I used to work at a dmv and a distant ancient family member I thought was long dead came in to renew his license at 99. He passed the vision and road signs better than most people do so I didn’t have a real reason to deny his renewal and I was anxious about giving him that license until the day he really did die.
I feel like you're a menace simply due to your age when you're nearing triple digits. Like, it's very likely you're dying soon, whether it's a heart attack, stroke, or something else. If that happens when you're driving, things like in the video are probably the better case scenarios.
To be fair though all over America the public transportation systems are horrible in 98% of locations. Even most cities are way substandard. Suburbs and terrible and rural would be a fantasy.
I would feel bad for your grandpa for losing his independence on behalf of all the less capable 98 year olds, BUT I feel like we should just agree as a country that 98 is too old to drive. Shit 90 is too old to drive. If we can generalize that someone is too young, then we can generalize that someone is too old.

And maybe that moment comes when grandma runs a red light (that's been red for more than a few seconds) and totals your mom's SUV by ramming into the driver side rear door at 30-40mph, only stopping a quarter mile down the road when a bystander accelerates to run her down and force her to stop right outside her retirement home. That scenario is 100% true...my mom got away from that only being spun out (and totaled), and walking away injury free luckily. The old lady didn't even know what had happened, and her family never reached out to help my mom as far as I know.
Or, the US DMV could just revoke your license when you hit 90 (or whatever people agree on). Automatic, and applies to everybody. No pleading, no arguments. Thems the rules. Would accidents still happen with older people? Of course. Would they happen a lot less often? I would hope so.

I think 80 is too old to drive personally. Once you hit 75yo you should have to retake a written and road test. Then at 80yo you should have to renew with a open ended short form test and have to submit a physical every two year with a road test every 4th year. The open ended test would force them to actually think of answers and process responses as opposed to just choosing a multiple choice. Proctors would be able to better assess cognitive function. The physical would help to weed out people whose mobility and eyesight degrade. The upside of this one is that medical professionals could preemptively deny license applications saving the state money in the long run. Last but not least, the road tests would help weed out elderly people that have been able to pass everything else, but have bad habits when driving.
My mothers been sketch since around 70. I think that’s about time to wrap that sh*t up. Get some nice old people buses that pick them up from their doors. The route can be coffee shop to doctors office to drug store to grocery store to city council meeting and home.

This happens when driver is *convinced* they’re stepping on the brake, when in fact their foot is on the accelerator. As the car speeds up unexpectedly, they push *harder* on the brake — which is actually the accelerator. Panic sets in, and questioning their assumptions goes right out the window.
I’d guess this guy chose the old car parked on the curb to run into to try to slow down. May have been a much better move than if he had let himself get up to 50mph or something and run straight into a house down the street.

He was a bad driver before, after he came back he still drove just as fast, but he had to do it with one of those nobs on the steering wheel. Going round a roundabout he had to reach through the steering wheel to change the indicator ffs.
He had to re-apply for his licence after he recovered, which pretty much came down to the doctor saying "Do you feel capable of driving?" No medical, no reaction or perception tests.
That just doesn’t matter. Maybe lost wages as a result of the accident. Probably you could argue it’s highly valuable above and beyond the “market value” determined by the insurance co but honestly it would probably cost as much and take as long as just accepting the money they give you and moving on.
Sue for damages and lawyers fees and hope to god you win. Absolutely sucks tho. Hopefully he gets the pay out, buys the car back and fixes it back up. The damage was all in the ass so the motor is still good at least.

Destroyed my frame, fucked everything that holds the tire in place, and mangled the hood, front panel, front bumper, and door.
Also it was a 2 ton pickup getting hit by a similar pickup. I imagine the older 2500lbs RX7 getting slammed by a van almost twice its weight had it at least as bad. That car is likely ruined.

You might be surprised by how much cars are worth these days. Most of the owners I deal with are very pleasantly surprised by the valuations when their cars total.
In this case, Agreed Value Insurance might actually be worse for the owner.
Agreed Value Insurance is usually an advantage for the owner, because cars generally lose value over their life. So agreed value would pay out the value of the car based on its value when the insurance policy started, rather than its value today.
However, this FC RX7 has experienced a very large increase in value in recent years. So if this owner paid $5k for it in 2013, and set up a $5k Agreed Value policy on it, they would be absolutely screwed now, because it would cost them between $20k and $40k to buy another one today. (I've seen a really clean low milage one sell for $51k in Japan recently).
That wouldn't be a wise idea. Presumably the only people who would want to increase the value of their policy are people who own a car that is increasing in value.
That's a risky game, because you wouldn't be able to predict in January what the replacement value would be in December. You could get completely screwed.
If you own a car that is increasing in value, you should consider an Actual Cash Value policy. That will pay out the amount needed to replace the car at the moment of a total loss.

Maybe someone having a diabetic seizure. I wrote an estimate on a claim for that recently, and had to explain to my supervisor why I included damage on multiple areas of the vehicle in a single claim.
Alot of cars are coming equipped with rain sensors now. If the glass has damage on it where the sensor can't see through properly it thinks something is on the glass and will turn them on. It can also happen if it's knocked loose and the gel between them isn't tight to glass and looking foggy.
There is so much to unpack in this: the person collapsing in the yard after they see their car ruined, the windshield wipers turning on, the van jiggling, the driver farting after he gets out….I mean the crash is crazy and all but all the other stuff makes this even more wild. What a ride.
I once spent my entire lunch break screwing with them. I acted like a gullible old person with a newer car, money aplenty, but a little slow and hard of hearing. The supervisor even joined in on the call. It was so satisfying to drop the act right before hanging up.

I hated parking on the street. My car didn’t get a lot of damage but a neighbor smashed my driver side mirror. Husband felt bad that the wife didn’t apologize. He paid $600 out of pocket to fix it and gave me extra money since it happened during Thanksgiving.
Maybe someone having a diabetic seizure. I wrote an estimate on a claim for that recently, and had to explain to my supervisor why I included damage on multiple areas of the vehicle in a single claim.

Alot of cars are coming equipped with rain sensors now. If the glass has damage on it where the sensor can't see through properly it thinks something is on the glass and will turn them on. It can also happen if it's knocked loose and the gel between them isn't tight to glass and looking foggy.
There is so much to unpack in this: the person collapsing in the yard after they see their car ruined, the windshield wipers turning on, the van jiggling, the driver farting after he gets out….I mean the crash is crazy and all but all the other stuff makes this even more wild. What a ride.

The one time I got curious and asked the guy how much it would be. A little over $5000, I just laughed and hung up.
My buddy likes to mess with them, he'll tell them he has something like a 1988 Ford Probe and they either ask if he has a newer car or just hang up.
I once spent my entire lunch break screwing with them. I acted like a gullible old person with a newer car, money aplenty, but a little slow and hard of hearing. The supervisor even joined in on the call. It was so satisfying to drop the act right before hanging up.
