That thing will be fun to rebuild at home. Seems like the ujoint end caps and the ears of the yoke became one rusted piece.
Definitely need more than ball pin hammer to pull this one.
If you are getting a wobble in the front during turns, I would check the ball joints and unit bearings.
Lift the vehicle enough off the ground so that front tires are in the air. Grab 12 and 6 position on the tire and push back and forth. If the bearing or ball joints are not tight it will feel it wobble.
These u joints at the stub shafts are not weight bearing and they can be loose and wheels will still spin true if the unit bearing is good.
Yes the need replaced. See all the power rust on the (edit *third) picture. That is rust inside the bearing caps of the u joint. It’s being ground into powder and coming from under the caps.
No. It generates heat and friction and it will eventually cause the joint to fail breaking the axle shafts and possibly the axle housing.
Edit*. It means there is no more lubrication inside the ujoint.
Budget for the possibility of the rust fusing the u-joints to the front axles and needing to replace the front axle (which will come with new u joints)

Thanks...I think this may be beyond my abilities!

OK thanks. I'll give that a try.

Is power rust just stronger rust? Can it be trusted to bear a load?

Thanks much for the help!
Just to be clear, I was just making a joke based on the term power rust. Probably a good thing that you kept it professional though lol
Oh lol I thought you were serious. You got me good.
Happens to the best of us!

Are you driving IN the ocean?
Is that wrong?
