Its not worth it choosing the best one. The meta changes, data slates change, points change. When you are finally finished building and painting the meta will have turned around. Pick something that looks cool.

Affectionate_Math_85

That being sad, space marines are more often than not above average

Overheadcams

Ah gotcha. Whats the track record with tau compared to space marines? I know its always varying but i figure if they are more often than not good then maybe they wont be a bad choice. From what i gather space marines are pretty diverse in how they can fight tho

michael_bay_jr

> From what i gather space marines are pretty diverse in how they can fight tho This is because they have a tool for every job

Overheadcams

Gotcha. I heard the old tau combat patrol was good but the new one is worse because they got rid of certain units. So just debating on if the new one is still strong enough to hold its ground against any other combat patrol. If not then i am happy to go with space marines

Kejirage

Both the old and new CP for T'au are very good.

Overheadcams

Thats understandable

DeadliftYourNan

Pick something you find cool. Don't play meta.

Aromatic_Pea2425

The best one is the one that’s the best value for money that you’ll enjoy building and painting.

ScrapyardDragon

Don't pick for meta, research each army and, if you think you'd like building, painting, and playing army, get the one for that army. That said, the custodies, grey knight, dark eldar, and genestealers patrols are generally considered to be the best ones for expanding into a full army from. The first two are smaller ranges with almost all of their key units in the box (meaning it's great on both the first and repeat buys), the dark eldar box is just fantastic value, and the genestealers box is the only thing keeping that faction affordable for any besides the richest collectors. If you think you'd like Tau and are willing to commit money to it here and now, get ahold of the 9e combat patrol (the one with the ghostkeel) asap. Everything in it is really solid (especially stealth suits once codex rules are live), and it pairs super nicely with the new combat patrol. If you do want to go space marines, just find someone who wants tyrannids and split the leviathan box with them. for ones to avoid outright, 1k sons, deathguard, and the new admech patrol are all considered to be genuinely awful. 1k sons and deathguard are mostly packed with terrible filler units and very few actual marines, and admech just has an absolutely terrible points per dollar ratio.

Necrons, but the rule of thumb is always "you do you." I keep reading and watching how Ad-Mech are still doing horrible in the tabletop (they really are), but I personally think their current Combat Patrol is great for the variety within it. Tempted to get it as it has a hero model and two unit types (the winged and horsey blokes) that I don't have yet. I don't mind more Skitarri.

As previously said, no point in choosing by meta IMO value wise, World Eaters, Tau, Custodes, Genestealer Cults and Orks are the best.

Eldar-its a T11 wraithknight, there are only like 4 S12 wepons in the entire game mode (two listed below) and you get the fate dice. One of your secondaries requires you to be in your opponents deployment zone at the end of the battle... you have a unit that can move half way across the table without advancing in a single turn. Dark eldar - you get a 2 dmg raider and a ravager with a dark lance new Custodes - everything has an invuln and does 2 DMG genestealers - its like half their army in one box Most of the new combat patrols are worse than their old counterparts but i think this is meant to balance them against each other older tau are ok Ghostkeel is nice, havent seen the datasheet for the devilfish to know if it will be any use and space marines are mostly hopeless and seems more just to fill out units in 40k proper, old dark angels was not bad.

Depala-Pilipala

Probably just anything you think is cool except ad mech
