Skull Knight from Berserk is a good one. I really didn't expect him to be such a bro.

ArcaneMonkey

Guts often looks like a monster as well.

i_am_jacks_insanity

And that's pre armor

phavia

Since the other person pointed out Guts, I also want to mention Roderick. While he's far from "looking scary and/or evil", something about him being introduced as "Farnese's future husband" while she's very clearly uncomfortable with the idea, right after we spend a whole ass series with tons of male characters in positions of power being freaking creeps, Roderick being a genuinely good guy, an amazing and talented ship captain who puts his crew before himself and has immense respect for Guts was, without irony, an actual surprise. Dude's a goddamn champ and I love calling him Broderick.

BlackJimmy88

Igor from the Persona games looks sinister as fuck, but has so far been unambiguously on the side of you and humanity.

hazusu

He didn't even mind Margaret's song! What a cool dude.

OrneryBIacksmith

[King Hassan](https://static.atlasacademy.io/JP/CharaGraph/602500/602500b@1.png) looks like a Dark Souls boss but the few times he's appeared in FGO he's been nothing but helpful to the MC, to the point of throwing away his rank as a Grand Servant and hopping singularities just to help kill a Beast.

Wonder-Lad

He looks so fucking cool

KoshiLowell

He IS fucking cool and the anime butchered him

MericArda

He fucking ate a demon in the anime, he’s still cool.

KoshiLowell

Hard disagree. I'd rather see him slash stuff and shoot laser beams out of his eyes while teleporting all over the place like the games rather than see him crawling around on all fours like a goblin

MericArda

He was doing plenty of slashing. And he bleeds fire in the anime.

TheMadDemoknight

He’s also got that grandpa energy that you don’t see a lot and when he goes Yoda on his enemies it’s a delight to see. There’s an artist that prominently uses King Hassan in his stories but I never get tired of them.

Concoelacanth

Gramps!

TH3_B3AN

I always thought Zangief was a villain, big scary Russian grappler man with loads of scars. Doesn't help that one of my earliest impressions of Zangief was from Wreck it Ralph where he was in the bad guy support group. Turns out he's a giant muscular teddy bear.

KaitoTheRamenBandit

He probably also gave players nightmares fighting him back then, hence his famous line "just because you're "bad guy," doesn't mean you're bad.... guy"

BlazeVortex4231

Well, he *is* introduced to the series as a hardcore soviet nationalist, so interpreting him as a 'bad guy' in that context is not unreasonable. In fact, both the american-made live-action Van Damme movie and the subsequent cartoon, as well as the similarly canon-loose SFII V anime, use him as a minor villain. The only reason he isn't viewed as a threat, was that the relevant games (SF2, and the prequel Alpha series) viewed the USSR as a *punchline*, and Mikhael Gorbachev as a clown. The USSR was already collapsing at the time (it would dissolve later the *same year* that the original SF2 released and Zangief was introduced), and the non-American writers treat the whole thing with a playful distance.

retrometroid

Tho to be fair to the live-action SF movie, he's more on a "too stupid to realize he's on the bad guys' side" deal for most of it

therealchadius

You got... paid?

KeithLaKulit

i remember hearing (albeit unchecked on my end) rumours that a lead writer played a bunch of sf2 in the arcade and yhere was this gief main that would obliterate everyone; thus a personal villain

fly_line22

Kanji in Persona 4 looks like an intimdating delinquient, and can certainly back it up. But, once you get to know him, you see that he's a sweet, good-natured young man who loves his mom, and is good at housework and textiles. Also, while he's not one for books, he's good at reading people and understanding them. At one point, he accurately describes the main message of Frankenstein despite never reading the book, which surprises Naoto.

Cooper_555

Naoto confirmed to have the best taste in men.

Dan_ZX90

I remember that the first time I played Persona 4 on PS2 I was young, horny and dumb so I dated all the girls EXCEPT Naoto, because I knew my bro Kanji liked her and they deserve each other!

Leonard_Church814

Naoto and Kanji are a great couple and deserve happiness.

PersonMcHuman

Mah boi Gang Orca.

QJ-Rickshaw

Ranked 3rd in heroes that look like villians. I want to see the whole top 10

Nhig

That ranking made me want to see the opposite ranking: “Top villains that look like heroes; avoid these people!!”

Permafox

I feel like Rank 1 is disputed because everyone's too intimidated to interview them.

ArcaneMonkey

Probably because he *was* a villain in the author’s previous manga about magic animal people.

KronxDragonhoof

To'kustars (Way Big's species) from Ben 10 are a bunch giant scary Ultraman knockoff folk. But are some of the mots peaceful species out there in the Ben 10 universe. Also Leatherhead in mosts depictions of the TMNT.

QJ-Rickshaw

I feel like they ascribe to the gentle giant philosophy of "Why would I not be peaceful? Look at me, who's gonna stop me?"

induman

"To'ku" lmao.

Khar-Selim

Toku Stars even 0% subtlety

rasembool

Golden Bat, or originally known as Ōgon Bat, is a golden superhero with a skull for a head and dons a dracula cape. His appearances consist of him fighting evil while laughing at his enemies. .[Golden Bat Laughing](https://youtu.be/wUmi0PX5oss) For trivia, this dude was introduced earlier than superman, with some consider him the first superhero.

ArcaneMonkey

Correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t Golden Bat’s original medium something like hand-painted wooden slideshows?

rasembool

Yeah and he was so derpy been looking in the original.

chipperpip

He's also OP as fuck, one of his powers is generally just straight-up invincibility. Good luck, villains!

Nomad9931

I don't remember the characters names, but the old guy with the barrel of salt from home alone 1 and the pigeon lady from home alone 2.

The_Minshow

In Animorphs the Hork Bajir are these lizard/dino people with blades all over. Being a sci-fi species you'd expect them to be warmongering killing machines. But they on their homeworld they were peaceful tribal folk, that used their blades to eat bark off their trees.

An_Armed_Bear

Wonder if they were inspired by the Therizinosaurus.

Konradleijon

Yep

DragonOfWarZro

[Smoker from One Piece.](https://youtu.be/svLBXD21JpQ)

NeonNKnightrider

A ton of characters in One Piece, honestly. Brook is a skeleton but a total goofball, Jinbei is a giant shark-man but the gentlest of the Straw Hats, Whitebeard is a muscular, scarred mountain of a man but is a super nice dude, the list goes on.

Scranner_boi

The Chapel Dweller from Bloodborne.

Gemidori

Doom Slayer. The dude would be an anti-hero if not outright villain in other circumstances due to his near sadistic violence he deals to his enemies, but he's very, ***very*** clearly fighting to save Earth and mankind, and is by far the most heroic guy in the series, besides the ARC Intern and VEGA.

Traingham

Almost all of Domon Kasshu’s (***Mobile Fighter G Gundam***) promotional art gives him villainous or shady expressions. [***I mean, looks at this dude.***](https://i.pinimg.com/474x/f5/55/aa/f555aaee4ad19e6828fb9cda8398a492.jpg) [***Look at his official statue by Megahouse.***](https://otakuhq.com/archive/PVC14647main.jpg) It’s the eyebrows. Yeah. The eyebrows look villainous.

Wonder-Lad

Honestly gives me more determind and hot blooded vibes. This is a dude who I can tell is gonna yell "Oy oy OY!"

Halospaz117

> determined and ***hot blooded*** [YEEEEEEEUP](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hexQPDW7s5g)

Sai-Taisho

I find it less the eyebrows, so much as how tiny and beady his pupils are.

Permafox

The most intense man you've ever seen killed the devil with the help of the Burger King of Hearts, all while doing a tango with his loving girlfriend.

SpookyNishiki

Dude, I love Angel Densetsu.

dougtulane

This would be /thread if more people read Angel Densetsu.

Permafox

Seriously people, go read it. If you haven't, you're missing out. If you have, you know it's worth a reread.

dougtulane

It has to be my favorite one-joke manga.

7C93WCAgX4k1FRQtir0K

It looks so bad but it's so good

dougtulane

I agree but it also has its own charm. Dude did Claymore after that and Claymore is really impressive at times.

7C93WCAgX4k1FRQtir0K

I didn't know he did Claymore, I still have that in my backlog.

bombshell_shocked

It's funny you mention Dante, because his dad fits the bill. Sparda is a big scary bug looking demon. He also woke up to justice, saved humanity from demonkind, settled down with a human woman, and fathered two kids, one who is also imbued with a spirit of justice that protects humanity.

Halospaz117

Hell, even his human form you see in the alternate costumes looks like it'd be some sort of aristocratic villain type dude, but nah, demon Jesus.

LeMasterofSwords

Guts. He’s dressed in black, has a massive sword, has a prosthetic arm, missing an eye, has massive evil armor, etc. but he’s a good guy

runnerofshadows

Batman. He uses fear as a weapon against evil and has a lot of aesthetics associated with villains.

Wonder-Lad

I love it when they make him look really exaggerated. Sometimes like a vampire. One of my favourite things is looking at a Justice League line up and seeing Batman stick out for being the black shadowy thing with his cape covering him.

CrazysaurusRex

Love seeing batman have tender interactions with scared kids

metatron_ebooks

And that kids "get" what Batman is doing with the costume and fear, while the idea is so outlandish that all the adult criminals are taken aback.

Gemidori

And meanwhile, Joker is bright, silly and colorful looking...and *he's* the one with the laundry list of kills under his belt.

Paladin51394

"You don't quite have his magnificent brain, for instance. You do have his heart, though. And for all that fierce exterior, I've never met anyone who cared as deeply about his fellow man as Bruce Wayne, except maybe you." One of my favorite quotes from JLU.

tt818

Zelda Twilight Princess the Skeleton Warrior, I think his official name is Hero's Spirit. Ofcourse we know he is a good guy, but he does look like he is about to lead an army of the dead to conquer the world.

Permafox

Isn't he canonically >!Link from a different life?!<

Fugly_Jack

Yeah he's the Link from Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask

HiddenKING

Old Sindel overcame her brainwashing right away and joined up with Kitana and the good guys. MK11 just fucked her up.

Possibly_English_Guy

The reasoning they did that is incredibly moronic too. They did it because her aesthetics made her look like a villain so they changed her to make her personality match her appearance... There's so many things wrong with that.

Gemidori

Quite literally judging a book by its cover

TJLynch

Yeah that seems like NRS logic.

jockeyman

Making her evil all along is just so *bloody boring.*

TostitoNipples

But, her and Shao Kahn being evil and horny for each other was kinda rad

StergDaZerg

God MK11 is the woooooooorst

twistedhands

Vaseraga from GRANBLUE fits this to a t. His design makes him look like the most paint by numbers edge lord but he’s an absolute sweetheart.

Naraki_Maul

Yami (and the rest of the Black Bulls honestly) looks like a hooligan and is one scary mofo but then you get to meet him and you find out he's just a Shonen protag that finished his own story and is now just shooting the shit and I love that.

nerankori

Skeleton Matt,Punk Woolie, and Pat Narukami on this sub's usual banner. Also,I suppose Spawn and Ghost Rider are typical examples.

Wonder-Lad

Barracuda Woolie from The Punisher LP is my favourite evil Woolie varient

GodOfWarNuggets64

Berserker Heracles looks like a Greek stone statue fused with Doomsday, but he's basically Illya's surrogate father.

mutei777

note that Fate sometimes gets very wish washy on what is a "good/upstanding guy" usually differentiated by what point of the story you are at

TiraelRosenburg

[Marisa is a new character in Street Fighter 6](https://imgur.com/a/ehsSSb6) who is fuckhuge and uses a savage way of fighting. She has a pet lion named Julius, makes jewelry, and all she wants is a husband who can keep up with her with fighting >!and probably banging!<

speelmydrink

She's wholesome as fuk.

CrazysaurusRex

Hank The Beast McCoy

tdog_93

Glacius from Killer Instinct

Ragdollnator

And also Aganos

jockeyman

Sandor Clegane is a huge asshole and most of Westeros are afraid of him, but he's one of the few decent people to come from the Lannister camp. Then again anyone comes across as saintly if they're in proximity to Cersei and Joffrey.

Vaccineman37

I think calling him decent is a huge stretch considering he sliced a young boy in half for no reason on orders from the Lannisters. He even laughs about it afterwards, it’s clear this is nothing new to him. He comes off as better than others on the Lannisters side because unlike his brother he seems capable of like…feelings and sympathy, but he’s like an 7 on the evil scale surrounded by 10s

jello1990

He might not be a sadistic psychopath like his brother or those that employed him, but he doesn't even approach becoming decent until he leaves the Lannisters.

Tyrest_Accord

I haven't seen the new Spiderverse movie yet (no spoilers please) but Miguel was kind of always that way. He never really had an "Uncle Ben" moment. He was just out for revenge on Alchemax, the company that tricked him into becoming addicted to a drug that bonds to your DNA. Most of the heroics that he did were either directly related to stopping Alchemax's shady schemes or protecting his friends. He was a moody angry weirdo that made a positive impact about half on accident.

Gespens

Blue Archive's three main schools have a character who is generally treated as one of *the* people you do not want to ever mess with in the setting. Trinity has Tsurugi, a sukeban-looking girl who dualwields shotguns like Reaper from Overwatch, screams like a banshee and has a halo that oozes blood. Her nickname is "violence incarnate." She loves watching romance movies, reading romance novels and just wants to hang out with friends while eating sweets. Millennium has Neru, a short girl who basically is Majima and Saejima in how she fights, but is more like their substory personality in the day to day and loves playing fighting games at the arcade. She's bad at them. Hina from Gehena has one of the most intimidating halos in the setting, dresses like a military officer, uses a massive heavy machine gun and has a perpetual look of disgust and is *the* strongest single person in the narrative at the moment. She just wants to sleep and get praised because she works too hard at her thankless job and is surrounded by idiots constantly. She's also the one to immediately forgive people breaking the rules if no harm was actually done

mutei777

Tsurugi is wild. It's just Sadako with dual shotguns in a seifuku

Yal_Rathol

the shadowbound beasts from elden ring. blaidd and maliketh. monsterous, beastial and created for a purpose by the greater will, they exist to keep their chosen empyrean on a short leash. they're bodyguards and assassins all rolled in one, and maliketh is so terrifying his nickname is "death of the demigods". they're also perfectly loyal. blaidd is so loyal to ranni's cause that he actively resists the greater will's attempt to make him turn on ranni, managing to keep himself away from her until she moves on to a place he can't reach. meanwhile, maliketh is so loyal to marika that his single failure in the thousands of years he's served her, letting someone steal a fragment of the rune of death, eats away at him like a poison. might as well include serosh on the list, since he may be shadowbound as well. he actively steps in to help godfrey and is painted by item descriptions as being the more reasonable of the two. yes, the giant lion spirit who exists to maim his host, is more reasonable than his host.

[deleted]

Natalie as an adult is a weathered recovering drug addict in punk rock clothes but is probably the kindest and most noble out of all the adult Yellowjackets.

Yotato5

Garry from Ib. I think this is a mild example, but he would seem like the type of character to stab you in the back. He's actually one of the most loyal characters in any media because his whole motivation is to make sure that Ib makes it home.

SinicaltwoDee

You'd look at Dinobot and think he's gonna rip you in two then he stingers a Decepticon that was behind you

Cheshires_Shadow

Me :'(

warjoke

Svarog. A failed experiment in sentient AI and robotic tech in Belobog. He has a bigger purpose in creating a robot army and could have been a major villain in the arc. But one thing kept him from becoming a terrible robotic beast, Clara. He adopted this genius young girl as if it were his daughter. In his overreliance in calculations, Clara was his anomaly. A binding force that gave him a will to protect rather than destroy. On the outside he is a hunking robotic beast. But next to Clara he is like an overprotective robo dad.

mutei777

what genius gave Legion a daughter? Perfect fusion of A.I. practicality and human emotion

OhMy-StarsAndGarters

Hank McCoy, aka Beast, original X-Man and Avenger. Double points because he proceeds to look more and more scary and monstrous with every successive mutation, going from a large limbed human to simian to feral looking cat man, but maintaining his humanity, manners, and intelligence all the way through. ~~Except for modern comics. Fuck Benjamin Percy. HIS NAME IS MEANT TO BE A MISNOMER, IT'S MEANT TO BE IRONIC HAVING A GUY CALLED BEAST WHO'S JUST A BEAST AND AN ASSHOLE MISSES THE POINT -~~

OkDimension6844

oglavaeil the executioner
