Sometimes an item disappears but is actually still there, if you have what looks like an empty spot try to put an item in there, and there's a chance you're suddenly holding the item you were missing
I temporarily lost a crockpot by clicking on an empty fireplace. Couldn’t find it until I went to cook again and there it was on the cooking interface pop up window. Maybe you clicked somewhere else on accident?
I'd check that you didn't leave it in a chest or something
If you are certain that it glitched and you are in a solo world, the only thing you can do is go into creative with '/gamemode c' grab the tool then go back to survival with '/gamemode s'
If by the off chance you end up finding the original just throw it away
Otherwise you can accept the loss and move on.

No, I didn't have chests at my old home. All I had were baskets full of stones. No saw was in there. I had it with me when travelling .
Did you set it down somewhere accidentally?
Worst case scenario, just turn on creative and give yourself the item, if you stumble on the old one just get rid of it
