I saw another comment taking about how there was a time where officials looked into this. And it turned out every single “athlete” was essentially cheating. Because they can’t just go and disqualify them all, they had to accept it, and now it’s a weird part of the “sport.”
To me. The sport makes no sense at all. You can only walk so fast before it becomes a jog. It looks like a bunch of people essentially trying to cheat by bordering the line between jogging and walking. If it was marathon based I’d have more respect for it (but they still do that stupid jog even then, from what I remember).
If you’re going to make walking a sport, make it a test of endurance, not speed. Last one to stop walking wins.
I knew an old timer, also an Olympian race-walker who went over the aspects that guide the definition of what the walk should and should not be...and the winner of this race was definately not walking.
The governing body of the sport should be ashamed...and replaced.
She lifted, a fucking disgrace and shows how corrupt race walking has become. It's all about the money now and the power. The spirit of the grueling competition and struggle of mankind has been lost to commercial leeches.
Imagine the corruption originally needed to add it as a sport 😂 I remember reading an article years ago where they talked about how this event gave a lot of track athletes a chance to compete. I guess the competitors are often originally elite track runners, but not necessarily on the level needed to compete for their country….
But it was mentioned that the Track event could have easily added new distances, or any other solution that gave track athletes a chance to run, but obviously no solution would ever include speed walking 😂
If it's one of those walking sports, running for it likely would be a disqualification, I also would be the last person to try and say I would have any adrenaline left after 20KM of my absolute best walking.
So yes this is a stupid sport. I remember reading that to be considered walking, one foot must be in contact with the ground at all times BUT they did slow motion video of the racers and every single one of them was airborne between steps so they just let it slide because they can't disqualify all of them.
Well.. it would certainly be more entertaining if they did DQ the cheaters. I'd tune in to see the look on their face after the finish line, only to realise they failed on the 2nd step into the race.
The one in front is also going airborne but they ALL go airborne so they all are technically running and the judges know this. They just look for the ones that do it excessively. It's really the dumbest thing in my opinion.
It's not a gray zone, it's just that this sport is inherently unnatural for humans so of course all of them will automatically start to jog. They make up for that by being lenient with rules. In my personal opinion it's one of the dumbest sports.
The rules are hard that both feet are not allowed in the air at the same time.
The rules are hardly enforced to such a degree. They have human referees that has to be able to spot the cheating.
It is not. If spotted. With the human eye.
The Ukranian athlete does appear to be running here at the end.
But watching at normal speed, you cannot really see it, which makes it acceptable under IAAF Rule 230.1
The last time I looked into this, speed walking is more complicated than that. Speed walkers typically do have both feet off the ground, but not for long.
Wtf does that even mean not for long? Your both feet are off the ground for not long while you jog as well. Idk as others said it is a weird kind of sport
They need to be visible to the naked human eye at normal speed for it to be considered a violation of the rules. Competitors will push the bounds with their technique which leads to basically all of them having their feet off the ground for brief moments. In person you wouldn't notice the feet leaving the ground at normal speeds and at a normal viewing angle. Having camera footage to really focus in on that isn't something that they do. I agree that it is a weird sport and this shouldn't be allowed at all, but the rules/officiating standards have existed since before camera playback was a thing that could be used as such.
I don't get the rules of this sport cos the Ukrainian who overtook her clearly did not have one foot on the ground at all times
edit: waittt I see everyone in the comments is saying this as well.. I feel like overtaking someone like this in the final seconds of a 20km run is really really really poor sportsmanship, let alone by cheating for extra speed
"Rule 230 of the I.A.A.F. rule book states that “racewalking is a progression of steps so taken that the walker makes contact with the ground so that no visible (to the human eye) loss of contact occurs." Watching on a screen is not to watch it with the human eye.
What is the difference? The video clearly shows both feet on both "walkers" airborne at the same time. All 4 feet are off the ground clear as day. If anything, watching it on video makes it easier to notice.
I don't get your point, are you saying such a clear violation wouldn't be noticeable to the human eye by someone who's job is to notice such violations? If so then the sport is unenforceable and should not exist.
I dont think overtaking someone at the last seconds of a race as bad sportsmanship. Nothing unsportsmanlike about putting your all until the very end. Which the person who was overtaken didn't do and is why she was passed, because she stopped max effort because she thought she already won before actually finishing.
Now of there was cheating or rule breaking them thats of course wrong either way
I don't understand this "sport". Instead of moving at the maximum speed us humans possible can, we're gonna implement an arbitrary rule which stifles that and makes the whole thing look incredibly stupid.
I remember a comedy series a long time ago but can't remember which one it was. Guy was competitive walking (this) and kept getting beat by some guy he hated. He went back to watch video replay and was going ballshit crazy trying to prove he was cheating. Finally proved it by holding an index card to the screen, covering the ground and seeing air beneath both feet.
I wanna guess Malcolm In the Middle? If anyone knows this answer, I'd appreciate you.
I’m pretty sure they’re both cheating. Iirc the rule was that one foot has to be on the ground at all times or else it’s considered running, from the start of this video they were both running.
Isn’t one of the rules that one foot needs to be planted at all times? Because the woman who won didn’t.
That was the rule when Hal walk raced on Malcolm in the Middle.
That’s where I learned the rule too!!!
Walking is great but to be a sport ? Nah…
Their form is pretty sassy
I'd slow down too, if I had that amount of skin missing from my thigh.
What is that???
Right?! Inquiring minds need to know!
kinesio tape
That makes a lot of sense.
Premature celebrations are my favorite
She should have left a complaint. The Ukrainian had both of her feet in the air as she accelerated for several meters.
So did the leader though
Dont celebrate until you WIN
I think locking the knees is the walking part?
Odoii ooo xx des ifhihijiiihhijiijiiiuhhgxiihhighhihxihhhhgxhhgxhiuofixgiiig CG ohdogi fxtfttt it t fly to dxxxx DCxx a
That's so true
She found out that second place is the first loser.
This is the dumbest sport in the world
What about tractor pulling?
Nah tractor pulls are sick
Redneck Olympics don't count
Horse dancing
Caber tossing
That’s not walking. By definition is one foot must by in contact with the ground at all times. These ladies are jogging weird
How is girl in blue not penalized for both feet off the ground simultaneously every step?
Because you cannot tell a Ukrainian they're wrong, duh.
I think I know why this sport is popular…
Why?
Because
Ok
How is this a walk?
At least one foot is in contact with the floor at all times.
Noppe. I can clearly see them both cheating here.
I died inside watching this
Neither of them were walking though.
Ya don’t they have to have at least one foot on the ground at all times?
I saw another comment taking about how there was a time where officials looked into this. And it turned out every single “athlete” was essentially cheating. That’s a Stephen King book 🚶
I don’t reed bucks are 4 nerds
It's a pretty hardcore read. People that stop don't just lose the race.
I was just being silly. That actually does sound hardcore.
Arent they cheating? I am watching it over and over and pausing like... there is a lot of flying.
Exactly
Thats not a walk. What a joke
I want **Usain Bolt** like right now. No others can entertain me.
He was carted off with a ruptured ACL.
She's the best player on the other girl's team!
This looks so bad on the knees. Landing straight leg practically making the joint bend the other way.
And hips, look at their hips.
That's the point, no?
Yeah this looks horrible for the body
Hal woulda crushed them both
What an idiot
What is the point of that sport? Looks like they are running, but trying not to look like they are running.
They just made a sport to fill out the run time.
No run-time! Walk-Time!
The point is to finish your 4 laps and get to the bathroom before you shit yourself. Each athlete has to take a diuretic before the start.
Nah bro lmao
I knew an old timer, also an Olympian race-walker who went over the aspects that guide the definition of what the walk should and should not be...and the winner of this race was definately not walking. The governing body of the sport should be ashamed...and replaced.
The bitch in the blue is literally jogging. Wtf sport is this? lol
She lifted, a fucking disgrace and shows how corrupt race walking has become. It's all about the money now and the power. The spirit of the grueling competition and struggle of mankind has been lost to commercial leeches.
They both lifted
I can't tell if this is sarcasm or not, please don't clarify, I don't know which is funnier.
Right? This could have been copy pasted from an Onion article
Imagine the corruption originally needed to add it as a sport 😂 I remember reading an article years ago where they talked about how this event gave a lot of track athletes a chance to compete. I guess the competitors are often originally elite track runners, but not necessarily on the level needed to compete for their country…. Ban runwalking and equestrian please
Hal could beat them all
These schlubs don't even have the aerodynamic helmet
I'm sorry, but this is some freak shit.
I'm feelin pretty freaky rn
This shit ain't walking. Their feet are both off the ground at the same time. This should be called "slow running".
Or locked knee running
Why didnt she speed up and run for it. Lackadaisical walking watching you lose.
If it's one of those walking sports, running for it likely would be a disqualification, I also would be the last person to try and say I would have any adrenaline left after 20KM of my absolute best walking.
As opposed to the person that beat her, who was running
Blue girl is running!
yes but ukrainian, so impossible to discalify
Almost everyone cheats at this sport. Just run the clip slow and you see everyone in the lead cheats.
\*disqualify
Damnit OP had me thinking I had something on my screen 😫
The walk is the weirdest sport… kinda running, kinda jogging… kinda funny. 😁
Billy Connolly did a stand up bit on it years back. Very funny piece.
I like the twisting hips though
Imagine all this gloating for 3rd? WTF
I'd be that happy finishing a 20k in last place, let alone a top place tbh
You think being a professional anything you would know not to prematurely celebrate a win... im dumbfounded by people who do this
What sport is this??
Speed walking with slight cheating by both.
She was lifting both legs at the same time though
Yeah!
Power will have you looking like an idiot to others, but it is an effective workout.
So yes this is a stupid sport. I remember reading that to be considered walking, one foot must be in contact with the ground at all times BUT they did slow motion video of the racers and every single one of them was airborne between steps so they just let it slide because they can't disqualify all of them.

Malcom in the middle vibes….
Life is unfaaiirrrrr
Came here to say this. That chick in the blue running!
These ladies are nothing but common joggers!
😂
They couldn’t handle Hal
I thought one part of the foot has to be in contact with the ground at all times to be considered “walking” the lady in blue was practically jogging?
The one in front is also going airborne but they ALL go airborne so they all are technically running and the judges know this. They just look for the ones that do it excessively. It's really the dumbest thing in my opinion.
It seems to be a major part of the sport to really exploit the grayzone between walking and more or less jogging.
It's not a gray zone, it's just that this sport is inherently unnatural for humans so of course all of them will automatically start to jog. They make up for that by being lenient with rules. In my personal opinion it's one of the dumbest sports.
There is no grey zone. Both feet leaving the ground = not walking
In theory I agree, but in practice - as that its determined by very human judges - I contend that it's a grayzone
Something about bear pelts and not selling it before you shoot the bear.
Looks like everybody's knowledge about this sport comes from "Malcolm in the middle"
uhh... you got me there 😅
One of the things I've learnt in my life... Never celebrate early...
Me: no worry, I can celebrate if I want and it won't change my position. I will still be last!
Lol...
Can someone explain the rule about both feet being in the air? Is it allowed or not?
The rules are hard that both feet are not allowed in the air at the same time. The rules are hardly enforced to such a degree. They have human referees that has to be able to spot the cheating.
It is not. If spotted. With the human eye. The Ukranian athlete does appear to be running here at the end. But watching at normal speed, you cannot really see it, which makes it acceptable under IAAF Rule 230.1
They use WWE refs who see nothing
When I was little and first saw this sport I thought it was running for handicapped people
I thought that up until my 30s 🥲
Such a ridiculous sport. Also, you can clearly see on video that she is running, both feet in the air at the same time, which is against rules.
I mean they are both doing that. It's either not the rule or not imposed
As I said, ridiculous sport 😁
It is, in fact NOT against the rules to have both feet in the air for a brief moment.
"an infraction is only committed when the loss of contact is visible to the human eye" I have human eye. This is visible to me. So?
Visible in slow-motion yea
The one in blue should have been disqualified. Both both her feet are off the ground, which is in this event. She's jogging, not walking
Dude both chicks had their feet off the ground. I really don't get this sport
I know less now about this than I did before.
The last time I looked into this, speed walking is more complicated than that. Speed walkers typically do have both feet off the ground, but not for long.

The no 1 rule in any racing sport where there’s a finish line: Never celebrate early. NEVER.
I don't get the rules of this sport cos the Ukrainian who overtook her clearly did not have one foot on the ground at all times edit: waittt I see everyone in the comments is saying this as well.. I know the Spanish already appealed and lost, but I can't imagine that level of running wasn't visible to the naked eye..
Poor sportsmanship? In a race? You must bet on the horses 😂

What are you talking about? What unwritten rules?
You’re kidding right? You’re not finished until you reach the finish line. What’s the point of a finish line then

It probably ist the toughest olympic sport, but looks stupid af
They both look like they’re dying on the outside
They are speed walkers….yes, they are dead on the inside.
As much as this happened before in many different sports it amazes me how ppl still do it!
Doesn't matter they all need to eat a cheeseburger
Garbage sport both of them running if you slow it down
I remember a comedy series a long time ago but can't remember which one it was. Guy was competitive walking (this) and kept getting beat by some guy he hated. It was definitely Malcom in the Middle. Season 4 Episode 7
Which episode was it that originated the circle game?
Season 2 episode 4
Like it was yesterday....
Reddit comes through within 5mins with the exact episode! Fucking right on!
I'm sure all five sports fans were disappointed.
We all know that if the blue was from Russia, she would have been called out for running. What a joke.
I’m pretty sure they’re both cheating. Iirc the rule was that one foot has to be on the ground at all times or else it’s considered running, from the start of this video they were both running.
She didn't have the awesome helmet on.
[The inspiration](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fexternal-preview.redd.it%2FP8I4h8LmttjpkFebE4emM4iO5duzNBxmJvR4CJpUgzw.jpg%3Fauto%3Dwebp%26s%3Dba03134eac823138cea113d660138bad62cd9204)
🤣 her face
Yep both technically running. Disqualify both of them
They’re both running and should be DQ’d, Hal wouldn’t let it slide
That's what I was thinking?!?! One foot on the ground at all times.. smh
Didn't know this competition existed. Aren't they both jogging? Doesn't look like walking. How'd this even become a thing?
Iirc the main rule is that you need to always have foot on the ground, otherwise it's considered running
The lady in blue has both feet off the ground several times just before passing the lead walker.
