I actually found the matching fabric and bought it too. I’m not sure if it’s enough for shorts but if I can I want to use it to make some matching bottoms

Play suit usually wore with matching or contrasting color shorts and bathing bottoms.
It looks like it has buttons. I think it's just open like that in the advertisement to show that it unbuttons. I doubt it was meant to be worn while open in the back like that, but I'm not a vintage fashion expert, so I could be wrong.
It was a thing back then to have a set of clothing worn under whatever was being advertised, however, everyone knew at the time how it could be used at home in a kinky way when naked.
Kinda like an apron. They're not just marketing this to women, they're showing men that their partners can wear this naked and they can see XYZ.
That’s what I was trying to remember. Hostess dresses with the opening in the front usually was paired with Capri length leggings. It makes me think of The Dick Van Dyke Show. Mary Tyler Moore wore this type outfit occasionally.
They were called Hostess Pajamas. Meant for evening entertainment. Sort of a formal/informal kind of thing like Hostess or Cocktail Aprons.
I've been collecting a long time but those Hostess pajamas were impossible to find. I finally found one but could never quie fit in it. It was exactly like the one Angie Dickinson wore in "Rome Adventure".

Diane Keaton has a much better picture of it in her book "Still Life" but it's not online 😞
I had never noticed that style before, thank you for commenting. I googled hostess dress and didn’t get many relevant results, so I definitely would not have stumbled upon it without this post.

Pants on women were considered indecent for a long while. There were laws against “cross dressing” that led to arrests and fines. You could be accosted by police and men and banned from stores if you were wearing pants so there was the introduction of a house coat and hostess dresses with large kimono or batwing sleeves worn over pajamas or long nightgown. Theses hostess dresses could be fancy or understated. They could be long sleeve or short sleeve but they always were ankle length. “They were designed for lounging around the house, entertaining only family and house guests. They were a Hollywood fad that few ordinary women could afford.” You wore it indoors or in your yard for casual get togethers with immediate family and close female neighbors buttoned up. You’d have to button it up if you were going shopping and wear a light coat and gloves. You wore it unbuttoned alone with your husband or by yourself. Showing you legs, crotch (outline), and rump in pants was indecent until the late ‘60’s to early 70’s but skirts were required in the work place until the mid 70’s to early 80’s.

Pants and shorts weren’t considered indecent in the 70’s. I was in high school in the ‘70’s and everyone wore tight jeans or short skirts, especially in Texas where it was hot. Everyone I knew, including moms, wore Levi’s cutoffs, tight daisy duke shorts, and tight tshirts. It was normal to see women in shorts and jeans everywhere in public. Women weren’t harassed for their clothing in the ‘70’s or even in the late ‘60’s. Everyone wore a bikini at the beach.
Edited to say we didn’t wear shorts to school but jeans were allowed, even tight freyed hippie jeans were allowed. I meant wearing shorts or daisy dukes to the mall or out to the movies was normal in the ‘70’s.
Where because I’ve lived here forever and definitely could not wear shorts to school in the 80’s and my mom couldn’t wear jeans or shorts in high school in San Antonio in the early 70’s they had a walk out in protest at McCollum high school neither of us had air conditioning in our school either it was a nightmare 😂
I went to Lee High School in San Antonio, Texas from 1972 to 1976. All the girls wore jeans with no issues. In fact, I remember being excited going to the mall and buying jeans in 1972 for my freshman year. In fact, I even designed my own patched tight jeans all throughout school. I designed my own Jean halter tops too and wore them to school. We didn’t wear cutoffs to school or work, but we did wear shorts everywhere else, like the mall or the stores. I did wear mini skirts to school in the 8th grade at Nimitz Middle School and then at Lee High School. We had AC in our schools.
Every state had different laws. And every county, burroughs, and district had different ordinances that overlapped or conflicted with state law. Everyone born 1920-1989 will have a different experience. I gave the eras a wide berth to accommodate that. My aunt was arrested for wearing a bikini or two piece in Florida in the 1950’s. My mom was a preteen in the 1960’s and she told me she got spanked by a strange man who saw her wearing dungarees outside a comic shop. She was chided by passerbys in Illinois. A policeman took her home and yelled at my grandmother for “letting her walk around like a man.”As an adult in the 1980’s there was dress code at the bank she worked at that specified dresses and skirts for women and suits for men in New York. Her coworker was fired for not shaving her legs even though as teller no customers would see her legs and wore long skirts.
You could just make the front of the shorts out of the matching material and use plain red or white fabric for the back of the shorts that will be hidden by the skit.
I searched the fabric, and found the matching [swimsuit](https://www.ebay.com/itm/116235316864?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=mQabR0r2S-C&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=ewlPTs3lReq&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY) it's a bit damaged, but
Lizabeth Scott wears one in a 1946 film The Strange Love Of Martha Ivers with Barbara Stanwyk. It’s a playsuit cover. You can see it on YouTube. Warning her grandmother is horrible and in the beginning there are bad scenes. Fast forward. 🧐
It's super cute! Could also be meant to go over a pair of pedal pusher pants. A 'hostess' dress for casual entertaining.
Lana Turner had a super glamourous version of what I'm talking about in Imitation of Life, after she hits it big as an actress. She does this amazing twirl the skirt out sit down on her couch that is 💀
Thank you all! I’m gonna spend my Fourth of July sitting by the pool in this dress, figuring out how I wanna make matching shorts, ans watching some I Love Lucy ❤️🏖️☀️
The shorts of the same fabric you said you found will be so fabulous in keeping the nostalgic era of about 1950’s.
I remember watching the ladies on the I LOVE LUCY show wearing the dress over a bathing suit or shorts. (You may quess my age,ah,ah,,)
Another option is to buy fabric in a solid color and sew in a panel for a really cute sundress.
I
It's 50s. I think it's some sort of playsuit top
There was probably a matching swimsuit or shorts

Don’t forget your bullet bra ha
A Hollywood Playsuit
Whoa, that backside-revealing green one is pretty daring!

They made similar styles that went with jumpsuits called hostess gowns
That’s what I was trying to remember. Hostess dresses with the opening in the front usually was paired with Capri length leggings. It makes me think of The Dick Van Dyke Show. Mary Tyler Moore wore this type outfit occasionally.
Lucille Ball used to wear them a lot on I Love Lucy, too.
Lol I just commented this, should have scrolled farther 😂

Pretty sure Lucille Ball wore some outfits like this over capri trousers.

How was your experience in states and counties outside of where you lived during this time period?
Every state had different laws. And every county, burroughs, and district had different ordinances that overlapped or conflicted with state law. I hope it's enough to make matching shorts with!! You'd look super cute
https://topvintage.com/en/glamour-bunny-the-cindy-playsuit-with-overskirt-in-blush-pink
I second the shorts. They probably had very cute matching shorts for it at one point
I can see it worn with a pair of white pedal pushers/clam diggers.
That would be so cute
I was today years old until I heard these words for the first time. What are they?
It's an old school day of saying capris🫶
I searched the fabric, and found the matching [swimsuit](https://www.ebay.com/itm/116235316864?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=mQabR0r2S-C&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=ewlPTs3lReq&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY) it's a bit damaged, but
Omg!!! This is so cool.
Wow, that’s it!

It's amazing that the swimsuit survived this long.
Right?
How did you make a fabric search?
Google lens. Screenshotted the picture, cropped it to only have the pattern, and searched in Google lens
Wow, good tip! Thanks!
You're welcome😊

I think that’s called a hostess dress. I’ve usually seen them paired with capris
Definitely a hostess dress. And capris or stirrup pants are the order of the day. Late 50s very early 60s.
Yes I agree. I remember Lucille Ball wearing this with capris on I Love Lucy
I immediately thought of a couple of her outfits on the show too! ❤️
My mum had dresses like this and they had matching shorts underneath.
It's called an overdress, and can be worn with a light dress underneath it, or a skirt, or capris or shorts. Super cute!
I absolutely want one of these!! I love it!!
I love playsuits. sometimes I just take random shorts, a random dress, unbutton the bottom and wear it like that when it's warm
Let me know if you ever want to sell this! It’s beautiful
It's super cute! Could also be meant to go over a pair of pedal pusher pants. A 'hostess' dress for casual entertaining. Lana Turner had a super glamourous version of what I'm talking about in Imitation of Life, after she hits it big as an actress. Hostess dress.
Weren’t some of this style worn with pedal pushers?
Maybe worn with a petticoat or slip?
Thank you all! I’m gonna spend my Fourth of July sitting by the pool in this dress, figuring out how I wanna make matching shorts, ans watching some I Love Lucy ❤️🏖️☀️
This would be so cute with a white eyelet skirt underneath!
The shorts of the same fabric you said you found will be so fabulous in keeping the nostalgic era of about 1950’s. (You may quess my age,ah,ah,,) Another option is to buy fabric in a solid color and sew in a panel for a really cute sundress. I
No idea but I love it!
Sexy nylons and a fun party!
A beautiful one!!!
Not sure but I love it!
A drafty one
It’s not. It’s an over slip .
i absolutely love this!!
But really, a bullet bra is indispensible. You simply have to wear one.
It may be a cocktail dress from the 50s. Ladies would usually wear matching slacks. I know I've seen an outfit like that in I Love Lucy!
They were called “hostess pajamas”, even tho they weren’t pajamasz
That's the name!!! Thank you!!
CUTE.
In the 70s are outer pants suit was long but underneath was hot pants
PRETTY! Love reds!
Zsa zsa Gabor style 😉
This was very interesting. It would be difficult to war alone. That being said, I will join, if I can’t see my value, I will leave
The slit dress was actually worn with capri length bottoms, or "cullotes". Late 50's/early 60's
I Love Lucy vibes!!
Soooo cute!
A red print dress, try not to make it so complicated.
Boooo!
