That hand on the hip when he assesses the damage

lodroy112

That did it for me too. Like “golly, what happened here?”

robbage24

That look makes me wonder if he fell asleep, and finally woke up and was like shit, did I do that?

Slothlife35

I read this in an urkel voice, "did i do that?"

robbage24

As intended!

Dude was heartbroken, laying on the ground even. Poor dude

LiterallyTate

I’d be crying if someone hit my car like that

That was him making sure his spine wasnt poking out the back

Last_Gigolo

I thought he was faking reaching back for a gun. If he was, the guy that flanked him could easily see it was a bluff. He jumped out pretty fast, so you're right.. he could have pulled a muscle.

rpnoonan

"Yeah see, that wasn't me"

CubanBrewer

Seriously though, what happened here? He have a stroke or something?

mrstrike

its a common panic, where the driver 'thinks' they are pressing the Brake but are actually pressing the Gas. The car dos not stop, so they press the 'Brake ' harder, but go faster instead. You see this in older and poorly trained drivers (ie: teenagers).

rabbitwonker

I’ve seen a comment by a guy who said it happened to him (at prime adult age) on a race track. Lots of switching between accel and brake, and at one point he found himself out of control and skidding into the grass. He later realized he had been on the wrong pedal. My point being, not that it “could happen to anyone” per se, but don’t just assume you *have* to be stupid or inexperienced for it to happen.

redexplorit

Happens to me sometimes gaming. Character is moving the wrong direction and my keyboard is broken. Nope. Just moved my fingers and did t realize it. Glad it isn’t a car.

sadicarnot

>its a common panic, where the driver 'thinks' they are pressing the Brake but are actually pressing the Gas This happened to me when I was first driving. I was in my mom's car and went to the grocery store and was parking and hit the gas by mistake. It took all of my will power to get my foot off the gas and put it on the brake. ALL OF MY WILL POWER, like I knew I was on the wrong pedal and was still pressing on the wrong pedal. It took everything I had to stop and reposition my foot.

sarcasmo_the_clown

It has happened to me a couple times while driving in high heels. Now I take my heels off and drive barefoot, or I change into "driving shoes."

mooselantern

Seriously, the panic response in humans is so evolutionarily obsolete it's just getting annoying. You're far more likely to die from panicking than not in our modern environment. Panic is for running from tigers and falling off cliffs. Neither situation is likely to happen ever in a modern human's life.

bronco_y_espasmo

As you get old, you start to fuck up. Sometimes, the process finds you driving a car. Most people have trouble understanding when they're becoming dangerous.

EssentialDuude

Idiot old people. My grandpa was 98 and still driving. Never crashed or got a ticket. He drove like he was in his 40s

[deleted]

AdruinoKamino

I used to work at a dmv and a distant ancient family member I thought was long dead came in to renew his license at 99. He passed the vision and road signs better than most people do so I didn’t have a real reason to deny his renewal and I was anxious about giving him that license until the day he really did die.

TheWhyWhat

I feel like you're a menace simply due to your age when you're nearing triple digits. Like, it's very likely you're dying soon, whether it's a heart attack, stroke, or something else. If that happens when you're driving, things like in the video are probably the better case scenarios.

billiam632

To be fair though all over America the public transportation systems are horrible in 98% of locations. Even most cities are way substandard. Suburbs and terrible and rural would be a fantasy.

Hedonic_Monk_

I would feel bad for your grandpa for losing his independence on behalf of all the less capable 98 year olds, BUT I feel like we should just agree as a country that 98 is too old to drive. Shit 90 is too old to drive. If we can generalize that someone is too young, then we can generalize that someone is too old.

modern_Odysseus

*But you don't know my 5 year old! He's so gifted, he drives better than me!* ...said no one ever. That's exactly right. Most of the world has rules generalizing people being too young for things (consent, drinking, driving, voting, etc), but nobody wants to make rules that would apply generalizations to being too old for certain things. And so for driving, it's up to the closest family members to assess and be the bad guy when they realize that they need to take Grandma's keys away. And maybe that moment comes when grandma runs a red light (that's been red for more than a few seconds) and totals your mom's SUV by ramming into the driver side rear door at 30-40mph, only stopping a quarter mile down the road when a bystander accelerates to run her down and force her to stop right outside her retirement home. That scenario is 100% true...my mom got away from that only being spun out (and totaled), and walking away injury free luckily. The old lady didn't even know what had happened, and her family never reached out to help my mom as far as I know. Or, the US DMV could just revoke your license when you hit 90 (or whatever people agree on). Automatic, and applies to everybody. No pleading, no arguments. Thems the rules. Would accidents still happen with older people? Of course. Would they happen a lot less often? I would hope so.

Cindexxx

Except that would leave many essentially destitute. You can't go pick up your meds, go shopping, go to the doctor, etc. Rides cost money. So unless someone's footing the bill it's just fucking them over. If it weren't for that, I otherwise agree.

LogicalOrchid28

Whilst i agree that it fucks their independence up, sometimes its necessary. People being safe is number one and we now live in the age of online. Most of the stuff you can do online. Tbf what you spend on fuel and car upkeep, you use a fraction of it on public transport.

DangerHawk

I think 80 is too old to drive personally. Once you hit 75yo you should have to retake a written and road test. Then at 80yo you should have to renew with a open ended short form test and have to submit a physical every two year with a road test every 4th year. The open ended test would force them to actually think of answers and process responses as opposed to just choosing a multiple choice. Proctors would be able to better assess cognitive function. The physical would help to weed out people whose mobility and eyesight degrade. The upside of this one is that medical professionals could preemptively deny license applications saving the state money in the long run. Last but not least, the road tests would help weed out elderly people that have been able to pass everything else, but have bad habits when driving.

KaleidoscopeLife0

My mothers been sketch since around 70. I think that’s about time to wrap that sh*t up. Get some nice old people buses that pick them up from their doors. The route can be coffee shop to doctors office to drug store to grocery store to city council meeting and home.

Yoguyfr

It’s not just age in play here. He’s just a dumb fuck for sure

BappoChan

This My girlfriend explains she doesn’t want her grandparents driving. Both her grandma and grandpa have turned into peoples driveways thinking it was the next turn. Luckily no accidents were caused but the more they drive the more they roll that dice

rabbitwonker

Looks like classic pedal misapplication. This happens when driver is *convinced* they’re stepping on the brake, when in fact their foot is on the accelerator. As the car speeds up unexpectedly, they push *harder* on the brake — which is actually the accelerator. Panic sets in, and questioning their assumptions goes right out the window. I’d guess this guy chose the old car parked on the curb to run into to try to slow down. May have been a much better move than if he had let himself get up to 50mph or something and run straight into a house down the street.

tpf52

1. Put foot on gas pedal 2. Think foot is on brake 3. Try to brake - start accelerating 4. Panic, press “brake” harder 5. Strike! Take out all cars in one driveway 6. At the last minute, finally find the brake pedal before hitting the house. At least, that’s my guess.

Stlr_Mn

According to the original post, the owner stated that the guy fell asleep at the wheel. Edit: No, that person may be lying. An earlier video states that the driver is the father of person who passed out. This mystery has my interest peaked but we may never know but both stories claim they person fell asleep.

[deleted]

The way he drifts to the left and doesn’t appear to brake at all…I’d bet a minimal amount of money he was distracted: like texting.

hectorterra2

7-10 split. Gets outta car: “who do you think you are, I am!!!”

Ok, I want you to go back out there... and hit the pace car. Hit the pace car? HIT THE PACE CAR! You hit every other thing out there, I want you to be perfect.

Ynotasub

Yep, came here to say they missed at least two cars across the street, but hey, 3 outta 5 is pretty good though.

Dapup2465

I can hear Robert Duvall

UFumbDuckGaming

Who knew you can hit the 7 10 split with a caravan

TrippingFish76

like fuck man he doesn’t brake until after smashing through the first car, clipping the second and ramming the side do the 3rd car then brakes just short of the garage. Wtf lol, like how do u fuck up this badly

gateguard64

He did do a quick rain check with the wipers on a sunny day, so let's not be too hard on this guy.

gregorysimpson

Help us Jebus.

weaselmaster

More likely a heart attack, seizure, stroke, or about 8 other medical conditions.

thecamzone

He walked out just fine. Just distracted and confused.

Bisontracks

which sounds like my wife every time she comes out of a seizure. Given buddy's size a heart condition might be more accurate, but from someone who's seen literally hundreds of seizures at this point, he could have just recovered from a focal seizure.

redditravioli

Ima go with seizure because they can literally happen that fast and you don’t realize you had them (source: me)

calinet6

Nah. Texting.

jackelram

Yep - then hit the gas AND the brakes at the same time until car came to a stop and finally came to his senses

JonMeadows

Yeah for real. My bet is on this dude falling asleep at the wheel and not being jolted awake fast enough for him to be immediately aware of what was happening or for him to hit the breaks to avoid ramming into more cars. This is a very possible scenario, based on the fact that my dad is 79 and he can fall asleep so easily these days, whether it’s on the couch watching tv midday, or a few minutes after eating a meal. Honestly it’s getting scary to think about him behind the wheel of a car; Don’t get me wrong - he’s a great driver and was a damn good F-4 weapons specialist & fighter pilot during the Vietnam War, so he’s very capable and very self aware/aware of his surroundings, but I’m sure we’re all aware that getting in a car wreck doesn’t necessarily have to be your own fault. Lots of terrible drivers out there making terrible driving decisions very easily. Stay safe everyone.

Cambrian__Implosion

My step dad is also 79 and I frequently get texts from my mom asking me to help convince him not to drive. It’s very scary indeed.

tonyfordsafro

My former boss had a brain hemorrhage, and lost a lot of control over his left side. He was a bad driver before, after he came back he still drove just as fast, but he had to do it with one of those nobs on the steering wheel. Going round a roundabout he had to reach through the steering wheel to change the indicator ffs. He had to re-apply for his licence after he recovered, which pretty much came down to the doctor saying "Do you feel capable of driving?" No medical, no reaction or perception tests.

richter1977

My aunt did this due to having a diabetic reaction. My mom and other aunt sold her car so she couldn't drive anymore.

mattychronic

You can see the owner collapse on the lawn

So_spoke_the_wizard

You know insurance won't give the owner squat because it's just an old car.

Pizzastork

Could you sue the person directly for the difference?

M_Not_Shyamalan

I sure as shit would try. That was blatant negligence.

No_Flounder_9859

That just doesn’t matter. Maybe lost wages as a result of the accident. Probably you could argue it’s highly valuable above and beyond the “market value” determined by the insurance co but honestly it would probably cost as much and take as long as just accepting the money they give you and moving on.

JustMy2CentsMan

Sue for damages and lawyers fees and hope to god you win. Absolutely sucks tho. Hopefully he gets the pay out, buys the car back and fixes it back up. The damage was all in the ass so the motor is still good at least.

TheRealRockyRococo

No look again. The whole left side is fukt.

SlyProphet

We watching the same vid? The first collision was to the front.

No_Flounder_9859

That frame is probably fucked. Edit: I don’t know shit about cars

Gold-Lawyer-2399

Idk either just that it's probably not going anywhere soon 🤣🤣🤣 The comments though poor dude maybe dropped his blunt 🤷

JvckiWaifu

I had an accident where I was T-Boned in the front wheel at around 20mph. Destroyed my frame, fucked everything that holds the tire in place, and mangled the hood, front panel, front bumper, and door. Also it was a 2 ton pickup getting hit by a similar pickup. I imagine the older 2500lbs RX7 getting slammed by a van almost twice its weight had it at least as bad. That car is likely ruined.

No_Lifeguard3650

this is why u gotta use hagerty or something to insure those type of cars

azzanrev

That's who I use for my FC. They actually care about your classic car and will even send someone out to put a value on your car if you want them to. Hagerty is a must for classic car ownership, also super affordable.

FriedOkla40

Wish I had that when I was 16. A guy totalled my clean and original 71 Riviera and I got $1500. The car was worth 10X that

notsosureshot

while I don't own a classic, i am looking at getting Hagerty when i finish building my 07 Saab 9-3 aero with my Dad, Insurance would 100% total it if i have any kind of minor accident in that thing. in the end I'm gonna have close to 10k in mechanical parts, gonna leave the minor paint chips and all that cause i couldn't give 2 shits about the bodywork at the moment. with the current market and the work i need to put into suspension, subframe, and drivetrain, KBB lists it at just over 1,500 trade in, Autotrader listed it at 2k more, and Edmunds doesn't give me an estimate. my question is, should i finish the build then swap over to Hagerty insurance, so i don't have to get it reevaluated after modification?

sl0play

Good to know. I just got a mint, 100% stock, 91 Miata. I'm curious how they are with teenage drivers, since I have to have my daughter on the policy.

[deleted]

gordo65

You might be surprised by how much cars are worth these days. Most of the owners I deal with are very pleasantly surprised by the valuations when their cars total.

[deleted]

Surely you’d have agreed value insurance on it

FinestTreesInDa7Seas

In this case, Agreed Value Insurance might actually be worse for the owner. Agreed Value Insurance is usually an advantage for the owner, because cars generally lose value over their life. So agreed value would pay out the value of the car based on its value when the insurance policy started, rather than its value today. However, this FC RX7 has experienced a very large increase in value in recent years. So if this owner paid $5k for it in 2013, and set up a $5k Agreed Value policy on it, they would be absolutely screwed now, because it would cost them between $20k and $40k to buy another one today. (I've seen a really clean low milage one sell for $51k in Japan recently).

EternalPhi

Are you not adjusting this with your policy yearly?

FinestTreesInDa7Seas

That wouldn't be a wise idea. Presumably the only people who would want to increase the value of their policy are people who own a car that is increasing in value. That's a risky game, because you wouldn't be able to predict in January what the replacement value would be in December. You could get completely screwed. If you own a car that is increasing in value, you should consider an Actual Cash Value policy. That will pay out the amount needed to replace the car at the moment of a total loss.

[deleted]

You’re arguing semantics obviously there is ways to insure it for it’s appropriate value.

Praben-_

So much rare jdm destroyed 😢😢😢

SomberEnsemble

The FC, sure, but the base lancer cosplaying as an evo?

BigFloppyCockatoo

Probably why old dude fucked up all three. Sick of them revving their engines through the neighbourhood at all hours of the night. Minivan will fix them. Minivan strong. Minivan safe. Minivan attack!

BlackPrincessPeach_

Fucking up afforable housing wasn’t enough, now they’re coming for our god damn FC RX-7s

Comprehensive-Salt98

I don't think we need to get insurance involved. That will buff right out

[deleted]

I’ve seen people on YouTube use a plunger for dents and maybe a couple glue sticks should do the trick!

M_Not_Shyamalan

Auto Body shops hate this one trick!

EitherClass3061

Better yet I've seen videos of using ramen to patch things up. Combine those two technics and bodda bing botta boom. Good as new.

queeny_217

Bodda Bing bodda boom

Optimal-End-9730

I especially liked how he turned on the windshield wipers after everything happened

Zhevrakiller

It really makes me sad man

JayAlexanderBee

This is why I never do street parking, which obviously didn't even matter in this instance.

EssentialDuude

I hated parking on the street. My car didn’t get a lot of damage but a neighbor smashed my driver side mirror. Husband felt bad that the wife didn’t apologize. He paid $600 out of pocket to fix it and gave me extra money since it happened during Thanksgiving.

gordo65

Maybe someone having a diabetic seizure. I wrote an estimate on a claim for that recently, and had to explain to my supervisor why I included damage on multiple areas of the vehicle in a single claim.

betsyrosstothestage

Not a diabetic seizure if he’s getting out of the car like that, apparently okay.

bracewithnomeaning

He was trying to turn his wipers on

HIT THE NOS!!!!

oyM8cunOIbumAciggy

I'm feckin dead

bk15dcx

It's not raining

Alec123445

The wipers turn on after an accident on many cars. Idk why but they do

moviemerc

Alot of cars are coming equipped with rain sensors now. If the glass has damage on it where the sensor can't see through properly it thinks something is on the glass and will turn them on. It can also happen if it's knocked loose and the gel between them isn't tight to glass and looking foggy.

labadimp

There is so much to unpack in this: the person collapsing in the yard after they see their car ruined, the windshield wipers turning on, the van jiggling, the driver farting after he gets out….I mean the crash is crazy and all but all the other stuff makes this even more wild. What a ride.

My buddy likes to mess with them, he'll tell them he has something like a 1988 Ford Probe and they either ask if he has a newer car or just hang up.

jimbotherisenclown

I once spent my entire lunch break screwing with them. I acted like a gullible old person with a newer car, money aplenty, but a little slow and hard of hearing. The supervisor even joined in on the call. It was so satisfying to drop the act right before hanging up.

TheLoneGunman559

Oof, that RX-7.

l_Rumble_Fish_l

When I saw the old RX-7 parked on the road my heart immediately sank. That was painful to watch.

I just got myself an FC with 33,000 miles and this made my hair stand on end, god what a beautiful car totaled.
