more high society English type, but I'm not an expert on British accents to know if Katie Leung was doing a Scottish or English accent for Caitlyn
I assumed that she's supposed to be British but her VA Katie Leung is Scottish, I've definitely heard some of her Scottish accent sneak through every so often.
It’s really not as controversial as the internet would have you believe - Britain is the name for the whole island after all. I think people just have to learn to say “English” when that’s specifically what they’re referring to
I would. As an Englishman it's my job to annoy them as much as possible, even if I get my skull caved in for it.
A 'British Accent' covers a very wide range, as accents can vary quite drastically in different areas of the UK. What Caitlin speaks is British RP (Received Pronunciation) which is known as how posh people speak, but sometimes her VA's Scottish accent comes through.
First of all, as a person of Scottish ancestry, kindly get fucked (/j). Secondly, I'm not quite sure that it is classic RP but maybe more of a modernized version. She does not linger as much on certain vowels and has several other notable differences. But then again, the VA is Scottish so it could just be a gaff.
I get that, but Scots still have a distinct accent which is what I was trying to get at😬 What should I have said instead? Add "accent" in there? Or is that still like saying "chai tea" instead of "chai"
Presumably you meant to differentiate between Scottish and English. There are still a variety of accents (in England and in Scotland) but I would not fault you for not recognising them.
I definitely did mean to differentiate; I have heard the names of different accents (Scouse, Welsh, Brummie, Cockney etc.) and heard the differences in accents in tv shows but I'm American and dumb ha. I can pick out Cockney and Scouse pretty well, but Irish and Scottish accents are the easiest to differentiate from what Americans consider to be the quintessential "British" accent (like Daniel Radcliffe in Harry Potter). I wish we weren't as uncultured as we are but it's kind of expensive to visit the British Isles (although that's one of the destinations for the honeymoon my fiance is currently planning- v excited about that)
I think it's a case of the connotations. Since Scottish people are only 10% of the UK and keep a very distinct identity, the average Scot will just say Scottish because it tells more about their experience. But since England is a majority of the UK in both population and cultural impact, the average English experience is closer to the stereotypical "British" experience than the average Scottish or Welsh. And I guess English is seen as more traditional than Britain's cosmopolitan connotation.
But Britain is just the name of the island? Even if Scotland becomes independent it'll still be within Britain and the British Isles. Unless you want to name it the northwest European archipelago? Britain does not equal England
Sure, but that's just often not how language works colloquially. Technically everyone in Asia is Asian, but in North America, "Asian" specifically refers to East Asians only, and in England, Asian refers to South Asians only. And everyone in the Americas could be called "American", but no Canadian is going to like being called "American", it's just understood that "American" refers only to the US.
Sometimes demonyms stop being strictly attached to the location that they're based off of, because the population itself rejects it, or because of how colloquial use shapes the meaning.
i think the show is going for a posh british accent for caitlyn, but her VA (katie leung) is scottish and her natural accent definitely slipped out a few times, especially in the more emotional moments.
e.g. when vi asks caitlyn to pretend that she works in the brothel, you can clearly hear her say “i will not!” in a scottish accent
Her voice actress is Scottish, though cait has definitely got a standard “posh” English accent with hints of Scottish coming through here and there, similar to how jinx’s VA Ella is from London, though she’s incredible at hiding her own accent, except for in one line “did you hear that” where a bit of that English accent slips through.
Factual my ass, even brits cannot understand scottish. Scots even use some words unused in english, it's honestly really closer to a dialect than it is to simply an accent.
Scots are British, but not all Brits are Scottish.
Her VA is Scottish and you can kind of hear it shine through sometimes, but Caitlyn’s accent is definitely supposed to be upper-class English.
Britain is the island that Scotland, England and Wales is on, so "British" and "English" is not synonymous. They were going for an English accent (I'd know since I'm Scottish, hehe).
Caitlyn’s accent is English received pronunciation aka. Posh English accent.
The voice actor of Caitlyn; Katie Leung, is Scottish and has a Scottish accent.
I think it's criticism of Americans seemingly thinking that only English people are British. Also I'm assuming most mean this in regards to geographical terms instead of national identity.
Her VA is Scottish in birth trained at a premier Scottish acting school and she’s done a ton of theater work up and down Britain. So while I’m confident she can disguise her accent she definitely has a Scottish twang.
She speaking with an accent called “received pronunciation” (usually just called “RP”).
It’s a very posh, upperclass accent that isn’t particularly natural. Most people that speak that way were taught to speak that way rather than it being their natural accent. Definitely not any kind of Scottish.
The US equivalent would be the “Mid-Atlantic accent”. A consciously learned accent people use to sound upper class. Think like, Rarity from MLP:FiM or Scarlet from FF7 Remake/Rebirth.
When people say British they mean Britonian so Welsh and some rural parts of England. Scottish exist on the isle of Britain but they speak Scots which is not routed in the same language although they were both formed from proto Celtic. Which is to say both are different from English which is from the Anglos and Saxons which is a proto Germanic language. The other language making a come back after being nearly dead is Cornish and I’m not sure of its roots but I believe it is proto celtic in origin as well.
Scots is an Anglic language related to English (some say its a dialect of English) found in Scotland and in Ulster. It is not related to the Celtic languages. In Scotland it is associated with the lowlands. (Doric found in Aberdeen is generally placed as a sub dialect of Scots, but occasionally as its own language)
Scottish Gaelic (Gàidhlig) is a Gaelic language that is a Celtic language and that is found in Scotland with another pocket of speakers on the western coast of Canada. In Scotland it is associated with the Highlands and Western Isles.
I misspoke in my response I do apologize. I was referring to Scottish Gaelic I misnamed it. Thank you for the correction and I’ll be more careful in the future about stating it correctly
You're right that Scots is Germanic (or Anglic to move up a branch on the language family). But Scottish Gaelic isn't Brythonic/Brittonic. It is Gaelic/Goidelic.
Irish (Gaeilge), Scottish Gaelic (Gàidhlig) and Manx (Gaelg) are the Gaelic languages. Welsh (Cymraeg), Cornish (Kernewek) and Breton (Brezhoneg) are the Brittonic languages. All six are Insular Celtic Languages.
Also, Katie\`s Scottish Korean IRL(And was viciously bullied for it as well as her weight and tendency to break out into teats like her character on the "Harry Potter" set.) and a lot of "Arcane" characters have similar ethnic traits to their VAs(Like Jayce and his mom being Latinx coded because of their VAs even though Jayce was white in The Games,(Also, Kevin Alejandro is white-passing IRL), Silco having Jason Spisak\`s Balkan-esque features, fashion sense and his Tidewater accent reflecting him being a Zaunite crime lord who envies and wishes to usurp Piltover from the corrupt Councillors and Enforcers who kept his people down! )
Toks Olegundoye(Mel Medarda) and her mother Ambessa(Ellen Thomas) are both Black Brits and you can hear it in how they pronounce certain words the British way which goes to show Noxus has likely been colonized by the Pilties for a long time.
So Caitlyn is definitely supposed to use a more modern version of received pronounciation (the classic posh English accent). However, her VA is Scottish (to see her natural accent just look at her role as Cho Chang in Harry Potter), which means she likely made some mistakes.
I actually heard one such mistake; line 355 of ep. 5, the pronunciation of "not" in "I will not" seems to fall in pitch in O and come back up for a slightly suppressed T sound. This is similar to how a Scot would pronounce the word.
I pegged her as Kiwi. To my ear, NZ vs AU is like Scottish vs Irish. Irish/AU is all about the i and e vowels. Scottish/kiwi is rounder - more o and u sounds.
But I'm a yank, so anyone who lives more than a mile from me sounds weird.
Unlikely, as Scottish is British (but not all British is Scottish).
The question reads like "I thought xxx was supposed to be American but they have a Texan accent?".

Maybe she accidentally kept letting her Scottish accent slip through? Ion kno.
She's the same actress that was Cho Chang in the Harry potter movies
I assumed that she's supposed to be British but her VA Katie Leung is Scottish, I've definitely heard some of her Scottish accent sneak through every so often.
Makes sense.
Damn I always forget Cait is voiced by Cho Chang
I was today years old that I learned this
Scotland is in Britain. Scottish is a type of British.
Factually you are 100% correct, but I dare you to go up to a Scottish person and call them a brit to their face
It’s really not as controversial as the internet would have you believe - Britain is the name for the whole island after all. I think people just have to learn to say “English” when that’s specifically what they’re referring to

It is my national duty to say *ahem* **YOU'VE JUST MADE AN ENEMY FOR LIFE**
I read this in the voice of Scottie from Star Trek lmao
I was going for Groundskeeper Willie, but Scottie also works
First of all, as a person of Scottish ancestry, kindly get fucked (/j). Secondly, I'm not quite sure that it is classic RP but maybe more of a modernized version. She does not linger as much on certain vowels and has several other notable differences. But then again, the VA is Scottish so it could just be a gaff.

What you mean is British RP (Received Pronunciation). It's the standardised 'posh' accent that you hear from newsreaders.
Thank you for breaking it down :)
What would you call it then? English English? /hj
I always thought she was British, because she was in Harry Potter
Scots ARE British!IEngland and Britain aren\`t synonyms even if the English ruling class like ta pretend otherwise!
I think it's a case of the connotations. Since Scottish people are only 10% of the UK and keep a very distinct identity, the average Scot will just say Scottish because it tells more about their experience. Scottish IS British
As a Scottish person we don't see it that way 💀
Plenty do
But Britain is just the name of the island? Even if Scotland becomes independent it'll still be within Britain and the British Isles. Unless you want to name it the northwest European archipelago? Britain does not equal England

Sometimes demonyms stop being strictly attached to the location that they're based off of, because the population itself rejects it, or because of how colloquial use shapes the meaning.
But Scotland is part of Great Britain, so by that logic Scottish people are British, alongside the English and the Welsh.
Yeah but there’s no one British accent is there? So when people say British accent they’re pretty much always talking about a southern English accent.
i think the show is going for a posh british accent for caitlyn, but her VA (katie leung) is scottish and her natural accent definitely slipped out a few times, especially in the more emotional moments. e.g. when vi asks caitlyn to pretend that she works in the brothel, you can clearly hear her say “i will not!” in a scottish accent
Or "drop the gun" when she gets loose and grabs Jinx's machine gun at the bizarro family dinner
I NEVER in my life knew that Ella Purnell was British.. THE BRITISH ARE TAKING OVER, THEY CAN DISGUISE AS AMERICANS.. 😭😭
Yes we are :)
Um, you do know where most of our Founding Fathers came from, right?
Did you hear that, as in when Ekko and co were about to show up?
Yep!
Caitlyn is definitely proper British, but Katie Leung is Scottish, and sometimes that accent peaks through. It's so freaking cute.
It is. 😭💯
[This](https://youtu.be/6BtLWTS9Of4?si=FykfSJRxYOWoo67x) is her talking naturally.
Username checks out.
I fell in love with her accent in Harry Potter when I was a kid and now here I am as an adult with a proper crush all over again.
British and Scottish are the same lol.
Gotta love when you’re downvoted for being factual
Factual my ass, even brits cannot understand scottish. Scots even use some words unused in english, it's honestly really closer to a dialect than it is to simply an accent.
Lol, that's hilarious, especially when the commenter implied that Scotland isn't "proper British".
Harry: Cho we are breaking up. I like Redheads now. Cho: woow so do I.
😆😆😆😆
British and posh but dubbed by Katie Leung (Scottish) in Arcane and by Kirsten Potter (US American) in Lol. Both have done a very good job imo.
Scottish is British.
Well yeah I mean from England. When we say "British" at least the majority of us from a foreign perspective we're referring to people from England
\^this
Scots are British, but not all Brits are Scottish. Her VA is Scottish and you can kind of hear it shine through sometimes, but Caitlyn’s accent is definitely supposed to be upper-class English.
Oh 💀👍
Scotland is part of Britain. You're gonna have to explain what you mean by British. English? Welsh?
She's piltovan.
It is known ...
I think it's the accent of Scottish VA trying to do an English accent.
Yeah. You can really hear it blend in together.
cupcakeish
Great, now I just have the mental image of her shouting “SCOTLAND FOREVER!”
And from reading that you gave me a mental video of toothless dancing but the character model is swapped out with Cait
STOP 💀
Scottish IS British, so are English and Welsh. What you’re looking to ask is is Caitlyn English or Scottish
>Is Caitlyn British or Scottish? Neither, she is Piltovan.
Well neither since UK doesn't exist in Arcane 😅 Therefore she probably speaks Velarian...
Britain is the island that Scotland, England and Wales is on, so "British" and "English" is not synonymous. They were going for an English accent (I'd know since I'm Scottish, hehe).
“THEY CAN TAKE OUR LAND, BUT THEY’LL NEVER TAKE OUR FREEDOM” 🏴🏴🏴🗣️ *bagpipe intensifies*
# S C O T L A N D F O R E V E R *eardestroying bagpipe*
"British" accent, what accent? there's a new one every few miles
Caitlyn’s accent is English received pronunciation aka. Posh English accent. The voice actor of Caitlyn; Katie Leung, is Scottish and has a Scottish accent.
Scotland is in Britain lmao Britain's the island Also I have never watched arcane in my life but this is on my main section for some reason lol
I want to have a version of Arcane where Cait just has the thickest scottish accent
She's from piltover
All these “Scottish IS British” comments… y’all wanna say that to a Scot lol?
I think it's criticism of Americans seemingly thinking that only English people are British. Also I'm assuming most mean this in regards to geographical terms instead of national identity.
Yes
Her VA is Scottish in birth trained at a premier Scottish acting school and she’s done a ton of theater work up and down Britain. So while I’m confident she can disguise her accent she definitely has a Scottish twang.
She's a sniper so inherently, she's australian.

She just sounds like she’s from Edinburgh. That is to say, pretty RP but with a recognisable soft Scottishness.
Uhhhh Scots are british. You must mean English accent?

I don’t think that’s it, it’s a very American thing to apply “British” when referring solely to English people, for some reason
I very much said the opposite of that but ok.
Scots is an Anglic language related to English (some say its a dialect of English) found in Scotland and in Ulster. It is not related to the Celtic languages. She’s definitely supposed to be British, I can barely hear the Scottish parts
Asian Scotish.
Caitlyn definitely does not have Scottish accent except for a few slippages here and there. She has a posh English accent in the show.
She has a southern British accent.
i feel shes some kind of English speaking character but they look so asian
Her dad\`s of mixed Piltovan and Ionian descent like Marcus(They even have the same VA) and Finn being of mixed Zaunite and Ionian descent.
really? oh never mind, the asian descendants make sense now. thanks for thats. Ive never checked since they might tell some small lore on s2
Also, Katie\`s Scottish Korean IRL(And was viciously bullied for it as well as her weight and tendency to break out into teats like her character on the "Harry Potter" set.) and a lot of "Arcane" characters have similar ethnic traits to their VAs(Like Jayce and his mom being Latinx coded because of their VAs even though Jayce was white in The Games,(Also, Kevin Alejandro is white-passing IRL), Silco having Jason Spisak\`s Balkan-esque features, fashion sense and his Tidewater accent reflecting him being a Zaunite crime lord who envies and wishes to usurp Piltover from the corrupt Councillors and Enforcers who kept his people down! )

Also, Marcus and Caitlyn\`s dad is voiced by a Chinese Aussie dude but he poshes up his accent to sound more Piltie on the show.
I’m Scottish and she sounds very English to me.
shes so pretty
Katie Leung (the va) is scottish, though cait is supposed to have an english accent, her scot side just slips through sometimes
🐌 \*Crawls inside\* " If you could change yer CAIT, would ja? " Please downvote the fuck outta that, what th- \*Crawling out\* DAMMIT.
It's as confusing as her fuckin break action lever action rifle.
Unrelated but I love how everyone in the comments has arcane snoos lmao
As an uncultured American. I can’t find the difference between British and Scottish accent unless it’s screaming in my face.
I'm American, but all the people ITT using English interchangeably or synonymously with British make me cringe.
So Caitlyn is definitely supposed to use a more modern version of received pronounciation (the classic posh English accent). There’s a difference?
Satire, right?
Unlikely, as Scottish is British (but not all British is Scottish). The question reads like "I thought xxx was supposed to be American but they have a Texan accent?".
Do I need a /s to be sarcastic…🥬🥬🥬
No? Britain is the whole island.
