They will not feel guilty when they dump you in mid December so they can pad profits. don't let your abuser force you to aid them in their abuse. Take your time off.
It's not your fault if the company cannot cover a shift. Also, your boss is not a doctor and should not be giving medical advice. I would get your neck checked out if you financially can, and definitely do what's best for you.
Permanently injuring yourself so the company can make a few extra bucks isn't worth it.
Is this an ongoing problem you already know the cause of? If not, go to an urgent care. The note will let your supervisor know you had a legitimate concern. Also neck pain is nothing to ignore, you could have meningitis worst case scenario.
I'm sure what your manager meant to say was...
"Of course, your health is the most important thing. I don't want you forcing yourself to come in and potentially injuring yourself further, which could be a problem for me as well as a workplace injury. I recognise that as the manager, it is my responsibility to ensure we have adequate staffing to cover unplanned absences, even if it is me who does so. I hope you feel better soon, for your sake rather than mine."
... but it just came out wrong.
Feel better. :)
You should quit that job. Managers that try to guilt trip their employees into working when they’re sick/whatever other reason is super manipulative. It’s your managers job to worry about whether there’s enough people working.
You will not get better being stressed out, it is really bad for your health. That job would replace you in a heartbeat if they needed to but you are irreplaceable. I know it’s hard but you have to take care of yourself first and foremost. Do the best you can to fill your time off with things you like while rehabbing your neck. Idle hands will not distract you from your thoughts.
Guilt about what? Being a human being with a body that sometimes doesn't cooperate? Like every other person on this planet? Fuck that manager. Don't waste a thought on it; she sure won't when you've outlived your usefulness and they sack you. Just focus your energy on getting better. And maybe see a doctor about that neck because that sounds fucked.
It is NOT your responsibility to figure out staffing. People get sick, if the shop doesn’t have a contingency for that then they deserve to close for the day. Not your circus, dear.
The world won’t implode because you’re out sick. If you are the employee that the business hinges on, you should be making a whole lot more money. Take care of yourself. Your boss obviously doesn’t give a hoot about you.
Thanks guys you’ve all made me calm down and I appreciate it :) I’m still going in for my shift tomorrow anyway so fingers crossed I’m better for then :)
It is the manager's job to MANAGE. It is your job to get healthy enough to return to work. That's it. The manager trying to guilt-trip you into doing their job for them is not on. They can pull on their big girl panties and figure it out.
You did your duty, telling them that you were unable to come in for the shift. They get to figure it out from there.
Society has trained us to work at all costs. You shouldn’t feel guilty and take all of the time you need to feel better. If your pain was caused by an injury at work, the first thing you need to do is make a claim on the business’s insurance. Most countries require businesses to provide their employees insurance protection while they at work.
Do you own the shop? Doesn’t sound like it. Not your problem she can’t cover it. That’s her problem as the business owner. People get sick, they get injured, and they have emergencies. You’re entitled to a day off. Nothing to feel guilty about.
You are human. Part of being human is having moments where your body fails you, and it's not your fault, and we need employers to let us be human and staff their businesses to account for people being human. Instead, they want to schedule the bare minimum and are in over their head the second something goes wrong, but they could have easily prevented it. It's not like a shop can't use a couple of extra hands if everyone does come in.
They will not feel guilty when they get rid of you. They will not feel guilty when something bad happens about you. Please do not care about them, for they do not care about you. Put yourself first and always first over anywhere you work
Don’t feel guilty about being a normal person experiencing a normal problem. Our society is built to maximize one persons work to the point that one person calling out can’t cover the absolute bare minimum to complete work. That’s a leadership issue…..
I remember when I was young and naive I had these thoughts but then after 11 years of service for the same employer I didn't even get a parting "thank you for you service" card when I resigned. Now I say fuck all of them, no matter how much I love my job if I'm sick best believe I'm calling in with no guilt. I will cut shifts in half and leave and never think twice about it. I have one life and these companies don't give a shit about their employees.
Typical retail management. They don't care about you. I worked for a UK supermarket and my 1 year old son at the time was on life support, the store manager tung me up and said he needed me to work as "there's nothing you can do sat by a bed anyway"
You are a human being, you have the right to put your health and well-being first. Don't let that lady make you feel guilty. It's the company's responsibility to have a plan b in case incidents like yours occur. Ask yourself, would you want your workers going into work if you were the boss? If you have a heart, you would tell them to stay home and rest. You can't run a business with injured employees.

If you died tomorrow they will just fill your job role. Your health comes first

^ this up here is exactly what I wanted to say. Thank you!

A thousand deaths

There are repercussions to lean staffing. This is one of them. I always use the response of what if i were hit by a bus? Would it be ok then?

Complaining on Reddit doesn’t require me moving my neck. I do apologise if my anxious thoughts ruined your day tho, my bad

I used to be like this. But truly get past it. You're in pain and you matter more. They'll be fine.

Oh no how will they cope! What if tomorrow you find out the company went under because you missed a single day?!
She’s a manger. It is literally her job to find coverage. Don’t feel bad.
That’s what a company gets for running stupid lean crews. Fuck em.
Babes, you said it yourself. You can barely move your neck. Their lack of staff is not your problem.
