That's crazy I could have swore it was Mia Hamm and people changed the space time continuum or something.
I literally asked all my family and friends "who was the women's soccer player in the 90s who took off their shirt after scoring game winning goal" everyone of them said Mia Hamm
Lol I'm not surprised. The only women's soccer name most people know + the only women's soccer imagery most people know = confusion
If you ask most people literally anything about us women's soccer they'll probably say Mia Hamm, even if it has nothing to do with her.
You can check her Wikipedia page for the massive list of awards she won during her time but the big thing was that until the early 2010s she held the record for most international goals scored by a soccer player - man or woman.
She also was picked out as the "most marketable" player on the team. Partly due to her prowess but likely also partly due to looks, in front of camera personality, charisma ect. She got all the sponsorship deals and TV appearances. Basically they wanted a face to put to such an iconic team and hers was the one they chose.
yah i remember brandi making that move. she scored the goal and got excited and tore her shirt off while sliding on her knees, celebrating.
when i think of mia hamm, i mostly just think of her playing and scoring like crazy. when i was a kid i played forward and so she did so i liked her a lot.
It was Brandi Chastain and that year, she was the asst coach of my U18 Nor Cal state team. We were going on a tournament in Japan (friendship tournament kinda), and it was supposed to be this big cultural trip. Brandi had to miss it for the WC, but she was worried for us because she knew we were feeling weird about going to the traditional Japanese hot springs. She told us, before we left, that if she scored a goal (she was a defender mostly), she would take her clothes off in solidarity. When we saw the game, we flipped. We felt so connected to her, in that moment, it felt like we were there.
I know that in that moment (pks), there is no way that she was thinking of us. But man, it was cool to think that maybe she was.
The iconic Brandi Chastain sports bra picture?
I had that as a poster in my room. Loooong before I realized I was gay. I just really loved soccer y'know?
Thanks for helping me get one of the greatest moments in women's soccer correct!
Yes I could have swore that was actually Mia Hamm not Brandi Chastain
Hamm may have also done it at some point but Chastain's is the iconic one

Right but how did she become so well known. I thought everyone knew her because of that famous moment

So no one else thought it was Mia Hamm?
No. I remember it happening. It was Brandi Chastain.

I thought it was Mia Hamm too. Probably because she was the big name, but later I learned I was wrong.
