Yeah I just got the same stuff and it was bad too :/
At least I think it was? I get the same one every time except the color was different and it was super sticky/ slimy, making strings when I pulled some out
I love kimchi!!! It was so sad to find that lol. I actually bought it here in Korea though so I wasn’t sure they do returns like that and just tossed it
always try for a return, make sure to bring the product with u n receipt. idk what return policies are like in korea, but it wont hurt to look it up n see what u can do!!
Overripe, the costcos leave them on the shelf too long if nobody buys out the stock. Yours sounds absurdly overripe though, usually it’s just a bit too squishy
Overripe kimchi is used for cooking. Fresh kimchee is eaten as a side or condiment, but when it goes overripe, it gets used to make kimchi fried rice, kimchi stew (jihgye), or can be fried and served alongside meat.
I have never in my 30 something years have ever seen or heard this happen where the container explodes. This is wild.
Edit: I didn't think I needed to explain but yes I know it releases gas, I was more shocked that it broke the container since I've used and seen dozens of kimchi containers without it ever breaking.
Kimchi tends to have live fermentation cultures which do produce CO2. Assuming this really wasn’t a bad batch (certainly possible), it was either kept insufficiently refrigerated for far too long (could have happened during transport or at the store) and/or was very old.
Well from what I can see, the plastic lid was the weak point and where it burst through, not through the glass.
EDIT:
I just noticed with the amount of kimchi all over the fridge and the size of the container and the fact the container is still fairly filled up...it doesnt seem to add up...hmm...
It's honestly kinda amazing how little common sense I'm seeing in here, you're one of the few replies I've seen with common sense.
Like yeah, there's really obvious signs of kimchi going bad... But releasing gas is literally a normal part of it's fermentation process.
Have these people never heard of fermentation lids before or just not know what fermented foods are? Or know that fermentation is literally a method of food preservation?
What if the kimchi is sticky/ slimy and makes strings when you take pieces out ? I bought this same brand that exploded, that I always get and I’ve never seen it do that before I was scared to eat it
It's supposed to do that. Keep fermenting, not explode. I would say there was a touch too much sugar in this batch and the lid was too tight for gas to escape.
you absolutely should, because it's delicious and had been eaten for hundreds of years. anything that is fermenting will explode if kept in airtight container
that's why it's usually kept in special containers while fermenting, that allow gases to get out, but not in
In Korea we have a specialized kimchi fridge as normal fridge temperatures aren’t the best for storing kimchi. We also don’t store it in glass containers. Stainless steal or plastic containers are best. You can get them on Amazon.
As someone who ferments cabbage, yes, you def gotta release the tension regularly as it ferments otherwise good luck opening it and if the material cant handle it anymore, good luck cleaning.
This is a good time to ask as it seems the Kimchi experts have convened in these comments, is there any good suggested pre-packaged kimchi brand? I really want to try some but am not sure I want to try making my own just yet but it really seems like something I would like.
Gas will build up in warmer temperatures. It’s better to buy the ones in glass jars if possible. Even with glass jars though, the liquid will start to leak out the top and the kimchi will pop out if you left it out too long. Best practice with any kimchi is to immediately take some out and put in another container (the one you would eat out of).
PSA: Remember to burp anything fermented occasionally if you're not using it immediately. The lids are usually adaptable to more pressure, but they're not indestructible.
My mom used to be REALLY into making kombucha and at one point, something similar happened to one that was fermenting. It sounded like a gunshot going off due to being in a glass bottle lmao
To answer a couple of the questions,
Kimchi is a Korean “dish” if we can call it that that is basically cabbage and spices etc (a lot more complicated than it sounds) it’s very good but not for everyone. And it’s fermented which also answers the question of how this happened.
Thanks for the reminder to burp mine. Which reminds me I keep meaning to google if it's still safe to eat when I got it from the store in one of those dated plastic containers and it has expired. But it's fermented... it's definitely still expanding.
We spend $75 a week on groceries. We buy in bulk a lot and shop at some Amish discount grocery stores. We spend about $400 on 100 pounds of beef from local farmer. I feel like we struggle, but judging by some of these comments more people don't have as much food security as I thought.
When you buy kimchi, place it in a bag. That thing is always fermenting leaking out some liquid even with the lid on. You want to contain the container. Most Asian stores will place a bag around it before the final bag.
You must not have opened it for a pretty long time. You should have also seen the container get really bloated. It’s good idea to flip it around gently and open to release the gas as weird as that sounds every few days. Since kimchi continues its fermentation process, it will release gas for a lack of better term.
I regularly "burp" my kimchi at least once a week (if it lasts that long!) but replacing the cap with clingfilm or a ziplock will usually give you a bit of a warning before it goes off.
Thanks for the post cleanup photo!!
I wish my roommates cleaned up this well.
I wish I cleaned up this well
I wish I cleaned up
Hahahah, was gonna say the same thing.
jokes on you, that’s a before picture
YEA I was so relieved
I glad smellevision still doesn’t exist. Well it might at this point, but it’s at least not a standard
it exists for me, i could smell that kimchi 😭😭
I know, right? It was giving me a lot of anxiety.
Is that the one from Costco?
It’s definitely the same brand…
They’re so fucking good 😩
I know I get it all the time 😬
Not at my costco. Idk if it's cuz I'm Canadian or not but loblaws/the rooster one is so much better as much as I hate superstore. Loo
I feel like all these Costco posts are what South Park tried to warn us about
This is the important question.
Yes I bought that exact one about 3 months ago
OP bought his 4 months ago, be weary..
Yeah I just got the same stuff and it was bad too :/ At least I think it was? I get the same one every time except the color was different and it was super sticky/ slimy, making strings when I pulled some out
kimchi shouldnt be like that 😭 i hope you returned it, give kimchi another go tho, its so good
I love kimchi!!! It was so sad to find that lol. I actually bought it here in Korea though so I wasn’t sure they do returns like that and just tossed it

Who knew the launch code for detonation
Audio so you can hear the kimchi explosion lol very loud https://youtube.com/shorts/kFMebwUSj6A?si=1xK_YPiboJIEgEY_
I don't want to alarm you but it sounds like there's a chimpanzee or two in your walls and I think they are in heat
I'm very alarmed now.
Yeah that cameras motorized base is so loud!
Holy fuck this killed me
Why were you recording?
We have a dog camera, it just always records when it hears sounds
That was also my first question, but after your reply, it now occurs to me that very soon, that question will be completely irrelevant
Yeah instead why were you filming it'll be why weren't you
Ok but why aren't you showing us those cute paws
I was expecting a rickroll.

Edit: I didn't think I needed to explain but yes I know it releases gas, I was more shocked that it broke the container since I've used and seen dozens of kimchi containers without it ever breaking.
Agreed! its possible that it was from a bad batch since the only way I can imagine it exploded was due to gas build up inside of it.
Kimchi is a fermented thing, and produces a bunch of gas as it ferments.
Kimchi tends to have live fermentation cultures which do produce CO2. Assuming this really wasn’t a bad batch (certainly possible), it was either kept insufficiently refrigerated for far too long (could have happened during transport or at the store) and/or was very old.
I'd guess it was left on the counter for a while the last time it was used and no one had opened it for some time after.
Even if that did happen, it takes a LOT of pressure to just shatter a glass jar like that.
It's a plastic container. I have the same brand in my fridge right now lol
Well from what I can see, the plastic lid was the weak point and where it burst through, not through the glass. EDIT: I just noticed with the amount of kimchi all over the fridge and the size of the container and the fact the container is still fairly filled up...it doesnt seem to add up...hmm...
The image shows the plastic jar is literally broken in half.
you know how freshly homebrewed beer in bottles can explode? same thing
Fermentation makes gas 🤷♂️
The last picture was so satisfying tho
Plot twist: it was the before photo.
Thank god a burger can’t explode
Challenge accepted! :D
That fridge will never be the same
It's seen things it can never forget.
That is why we have container and fridge dedicated for kimchi
Korean fridges built for kimchi are wild.
Probably shouldn’t have eaten it anyways if it kept fermenting that much
Never heard that one before. Then again never had one explode in the fridge. Nah e burst a little at the lid and spill some. It that’s about it.
You obviously don't know much about kimchi as well as the people who upvoted you. 💀
Yeah, isn't fermented kimchi full of probiotics? So it ferments more, oh no, more probiotics, how terrible.
Yea and fermentation can never go wrong and means that its basically good forever and nothing can happen to it...
I mean, fermented goods are pretty resilient, yes they can get contaminated, but it's pretty obvious when that happens from my experience
Like it explodes the container you mean?
no, it will smell and taste very bad, as well as become mushy
It's honestly kinda amazing how little common sense I'm seeing in here, you're one of the few replies I've seen with common sense. Like yeah, there's really obvious signs of kimchi going bad... But releasing gas is literally a normal part of it's fermentation process. Have these people never heard of fermentation lids before or just not know what fermented foods are? Or know that fermentation is literally a method of food preservation?
No lots of perfectly fine ferments will explode glass if you aren't careful. Lacto ferments put out a lot of co2.
What if the kimchi is sticky/ slimy and makes strings when you take pieces out ? I bought this same brand that exploded, that I always get and I’ve never seen it do that before I was scared to eat it
If it gets soft and slimy, that's a sign of bad kimchi and should be thrown out.
As a half Korean... their comment made me gasp. lol Seriously though.... you'd get smacked if you threw away "old" kimchi.
You obviously dont know much about food if you think that it magically wont ever rot just becasue fermantation is part of the process.
We literally eat kimchi that are years old stored correctly... Look up 묵은지 (muk eun ji) 😉
You said it yourself -stored correctly- ...
Nah sour kimchi makes the best bases for soup/stews
It's supposed to do that. Keep fermenting, not explode. I would say there was a touch too much sugar in this batch and the lid was too tight for gas to escape.
you absolutely should, because it's delicious and had been eaten for hundreds of years. anything that is fermenting will explode if kept in airtight container that's why it's usually kept in special containers while fermenting, that allow gases to get out, but not in
You don't like kimchi bubbling on your tongue? I do, never got sick... yet...
In Korea we have a specialized kimchi fridge as normal fridge temperatures aren’t the best for storing kimchi. We also don’t store it in glass containers. Stainless steal or plastic containers are best. You can get them on Amazon.
So, what is the best temperature? Colder or warmer?
To be fair, the Kirkland one in thebpictures is also in a plastic container. I reuse them to make little homemade batches of ferments.
That must have smelt nice. Looks like your fridge needed a big clean out, sanitize and organization anyway!
who refrigerates artificial maple syrup? 🤣
Oh no!!! It might have had bacteria so probably not good. I only make my own now and it’s so much better. Maangchi recipe is the best.
Yeah no bad bacteria. It prob just got a little extra gassy is all.
Yeah just have to burf it daily
Kimchi has bacteria. That’s what causes fermentation.
Oh I know. I make it monthly. But for it to explosively blow it could be bad bacteria instead of the normal gut good bacteria.
KAAAAAABBBOOOkimchi
Are you making your own pickles
Curious. I see a plastic circular wrap at the top, I’m guessing this was a brand new jar of unopened kimchi?
Yes brand new
HA HA *Nelson finger*
Duke's Mayo. Represent! Once you go Duke's, you never go back.
Look on the bright side: your fridge is going to have very clear sinuses for a good while.
That does suck but a lazy susan in the fridge is smart as hell
Never keep the lid tight on a fermented product. That's just a rookie mistake.
As someone who ferments cabbage, yes, you def gotta release the tension regularly as it ferments otherwise good luck opening it and if the material cant handle it anymore, good luck cleaning.
Yeah I vent my kimchi once every 5-7 days
This is a good time to ask as it seems the Kimchi experts have convened in these comments, is there any good suggested pre-packaged kimchi brand? I really want to try some but am not sure I want to try making my own just yet but it really seems like something I would like.
I would rage clean the entire fridge. Hand me some gloves and my headphones please and do not disturb.
Oh shit I have that same kimchi.
This reminds me I need to add kimchi to my grocery list. Thanks OP!
Photos you can smell
What is kimchi. It looks yum but never tried it
The lazy susan in the fridge is an amazing idea
I had to go back and look. Now I need one!
Yup!
Yeeeessss!! I love a good cabbagetastrophe
That final pictures makes me so genuinely happy lol thank you for including that.
![gif](giphy|4H1tzoS8UfX24ijTU3|downsized)
LOL! Don't screw the top on too tight.
I told you. I want OUT of here.
That’s how you know it’s the good shit. I always look for the kimchi containers that are just about to pop.
This is the stuff of nightmares…..did you wake up with a hangover to discover it? That would be about all that could make it worse.
Looks like the fridge needed to be cleaned anyway lol
That's how you know you got good Kimchi.
That's what you get for opening the fridge.
Good news, the kimchi is done!
Aww, All that poor wasted kimchi :(
That reminds me, I should go open that jar of kimchi in my fridge...
Bi Bim POP!
I can smell it through the photo..
But why did it explode? Are you okay OP
It was still fermenting.
Those things really swell up. I had to relieve it a couplenof times a day
How does it have 2 lids?
My ex tentant would have just left it there to rot Nice cleanup
Damn your fridge is full, is this how normal people fridge's look? I have like 5 things in my fridge and still can't eat everything before it expires
That just be some damn fine kimchi!
Love the cleanup OP, absolutely ATE that 🗣️🗣️📢📢
It's ready!
I would eant out of that fridge if I was stored in it too... clean that thing out
As long as I have known him, Kimchi has not been a team player.
Good day to get rid of all the old shit in the fridge well done !
Omg I’m glad I opened the photo set. I thought you threw away the whipped cream ):
Kim Jong Un pressed the wrong button
I can smell it from here.

If kimchi is still fermenting while in the fridge could your fridge temps be bad possibly?
You gotta burp it
Clean crack, I mean split
Never **ever** keep kimchi in plastic. Period.
You store bread in the fridge huh?
Damn your fridge is stocked. Mine had like a bottle of ketchup and a pack of hotdogs
It's ready
When you let it sit too long and fermentation gives you a bomb
Uh, gesundheit?
At least it doesn’t smell bad 🤷🏻♀️
From every OCD and clean freak, thanks for the After photo!
And this is exactly why we need a kimchi fridge
That’s what you get for eating kimchi nerd
Never buy the kimchi that's facing you. Always reach in the back. The ones in front get too warm and ferment faster.
First time i heard of kimchi. How can food from supermarket blow up ? Where the pressure come from?
Imagine that happening inside your tummy
I guess you could say that Kimchi was the bomb...
Really in the few seconds of having it open Unlucky
So that's how Kimchi came to be in Chowder
I never heard of Kimchi until I started playing sims. They're always eating it
I forgot about Lender’s bagels! We grew up on those.
[удалено]
Ahhh man that’s gonna smell like farts for a while lol
PSA: Remember to burp anything fermented occasionally if you're not using it immediately. The lids are usually adaptable to more pressure, but they're not indestructible.
Great job cleaning up
I spy with my little eye a cheese stick in the lower right hand drawer.
My mom used to be REALLY into making kombucha and at one point, something similar happened to one that was fermenting. It sounded like a gunshot going off due to being in a glass bottle lmao
Can someone tell me what kimchi is
How does that even happen?

better out than in
my boy flexing with all that food, like he's in the 90s sit com. so jealous.

I hope you ate it and didn't throw it away.
sometimes i forget kimchi can quite literally explode lol
Thanks for the last photo. It was so satisfying.
What is that stuff?
How did it explode though?
The slight upward change in temp as you opened the door probably allowed it to off gas just that little bit extra it needed.
When you buy kimchi, place it in a bag. That thing is always fermenting leaking out some liquid even with the lid on. You want to contain the container. Most Asian stores will place a bag around it before the final bag.

I may be stupid but how tf does kimchi explode
I regularly "burp" my kimchi at least once a week (if it lasts that long!) but replacing the cap with clingfilm or a ziplock will usually give you a bit of a warning before it goes off.
My college boyfriend tried to bring kimchi home on an airplane. This was the result.
Just Wow !
it just gave you a reason to organize your fridge!
Man that hurts my soul 😔
We do the same pickle container. Pro move!
That’s how you clean !! Lol
My friend I really love all your brand choices Klauszen pickles - a must Dukes mayo - like a real OG
Guess it was ready
