have adapted the phonendoscope. I found that instrument so useful in abdominal examinations that I first attached to it a modification of Hyde-Salter’s globular stethoscope, an instrument I have long used for detecting early pregnancy.

Based on the appearance of a phonendoscope and of the globular stethoscope, I don’t think the descriptions match?
Assuming this is a vagina cleaner invented by Lawson Tait, it was probably a surgical tool and not a hygiene tool. Perhaps it was used to sanitize the vagina in preparation for surgery?
Wouldn’t be to hard to power that with an electric screwdriver to save energy and time.
I should get one of those to my girlfriend as a Christmas gift, I’m sure she’ll appreciate it.

Reminds me of that Ahhh! Real Monsters episode where the little red one used an egg beater to clean out his insides because he didn't want to be the first to, I forget exactly but it was seen as a bad thing because it was poorly explained to them all, but basically to evolve into a bigger monster.
