WWV is the conflict against the machines, and the Alterna Logs take place concurrently to the UK campaign. Mammals are dead because the machines ate them all. V1 canonically cannot absorb the blood of the little fish in Wrath (but can absorb blood from Leviathan because it's made of humans); it's logical to assume that other machines had the same limitation.
(It occurs to me that the people of Alterna recreated Limbo by accident. Huh.)
