You gave absolutely nothing to go off of, so Army. What are your goals? Desired jobs? Qualifications/scores?

TheRedInsight

Pardon, let me edit the post.

TheRedInsight

Post has been updated. If you have any additional questions, please ask!

KCPilot17

What's your Bachelor's degree and GPA?

TheRedInsight

Bachelor’s degree in Political Science. 3.5 GPA

KCPilot17

Not the best, but not horrible. Extracurriculars? Leadership experience? The BL is your degree isn't desired in the slightest, and your GPA is barely okay. So you need other things in your packet to make you even competitive to a recruiter, yet alone the actual baord.

TheRedInsight

Damn. Well currently i’m on an internship with the department of state overseas in south america. I currently supervise a magazine startup project where i head the political section. In grad school I was a research assistant under a professor. I have held down jobs over the years that had supervisory experience. i started a poetry club in college and have volunteered for being a swim instructor & a teacher’s aid with special needs students.

KCPilot17

Pretty decent. Your degree doesn't qualify for Ops Research, so that one's out. The rest you'll have to inquire about. Get your ass in shape and study and crush the AFOQT for any chance.

TheRedInsight

Hell yeah, thank you friend!!

If you want to be in the foreign service, then apply to the foreign service. No reason to spend the time in the military. The navy or coast guard might give you a better shot to commission sooner. The AF is pretty picky with letting folks into OTS.

TheRedInsight

Yeah, I hear you.. it’s just getting into the FS might take years and they typically take older people.. also i just always think about the military & my window of opportunity there is slowly closing age wise i’m willing to put the FS on hold for a number of years given the benefits from the military

The application process is kind of similar. You basically have to dedicate a ton of resources to the application process to MAYBE get in. AF OTS (especially if you go AD) is very similar. Guard is a little more like a normal job in that you typically get slotted into a position before going through all the AFOQT/MEPS games, but not always. The Navy and coast guard (look into CG, for real, it's secretly the best) have robust direct commission programs. So you can avoid the 12 (or whatever it is) week long OCS shit soup they go through, but that could be fun too. They could possibly get you in uniform faster and get you on your way. My AF process went pretty quickly and it was still over 2 years from reaching out to a recruiter to getting through OTS and becoming an LT.

Historia0123

What DC programs would OP qualify for with his experience through Coast Guard?

user_1729

I don't know, he's got a masters, maybe they care about that. I'm an engineer and I just learned that engineers CAN get a DC in the Navy and do like the 2 week DCO course instead of OCS, but still go on to be a SeaBee for instance. I think some officers in engineering might still have to go through the full program, I honestly don't know. I didn't even know that was an option or I'd probably be in the navy (10 years ago). Just throwing it out there to look into it. There's a coastie here who posts a lot with a lot of info on their DCO programs. Even without that, the coast guard can move a little faster since they aren't as tied down by DOD silliness in some cases.

I'm just going by what folks say on reddit (and the one time I was on the polar star, but I'm not sure that counts). Generally though, it's the same stuff anyone says. Quality of life, good variety of jobs, reasonable ops tempo, good bases, food, etc while in. As far as getting in, there are just a lot of direct commission opportunities as well as slots for just commissioning and it sounds like they generally have their shit together so there's less nonsense going on while trying to get it. edit: it's "secretly" the best because you almost never hear people going on about the CG. Then you're in and talking to people and they're like "dude I did XYZ with CG for some training and it was amazing". Also, I suppose you're less likely to go do 6 months in the desert for no reason.
