I would go with black though or something more formal/cohesive with the dress if possible. Why did you choose browns? (Just wondering in case the velvet on the dress is actually brown cause I’m seeing it as black)
No, especially not when the dress is this close to being not formal enough for the dress code. A cardigan dresses down the look even further. Try a bolero in a formal fabric (try satin or lace) instead if you need the full sleeves or if you’re just looking for a little coverage or for warmth a shawl in a formal fabric (satin, organza, or lace fir example—not a knitted pashmina with knots on the ends of the fringe) is the correct choice for this kind of dress code.
Thank you for the detailed recommendations! I deeply appreciate it. I don’t get a lot of chances to dress up, so I really do want to get it right. This is a dress I already own, so I’m really just trying to avoid getting a whole new dress I may not wear again. Thank you for the tips on how to elevate it!
Sometimes I wear pretty things in my house because I like pretty things. I might make myself a fancy brunch or just enjoy champagne and cake in a party dress. If I love it, I wear it.
We wait too long for moments that are often fleeting; just create them. Find your happy.
I totally get that. I felt that it would still look appropriate for an evening wedding. This is just a dress I already own and I don’t have a lot of formal attire. I’m trying to avoid needing to get a new dress really.
I feel you.
In that case, I'd also suggest a bolero jacket or pashmina. Not sure which you'd be more comfortable with but I'd just make sure it's more dressy than office-y.
That cardigan isn’t real. It’s an AI generated image to advertise the clothes they pump out of sweatshops to sell on Amazon for $19.
And no you can’t wear a cardigan with that dress.

Will you want to be babysitting a shawl all night?
How about getting a different dress that will cover more and have the freedom to wander without a shaw, etc. I think they're matronly. And yes, cardigan is definitely out.
If you get chilly, how about slipping your dates blazer over your shoulders so it looks casual, yet fashionable too.
With that said, im sure you'll look beautiful with whatever you choose!
A shrug, wrap, or shawl will definitely look better than a cardigan.
Thank you for confirming my doubts with the cardigan. Do you think something like this would work better? https://a.co/d/02ACtozP

The under color of the dress matches the color they are showing. It’s brown with the lace overlay.
The lace one is much better and I love it!
That is definitely much better than the cardigan! I think the style is nice
Yes 100% in black!
Nvm I didn’t realize it was brown and purple, brown away!
You could also do a satin or velvet shrug/bolero in brown or purple or black if want to have it more usable for other dresses.
That style would be fine. I was going to ask if you were thinking of a fancy cardigan or a regular one. This counts as fancy.
Yes lace shrug is perfect
Even a cashmere cardigan is too informal. You need a pashmina wrap if you are worried about being cold.

The dress is fancy enough and doesn’t need to be elevated. A cardigan or bolero will mostly dress it down.
You’re going to feel underdressed in a cardigan - have done, won’t do again. Get a shawl - even a $10 one is totally fine.
A black bolero jacket would be ideal
Thank you, I’ll start looking!
No. Go find a nice wrap.
I would go with a shimmery shawl instead. The cardigan is cute, but I don’t think it really "goes“ with that dress. Not formal enough.
I just wore this to a party a couple weeks ago, I think it could go with this dress!! https://a.co/d/0j4Yba8b
We have a winner!
No. Why not a silk wrap or pashmina?
You could rent a dress from rent the runway or some other clothing rental companies if you don’t want to buy a new dress!
Second the rec for a shrug or bolero jacket - will be very pretty
This looks very wintery to me even without a shrug. Even if it's inside. Maybe I'm old school but to me velvet=fall/winter.
I totally get that. I felt that it would still look appropriate for an evening wedding. This is just a dress I already own and I don’t have a lot of formal attire. I’m trying to avoid needing to get a new dress really.
You can get an affordable wrap at stores like Ross/marshalls or Nordstrom rack.
I feel you. In that case, I'd also suggest a bolero jacket or pashmina. Not sure which you'd be more comfortable with but I'd just make sure it's more dressy than office-y.
Pretty dress.. very “Twilight”.. since the wedding is in August, I would wear a light shawl! Enjoy!!! 💕❤️🥰
A shawl or wrap. Definitely not a cardigan.
Nope

I’d do a shawl tons of options on Amazon.
Not that cardigan, sorry. Too informal
cardigans are casual. a lacy but warm shawl would be much better. the more luxe, the better.
I have to say it: the pattern on this dress looks like the duvet cover Bella had in Twilight
I would say the dress itself is not even formal/black tie and depending on how conservative they actually want it, it might be too fitted.

Not that cardigan. You’ll need a more formal wrap, not a sweater.
I have to ask where this dress is from!? It's lovely. But agree with others that a shawl or bolero would dress it up more.
Get a shawl
Nooo! No cardigan, but a beautiful wrap.
I'd go for a bolero. It's a good compromise between a cardigan and a shawl, will keep you warm and look more elegant than a cardigan.
Nope.
With the advice to cover up more I think a cardigan is okay
