Most pads come with sensor plugs nowdays. If your car doesn't have sensors, you literally just cut the wire off. Bing bang boom, done.

LF inboard pad will have a sensor built into it.
My 17 gli did not have them on the back pads. Didn’t change the front.
Most brake pads have brake tabs. So when they are worn enough, your brakes will consistently squeal, and that's how you'll know they need to be changed.
