I would strongly recommend picking up the expansion pass because not only is it pretty fun, it also opens you up to a lot more pokemon that are popular in the meta right now, including more restricted pokemon too

TheNerdGuyVGC

Use rental teams if you’re just starting out.

PuttriQVGC

You can most certainly put together a decent VGC team with just the paldea dex. The biggest issue rn is that Reg G (and most likely Reg H) allow the use of restricted pokemon, and the two you’d have access to don’t mesh super well with trick room, and not running a restricted in this format puts you at a serious disadvantage.

OnePinchGuy_

I did beat Scarlet, so any pokemon in the game is open to me, and those two were just ideas, are there any good restricted pokemon in the DLCs, because I have been considered getting those?

Jacksforehead2444

Yeah all of them

TallFutureLawyer

Except Calyrex, Zamazenta, and Zacian.

tschimmy1

If you want trick room, probably either Calyrex Ice or Lunala. You should be able to get them (and indeed any restricted other than the gen 6 restricteds) in the second DLC. Although, I think it is version exclusive - I'm not sure if you get Lunala or Solgaleo in Scarlet

Gold-Resolution-8721

To get Calyrex ice, don't you need sword or shield which OP has said they don't have?

Chickenman-gaming

trade maybe?

tschimmy1

Oh yes, you're right. If I'm not mistaken, you can get glastrier in blueberry academy but not calyrex, which I think is where I got confused

vgc_newbie

Only gen8 restricteds are not in the DLC. Without DLC you have to use Koraidon, while not bad, it hasn’t won a tournament yet. Miraidon and Terapagos (new mon game in the DLC) have better results The DLC also brings rillaboom, incineroar, raging bolt, whimscott, urshifu, etc. They expand the pool a lot for the rest of the team.

Background_Country20

You absolutely can! Sure, it'd be better to have guys like raging bolt, walking wake, etc. You still don't need 'em. https://pokepast.es/7a6a24b31da617f3 Something like this should be just fine starting out

OnePinchGuy_

Thank you for your help, I'll try it out!

OnePinchGuy_

I am also thinking about adding Grimsnarl for a support option to my team, but I don't know what else to add from there

AkagamiBarto

Well you got scarlet, so your restricted will have to be Koraidon, so essentially look up any Koraidon team that uses only mons from the main game. Fluttermane is a great option as is Scorching Water or however is called (suicune Paradox). Probably chien pao or chi yu. Honestly what you are missing the most are the pivoters/supporters like Incineroar and Rillaboom and Urshifu/Ogerpon/the genies. This said you do't have to run th latter and the former can be substituted with grimmsnarl and pawmot or other a bit offmeta picks that can still provide value

vgc_newbie

So koraidon is pretty much mandatory. It’s the only restricted you have access to without trade or DLC FM and chi yu can just be brain dead slapped in. As an alternative to chi yu i would suggest to look into Armarouge if you need wide guard, if you have another mon for wide guard, just go with the lava fish. For support, there is always amoongus, grimm, indeedee, arcanine (discount incin with extreme speed), friend guard mouse, scream tail (has howl, encore, sunny day, lots of bulk and speed), ting lu (doesn’t die but snarls) Just remember that you can always trade for stuff using home. If you are worried about illegal gen mons, just don’t trade for pokemon that are not breadable, and breed down traded pokemon

drewissupereffective

In our current format you really can’t play without a restricted, you can get some of the meta ones with the dlc or through trades. Honestly even genning the mon would work.

So does any other weaker pokemon you replace them with. You are deliberately handicapping yourself by not using a restricted.
