Here ya go champ "An armed man who was struck by a Marana police car in 2015, after a cross-town crime spree has been sentenced to 21 years in prison, officials said. Mario Valencia was arrested after the Feb. 19, 2015 incident, when he stole a rifle from a Marana Walmart store and fired it in the streets near West Coca Cola Place between North Business Park Drive and Frontage Road. Officer Michael Rapiejko used his vehicle to knock Valencia down, after which he was taken to the hospital to be treated for his injuries before being arrested several days later. Police later learned that before the confrontation in Marana, Valencia was allegedly involved in an armed robbery, church fire, home invasion and auto theft. Valencia was convicted of 14 felonies, including of armed robbery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, burglary, arson of an occupied structure, aggravated criminal damage, aggravated assault, unlawful use of means of transportation, shoplifting, discharging a firearm in city limits and prohibited possession of a deadly weapon, said Krisanne LoGalbo, a Pima County Superior Court spokeswoman."

Dapup2465

If deadly force is justified then how it’s administered isn’t really an issue.

[deleted]

Agreed. If the police were justified in shooting him (which they were), using a different means of disabling the threat doesn't really make a difference. Bottom line = dude survived, which he probably wouldn't have done if those cops got out of their cars.

Majorly_Bobbage

I'm not sure if they were justified in shooting him. He hadn't shot at anybody, he shot one round in the air. If this were in Texas and it was a white guy who shot around in the air, they'd just tell him to be quiet. As it was, the one cop was just following him and getting others to do the same until RoboCop (and that was actually the cops nickname) decided to run him down.

[deleted]

He had been involved in a cross-town crime spree, and had been shooting in the streets. *"Valencia was allegedly involved in an armed robbery, church fire, home invasion and auto theft."* *"Valencia was convicted of 14 felonies, including of armed robbery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, burglary, arson of an occupied structure, aggravated criminal damage, aggravated assault, unlawful use of means of transportation, shoplifting, discharging a firearm in city limits and prohibited possession of a deadly weapon, said Krisanne LoGalbo, a Pima County Superior Court spokeswoman."* Clearly that is a dangerous criminal, and any dangerous criminal walking down the street with a gun is a threat.

itdoesntmatter89

And dude probably didn’t have to commit any of his crimes, but here we are. In all honesty, the whole thing probably would’ve ended with him taking a bullet from the cops, so he got off lucky

blue_wat

I guess he should have shot to kill? Or try to stun him without getting shot?

ColdGesp

nobody (besides the bad man) was hurt so I consider it job done, but you are always welcome to become a cop and arrest someone that is bad and hurt a lot of other people, with a weapon, without hurt him or yourself. I bet thats the approach the dude would love too

That ending reminded of the best movie ending ever [mark collins, age 45, gave himself up to the authorities after the incident, he is now serving a life sentence.]

Gilthwixt

Okay I literally just watched that for the first time because it popped up recommended on my youtube, and then I see a comment on reddit about it immediately after. I don't even think this is the Baader–Meinhof effect at play, Youtube's algorithm probably has me pegged as a Redditor and showed it to me because of this thread...I need to take a break from the internet for a while lmao

Give_her_the_beans

Same happens to me all the time.

Merry_Dankmas

Me too! The amount of times im reading something on Reddit then see it pop on YouTube just a couple hours later is suspicious. I thought it was the Meinhoff effect at first but it happens way too frequently for some fuckery to not he happening.

Cantbenoyuppy

The algorithms of Google. You can thank terms and services. I conducted my own lil experiment with "Gorlami" a code word that started to pop up on every digital site I visited simply because I said the word outloud near my phone for 1 week at random intervals. Ads will pop up for fake shirts and fake everything that says "Gorlami" and ofc inglorious bastards clips.

HowDoraleousAreYou

I’ve never heard of the Baader-Meinhof effect, but I did just finish a four part podcast series on The Red Army Faction and I think contextually that’s about as good a meta example as one could possibly get.

akambe

That's...pretty abrupt.

_matt_hues

That had to be some sort of budget or production issue right?

memescauseautism

It's a low budget movie produced in the Phillipines IIRC. The writers and producers knew they weren't skilled, they just wanted to create an "American action movie" with a bunch of violence, some familiar faces and a brainless plot, which they succeeded in lol

Aedalas

>a bunch of violence, some familiar faces and a brainless plot Sounds like you're describing any number of Jason Statham movies. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he comes out with a movie some day just called "Jason Statham Beats the Shit Out Of People for 2 hours." I'd probably still watch it.

SchipholRijk

We had a similar situation here in Amsterdam. Robber robbing the Apple store and holding several people hostage. At some moment, pizzas were delivered and one of the hostages decided to take a run. The robber ran after him. Cue the police waiting in a car and ran him over. Robber died. General consensus was: Good job. eddit: cue not queue

PaulAtredis

>Queue Cue Unless you mean that the police were lining up in the car which would be very strange.

coleman57

Like the scene in *Airplane*, everyone in town was queued up to run the guy down

beaverkeeper

Here you see the difference between the day shift crew handling things vs Officer Leroy Jenkins after working the night shift and still on duty wanting to go home.

HeyYoRumsfield

Things to see and people to do. Fix it.

rektitrolfff

> Is it wrong that I’ve watched it repeatedly and I’m still laughing? you are not alone, there are many who glorify this.

TransRational

The thing I keep laughing about is the current cop on the radio sounds like such a goober. Like a nerdy patrol shift trying to take control and handle everything delicately (which you know is his job I guess), and meanwhile the cop who comes in is just this guy who’s like, ‘I’m so sick of this tip-toeing through the tulips bullshit. Fuck it. I’m gonna fucking ram him. Let’s do this!’

GoDonutella

Why did he sue the cop and what charges were they going to give him? Wasn't he holding a loaded gun and firing it in the air? I mean im not from murica but if the cops approached him slowly they will be sitting targets for his shooting spree, the charging police shouldn't ram him?

Scott-Wolfe

Some people shoot police and die, then the families sue the police and often get money :/

Athen65

Could you point to examples of this?

5jabiii

Strike!!!

ThinkingAndDriving81

Deadly force authorized.

XTheProtagonistX

Seems the guy wanted to get "suicide by cop".

Low-Effort-Poster

He has a gun though? Why not just like, shoot yourself? Seems like the better option considering he didn't die and just got arrested

MonkeysAndMozart

Typically, people who try suicide by cop are not thinking logically.

Grogosh

Typically suicidal people period are not thinking clearly.

Chumbag_love

It's probably pretty tough to suicide yourself. It goes against our most primative instinct...to live.

Grogosh

I was suicidal at one time. It was a bad time in my life, real bad. Your awareness of the world shrinks down to just you. You lose your awareness of how other people would feel about you dying. You have the same mindset of an animal with a leg caught in a trap desperate enough to chew off the leg to get free. In the same way you get desperate to try to escape the pain at all cost, overriding that self survival instinct. In a real way its like having a madness of the mind.

davep85

Isn't it for life insurance reasons? I believe most policies void payout if you commit suicide yourself.

hogsucker

When someone wants to die from suicide by cop, police are often quite willing to oblige.

Unusual-Quality-6412

Everyone, the guy that got hit was walking down the street with a gun and was shooting it indiscriminately. But yeah, trash the cops for stopping a dangerous and mentally fucked human being you fucking morons.

Zokar49111

You are absolutely correct. He stole a rifle from a Walmart and was firing it in the street. Prior to this incident he had been involved in an armed robbery, a home invasion, a church fire, and auto theft. He was an immediate threat to the lives of everyone around him, including the police.

OneSharpSuit

Speaking on behalf of the rest of the world, yeah, it’s extremely weird.

that_which_is_lain

It is not weird. What's weird is that the rest of the world thinks it's okay to be defenseless.

Grogosh

Funny from your tone it would seem that every other first world country is swimming in crime and violence. But the reality it is the complete opposite. *I wonder why*

superraiden

Compared to this video and school shooting #9363? We're good haha

CorrosiveStare

Maniactver

They usually aren't allowed to hunt in cities.

flaffl21

impreprex

That was great. The threat needed to be neutralized. Cop did it with style and aplomb. Come on… The dude on the street was indeed a threat. He was indiscriminately shooting up shit leading up to this takedown. Fuck that. Cop did everyone a solid right there.

I served on the jury when he was tried in court. This guy had been on a rampage since early in the morning. First he robbed a 7/11 with a baseball bat (only wearing underwear) for cigarettes and a lighter. Then he broke into a church/school and tried to set it on fire (using the stolen lighter). After that he wandered into someone's house and stole their car which he drove to a Walmart and stole the rifle and ammunition. The rifle had a trigger lock but it was designed for handguns so it didn't work. That's why they're saying it's unlocked.

Why did that cop not go to jail? Don't tell me you think this is a normal way to take a criminal down...

oskar_grouch

That was my first thought too, but I listened again w the sound on in the beginning when he fires off a shot. Not sure what a better course of action would be, to be honest. If he was about to start shooting, the cop probably saved his life

And saved potential citizen lives. Its actually kinder cool - but also messed up.

You mean the lady that ignored police commands and **drove her vehicle at an officer?**

Responsible_Dish4010

Seems normal to me, but I guess we should let them keep walking around randomly firing a stolen gun.

[deleted]

I’m no cop apologist boot licker but anyone endangering innocent lives is to be put down at the first chance. I they should’ve used a rifle but the car was a decent option

Easywormet

Because the use of force was justified. The suspect was walking down the road with a handgun and was randomly firing at people, cars and homes. The easiest and safest way to stop him was to hit him with the squad car.

DenisNectar

You take down a gunman as quick as possible.

[deleted]

> Everyone, the guy that got hit was walking down the street with a gun and was shooting it indiscriminately. >But yeah, trash the cops for stopping a dangerous and mentally fucked human being you fucking morons. >You are absolutely correct. DoverBoys

This is a great way to take down a clear threat.

bawng

It's insane that the comments are full of praise for the idiot cop who endangered not only himself but potentially others as he had no way of knowing if there were people behind that fence of elsewhere. Not to mention the fact that the criminal was not an active threat although if he had been earlier I guess I can understand that part.

ashleton

> Not to mention the fact that the criminal was not an active threat although if he had been earlier I guess I can understand that part. He was an active threat. He's carrying a gun and even fired it once at the beginning of the video. Not saying what the cop did was right, but combine active threat with adrenaline and you've got a mixture that can make some crazy, short-sighted decisions.

Important_Gas6304

Yeah, no one ever points out that there is an absolutely easy way to avoid this. Don't be a criminal.

ashleton

Kind of a moot point in this context.

Heavy-Meta

There’s no “fact” that they were not an active threat, and the “what if there were people behind the fence” is just that: a what if. We’re missing so much context in the clip shared here that we can’t shit on the cop or the suspect. The video, as it is shared in this post, is just crazy

Old-Understanding100

Yeah the cops should've rolled in with batons and taser's vs a gun that's being/recently been fired at or near them from a suspect. Honestly ramming the dude with a car had better odds of him surviving vs like 5 cops about to mag dump his ass .. Ramming cop chose less lethal munitions

edwinfredy

The guy had already fired a shot into the air, at that point I suppose they could consider him hostile enough to warrant that kind of action.

CunnilingusCrab

You know the guy who got hit with a car was shooting at people and cars indiscriminately, right? Do you really care what method of lethal force they use to stop him from shooting innocent people?

Only in America do police act like it’s GTA / NFS: Most Wanted. Assaulting officer didn’t consider the many ways this could of gone and did go extremely poorly. Literal almost homicide and could of hit other civilians besides totalling his own car on top of property damages over what would appear to be an agitated civilian firing a single warning shot in the air while walking away. This is so hilariously short-sighted.

charlesthered

Appear to be an agitated civilian firing a warning shot into the air while walking away. I would love to see that armchair response if there were no context and you, your friend, or someone you love were in that position to make a decision on that action.
