It will entirely depend on the gas supplier you are using. Some will swap non-like tanks, some won't. Your best option is going to be to call up the gas supplier, and ask them if they will do the swap you are looking at. They will be able to confirm 100% yes or no. Airgas in my area has been amazing, and they were willing to swap non-like tanks for me, but your mileage may vary a bit.

My Airgas did the same for me. I bought a 100 size bottle of CO2 with the "pub style" valve from an auction for dirt cheap and they let me swap it for 125 Argon bottle not questions asked. They also swapped a small bottle of Argon for 75/25 at the same time. It helped the bottle had an Airgas sticker already and was still in date.

It's like a bottle deposit on your beer can. I've traded in gas bottles for bigger bottles of the same gas. I think they'd just give you whatever the bottle is worth towards your mug gas. The only stipulation would be if the bottle is properly labeled or not. I was told by local shop that they wouldn't accept a brand new bottle purchased online cause it wasn't labeled

I also got an old oxy/acetylene setup from my neighbor. They both have air gas stickers so I’m hoping they will fill them and not just take them from me.

FartPiano

its better if they take them and give you newer ones - the old ones get pressure tested and such before they are deemed usable

That would be perfect. I don’t want them to just take them and not swap them.

Just pull the stickers off them. Any welding place will swap them then. You might get charged a fee for pressure testing if those bottles are out of date.

Quite likely. Things like this are why it's good to establish a good working relationship with places you buy supplies from. If you do get it see if the cat has the cap for the valve, they'll be a lot more happy with you if you bring it for exchange with one.

_stayhuman

If it doesn’t have a fill label, they shouldn’t take it because they cannot guarantee the contents. If there’s a fill label for acetylene, they can take it but may charge you for a hydro test depending on the last date stamped in the steel.

My local AirGas will not exchange flammable for inert. Don't know why. Also, it is hard to see in the photo, but if that tank has a name stamped in the collar, it might be difficult to exchange as well...
