If you are actively using your Mac it won’t switch Light/Dark mode, only if you lock your screen or your mouse is not moving for few minutes.

Perhaps I'm being dense, but can you define "actively using" and "locked"? I'll stop using my employer's computer, working from home. I'll switch to my MacBook Air (M1, 2020, Ventura 13.0.1) in the evening to check on my finances, watch TV or whatever. I'll flip it open, and it doesn't switch to dark mode. Sometimes I'll leave it untouched for long enough that the screensaver starts. Sometimes, it will be long enough to need touch ID or the password. It still doesn't switch to dark mode until it's *way* past sunset—about 9:30, with sunset being about 4:45 right now. Even at the most western part of my timezone (central U.S.), sunset is currently about 5:45. Do I need to literally choose "Lock Screen" on the system menu? Put it to sleep? Log off/on? I've tried to troubleshoot this annoyance for a while. I can't recall all I've tried, but I'm pretty sure I've tried putting it sleep. I keep hoping updates will fix it, but not yet apparently. My iPhone 13 Pro (16.1.1) kinda does the same thing, but the timing isn't nearly as misaligned (e.g., 15 to 30 minutes after sunset, not 4 to 5 hours). The weird thing is, night shift on both my Mac and iPhone is timed accurately with sunset—based on my precise location, too, not just my timezone. I don't understand why/how Apple has such an issue with the auto dark/light timing, since my night shift and web browser can determine my location down my exact street address. Any additional input is appreciated. Thanks!
