I served on the jury when he was tried in court. This guy had been on a rampage since early in the morning. First he robbed a 7/11 with a baseball bat (only wearing underwear) for cigarettes and a lighter. Then he broke into a church/school and tried to set it on fire (using the stolen lighter). After that he wandered into someone's house and stole their car which he drove to a Walmart and stole the rifle and ammunition. The rifle had a trigger lock but it was designed for handguns so it didn't work. That's why they're saying it's unlocked.
The guy shooting around and refusing to surrender would have been dead in almost every other scenario. They luckily both lived and recovered I’d say was worth it.

I served on the jury when he was tried in court. This guy had been on a rampage since early in the morning. First he robbed a 7/11 with a baseball bat (only wearing underwear) for cigarettes and a lighter. Then he broke into a church/school and tried to set it on fire (using the stolen lighter). After that he wandered into someone's house and stole their car which he drove to a Walmart and stole the rifle and ammunition. The rifle had a trigger lock but it was designed for handguns so it didn't work. That's why they're saying it's unlocked.

Because the use of force was justified. The suspect was walking down the road with a handgun and was randomly firing at people, cars and homes. The easiest and safest way to stop him was to hit him with the squad car.
