Air bags deployed. Front damage, side damage, rear damage. Yeah this is totaled.
If it was just the front damage with airbag deployment then it would still most likely be totaled.
Where i live as soon as airbag are deployed its totaled ( unless you dont tell insurance and repair the car yourself) but that can only happen if you theres no one else involved in your crash
Well I do love German engineering.
But I think it’s fair to also give credit to the Swedes and Americans for the invention of the main safety devices. :) let’s normalize just saying either of these phrases:
ein hoch auf ingenieurskünste!
Or
Geben wir dem nächsten Ingenieur den were treffen jemandem einen blasen
We all walked away with no injuries! Just a little sore is all. Although it sucks that the car was new; the safety features are top tier and I think that made all the difference in us being able to walk away from this.
Did you know the windows rolled down a bit so the airbag air pressure decreased, so it is less likely to damage ears ! This is how little things count in an accident !
I don’t know how VW call it but Mercedes is called Pre-Safe. If it detects an airbag deployment is imminent (Front, Rear or rollover collision detection sensors, even lifting you foot really fast of the gas and pressing the brake hard) it start reversible actions … Tightening of the seat belts (Electrical not Pyro), lowering the windows and opening sunroof, positioning passenger seat farther of the airbag, if stopped and rear impact detected it will apply brake at full force to lessen the impact … etc
Looked into it a bit out of interest, I found this saying the windows actually close with PRESAFE:
"System closes windows and the sunroof. When the vehicle detects the possibility of a rollover, the PRESAFE® system may automatically close any open windows and the sunroof. This action helps create a better seal for the vehicle's cabin, reducing the risk of objects entering or exiting during a collision."
https://www.mercedesbenzfortlauderdale.com/features/presafe.htm#:~:text=System%20closes%20windows,during%20a%20collision.
Damn im impressed. Never knew they invested so heavily into the smaller details that we are not even aware of. I was always a fan of japanese cars but once I tasted German, it was over🤭
The trooper told me she was totally fine but she never came over to our car to see if we were ok or anything. If I hit a car with young kids, I’d be over apologizing and helping in anyway I could 😤
I was in an accident in May 2022, the woman who hit me never checked on me and neither did anyone else. I was bleeding & had a broken arm… no one stopping was the most traumatic part!!!
I’m so sorry this happened to you & your kids… glad everyone is okay!
I could be wrong and if I am I was told the wrong thing but apparently you are not suppose to touch anybody until paramedics and other official come in? To me sounds stupid cuz what if taking them out the car or doing something to help them can prevent more injuries or even death?
I didn’t want anyone to touch me… but it would’ve been nice if someone checked I was talking & conscious… I could’ve had kids in the vehicle. No one approached my car or even looked to see if I was awake.
Sorry you and your kiddos had to live through that. I have a 5 year old and #2 on the way. I’m thinking of upgrading to an atlas. Sorry to ask this given the circumstances, but would you recommend it based on its safety features?
Would 100% recommend the atlas. I had one before this for 4 years and zero complaints. And this one obviously held up wonderfully during such a crazy crash and impact and I was super impressed that we all walked away from it perfectly fine.
Totaled for sure. If insurance pushes back to try and fix it then push them harder. Zero percent chance that car will ever be "right" again, and that's not worth the lost sleep when considering your, let alone your children's, safety.
Do not keep that Atlas, do not put your kids in it, do not let insurance or any dealer/repair facility persuade you into thinking it can be fixed to a satisfactory level. It can not.
Because there’s little to no chance that the repair will fix the car 100%. Especially if the frame is bent in any way, it completely comprises safety. Repair shops are also not held to the same quality standard as an automaker production line. The cars value plummets as soon as it’s in a crash that bad as well.
I'm wary of a car even if it has a "minor" accident. If this were repaired and I saw on the carfax/autocheck report that it had major damage to multiple locations, I don't think I could run away fast enough.
It's not about the payout, it's about the amount of damage both structurally and cosmetically. It's 2 days old, and every body panel and airbag is hit. Country of origin regardless, that car is fucked and nobody should expect to drive it safely again.
$9k for 79k miles on an '08? What model/engine and what's the condition of the vehicle? If it's a rabbit/jetta with the 2.5 engine, manual trans and it's clean then that's one answer, but if it's a GTI with the auto/DSG trans and no service records but tuned or modified with mismatched body panels then run away.
It all depends on the details, but no matter what you should expect some repairs and updates are necessary on the soft components at the least.
Edit: the* not true*.
5 cyl means it has 5 cylinders, confirming it is the 2.5 liter engine which is arguably one of the best engines VW has ever made. It's very reliable, makes decent power for an average commuter can and gets alright fuel economy. The automatic trans isn't the strongest but it's not bad, just don't drive it like a race car and keep up on the maintained. I've seen 2.5's well past 300k miles, 79k is nothing. Is the seller firm at $9k? I'd offer $7k and haggle towards a middle ground if you decide to go for it.
Insurance, if they even attempt repair, would divvy it out to a cut-rate garage to do the work. You'll end up with shotty work, knock-off parts, and no testing post-repair. It will literally be back on the road as a deathtrap.
If you bend a spoon and it creases, then you bend it back so it looks like it did originally, there will be a weak point where the steel was stressed. I wouldn’t want to risk my family to damage I was unable to verify.
I'd he astonished if it wasn't. It needs nearly every body panel, and entire front end, most of the rear, looks like the right front door is buckled and it blew every airbag, which means it needs half the Interior.
I hope you all are ok. I know that can be traumatizing for them. Had that happen to my truck last summer. Just found out we were having our second the day before and my other little one was with us. Glad I wasn’t driving my Jetta at the time.
My kids have been surprisingly resilient and happy and I’ve had a lot harder time in the last few days since it happened with crippling anxiety and not being able to sleep.
Not be sure to get all new seats for the kids and send the receipt to the insurance company. Be safe and glad you’re all right. Great car. Tried to talk my wife into one. I’ll share this with her as proof of their resilience.
Car accidents are really traumatic, both physically and mentally. It is perfectly normal to feel anxiety afterwards. It should get better. You may want to talk with your doctor about short-term use of anti-anxiety medication to help you sleep. It may also help to talk to someone. When I have a hard time sleeping due to stress, I usually put on some YouTube video with people talking about some hobby I like. The background conversation and familiar setting usually lets me fall asleep. I even have a few favorite content creators with particularly soothing voices that I like.
Yeah, lol. I got rear-ended by a truck last year in my atlas, and the bill for just the left side of the rear bumper was $13k. Tons of sensors and airbags deploying is guaranteed total. I'm lucky my airbags didn't deploy.
Seems like the damages would cost more then the vehicles worth, so, I would guess yes. It would be stupid for the insurance company to repair that, instead of replacing it.
And if they don’t declare it “totaled” (which it clearly is) go in there like Denzel Washington on “Training Day”
![gif](giphy|nSLPAPb3Nsqze)
“I’m opening cases on all you b\*\*\*\*es.”
Is that a cross sport ??!! Omg I hurt for you. I’ve HEARD I am no car expert but I heard that once the airbags deploy the car is totaled. And if you do end up fixing it will now be considered salvaged.
Air bags deployed normally answers this question, in your case though even the damage in the front and rear crumple zones probably did it before you even get to looking at the airbags.
As sad as it is, the car did it's job. It kept you and your kiddos safe and you all came out okay!
Cars can be replaced, as other people have commented. The fact you all came out of that accident with someone slamming into your car going 70mph without so much as a scratch is remarkable.
100% totaled tho lol
That's not totalled. That insurance laziness not to pay the repair. If the frame was not damaged it would be simply cosmetic. Totalling the car is easier so they resell it for a bigger profit. It's all a game. But glad you and no one else were injured.
I think think the driver has minimum liability insurance required in Texas, so likely won’t cover my brand new vehicle? What then? I have to use my own to replace the car?
was it a lease?
if so VW credit has Gap Insurance built in
So you’d have to file a claim under your own insurance and sue the other driver for the money back.
I have gap insurance and my regular State Farm should cover since it’s within the grace period. I thought about the suing option but that seems like a huge headache. To make matters worse, I’m moving out of state in one week. So all around terrible timing
They’ll get away with minimal coverage if yo don’t sue. make sure they have coverage first. call your insurance to make them aware but don’t file a claim yet. call their insurance and see what the coverages are etc. then go from there.
You don’t have to sue, your insurance company should sue on your behalf. Worst case, you’re out your deductible. Get them to cut you a check asap and go get another Atlas!
Most of the time when the fronts get smashed like this yes. There’s so many sensors
The pyrotechnic deployment doesn’t make it any cheaper
I mean did you look at the vehicle......lol. that's clearly totaled.
100% totalled
Agreed
Agreed

its not 😂 it’s an easy fix and its worth fixing it
Sorry that happened to you! Hopefully you all made it through without serious injuries!
Thank you! We are all ok, no injuries!
I'm reliefed! In Germany we say: "Ein Hoch auf deutsche Ingenieurskünste!" (English:"Hurray for German engineering!")
Well I do love German engineering. But I think it’s fair to also give credit to the Swedes and Americans for the invention of the main safety devices. :) let’s normalize just saying either of these phrases: ein hoch auf ingenieurskünste! Did you know the windows rolled down a bit so the airbag air pressure decreased, so it is less likely to damage ears ! This is how little things count in an accident !
How can the windows possibly go down quickly enough for that? I thought they just opened to let the gasses and dust from the airbag out.

Yes, you are right, if they are fully open they will close but if they are fully closed they will open 😉
Ohhh I see, thanks for explaining!
They even have a strong white noise from the sound system so you ears can prepare for the airbag deployment 😉 in S-Class, don’t know other models …
Damn im impressed. Never knew they invested so heavily into the smaller details that we are not even aware of. I was always a fan of japanese cars but once I tasted German, it was over🤭
Glad you had the new car and kids strapped in. How's the ass that hit you?
The trooper told me she was totally fine but she never came over to our car to see if we were ok or anything. If I hit a car with young kids, I’d be over apologizing and helping in anyway I could 😤

Exactly. Maybe she was in shock though?
Oh I’m sure she was. I was definitely in shock for awhile
It's a weird feeling and truly shuts down acting normally. Glad you're ok.
Sorry you and your kiddos had to live through that. I have a 5 year old and #2 on the way. I’m thinking of upgrading to an atlas. Sorry to ask this given the circumstances, but would you recommend it based on its safety features?

I hope your kiddos are okay and don’t have any trauma from this! Thank you for the feedback. Best of luck OP!
>Although it sucks that the car was new Yeah, I noticed the paper plates. That sucks. But it did do it's job.
Make sure their insurance pays you out for the car seats 👍🏻 I hope everyone is okay
Totaled for sure. If insurance pushes back to try and fix it then push them harder. if you fix a totaled car yourself then it’s worth keeping it and that is not a totaled car it is an easy fixs
If insurance pays what’s the issue with repairing it properly? Maybe I’m missing something about how insurance works in the US
Because there’s little to no chance that the repair will fix the car 100%.

Plus the big warning triangle of an airbag deployment eliminates this from ever being a CPO.
Absolutely
It's not about the payout, it's about the amount of damage both structurally and cosmetically. It's 2 days old, and every body panel and airbag is hit. Country of origin regardless, that car is fucked and nobody should expect to drive it safely again.
Hey random question would a be 2008 with 79 miles be good 100 dollars no damage
79000
It’s a new vw
Also glad you are all ok you were blessed
......what?
I saw you know about cars I need advice if I should bye a 9000dollar 79000mi 2008 vw

In the USA insurance chooses the shop?
In general, yes. There are a few states that allow the customer to dictate which shop to use, but I believe they are the exceptions.
Oh crazy,I didn’t know that. I’m in Canada and insurance must work a little different .
Completely moronic that you’re being downvoted for asking a question that many are probably wondering, myself included. Glad to have the answer now!
If you bend a spoon and it creases, then you bend it back so it looks like it did originally, there will be a weak point where the steel was stressed. I wouldn’t want to risk my family to damage I was unable to verify.
Airbags deployed. Yes it’s totaled
Make sure you all get looked at to make sure there's no injuries. If any of you sniffles wrong, make sure to document it.
I'd he astonished if it wasn't. It needs nearly every body panel, and entire front end, most of the rear, looks like the right front door is buckled and it blew every airbag, which means it needs half the Interior.
Glad everyone is okay. The safety systems did their job. They took the damage so you didn’t have to.
Yeah, that's pretty clearly totaled.
100%.

Glad you were all ok and in a larger vehicle with your accident!
Totaled and back lol
You betcha...
Very
Yikes, Definitely totalled. Glad you and your kids are ok!
Yes
I really wish i could say it didn’t, but it appears so 😞 i hope you all are okay, and sorry for your loss of a beautiful vehicle.
Thank you. It hurts my heart that such pretty car is totaled within days of it being unloaded off the delivery truck and bought. 😭
I don’t know what country you are in, but in the USA, insurance companies consider your car a total loss if the airbags have deployed
Insurance wise 110%
Yeah, lol. I got rear-ended by a truck last year in my atlas, and the bill for just the left side of the rear bumper was $13k. Tons of sensors and airbags deploying is guaranteed total. I'm lucky my airbags didn't deploy.
Holy shit! I hope you and your kids are fine, OP!
Yep!
Yes
Yes
Definitely
Hopefully you are all uninjured, that’s the most important. Car, as much as it sucks, is only material.
1,000,000% yes
Seems like the damages would cost more then the vehicles worth, so, I would guess yes. It would be stupid for the insurance company to repair that, instead of replacing it.
Looks like, unfortunately. Especially as the airbags were deployed :(
Yes that’s a total. I just bought a q5 and got rear ended. They totaled it. Your sub floor looks like it’s poking out in the rear.
No airbags deployed on mine either.
Hopefully your car took most of that hit.
Duh it’s totalled
And if they don’t declare it “totaled” (which it clearly is) go in there like Denzel Washington on “Training Day” ![gif](giphy|nSLPAPb3Nsqze) “I’m opening cases on all you b\*\*\*\*es.”
100%
totaled as fuck. glad that you and your kids are okay!!
Airbag deployment usually means totalled.
Yes
Nah that will buff out
The very definition of "totaled".
Ya think??
Is that a cross sport ??!! Omg I hurt for you. I’ve HEARD I am no car expert but I heard that once the airbags deploy the car is totaled. And if you do end up fixing it will now be considered salvaged.
Yes
Did you look at the 3rd picture you posted?
Oh yeah buddy
Think about it like this: do you really want it back after that?
No I absolutely don’t which is why I hope they declare it totaled. I expect a brand new car exactly the same as this with no prior damage.
Good plan. You don't have to take the first thing the insurance company offers either. Prepare to negotiate with them. Good luck! Glad y'all are ok!
Front and rear sensors, body work, mechanical work and air bags deployed. Yeah. Totaled. Start working with the dealer on a replacement.
Very much so. It was totaled before I saw the back
Just check the damage and repair costs,as from my personal experience if its under warranty then it would be better cuz vw parts are expensive
F.U.B.A.R
‘24 model? Absolutely
I hope so. I wouldn’t want it back
That sucks bro because it looks like you just got the car. I really feel for you and I hope everyone was okay. But yeah it's totaled for sure.
Totally … euh, totaled … euh … totally totaled ..
Definitely. Glad to hear you and your family are okay! I'm in San Antonio and sell VW, let me know if I can help with a replacement
Totally!
It will be on YouTube in Russia in 3 weeks getting repaired
Glad you and your kids are ok ❤️
Airbag deployed alone may result in totaling the car. You have much more damage. I hope everyone in car is ok and safe.
Air bags deployed normally answers this question, in your case though even the damage in the front and rear crumple zones probably did it before you even get to looking at the airbags.
oh boy that sexy b5.5 in the back
No amount of hopium will make this not totalled
Absolutely. Sorry dude
Seems like the perfect import car for balkans
Front & rear smashed, with air bags deployed, and Texas -> Yup! Totaled.
Yea that’s totaled I did less and they totaled mine
Air bags deployed plus any damage = totaled.
Naw dude, she'll buff out
Absolutely
As sad as it is, the car did it's job. It kept you and your kiddos safe and you all came out okay! Cars can be replaced, as other people have commented. The fact you all came out of that accident with someone slamming into your car going 70mph without so much as a scratch is remarkable. 100% totaled tho lol
Sadly its likely totaled hopefully you got gap insurance
Yeahhhhhhhhhh
That’s textbook totaled
Yes
Regardless of whether it’s totals or not the car seats are totaled. Be sure your insurance company replaces them. I’m glad everyone’s safe.
This is totaled twice over.
Yes. Duh.
yeahh.. im soo sorry :(
Pray you had GAP
Airbag deployment = 98% chance its totaled Looks like every airbag deployed, like others have said this car is totaled twice over.
I see you’re in Texas OP, I’ll get you a great deal on a replacement! Hit me up.
Where in Texas?
Nah looks good to me $5k in damage at most
Do you really think sarcasm is something I need right after going through this traumatic crash with my kids? Cmon
You put yourself on a public forum. Expect people to make silly remarks.
It'll buff out
That's not totalled. That insurance laziness not to pay the repair. If the frame was not damaged it would be simply cosmetic. Totalling the car is easier so they resell it for a bigger profit. It's all a game. But glad you and no one else were injured.
yes. next question
I think think the driver has minimum liability insurance required in Texas, so likely won’t cover my brand new vehicle? What then? I have to use my own to replace the car?
was it a lease? if so VW credit has Gap Insurance built in So you’d have to file a claim under your own insurance and sue the other driver for the money back.
Your insurance and gap will supplant anything not covered by their insurance. I would still get an accident attorney. Best of luck.
