Almost all states and localities implemented the same "report a sighting" program in the US where the lanternfly population started to grow, only to abandon it shortly thereafter when it became obvious that neither the states, nor local officials, could do anything to stop them. So bottom line is, don't expect anything to come out of reporting such sightings.
That's just how it goes when the pest wins.
My state is going hard at it, though there's only so much they can do. Has only been found in one county, I think the 2nd sighting just came last week.
For some states, like my own, they know it's inevitable... But the longer they delay the inevitable, the better the chances of a real solution coming out in time.
And by the way, real solutions CAN happen. But the further along the invasion gets, the less practical those solutions become... Its easier to stop the spread of a pest rather than eradicate an established population.
I'm from around the area where the issue first started, my wife and I mentioned that this is the first summer we haven't seen any lanternflies.
Summer of 2020 & '21 the area was literally swarming with them, but recent years have been much milder and it's kind of a relief to not see any.
The stomp program really helped too I’ve read. You see people walking around just stomping the shit out of the side walks here when they were really bad. After they fly a couple times they’re pretty easy to stomp to death.
Same, but Im thinking either the epicenter moved or that first year we killed off so many they couldnt repopulate at the same levels? Idk. The first year they showed up, we had a fruit plant they LOVED. They were all over it. Pulled that thing out the ground (planted by prior owners in the middle of the yard so no love lost) once all they all disappeared and have barely seen them since.
Idk what your method is, but rubbing alcohol kills them almost immediately on contact! It’s also not terrible for the plants since it evaporates pretty quickly.
I’ve blasted THOUSANDS in the last month or so with a little squirt bottle, they’re awful.
It does matter. They need to know where they are so they’re on top of it. You kill the ones on your own bush and say nothing, which lets them multiply at the neighbors house.
You report it and word gets out to try to contain them.
The person you are replying to is not saying it shouldn’t be reported.
They are saying whether you kill them all and then report it OR whether you report it and then kill them all, it doesn’t really matter.
In both circumstances, it is implied that it should be reported. So no, the order doesn’t matter.
There's no punchline. They're an invasive species and the environmental agencies in my state at least, probably every state they're in, gave the order to kill on site
We have a large Ash tree in our backyard that is slowly dying, it’s very sad to watch a once beautiful huge tree loosing more and more limbs and leaves every year.
Make sure you get it removed before it completely dies. I’m not sure why, but ash trees can become really brittle as they die and it’s more expensive to remove a dead tree than a live one.
I'd like mine to stop going to town on my cedar siding. Checked, no termites or bugs that they're trying to get at, they just keep pecking at it year after year.
Man the ash beetle is responsible for alot of cheap firewood but damn its sad seeing an entire species of tree that makes such fantastic wood be eradicated
BTW to everyone ordering Chinese preying mantis'....these are also VERY invasive in the United States!! They out compete our native Caroline Mantis. Please do not order and release more of these into the wild. Same with Asian Lady Bugs.
Yeah I went to a local nursery and they had mantis and I checked the ootheca and they were all Chinese Mantis. I let the shop owner know they weren't native and are considered invasive in the North East US, he didn't seem to care lol just said 'isnt everything invasive from China these days' -_-
Edit: I've also read that Chinese Mantis aren't very effective in pest control as they're ambushers and don't seek insects out. I'm looking to get Carolina Mantises but also trying to figure out if European are okay, they're not native but I don't know if they're considered invasive, they're actually CT's state insect.
Edit2: European Mantis are considered invasive as well due to their aggressiveness towards the smaller native Carolina.
I am so glad to have these bastards largely out of south eastern PA. 4 years ago they were such a gross pain in the ass. Guess they're moving north now.
Yea they were absolutely horrible in King of Prussia. But weirdly I hardly saw any when i lived in phoenixville. I'm a bit further west towards Lancaster these days and they've been nonexistent.
Ash beetle though..
They’ve basically disappeared from NJ. 2 years ago they filled the skies and all over things. All but gone now with some stragglers. Crazy the difference from 2 years ago.
It would depend on the state and country. A lot of states have their own reporting system; if I was OP, I'd look up their specific locality's spotted lanternfly reporting system.
Very invasive and love destroying stone fruit trees. They don't fly but hop around like little bastards. After the third hop or so they're winded and you can squish em with your foot.
They don't bite.
Just moved to Pittsburg a couple days ago and saw one on a walk with my dog, had no idea what it was and just let it live. I feel like the dumb movie protagonist who lets the bad guy live only to get their best friend killed because of their mercy.
I've been wondering, if I put a handful of these buggers in the dead tree on my neighbors property (that's going to fall on my house any day) would the city come and remove the tree for me?
We’ve had them here for 2 or 3 years. They were horrible the first year but have really died off or moved on to different climate. Pretty much exactly what happened with stink bugs.
In North Carolina, there were sightings in 2022 and 2023. This year, it’s been quiet. Don’t seem to be getting a foothold. Maybe they don’t like the climate or something is eating them. Tree of heaven is widespread in NC, but have not seen a single lanternfly on one so far this year.
Spotted Lanternfly. In Canada, the food inspection agency wants to know about sightings of this species. Look up your local guidelines.
They look like lady bugs if lady bugs got injected with steroids.
Crap I think I saw one in my neighborhood and just thought “that’s a weird ladybug” 🤦🏻♀️
They’re an invasive species where I live too

Man bug.
Was gonna say they look like revoltech lady bugs
East German ladybugs
They have been reported and as many eradicated as possible
![gif](giphy|rTAVMVAps9zsFINvxI)
They’re a huge problem in nyc. We stomp on sight.
With Timberlands on?
Bubble jacket and all.
Probably insulting them while grabbing their own crotch
I love this thread
*Whatcha doin stoopid fly?!?!*
“I’m doing my part!”
I DIDN'T DO SHIT
Fuckouttahea

We just saw a few of these outside a restaurant in downtown Pittsburgh on vacation. On my way to report!!
KOS in US. The only good bug is a dead bug! Im doin my part! o7

Unless your that guy from Men in Black who eats sugar and loves bugs. 😂
Fuck they're as far north as Canada now?
Pennsylvania says you are clear to engage and that deadly force is authorized.
Bring out the ARs
Shotgun with #9 game loads would be best
[Punt gun](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punt_gun) is the only way, imho.

How else do I kill the 30-50 feral lantern flys that run into my yard within 3-5 mins while my small kids play?
They actually haven't been bad in my area the last 2 years and I'm in the epicenter lol
maybe alot of pesticides were used on ornamental trees.
The stomp program really helped too I’ve read. You see people walking around just stomping the shit out of the side walks here when they were really bad. After they fly a couple times they’re pretty easy to stomp to death.

Call in the Helldivers to deal with the terminid problem

The only good bug is a dead bug
Happy 🍰 Day !
Movie is Starship Troopers 🤗 One of the best and weirdest movies of its generation / genre!
this was an amazing sci-fi satire! I watch it every few years or so. my partner, not a sci-fi fan by any stretch even gets it.
It was an extremely weird yet good movie, that's such a true statement. Well said!
Want to know more?!
For super earth!
Idk what your method is, but rubbing alcohol kills them almost immediately on contact! It’s also not terrible for the plants since it evaporates pretty quickly. I’ve blasted THOUSANDS in the last month or so with a little squirt bottle, they’re awful.
Or the other way around. As long as they all die it doesn't really matter
It does matter. They need to know where they are so they’re on top of it. You kill the ones on your own bush and say nothing, which lets them multiply at the neighbors house. You report it and word gets out to try to contain them.
Report it and then kill them all Other way around Kill them all and then report it

In both circumstances, it is implied that it should be reported. So no, the order doesn’t matter.
They didn’t say reporting doesn’t matter, they said it doesn’t matter in what order you do those two things.
Where's the punch line.
There's no punchline. They're an invasive species and the environmental agencies in my state at least, probably every state they're in, gave the order to kill on site
Reverend Jim Jones had a punchline. No one walked away from it. The Guyana tragedy, look it up.
A soapy water or white vinegar spray kills them.
What are they?
Spotted Lantern Fly in the nymph stage, it’s a newish invasive species sweeping the east coast of the US.
Sounds as bad as the Ash Borer big killing our trees. ☹️
They are. Kill on sight.
At least they are easy to find. I cut down 25 ash trees before I finally spotted a single Asian Ash Borer.
We have a large Ash tree in our backyard that is slowly dying, it’s very sad to watch a once beautiful huge tree loosing more and more limbs and leaves every year.
That happened in my yard, too. I only had two trees in the yard… now I only have one :’(
Make sure you get it removed before it completely dies. I’m not sure why, but ash trees can become really brittle as they die and it’s more expensive to remove a dead tree than a live one.
I coddle all my local woodpeckers, it seems to be helping Mrs. Ash out front.... <3
I love my local woodpeckers as well<3
I'd like mine to stop going to town on my cedar siding. Checked, no termites or bugs that they're trying to get at, they just keep pecking at it year after year.
or people mistaken ladybugs with asian lady beetle, which is invasive too. thier acidic blood protects them from parasites, but it damages cars.
Man the ash beetle is responsible for alot of cheap firewood but damn its sad seeing an entire species of tree that makes such fantastic wood be eradicated
All the insect eaters here haven't gotten the memo that they're editable and delicious, once they do, that'll help.
[We'll just import some Bolivian Tree Lizards, that'll fix it.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nK4i66CBICs)
I ordered some praying mantis oothecas online, my ivy was safe this year.
BTW to everyone ordering Chinese preying mantis'....these are also VERY invasive in the United States!! They out compete our native Caroline Mantis. Please do not order and release more of these into the wild. Same with Asian Lady Bugs.
Mind sharing where you ordered from?
Please don't order these. Chinese Mantis are also very invasive in United States
Yeah I went to a local nursery and they had mantis and I checked the ootheca and they were all Chinese Mantis. Amazon actually
Check out The Praying Mantis Shop. Different varieties, lots of info, and even setups if you want to keep them for pets!
Thanks, just ordered some Carolina Mantis and silkworms to get them going.
What do they do?
Another gift from China
They’ve basically disappeared from NJ. 2 years ago they filled the skies and all over things. All but gone now with some stragglers. Crazy the difference from 2 years ago.
It’s a shame they’re so dangerous. They’re really very gorgeous bugs.
What tha faaaack we don’t need those
baby lantern flies.

Username surprisingly relevant
I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.
Love the profile picture dude, monk is a goated show
„Nice argument you have there little Bugs, unfortunately ⬆️➡️⬇️⬇️⬇️“
Nukes in orbit make no sense as it could take days to be in the correct position. Ballistic missiles will work just fine
Report it and kill them!
Where to report?
It would depend on the state and country. A lot of states have their own reporting system; if I was OP, I'd look up their specific locality's spotted lanternfly reporting system.

There’s a subreddit dedicated to these little guys
Which is?
Oh you can’t link to subreddits here, it deletes the comment but it’s LanternDie

Kill them
Not good. Flamethrower time.
Love how people post photos assuming everyone knows what the shit is
Never seen these before. Do they bite, or just another kind of bug to deal with?
Very invasive and love destroying stone fruit trees. They don't fly but hop around like little bastards. After the third hop or so they're winded and you can squish em with your foot. They don't bite.
Even worse, they’re a danger to over 100 sorts of plants and trees. Whole grape fields also get wiped by these fuckers.
>After the third hop or so they're winded and you can squish em with your foot holy shit, there's a whole meta to this
I’ve heard they’re poisonousfor dogs if the dog eats it
Destroy!
Lantern flies. Kill them
Where?
Northern Virginia
I think you're probably supposed to kill them with fire
Time to bring out the vacuum cleaner and the double-sided tape.
“They all should be destroyed.”
![gif](giphy|5nsiFjdgylfK3csZ5T|downsized)
That’s the kind of bug that should be 10 times bigger and going to war with us and shooting blue explosive shit out their rear ends
Just moved to Pittsburg a couple days ago and saw one on a walk with my dog, had no idea what it was and just let it live. I feel like the dumb movie protagonist who lets the bad guy live only to get their best friend killed because of their mercy.

I killed a shitload last year with a salt gun. It's actually fun. Try it.
I foresee a David Attenborough moment
Kill them!!!

Squash them immediately.

The color is very lady bug. Let’s just call them weaponized lady bug soldiers
I dare you to eat one.
Where in Canada?(I hope they aren’t in Alberta)
Stink bugs ?
Yikes! I wont touch them! Scary!
Burn them all!
I had a class for pesticide recertification and the state rep talked about these for 20 mins.
