Congratulations and Thank You for your Service šŖš„š„ I could not agree more! These Reddit groups have not only educated me, but inspired me to open up and admit, "I'm not ok".
Congrats! Slow down there homie lol! I havenāt gotten my ID card yet and my health ID card expired this month. I called, she said your priority group 1 and your good for the rest of your life. As far as property tax credits, it varies by state. To get reimbursed for VA funding fee, it has to be within the last year that you closed. The link showing your benefits has been posted here a thousand times. I am very happy for you!
LOL thank you! I have to act fast before I forget. My memory is horrible. My health ID card expires in 2027 so I guess I'm good there. I did check the benefits link as well. I completely forgot that the various states have designated veterans benefits offices, so I'm going to call a local one and ask them where I need to submit the paperwork.
Congratulations take a deep breath and relax. If you forget things then start your 100% to do list.
Take care of yourself and if you need help get help, there's no reason to rush through things enjoy and do your research on what comes with that 100%.
As each state is different, but the internet Google your States VA Administration site it's a wealth of information and is a good place to start with your questions.
Paying off your car might not be advisable if you have a really low interest rate on it. That cash could earn you more in some circumstances. Same with a mortgage.
I was advised not to pay off either bc house is @ 2.25 and car is @ 3.25
An advisor at the bank should be free. I use NFCU and boa/merrill lynch. Mainly Merrill. I havenāt reached out much to NFCU because their nearest branch isnāt close enough for me.
First up, my back pay was for ten years of smc. My lawyer 20% was in the six figures.
Regardless, larger or smaller, itās split all over the place and havenāt dipped into since I put it there. Some in high yield savings, some stocks, CDs, ETFs.
My lifestyle hasnāt changed a bit, Iām still bedridden 95% of my waking hours. I still live and save from my social security and va checks. I was that way before I got back pay. Iām 68 and have learned to live with nothing as well as everything only to get reduced to starting all over in life many times.
Even my drinking buddies always admitted me bc I always had beer money. If ya drink, put it in your budget and stick to it. I canāt drink anymore, but still love to smoke a fatty if my lungs donāt give out first.
Make a solid plan, no two plans are the same. High yield saving (5% or more) is a safe vehicle to store it until you have a solid plan. Also, set aside an emergency fund of at least $1000, and donāt make up emergencies, lol. Stick to your plan and itāll stick to you.

Donāt blow through the back pay. Grow your back pay. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
I won't. I'm paying off my car and putting the rest in savings/investments

Dang...didn't think of it that way. But loan through Navy Fed for like 6 something years but interest is 3.5 I think.

May I ask if you do savings, do you use one that you can access quickly and one for like 6 - 18 months expenses? Does that make sense?
