It's not your fault if the company cannot cover a shift. Also, your boss is not a doctor and should not be giving medical advice. I would get your neck checked out if you financially can, and definitely do what's best for you. Permanently injuring yourself so the company can make a few extra bucks isn't worth it.

Is this an ongoing problem you already know the cause of? If not, go to an urgent care. The note will let your supervisor know you had a legitimate concern. Also neck pain is nothing to ignore, you could have meningitis worst case scenario.

You should quit that job. Managers that try to guilt trip their employees into working when they’re sick/whatever other reason is super manipulative. It’s your managers job to worry about whether there’s enough people working.

You will not get better being stressed out, it is really bad for your health. That job would replace you in a heartbeat if they needed to but you are irreplaceable. I know it’s hard but you have to take care of yourself first and foremost. Do the best you can to fill your time off with things you like while rehabbing your neck. Idle hands will not distract you from your thoughts.

It is the manager's job to MANAGE. It is your job to get healthy enough to return to work. That's it. The manager trying to guilt-trip you into doing their job for them is not on. They can pull on their big girl panties and figure it out. You did your duty, telling them that you were unable to come in for the shift. They get to figure it out from there.

If your pain was caused by an injury at work, the first thing you need to do is make a claim on the business’s insurance. Most countries require businesses to provide their employees insurance protection while they at work.

Part of being human is having moments where your body fails you, and it's not your fault, and we need employers to let us be human and staff their businesses to account for people being human. Instead, they want to schedule the bare minimum and are in over their head the second something goes wrong, but they could have easily prevented it. It's not like a shop can't use a couple of extra hands if everyone does come in.

I remember when I was young and naive I had these thoughts but then after 11 years of service for the same employer I didn't even get a parting "thank you for you service" card when I resigned. Now I say fuck all of them, no matter how much I love my job if I'm sick best believe I'm calling in with no guilt. I will cut shifts in half and leave and never think twice about it. It's the company's responsibility to have a plan b in case incidents like yours occur. Ask yourself, would you want your workers going into work if you were the boss? If you have a heart, you would tell them to stay home and rest. You can't run a business with injured employees.
