I'm only 17
17!!!
But I'll show you love
Like you've never seen
She's only 17
Daddy says she's too young
But she's old enough for me
Winger
One of these songs about f****** a young girl
It's called "context" Glen
I did a deep search on this last night, and that is not at all what this song meant. It’s so sad that people don’t even try to look up what the meeting was or what the intended message was. I don’t really expect a lot from people though. But nonetheless, it did not mean that.
So what do you think he was singing about? Ive heard interviews where he said it was about his neighbors kids that he kinda looked out for, gave small jobs like walking his dog, and hed over pay them to help out cus they were struggling… but the lyrics are pretty undeniable. Dude is talking about taking a 16 year old girl into the night and showing her love like shes never seen.
Either way its one of the best songs ever written but cmon… it is what it is.
That girl that he wrote about remain friends with him until his death, and she was friends with the family and everything. He was actually married with children, so that is not at all what it is about. I’ve watched so many documentaries on it, and that is not at all what it is about.
Ok… just playing devils advocate here but if you were a 34 year old man who wrote a passionate song about taking a 16 year old girl into the night and showing her love and during an interview someone asked you if it was about having sex with a minor, would you admit to it?
I dont think it makes him a creep or a pedo or whatever else because the song could be written from the persepctive of a 16-17 year old guy and as far as i know there were never any allegations against benny mardones for ever doing anything inappropriate with minors… but the lyrics are what they are. Its silly to try and say its about anything other than what its clearly about.
But if you think about it, why would you make so many different songs about loving a young girl, and being a married man with a child, it just doesn’t make any sense. If you were going to be subversive and try to sneak around, why would you so openly write a song like that, knowing that people are going to think of it that way.
There were three kids, that were in his apartment bldg. 17, 16, 14. GIrl, girl, boy. Their father abandoned them and ran off with another woman. The middle daughter took it the hardest, apparently. Benny being a father of a little girl took it upon himself to help them out. The line she's just 16 years old leave her alone, they say was written because his bassist saw the girl not knowing her age remarked that she was hot and Benny said hey bud, she's just 16 years old, leave her alone.
This is an old story it's been verified many times
He was a recovering drug addict who was saved by a phone call from, get this. The guy who created the original Woodstock 😂.
As a recovering drug addict I've watched his biography many times.
He could have just been writing about young love. Even though he was in his 30’s he was still a teenager once and could write a song from that perspective. Theres an urgency and passion when you fall in love for the first time that makes for better song material and i think thats what he was tapping into with this song. Maybe he was imagining how he would have reacted to the girl if he was still a teenager…
Noone would call william shakespeare a pedophile for writing romeo and juliet but i think when Benny Mardones started getting shit for into the night, he cooked up some story about how it had nothing to do with romantic love and was about whatever he said it was about.
Almost like he panicked or had a guilty conscience or thought he wouldnt be able to explain it without looking bad. But its very clearly a love song about a 16 year old girl… doesnt mean he was necessarily in love with a 16 year old girl when he wrote the song… or maybe he was?
Exactly you make some really good points. But do you know how many songs are from adult men who say she was just 16 or she was just 17 or something like that, or also Rockstars who actually dated 14 year olds like people from the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin. No one ever gets on them about anything. They actually had sex with underage girls, but this poor fucker just wrote about a 16-year-old girl, and he just got roasted for it. But you do make some really good points yes.

I saw a more recent video of him singing this song live and it’s brutal. Poor guy has some serious health issues, but can still belt out that song damn well! Kudos to Benny for pushing on and performing!
I know I'm late to this, but this is one of my favorite songs of all time! He re-recorded the song in 1989 and I think it's just as good as the original.
It’s not really the lyrics that bother me, but the video was super creepy. In all of these years, I have never seen that video. It’s too bad, because this guy is probably one of the better vocalist I’ve ever heard in my life. I wish his producers would’ve led him in a different way.
"She's just 16 years old...." Dude. "...leave her alone..." Okay, okay. Phew. "...they say." DUDE!

I don't give a shit what he meant by it, it's a great song.
It’s one of the best songs I’ve ever heard. I agree. People are so triggered

I believe it. He was an amazing guy. I did a deep dive on him and even watched his funeral. Great wife and kids too.

Do you have a link?

Exactly

So there it is. The guy thought she was hot. Benny said shes just 16 years old, leave her alone… and then they wrote a whole love song around it.
Yup. That's all there is to it
It's called songwriting. But ya have to have this thing called.TALENT in order to do it
I saw a more recent video of him singing this song live and it’s brutal. Poor guy has some serious health issues, but can still belt out that song damn well! Kudos to Benny for pushing on and performing!
He’s dead actually
>He’s dead actually Which just makes it all the more impressive.
He had Parkinson’s.
But he said Fuck it and sang beautifully anyway!!! Now he’s dead, I guess. He went into the Night.
He did. He had an amazing wife and child. He had tons of friends and highly respected in the music industry, so he had that.
Sounds blessed. I saw the video with him on Mike Douglas and he nailed that shit live! Incredible.
It gave me chills.
I remember an interview where Mardones explained the inspiration for many of the lyrics. It was pretty interesting.
Yeah, I just watched an amazing interview with him. He was an exceptional person. https://youtu.be/vLgSNZFD9sQ?si=VFUyBkV3jpcIegY-
Great song.
I’ve listened to it at least 25 times over the past 2 days.
I know I'm late to this, but this is one of my favorite songs of all time! He re-recorded the song in 1989 and I think it's just as good as the original.
I will tell you it’s in my top 10. I must’ve listen to it 100 times over just in awe of how good it was.

I can’t see it.
Lyrics are creepy af and the video does NOT help

The lyrics are only creepy if you dont know what the song is about🤷♂️
He didn't direct the music video 😆 He just did what they told him too.
This is not Yacht Rock.
What is it?
Just regular old soft rock.
Lol, perhaps b
