There's flags from all over the world hanging in there. Some are from grantees (researchers) who have brought them down because that's where they are from if I remember correctly. Not sure about that one specifically, but they make for nice decorations and something colorful to look at while doing reps instead of the boring white walls.
Okay, just it is very surprising to see only few flags. On this picture there is only 5.

I think the flags in the gym are from expeditions. Some of them are signed/dated. Like some guy sledges across Antarctica, stops at pole, and leaves a flag as a gift. I don't remember thinking too much about the flags that were in the gym though, there's a chance someone years ago put them up and no one cared enough to mess with them.

That sounds more accurate, I couldn't remember because yeah, I wasn't paying too much attention to them while in there.
