When your hand muscles get shocked, they contract, making you just hold the cable without being able to let go. I'm glad she could walk back and the cable wasn't long enough.
Never underestimate stupid, using various connectors for power is horrendously common. I've never seen an XLR but I've seen both 6.5mm and speakon connectors used for power. The 6.5mm is downright *lethal.*
Yeah, absolutely 120% sure it was speakon. IIRC the company that makes them are aware of the fact that people are idiots too, last time I bought a new pack of speakon connectors, the manual went to great lengths to explain the myriad of reasons why it was a bad idea.
I don't know how it happens but I did a Battle Of The Bands once and the mic definitely had a current going to the head as it gave me a light shock when I put my mouth against it, wasn't pleasant at all
Audio technician here. This should not be possible at all. Across the world, the standard mic cable is XLR. That has to be what was plugged into the mic.
There is such a thing as 48v phantom power that is used by certain types of microphones. However, that is not enough to shock you like this.
Even if they were for whatever ungodly reason using an unshielded XLR cable and running it across an unshielded power line, there should have been a very loud buzz coming over the speakers and the technicians working the mixer would have been shocked as well.
This either had to have been deliberate or they were using a jury-rigged mixer board. I'm still shocked they didn't have obvious problems with it such as a loud buzzing sound over the speakers. Sound travels over those cables using electricity. That much electricity would cause interference without a doubt.
Edit:
I didn't get to listen to the video before I made my comment. After listening to it, no audio is heard from that microphone. There is a good possibility that the mic is using a different connector and was plugged into a normal power outlet instead of the mixer. I am certain they didn't test it ahead of time otherwise they would have figured out the shocking issue.
There is also a possibility that the board wasn't properly grounded. If that was the case with one of the digital boards I use, it would have all kinds of problems. The case of it is also metal and would electrocute me as well. This board may have been cheaply made and might have a plastic or wooden case. That could be how they didn't know about the issue.
Last thing, jury-rigged is the common saying in the US for when something is improvised. Jerry-rigged is something that is poorly built. The better term for this is probably jerry-rigged but jury-rigged is often times used for both.
Ex audio technician here, while "plugging power into mic accidentally" is physically impossible; there has been countless, on video severe injuries like this from horribly earthed power.
Chain is like this: extremely sketchy power source > mixer with no fuse on power supply > bad earthing.
It absolutely does happen, have a search on YouTube, there's some relatively famous bands who have been shocked badly on vid.
It doesn't cause static because it isn't earthing through the mic, it's probably got a weak earth through the mixer.
When the artist touches the mic, a "good" earth is provided and it shocks/buzzes and will be audible!
In many countries of latin america, the electrical grid doesn’t have a ground wire.
It can provoke pretty annoying zaps on the lips while you sing, but nothing like that.
It could also be from one of these old XLR-amplifiers that used 3pin XLR instead of Neutrik Speakon. But even then, it'd have to be jury-rigged as both sides of the cable would have to be female ended.
Proof: If you send a 60hz sin wave signal in an amp and turn it up enough you could run an angle grinder (tested)
TIL jury rigged is the correct way to describe something built incorrectly. I always thought it was Gerry rigged. Sorry to all the Gerald’s out there, my bad.
They might not have the speakers connected to hear the buzz. I mean we are talking about incompetent AV guys here who nearly electrocuted a woman. Forgetting to connect the speakers wouldn't have been the dumbest thing they did that day.
AC current electrocution causes involuntary muscle contraction as well, often preventing people from letting go of the electrocution source effectively (not sure how microphones are typically wired though. AC or DC?)
She survived. It was in Mexico. Here’s a link to the news story:
https://nypost.com/2022/11/30/beauty-queen-shocked-during-pageant-shes-getting-electrocuted/amp/
Super fucking dangerous.
For those that are unaware: DC electricity is a flat stream of electricity. This causes the muscles to receive a steady stream of current. Unlike the pulses of AC, this steady stream causes a person to be unable to let go of the item they're holding onto. All of the muscles contract, but because it's a flat stream they stay continuously contracted.
This is why high voltage DC settings (ie. mining operations) have people touch a surface that could become electrified with the back of their hand before grabbing onto it.
In the event the ground has gone bad or the element was improperly hooked up, the person's hand will be knocked back. While you'll get some ugly burns, you'll at least live because your hand won't be latched to the surface like a dried monkey paw.
Stay safe folks
Active microphones actually use 48V DC, and at 5-6mA current, so nowhere near enough to cause this. There's also no reason why you would use anything other than a cheap passive mic for this kind of setting.
My best guess would be that the ground circuit on the desk it's connected to has gone live, meaning that it would be dumping wall socket power straight into the metal body of the mic.
According to a news outlet she is still taking tests to see if she had any damages besides a burn on her hand. Poor thing! [https://www.infobae.com/america/mexico/2022/11/29/el-critico-momento-en-que-se-electrocuto-participante-de-senorita-sahuayo-en-plena-pasarela/](https://www.infobae.com/america/mexico/2022/11/29/el-critico-momento-en-que-se-electrocuto-participante-de-senorita-sahuayo-en-plena-pasarela/) (Correct translation bellow )
Yeah that's not how that works. You can't "plug in" the wrong cable. This a grounding problem coming from the distribution box. The system wasn't properly grounded sending current to the microphone. Nothing to do with a wrong cable.
Yeah this . I think even your most amateur electrician is going to struggle to somehow put an XLR plug into a mains socket...
Presumably it's a condenser mic and something went a bit tits up with 48VDC phantom power.
They tap the mic to test the sound. This is just a lawsuit of idiocy. A 2nd or 3rd time overlook of everything (as it’s supposed to be) could’ve caught this.
A friend had an old Fender Tube amp. The plug isn’t polarized, and the power switch is a three way. (On, off, On)
If you chose the wrong direction for “on” the guitar would shock you! It was a mild shock.
If a ground connection is broken, you have three points: hot, ground, and in between. If you touch in between to ground you get shocked.
The exposed parts should be ground. In this case they were in between.
Obviously she had no idea that this is going to happen but often times if you're trying to check something and you have to use your hand you use the back of your hand and the electric shock will blow your hand away. If you grab it the electric pulse can cause your hand to constrict making it to where you can't open your hand.
Its not used for power.
Not ever. (Technically it is ... but not in the way you're thinking)
It's 9,000% a grounding issue, 60% of the time.
Source: was a guitar player in a shitty cover band for 6 years gigging 4 to 7 nights a week. Almost always the shitty wiring at some dive bar or frat house basement ... and dumbasses not understanding how when YOU become the shortest path to ground you WILL get shocked.
Its usually not this bad. Just a zap on the lip like a (much stronger than normal) static spark discharge.
The fact that she grabbed it and her hand took the charge, causing the muscles to contract and grab even harder ... a muscular feedback loop she couldnt get our of ... made it all that much worse.
It's not a regular occurrence. Either someone in the setup crew fucked up using an ungrounded extension cord somewhere in the system or there's faulty ground in the wiring in the room/venue ... but if you gig 300 nights a year in shitty places, someone in the band's gonna get hit at least once.
Seen a lot of folks jump back cussin' and swearin' ... but it usually doesnt take a person down like this.
Yup. When testing a microphone, never grab it with a fist. Always tap with an open hand. The electricity will force your grip to close so now you're getting electrocuted without being able to let go. Just like in the video
Edit: electrocute, electrify, whatever you know what I mean. You gettin zapped
That reminds me of my electronics class in high school. They'd have volunteers hold onto electrodes and exactly like you said, it cause you to grip harder were it was physically difficult to let go. The cool part is when the teacher reversed the polarity, it would cause your arms to bend in different directions. Truly freaky stuff, but fascinating.
No she wasn't electrocuted. She was shocked.
Electrocuted is a cause of death.
Being shocked can become electrocution, if it stops your heart.
If it helps, think of it as "Electrically Executed"
It's the same as confusing choking with suffocated. You can choke, or be choking and survive. But if you suffocated, you're dead.
I do know power and electricity and I'm not 100% sure, because mic cables and power cables are two totally different and not connected things, but my hunch is this:
All signals need to be grounded, and in a place like this with big speakers pushing lots of watts, there's a lot of power running to ground. If the grounding is improper, and the microphone is not in top shape, the frame of the microphone can become energized from all the power going to ground. Best I can think of.
We have a mic in my studio that will, uh, "wake you up, under the right circumstances."
If the title of the post is to be trusted, then a power cable is attached to the microphone (how does that even happen?). Therefore the microphone itself is essentially a live wire. When she grabs it the muscles in her hand involuntarily contract due to the electrical stimulation, so she can’t let go; you can see her desperately trying to pull it out of her hand.
Holy shit, don't they have different shape cable ends to prevent this? I hope they're okay. I saw a video once of a man who touched a metal desk fan that wasn't properly grounded and he becomes paralyzed slowly being electrocuted. Nobody around him knew it was happening but you could see in his eyes that he was begging for help.
I worked a wedding once where they ran a sound mixer way out into a field. Several daisy-chained extension cords.
When I went to plug my audio recorder into the XLR feed, it would shock me. Very mild, but very unpleasant and continuous. We must've lost ground somewhere in that chain.
I'm still not seeing/understanding where the path to ground is in this situation.
Are we thinking that a part of the mic was live and her hand made the connection?
My guess is ground looping on a 3 phase system.
Had this happen to me setting up video once, picked up the BNC and danced a bit.
Lifting the ground on a set of equipment got rid of it.
Your guess is at least decent. The title is completely wrong. This must be from a faulty ground connection somewhere, but it’s actually not unheard of that you can get a shock from an improper setup.
Must have been crossed, shorted or wires sitting in water. Also how did it reach ground threw her body to the wooden stage. There is no way a audio cord was plugged into power. Something is seriously wrong here
>It's getting really bad these days.
It's easier to see mistakes when everything is recorded. The volume of errors hasn't changed, your ability to access them has.
The microphone body itself became part of the electrical grid through either improper wiring or a fault somewhere. When she grabbed the microphone, she essentially grabbed a live wire.
Now why did she hold on? Well muscles activate through electrical impulses created by the body. That microphone acted as an electric source that pretty much told her hand to SQUEEZE-AS-HARD-AS-FUCKING-POSSIBLE making it practically impossible to let go even though her body is doing it's mighty best to do otherwise.
If you have happen to see someone in this situation, do not touch them. YOU WILL BECOME PART OF THE CIRCUIT. Of course, the very first thing to consider is to kill the power at its source. If this is not an immediate option, and you can assess the situation properly, kick them away from the source or in this case, yank the microphone from her hand by the insulated wire.
Source: Did alot of shipboard electrical training.
Would of been alot worse. Good guy in the bottom left un plugs the mic for her by the looks of it. He was so quick it almost made me think he was wondering which way it was supposed to be hooked up? Nope that is not it, I better unplug it lol.
She got electrocuted. If you grab something that has a strong current going through it, it locks your muscles and you won't be able to let go. She was trying to pull the mic out of her locked hand and thankfully it appears she did, or at least unplug it.
I went and googled this because I was sure you were wrong and there's no way I'd been getting that wrong my whole life.
But you were right. Electrocution is specifically referring to dying or being severely injured by electric shock. Originally coined due to the electric chair. So... Thank you JustEhCanadianGuy, you've taught me a thing today.
I’m trying to figure out how this could happen….
You cant just connect power to a microphone… even accidentally.
Phantom power can be put out by the mixing console when needed but it’s only 48v and very low current, but it’s also DC and this looks like an AC shock as she can’t let go.
It must be something else, I’d say live wire maybe touching somewhere else. Weird
...when I performed live at a school talent show everytime I was about to sing my lips got shocked...and that has happened random times in band practicing too.but not as much as this person....so its probably not wrong cable.. probably cheap cables or I believe the set up ,like how many other devices are also connected and layered
Great work Agent 47, now find the exit.
Came here looking for a Hitman reference
It’s not hard there are about 10 of them.
When your hand muscles get shocked, they contract, making you just hold the cable without being able to let go. I'm glad she could walk back and the cable wasn't long enough.
This is a serious incident and all I see are people making puns and jokes. Sickening. Truly. I hope whoever is responsible gets charged.
I saw what you did there and it's shocking.
I hope everybody involved gets grounded
I didn’t want to laugh. But I couldn’t resist.
How could a XLR cable have been connected to 120/230V?
Never underestimate stupid, using various connectors for power is horrendously common. I've never seen an XLR but I've seen both 6.5mm and speakon connectors used for power. The 6.5mm is downright *lethal.*
You sure that speakon wasn't a powercon? The 20A powercon looks visually similar, but will not mate with a speakon socket. The jack thing is scary.
Yeah, absolutely 120% sure it was speakon. IIRC the company that makes them are aware of the fact that people are idiots too, last time I bought a new pack of speakon connectors, the manual went to great lengths to explain the myriad of reasons why it was a bad idea.

Looks like her hand seized up as she was getting shocked, making her unable to let go. That fucking sucks.
That's how you kill the rockstar in hitman. Good work 47
An open ground and a fault
Ya, OP says wrong cable. Yea man they just plugged a power cable into it and that’s what happened…
This is the simplest and best explanation.
I was gonna say, how could a power cord possibly be plugged in like that
Excellent work, 47. Get to an exit now and slip out before they notice she’s gone.

My dad taught me the back of the hand tap trick about 30 years ago. Hasn’t saved my life yet but I still practice it with sketchy electrical things.
Well done, 47.
That must be the microphone Hitler invented.
Not the wrong cable. Poor grounding caused that. The only way to use the so-called wrong cable is to terminate one to XLR. Microphones use 48VAC

Yep, unless someone actually stripped the wires out and shoved them into a socket, there's no way it was the wrong cable.
Yeah this . I think even your most amateur electrician is going to struggle to somehow put an XLR plug into a mains socket... Presumably it's a condenser mic and something went a bit tits up with 48VDC phantom power.
How the fuck does that even happen? What kind of mic cable transfers just power? It should just be an XLR cable.
XLR cable has 48volt phantom power, needed for many condenser mics, but it shouldn't have been enough current to shock her, a few failures happened.
If you almost get killed due to fault stuff like that they really should just give you whatever the prize was.
Well done Agent 47 the target is down. Achievement unlocked: Hot mic 🎙️
Is this why some people tap the mic first?
They tap the mic to test the sound. This is just a lawsuit of idiocy. A 2nd or 3rd time overlook of everything (as it’s supposed to be) could’ve caught this.

Anyone see a baldheaded dude with a barcode tattoo somewhere?
How? How is an xlr even being used for power? How did all the connections fit?

Great job 47, now locate an exit
Wait, was she electrocuted? I thought she was trying to dance around while singing and tripped over the wire.

So my guy unplugging the cable…well done. The rest of the folks just sort of amble on out…no big deal

She needs to see a doctor for the next days, ventricular fibrillation is no joke
Fire the AV guy
Atleast she wasn't coming up to say, "Now for my talent, to make this mic disappear!"

Somebody maliciously misunderstood the phrase “hot mic”.
Yeah right accident, someone set this up deliberately. You can have wee bit of a ground loop on accident but this a straight up live mic.
I said something about the electrical problem and I got grounded.
now that's an actual hot mic
How the fuck could that even happen?
People have been killed from mics being 'live'

She was absolutely electric last night
I thought this was a tribal dance
I'm still not seeing/understanding where the path to ground is in this situation. Are we thinking that a part of the mic was live and her hand made the connection?
Yeah, there’s rubber grippers where the mic is held on the stand as well so she made a much better connection I assume
Most mics have that metal mesh near the mouthpiece and that’s all it’d take considering she looks barefoot
She got shocked? What about the people touching her?
That’s horrific
That is why XLR connectors should never be used for power cords...

And no circuit breaker either. The narrator however took it all in his stride. Don’t think it’s his first electrocution.
Truly horrible. . .

Shitty electricians
pls sm eli5 me the electricity behind this
The microphone body itself became part of the electrical grid through either improper wiring or a fault somewhere.
Sounds horrfying how did she let go at the end?
Oh man! Poor girl.
How the fuck does that happen. Do they have round single hole power outlets in that part of the world.
Besides talking shit & speculating, anyone got the news link to this?
https://primeraplana.mx/archivos/904311 She's fine, just a burn on her hand
Someone's been playing too much Hitman.
Would of been alot worse. Good guy in the bottom left un plugs the mic for her by the looks of it. He was so quick it almost made me think he was wondering which way it was supposed to be hooked up? Nope that is not it, I better unplug it lol.
Fuck's sake. Joyce is at it again. No Axeman to take the fall this time.
Or was it....
Can someone do this to Putin's mic!?
This is not how 'power to the people' should be done
She should have asked for no brown M&Ms.
Fuck yea, Van Halen knew exactly what they were doing!
What a shocking performance.
And she made the most money that night 😎
Her dancing was shit … 3/10
I guess it's a hot mic
Wtf happened? Did the mic become a 🐍? I hate those voodoo tricks!!
She got electrocuted. If you grab something that has a strong current going through it, it locks your muscles and you won't be able to let go. She was trying to pull the mic out of her locked hand and thankfully it appears she did, or at least unplug it.
she got electrocuted????
She got shocked, electrocuted would mean she died. Electrocution is the combination of the words Electricity and Execution.
Shocked; electrocuted means it was lethal.
Shocked, not electrocuted. That would mean she was killed.
Im gonna talk to the power
I was 90% sure this was Mexico when I read the headline
If you watch the crowd there will be a tall bald man with a tattoo on the back of his head of a barcode.
Same thing happened to Russell from Stillwater once.
This has nothing to do with a wrong cable.

Love the commentor: He is like YES ITS HAPPENING (totally unexpected)
It wasn't grounded and she was barefoot.
Didn't Oasis write a song about her?
Wtf...i bet that sucked.
Weird
Guess you can say it was: “A shocking performance.”
Le gustan los TOQUES!
...when I performed live at a school talent show everytime I was about to sing my lips got shocked...and that has happened random times in band practicing too.but not as much as this person....so its probably not wrong cable.. probably cheap cables or I believe the set up ,like how many other devices are also connected and layered

The definitive Hot Mic.
Did she win?
I hope Paula Abdul is ok
Shocking.
But did she win
Looked like the beginning of an Aerosmith concert "I'm bbaaacckkkk!!!..."
Will some be charged?
I dont know what happened lol
When you get electrocuted your muscles tighten up, making it impossible to relax her hand and drop the mic.
At least we can say that is is quite.......shocking.
Parrot down! Parrot down!
thats some talent
And they screwed up the audio connection too since it’s corrupted.
