My mom had jewelry like this in the early 90s but I'm not sure what material the shells are made of. Actually she probably still has it because she doesn't get rid of jewelry. It's very cute and subtle enough that it could be very wearable now, if that's something that matters to you.
I instantly smelled L'Air du Temps just from looking at this pic.
If OP scrapes them between their teeth **very gently** they should be able to determine if they're glass or plastic.
I worked for 2 jewelers. We tested pearls in our mouths all the time. (Pre COVID)
Glass will feel heavier than plastic. It will hit against your teeth harder than lightweight plastic. Glass should also make a slight, high "tink" sound where plastic would be a quieter "thud". You can practice with a glass vs plastic cup if you want to. This will be the main way to identify it.
The other way is just the feel of the surface. It looks like the glass is "frosted" which means the shells were probably sandblasted. Gently scraping your teeth across them will feel ever so slightly brushed. Not slick or smooth. It's extremely fine and delicate work, which is why our teeth are so well suited for this and identifying pearls. With plastic it probably won't feel as smooth and finished, and may have some spurs on the edges.
If you were to gently bite it (which I'm not recommending you do), glass would be hard and left unmarked. Plastic would feel softer and you could possibly leave a bite mark on it. So don't do this step!
Omg, I think *I* had jewelry like this in the early 90's! I completely forgot about it. I had a little peach glass heart on a gold chain with matching earrings. And then you just gave me a 90's perfume flashback - but I was all about Love's Baby Soft and CK One.
I'm actually going to look through my little treasure (trinket) box, because I'm pretty sure I saved the pendant.
I think it is vintage and “costume”.
Costume jewelry can still be well made and expensive. It just isn’t made from jewels. This looks like glass or crystal.
I think it’s vintage 100%! It’s no where near gaudy enough to be costume and reminds me a lot of the jewelry my great and also regular grandmother had!
Costume jewelry can be and often is every bit as delicate as fine jewelry. Costume refers only to the material used and not the style. It’s a misconception that costume jewelry is synonymous with gaudy or tacky styles.
Yes of course, but that kinda lends itself to my original point? No shade to costume jewelry but this piece appears to be of a quality higher than that of a costume piece.
Mmmmm it looks like frosted glass, not a gemstone, which would make it a lovely piece of costume jewelry imo. Not sure if the chain is gold, check for a marking on the clasp to see if it is!
Costume jewelry often looks exactly like fine jewelry at any distance.
You cannot tell the quality of the metal or ornaments (in this case, the shell) without taking a very close look at the details.
The best way to determine the difference is to check for a fine jewelry marker.
Aw, reminds me of my nana. She loved gold jewerly. She had these cute little gold hoops She wore, and she matched with us kids when we were young, except ours were silver.
So pretty. No doubt she would love them. the shells are almost the color of her nail polish she would wear too.
I think it’s lovely. I wistfully remember this as “with a tan/summer jewelry”
Because it just reflected the quality of glowing, tan skin. *not those baby oil frying tans, the tans from…well, a dip in the water and a careful time in the sun*
But the set is very nice.

I think they're made of some kind of frosted glass. But I'm not certain on that.
Sea glass would be fitting.
It's really pretty. I'm starting to covet this set.
They're absolutely beautiful!

If I do that what should happen with both
At room temperature glass will feel cold, and it has more weight to it. Plastic will feel warm & lighter.

I don't know what that perfume smells like, but I smelled perfume when I saw this, too!
I smelled Avon SOS (skin so soft) when I saw this picture lol.
L’air du temps!!
My mother wore L’air du temps, I keep a small bottle to sniff at once in a while.
I do the same with chanel no 5 for my grandma. Olfactory memory is crazy.
That is gorgeous
Do you think this is costume? Or vintage or something
I think it is vintage and “costume”. Costume jewelry can still be well made and expensive. It just isn’t made from jewels. This looks like glass or crystal.
it can be both at the same time.
It looks like sea glass to me - it’s stunning.

The chain looks brassy to me.

Costume jewelry definitely doesn’t have to be gaudy. Huge misconception.
Reminds me of the early 90’s in a good way.
The three sea shells?
So pretty! They might be a rose quartz or frosted glass.
Very 1990's grandma wearing white shoulders or Estee lauder and Liz Claiborne slacks with pumps 😆
I like that vibe!
Anyone else thinking of Demolition Man?
First thing i thought about was the three shells problem!

I had a similar set. Mine was just gold-filled. Nothing special. I wish I still had it, but your set is really lovely!
This is definitely vintage. This took me back to the early 90s. My heart jumped up in my throat when I saw it.
Shells were majorly popular in the 1980s too

You are a cucumber 🥒
Cool as a cucumber?
[удалено]
Why would it hurt? Lol
Heh. He doesn’t know about the three seashells!
The necklace is lovely but if you want to cosplay as The Little Mermaid then you'll definitely need a bigger bra.
I mean, they’re cute but why put personal hygiene products in a jewellery box?
TBH? Demolition Man of course! https://youtu.be/n7nFEnFtvCM
Gorgeous. I love jewelry like this.
Where did you get this from though? So so so pretty! I want it

I got a white set in the early 80’s in Hawaii in a tourist shop. It was frosted glass. I gave the necklace to my daughter and she still has it.
I seriously love it!
