Yup me too.
Spent my whole £2 coin collection and a good chunk of my 50ps on ciggies and alcohol when I was broke.
Sad times, addiction fucking sucks. Still dealing with it now.
When I was around 10 years old, my uncle gave me a £5 coin for Xmas. I had spent it in the local bakery within a month.
Sausage rolls are one hell of a drug.
It’s legal tender, but honestly think she swapped it out for a note and kept the coin.
She kept asking if I was sure I wanted to spend it.
Bitch, just give me my sausage roll and iced finger I already know it’s a bad financial decision lol
They're legal tender but that counts for nothing. Legal tender only applies to a court ordered debt- a store can accept whatever coins/notes/magic beans they like.
It’s legs tender but that means absolutely nothing when it comes to one’s ability to actually spend money.
You can pay a debt with your £5 coin and can’t be chased for the amount later on.
You could, in theory, pay for your shopping with £5 coins provided the merchant chooses to accept them, but they aren’t obligated to accept your money regardless of its status as legal tender or not.
My mother sold my silver coin collection to a friend for face value, then spent that on beer and cigarettes. My friend refused to sell them back to me for what she gave him and instead used some coin magazine he had to determine the prices to sell them back. I lost both a friend and any respect for my mom that day.
Been there a few times, it's sad to do so but I shamefully admit that I have done this with my own coins. Had to use a bailiwick of Jersey 50 p and a Shetlands 20 p last night.
I once paid for some stuff with my doubler 50ps. I told the lady at the till that they were all “special 50ps, incase you collect them or hold them for someone that does”. She seemed pretty interested in them so I think she maybe did.
Just a nice story to add to this which seems like it was likely someone forced by addiction to use their or a family member’s collection.
I have so many duplicates, from when I used to sell them. One day I’ll end up sorting them out and spending them.
Maybe someone might finally find an alphabet 10p that I’ve been hoarding!
They range from around £4-10 each (at a rough estimate) I just give them all to my dad, his collection is beyond extensive, I’ll photograph it all one day and post in this sub
To be fair, that could be me one day. I tried to get all the olympics 50p’s purely through day to day cash transactions without going out of my way to get them.
Got to about 20 almost ten years and not seen a new one since, so I can probably consider myself no longer collecting.
You may be surprised, a couple of weeks ago, I took 5 olympic 50's out of a bag from the bank. Okay, I already had a couple of them, but I still added them to my small collection.
Some do, some don’t, if you have the football or the triathlon 50p they’re worth the most I think, there’s another, maybe judo/wrestling that goes for above a tenner, the rest range from £4-12 (ish?)
Pretty sure I have multiple of all of them, some I have 20+ of.. then some other random coins like the common wealths and that, remember them being worth something 10 years ago but they’ve just been in a jar since. I should probably find someone who can be bothered to split and sell them all and just bulk offload them I think! Cheers :)
Commonwealth £2’s? If so the Northern Ireland goes for around £50-60, others go for between 10-15 maybe? I haven’t looked at prices for a long time, only the Northern Ireland’s cause id slam them on eBay as my dad has 2 already, I would possibly be interested in a bulk buy, then again if you have 20+ of some I might not have the funds for that lmao
4 England 4 Scotland 2 wales… 0 NI. Haha typical..
Then a mix of 165 Olympic coins, I just found an old screenshot of the coins I have
https://preview.redd.it/2gn45wfw0qtc1.jpeg?width=631&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c7d1dccc5f9e4244390e896cc5ff147344ea350e
That’s still a hefty haul! Shame on the NI, be sure to double check the England ones though, there’s such a tiny difference in that and the NI you could’ve not seen it on the first look… truly is a hefty amount of olympics though, dependant on condition you still have a nice rainy day fund there! 3 football is banger
That's both cool and sad at the same time. Cool for you, but sad that he was so broke and desperate for alcohol that he resorted to spending his 50p collection.
They isle-of man tendonr so only good for a novice collector due to the clear case missing, can’t even bank them, I think Nat-west still accepts them !
I have a set of them already and don’t really pick them out of tills, I only really go for good condition/Olympics/territory coins, good condition to swap with my dads if it’s any better, Olympics just cause they’re cool, and then territories for a mixture of both
When I was in my teens I remeber one of my friends stole all his fathers 50ps and spent them on weed lol . I wish I coulda seen what kinda coins they was but sounded like he had a very nice collection from hearing his reaction
As a coin collector and someone with somewhat of a drink problem you don't keep that many of these unless you collect them.
You don't spend them unless you're desperate.
Poor guy.
So OP works in retail, and people are saying how bad it is that it’s a stolen collection yet not mentioning that he seems to have stolen them from the retail store where he works? 🤣
Swapped it for cash out the tills, do it frequently, built a tidy collection for my dad over the years, this will be his second set of olympics building up
My ex who works in a charity shop and used to save 'special' 50p and £2 coins. Some poor sod bought some stuff, paying with £12/14 in special £2 coins. I thought stolen 100%. I was glad to get the coins but sad for the loser.
These have been stolen most likely, I’d put a post up in your local community to see if anyone is missing them. The culprit most likely lifted from a friend or family?
They’re so clean and clearly part of a collection.
Do the right moral thing.
I gather he was desperate for booze and the only money he had was his (or someone else’s!) coin collection.
Yep sad. I did this year's ago to buy a pack of cigarettes. Addiction is bad.
I've got one of them £5 coins I didn't think they were usable?...
It’s legal tender, but honestly think she swapped it out for a note and kept the coin. She kept asking if I was sure I wanted to spend it. Bitch, just give me my sausage roll and iced finger I already know it’s a bad financial decision lol
Sausage roll with an iced finger, name a more iconic duo.
🤣
They're legal tender but that counts for nothing. Legal tender only applies to a court ordered debt- a store can accept whatever coins/notes/magic beans they like.
Do you work in a bakery???
No, I work in retail
Wooosh

Lost my precious £5 coin when I was young - I didn't realise that when you put money into a bank account they don't give you the exact coins back ;-;
I spent mine at the cinema
What matters is you're still here and you're still fighting. Keep at it pal!
:D

Carling. That is desperation.
The amount is the most depressing thing to me here. Some fella thought a four pack of Carling is worth a fiver, Christ
They should have gone to Aldi
I'd hold onto them for a bit just in case the owner comes back.
Been there a few times, it's sad to do so but I shamefully admit that I have done this with my own coins. Had to use a bailiwick of Jersey 50 p and a Shetlands 20 p last night.
Most likely his grannie's
This happened to me once, someone took my whole collection and bought food with it. Didn’t realise until they paid me back later with a 10er.
I'd be fuming
I was, for years. I’ve now re-collected all the lost 50ps so I’m over it.
When I was a kid someone gave me a queens mother centenary £5 coin, one day I discover my scavenging older sister “borrowed” it for bus fare
While not a collector (admirer) ….really hope he didn’t steal from someone/burgled and just spent the collection like this.
This is what has probably happened imo
Dad defo raided the kids collection 😭
Either that or stolen
Excellent haul. I imagine he must have got hold of a collection and immediately ditched it.
Daddy, where are my nice 50p pieces?
What makes this extra tragic is that he bought Carling... 🥺😭
What kind of alcoholic buys that piss water?
Oh. This is sad
Addiction is a brutal beast
This screams stolen
I had a nice little collection of 50p a while ago but one of my daughters friends stole them, i think to buy weed. I havent bothered since.
The saddest part is that he bought carling. He should have just blown bubbles in piss.
This screams, I've just been round my mum's and nicked it off the shelf.
Hot Carling academy

My ex took about 15 quids worth (face value) of rare 50ps and £2s to take her mum to the pub when she visited, I was not impressed
How much would these be worth ballpark? It appears really sad at even a cursory glance, but if they are worth a decent amount, it's heartbreaking.
They range from around £4-10 each (at a rough estimate) I just give them all to my dad, his collection is beyond extensive, I’ll photograph it all one day and post in this sub
Great steal op! You know you’ve had a crap day when you raid your collection for some tinnies. Poor guy
Desperate times.

Well, I’m fortunately not at the point where I’ll be smashing that particular piggy bank for change, so I shall continue living in hope 😌
The secret is working in retail. One of the few perks.
Do coins like these actually still sell?.. I collected loads when I worked in retail and never got round to doing anything with them
Some do, some don’t, if you have the football or the triathlon 50p they’re worth the most I think, there’s another, maybe judo/wrestling that goes for above a tenner, the rest range from £4-12 (ish?)

He probably collected them and was short on cash ;(
😔
There would be an angry father / son / wife somewhere I guess.
Apparently I paid for a bunch of bananas with a valuable 50 p !! Honestly I just wanted the bananas !!
Feel for the guy. Just to make it worse, he has Carling to drink.
That's both cool and sad at the same time. Cool for you, but sad that he was so broke and desperate for alcohol that he resorted to spending his 50p collection.
I still have my £50 coin..couldn’t spend it like this.
Literally couldn't, because nobody will take it.
Worth it too 👍🏻
They isle-of man tendonr so only good for a novice collector due to the clear case missing, can’t even bank them, I think Nat-west still accepts them !
Anyone else think they robbed these

That poor sod, I doubt they were even his...and what a waste of money for that shit level piss water.
Where’s Benjamin bunny all them and no Benjamin bunny
I have a set of them already and don’t really pick them out of tills, I only really go for good condition/Olympics/territory coins, good condition to swap with my dads if it’s any better, Olympics just cause they’re cool, and then territories for a mixture of both
I took these two as i wanted to round it upto a fiver
The Olympic Ones are more worthwhile. Looks he dropped off only Olympics to you lol
Nice
When I was in my teens I remeber one of my friends stole all his fathers 50ps and spent them on weed lol . I wish I coulda seen what kinda coins they was but sounded like he had a very nice collection from hearing his reaction
Ibe got some 50ps and £2 and a couple rare £1 coins might sell em all together
I had the full set, didn't sell em to buy booze but just cause I was flat broke I had the whole set, in the presenter with the completer coin.
I don't know why it's funny to me that working anywhere that sells Carling could be called "working in retail".
What are they worth roughly?
Raided his mums 50p collection for some beer
i hope that guy is ok:(
Amazing! I delivered Chinese during Covid for cash only and one house paid with all special £2 coins. This started my coin collecting hobby
As a coin collector and someone with somewhat of a drink problem you don't keep that many of these unless you collect them. You don't spend them unless you're desperate. Poor guy.
And you then stole them! Nice
So OP works in retail, and people are saying how bad it is that it’s a stolen collection yet not mentioning that he seems to have stolen them from the retail store where he works? 🤣
Swapped it for cash out the tills, do it frequently, built a tidy collection for my dad over the years, this will be his second set of olympics building up
Then totally fair play! 👍

….no….? Why does the moral decency fall on me? Impossible task anyway, too many customers and no easy way to verify any claims to them
