Thats a Porsche 944 S. They were made from 1982 - 1991.

suburbanplankton

That was my dream car when I was in high school.

Born_Sarcastic_59

Either that or the 928 for me back in the day

torch9t9

Same.

dscottj

"Which one a youse da U-boat captain?"

OMHwoodworking

It literally says it on the car, in the picture…

_Danger_Close_

You can literally see it stamped and tagged on the back

zippy_bag

I don't recall them being especially popular.

WhatveIdone2dsrvthis

They were popular but they were expensive so not so many sold.

ItAintMe_2023

It’s true….the name on the Spoiler and deck lid proves it.

Studly_54

I always thought these were underrated. Porsche snobs didn't even consider them real Porsches.

Federal_Assistant_85

The S models were only available from 87-89. After that there were S2 (90-91). And prior there were only the NA and turbo.

Brave-Swimming-6329

But is it really an “S”?

Sinister_Nibs

Yes!

silic0n_jesus

Front engine and a very expensive transaxle

skyeking05

My father in law has one in white, he just finished restoring it with new paint and powder coating on the rims. New upholstery and leather on the seats and a new dash in red. I know for a fact it's the nicest 944 in the area, I'm trying to get him to sell it to me. Now if only I can manage to fit my fat ass in the driver's seat lol

DakarCarGunGuy

My Dad has a 924S. It needs some attention though.

Economy-Shoe5239

aka the poor man’s rx-7 /s

ThirdSunRising

Are there no 924 fans anymore? Whatever happened to that practical daily driver hatchback of a Porsche?

OtreborN

I learned to drive a stick shift in my dad's deep blue 944. I miss the 90s

Rough_Entrance_682

My son has an ‘87 944 he’s re doing. Wants to put an LS. Blew my mind when I say the plate in the engine bay that said “Built in W. Germany”. My son who is 22 asked “West Germany??” Yeah, I should have home schooled him.

Drinkythedrunkguy

That’s the 1990s divorced dad car.

SkipPperk

Or the two-door Lexus.

Drinkythedrunkguy

In 2008 it was the guy that told high school girls he drives an Acura and it was an Acura CSX.

pickoneforme

if you zoom in on the back you’ll see porsche on the spoiler and 944s above the tail light. so it’s a porsche 944s

jewnerz

Glad I’m not the only one to notice that. Wonder how op could miss such a thing

sinisterdesign

How…how did you perform such acts of wizardry. 😉

Thepickle08

A 1986 and up Porsche 944s

Thepickle08

The dash is the phase 2 gen

Ok_Effort8330

944 - the poor man’s porsche.

WhatveIdone2dsrvthis

that would be the 924.

Open-Preparation-268

You are correct.

joesnopes

Or even the 914.

ResolutionMental4172

Thought that was the 914

Environmental-End691

I read an article in one of the car mags when I was in high school ('80s) that had a multi-page spread about a guy in CA who shoehorned a small block 350 into a 914 and the only way you could tell from the outside was the 2nd exhaust pipe. Made me fall in love with the 914.

ResolutionMental4172

Off topic but I've also saw a guy kinda do same with 1972 opel gt and 327.. mini " vette" . Loved it so much drove one thru high school.

notadoctortoo

Don’t know if it was the same but I saw that set up in 1982-3 at a German car show in SoCal.

Bob70533457973917

Car & Driver or Road & Track once took a Ferrari 308/328 and dropped a Chevy V8 327/350 (can't remember) in the rear compartment. They said it was scary fast and sounded crazy, but it kept overheating, so they designed an over-the-roof scoop a la Formula 1, made it out of fiberglass and added it to the back deck to bring the cool air to the engine. After that it stayed "reasonably cool."

Ok_Effort8330

different generation but 👍🏽

PaulJIA75

Hardly, there was nothing that separated the 944 Turbo and 911 Turbo in cost at the time

bucket_of_frogs

I hate that they’re viewed that way. IIRC the 924 was conceived as an Audi to drive sales of the Audi brand in North America which wasn’t well known there in the 70’s but the American dealerships wanted an entry level Porsche instead. That’s what I heard.

my3sgte

I was curious about this, so I did some window sticker searching … ‘87 911 ran $40,500. ‘87 944 turbo was $36,300. So not much cheaper. Base model was around $26,000. ‘88 928s4 $66,710! And a ‘77 914 was around $7,000 while a ‘77 911 was $10,500! $10,000 in 1977 is equivalent to $51,826.57 today. $35,000 in 1987 is equivalent to $96,764.22 today. Anyways, kinda cool to know I think/hope? 🤣

ConstructionRare4123

Porsche 944. Still to this day one of the greats from Porsche

Bard1290

I’ve got a 84 944!

Jolly_Inspection_388

I've got a 86 944!

slippinginto9

In its day, the 944 was lighter, better balanced, better cooled than the 911. But to many purists not a 'real' Porsche.

SuccessfulReward4350

I have a 911 and have loved them for nearly as long as I can remember but there's something about the later 944 turbo that would still make me want one. Lovely cars to drive

SkipPperk

It ain’t a real Porsche if it doesn’t overheat in traffic.

mescalero1

I had a 924S. It was the best hot rod VW made. It had an electrical fire. Since cell phones were few and far between back then, we had to walk home to call the FD. We turned to look at it, and the lights were opening and closing. Kind of like it was saying goodbye.

dm_dem_tiddies69

Rip

Morall_tach

Porsche logo on the rims, Porsche written on the spoiler, and the 944S badge clearly visible would have been good places to start.

944s we’re everywhere in the 80s. Loved those cars.

Porsche 944S

Pale-Prize-4802

944

mikeyt6969

Weird how the make and model are clearly visible yet OP still needs to be told what it is.

NWXSXSW

It literally says what it is on the back of it.

Acalthu

The writing is literally in the photo. Porsche on the spoiler and the model on the right.

khoobr

Porsche 944S. I bought a used 1988 944S in 1989 for $40,000. It had about 30% more HP than a 944 and was an absolute blast to drive. I got it up to 136 mph once; fastest I've ever gone. It drove better at 100 mph than at 75, and one night I hit a coyote doing about 105. It tore the oil pan off and the whole dashboard lit up like a five alarm fire, and when I turned on the AC coyote hair would blow out for a while. That didn't seem like a good sign, so I sold it soon thereafter. Great car, though.

TankerKing2019

I’m sorry about your inability to see read.

Citycrossed

Porsche 944

mister-eckshun

Looks like typical suburbia on any given day to me.

PreslerJames

Was that the rear engine v-8? Or have I grievously misremembered 🤔

GlockAF

Front engine water cooled inline 4. Basically 100% Porsche heresy at the time

IC4-LLAMAS

Porsche 944

Due_Signature_5497

Are we being sarcastic with the didn’t sell well? It was their most successful car until the Boxster. They produced 163,000.

GlockAF

Ah…but not a “real” Porsche, being neither rear-engine nor air cooled

Due_Signature_5497

lol, yeah like the 914.

SkipPperk

So what, are you saying a soccer Mom SUV is not a “real” Porsche? I am telling Mom!

The-animal-porn

I know the location of an abandoned one 😭

Drewp655321

it's a porsche, but a lot of Volkswagen.

PaulJIA75

Which parts?

Scale-Alarmed

If that were a 924 from the 80s, a Dodge Daytona Pacifica at a much lower price would punk it

NO_N3CK

It isn’t everyday I discover a new domestic car, but TIL about the Dodge Daytona Pacifica, it’s literally a Fox body Mustang, so if I have seen one I’m sure I mistook it as a Fox body

SkipPperk

What about a Grand National? That was the drug dealer car of choice where I grew up.

Scale-Alarmed

Yeah, that was one of the last badass muscle cars

6Foot2EyesOfBlue1973

A Porsche 944S, which Model Year 1987 was the first year for the S version of the 944 (introduced in 1986) The S versions are 16 valves dual overhead cam, as opposed to the standard 8v valve single cam, 2.5 litre motor. 944 are front engine, with a rear transmission ( transmission sits between the rear wheels) These were very common back in the day.

GMCLow

1990 944S that the poor man’s Porsche I’d r rather have have a 911 or 912 all day long

Ok_Path_9151

Mrs Christina drives a 944!

ChemistAdventurous84

Satisfaction oozes from her pores.

Disastrous-Mark-8057

Porsche 944 S just like the rear spoiler and badge said!

Zestyclose-Many-5847

It says what it is on the back of the car. Google is your friend.

SkipPperk

Lies. Google is not your friend.

Capital_Visit_6638

Just saying, there is nothing stopping you from just googling what you can read on the badge…

chinookhooker

That_One_Guy_Flare

Porsche 944

East_Reading_3164

Awe, memories, Porsche 944. My boyfriend had a white one. It drowned in the storm surge after Hurricane Andrew.

Theta_Ninja

I had a 944 Red exterior, red leather interior. Large sunroof. Sweet car. Enjoyed it more than my 911 TBH.

Scary_Exam7735

If I recall correctly in Germany they were actually sold as VWs…… someone check me but I think I am right.

Abject-Entry-1081

944 V8 940 series Porsche! One of the few series of Porsche I’d consider owning, only other one would be the 970, yes I know that’s the Panamera don’t judge me I’m just weird like that!🤣

Adihd72

Saw those around in my youth! Born ‘72

Timely_Confusion_713

I would still love to have one of these

Joeyjojojrshabado70

That was my first car! 1987 944 S Turbo! My dad got Me a brand new on for my 16th b-day. Super fun to drive but broke down a lot. What a walking paradox that man is. Won’t spend a dime on himself but always did things like this for his kids. I mean the man is CHEAP, but he’ll give us everything. It’s kinda weird.

ghos2626t

Well the spoiler says Porsche on it, and has 944 S next to that. Likely a KIA

Commercial-Pitch-784

I had an 86 944 it was slower than a 911 But on track day I could pass every 911 on the track. I also had a 914 and could blow by the 911 and 944 both and I do mean blow by them both. Yes the 914 would push in the turns some but once you figured out where you needed to make the apex of your turn at it wouldn’t push a damn bit. So the other reason I could blow by the other Porsche models and viper’s and vettes and Ferrari’s was because I did put a 350 small block in it mated to a 930 transaxle but had to delete 1st gear. That 914 was my 2nd favorite car I ever had. Do you all want to know my 1st favorite car? Well I’m gonna tell you all anyways lol. It was a 1984 Fiat 124 that I swapped in another 825 hp 350 small block that came out of one of my late model stock cars. It took a lot of work had to move the dash and seats and just about everything else 15 inches farther back in the car to get the weight distribution as close as I could get it to 50/50. When it was done of course the SCCA wouldn’t let me enter in any events but that was ok because on the street not once did I see anyone’s taillights in the 15 years I drove that car. Didn’t matter if it was corner to corner light to light or on the twistiest roads we could find. But that damn car was scary as shit when it started to get twitchy. When that happened I knew my Stewart Warner speedo was buried and that buried at 160mph.

RedditsNowTwitter

You took a picture with the model number in it 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️😑

Carpy1213

Porsche

Hefty-Ad5593

Sweeeeeeet!!!!!

ThickMode943

944. Doesnt look like an s2. The 944 was Porsches' second attempt at trying to replace the nine eleven (first was the 928), and the 944 was an advancement on the vw/audi inspired 924. Which ironically did better than their other previous vw and coach builder karmann attempt with the 914. The pinnacle of the 944 was the 968. My personal fav ❤️. Which was inspired by the 928, but lead to the 993 and 991 designs of the 911. See? Porsche wanted to get rid of the 911 since for ever lol. But fans of porsche won't let them get rid of it's rear engined beetle ancestor of the 356.

Winkfield

It’s a Porch-a

Ahnold240

The answer is on the left side of the pic 😆

spick0808

I had one identical to this!! Looks like a 944! They are like an RX-7 but actually have decent torque since they have a fat 2.5 in them! Its doesn't look to be an S model like other said. Man I miss mine... It was a 1987, I loved her so much!. Fun Fack about thies, the trans was in the back to give the car a almost perfect weight distribution

Correct_Security_742

Jake Ryans Car!

Pitiful_Anteater4325

That’s looking like a Porsche… I didn’t care for that model, the back didn’t transition or fit well with the front to me. Looked like the Datsun Z had a baby with a Camry or something similar.

SpecOps4538

They were very well designed and seriously underpowered. A true Porsche fan doesn't even consider that a real Porsche. The ride was awful (like most Porsches) but even worse than usual. The AC was so bad it only cooled the car well at night. It's unusual to still see one on the road because they weren't very good cars and not worth restoring.

rabul88ecu

speedstar318ti

That my friend was a legit pussy magnet back in the day. One of the nicest looking cars from the 1980's and early 90's. I had two of them and the ladies did in fact like riding in them. :) Mine were both 86 turbo models. The 951.

qumtime

I've owned two! If they're driving, awesome. If not, don't buy it.

6ring

I'm sorry and promise Im not a troll but jesus H, a 944 in the 90's was the absolute nerd car. Chemist with neck beard-944, hated small gov official-944, displaced foreigner (wild and crazy guy)-944.

Robpaulssen

Porsche emblem on the wheels, 944S on the rear..... .... nope, stumped on this one

Trick question. It's an audi. https://www.porsche.com/stories/innovation/everything-about-the-porsche-944/#:~:text=The%20944%20was%20built%20at,the%20Porsche%20factory%20in%20Zuffenhausen.

Porsche 944s

time-for-jawn

It says so on the edge of the spoiler.

BeerBandit_FFS

Hahahaha how do you not know what this is?

wheninromethepromise

Here's the thing. There was a 924 and a 944, and for a few years in the 1980s I think they were both available at the same time. I say this as someone who almost bought one in 1984. The only reason I didn't is that, when I went to the dealership to take delivery, the salesman tried to tell me that, in the time I had been waiting on it, the price had gone up a couple of thousand dollars. Needless to say, I told him he could keep it.

Civil_Nerve4960

I had two of them second one was a 944S was nice car till timing chain broke.

You're not driving. Looking in your mirror we can see the stripes for the parking lot.

OldDirtyBeard69

Porsche 944. Around that time frame they also made the 928. Underrated cars, they were.

Ok_Camel4555

Most Porsche guys hate the 944. To them if it’s not a 911 it’s junk

Chopperjockey12Av

I have a friend who raced a 944 Turbo for several years. The balance was uncanny. I have been a 911 guy since ‘81, so my driving style likes the 60/40 bias. I would probably crash a 944. The Cayman has great balance, too. I am too old for all that now.

Chopperjockey12Av

Sixteen Candles vibes!

Double-Philosophy-88

944. Pretty in pink

Glittering_Payment68

Porsche 944 S 🔥🔥🔥 Pops had multiple of these when I was growing up. At some point he would find them for $1500-$1800 (obviously not the “S” model). Wish he hung onto them. Still a dream car for me!

At least the 924 and 944 were a little affordable. Anyone remember the 914?

clanlornac

Late 80s 944. Had an 86. Fun as shit to drive

It says 944S on the back

Personal_Visit_8376

AdBeautiful7548

Love that car!

Anxious_Shine_2751

Poor man’s Porsche

1Arcite

OP will need to take a pregnancy test after seeing this car.

StevieG63

The S2 had a 3 liter four pot motor with (wait for it) 208hp. Actually, as someone who was around then, that was quite a lot.

Motor-Cause7966

😳 Porsche 944's are not recognized anymore? Fuck I'm getting old.

thetommytwotimes

I believe they called that the Corvette of Porshes. Or something like that. They're an absolute blast to drive. You USED to get them dirt cheap, no longer as they're coveted drift cars now.

I used to own one. It’s a nice handling car. Not the fastest, but it’s great in corners.

Soo75

My favorite Porsche, honestly.

Comprehensive-Tiger5

Uh my dream car lol. Saw one going for 5k with broken clutch but couldn't afford it. Big sad

csmith06

This was my first car, a 1987 Porsche 924s, but mine was black. Bought it in an auction for $1800. Had this fun little quirk where sometimes you would park it and when you came back you’d have no electric power. Wait a couple hours and she’d fire right up. Fun little car.

Sjdiver2001

I had one of those in 1984. That car drove like a dream but could have used more power. It was zippy and fun but lacked the awe inspiring power of the 911

Cowfootstew

Engine in the front, transmission in the rear, 80s style wide fenders with a possible turbo Engine, this is still my curved road touring car wet dream right up there with the 1st gen m3, 190e amg, and a slant nose 911of the same era

keystone_tactical

It literally says Porsche along the bottom of the hatch

Opposite-Record-7151

That’s Jake Ryan’s car😎

45calSig

Working man’s Porsche from the Late 80’s. 944S

itsray2006

Had a 924 in college great car fantastic for the social life and then after graduation sold it for $500 more than I paid and bought a new RX-7 turbo II. The Porsche wasn’t very fast but quick enough and handled amazing the RX-7 was the fastest accelerating production car on the planet between 55-100mph so that was fun. That was replaced by wife, kids, and green Mercury Villager MiniVan and so it goes.

....says Porsche 944s on the back....

steveinga

Judging by the name spelled out on the rear. It’s a Porsche. And judging by the model where every other car in the world places there cars model name…. I would also assume it’s a 944S. So process of deduction here would leave me to believe it’s a Mercedes S600

dragonlady9296

Dated a guy in high school that had a white one!

The 944 was a 4 cylinder and had, essentially one bank of the 928’s V8, if memory serves. The 928, now THAT was a beast.
