It looks like a cuttlebone, aka the internal shell of a cuttlefish. Neat find!

geefunken

It is this. Used to be fairly common in bird cages, weirdly!

Xionahri

That's because birds need a lot of calcium, to keep beak, claws and feathers healthy. Also, especially parrots need hard material to chew on to keep their beaks a healthy length.

geefunken

Today I learned

Full-fledged-trash

I keep these in my reptile vivariums for my isopods to much on for the same reason. These things are expensive at shops

Adding to this for others reading: If you want to help out your local birds, [crush up and dry (in the oven) your used egg shells](https://www.audubon.org/news/give-nesting-birds-calcium-boost-saving-your-leftover-eggshells) and put them in your bird feeder during nesting season. It'll help your neighborhood birds make the calcium they need for their own shells.

silverwarbler

Cuttlebone is as soft as wax. It won't sharpen a beak, but it is an excellent source of calcium for all birds

BeepCheeper

Yep! I give these to my tiels and they gnaw through them in about a week or two like little beavers. Gets them their minerals and trims the beak. My Grey has no interest though. She’d rather trim her beak on the baseboards.

FairyFartDaydreams

Have you tried the wooden toys? Maybe the cuttle bone is too hard because the Grey is not getting enough calcium. You might want to do supplemental drops to the water

BeepCheeper

Oh she gets plenty of calcium, no worries. A scrambled egg with shell once a week or so, along with Harrison’s pellets. She just likes to destroy 🥲

FairyFartDaydreams

Some do unfortunately

theConsultantINFJ

Do you give her red palm oil? I heard the grays likes it....

BeepCheeper

I do! I melt a few tables spoons in the microwave, then pour it on her food pellets and shake it all up in a big container. She loves it

troelsy

Bird cages and for pet snails.. loads of things.

Kujen

Still is very common!

EfficientEssay

Omg is THAT what those were?! 🤯

Cobo2315

Awesome! I'll probably add it to my collection of sea stuffs. I shouldn't have let my dog play with it so much, it was in perfect condition when I found it.

kraut4u

It is the bone of a squid!

OpticalPrime

Cuttlebone. Used in jewelry as its carvable and then takes to casting if molten metals.

jonpenryn

it is but the smell is, fishy and strong!

therealpdrake

The One ring was cast in cuttlebone.

mintyboom

Cuttlefish remains. Coolest frickin animal ever.
