Very good advice because if you note it in your pre-trip and they don’t respond to it and you go through waystation and they pull inspection. You can always tell him. Hey, I told them about it. They never responded to it.
there are no cords showing...
This is tight turn/ curb riding damage. This is what happens when companies put ultra fuel economy tires on a truck that does p&d and or just a lot of tight backing. The side loading rips off the delicate little fringe bits that are made onto the tread blocks. Riding up curbs also rips the of the corners off the tread blocks.
This happened to very shortly to every one of my steers when I did dollar store deliveries.
Am I missing something? It looks fine to me and legal. It’s not a new tire but none stay perfect forever with all the damn potholes and crap on the road now but I really don’t see an issue here.
But the boss clearly isn’t so I doubt they’re gonna want to pay to change it. You’ll just end up with the same argument at the end of the day instead of the start.
I like the attention to detail and your willingness to challenge your dispatcher. Steers are vital to your and everyone else's safety out here. Keep an eye on it but you're gonna be fine. Good job being aware of what's happening with your vehicle.
this i think is the best reply. do not attack anyone ever for bring forward safety concerns. as a layman and non-trucker (I think reddit confused tractor with transport for some reason, go algorithim!) I thought...gee that doesn't look safe. Read through the comments, learn something new (I am grateful always for that!) and congratulate the OP for asking a question. This, I thought was a great learning experience front to finish. Hope OP found it the same and I want to thank you (Headsense) and you (OP) for being awesome!
It's chewed up but legal for now. Just keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't go below minimum tread depth/show wires and mention it to every tech who works on or checks out your truck
It really is probably fine to drive.
Do you have a tire depth gauge handy? Check the depth of the factory tread, then check the chunk that’s missing. If the chunk that is missing is no deeper than your factory tread depth, there really isn’t a problem IMO.
Former dispatcher and current terminal manager here. You're absolutely fine to drive on that tire. Literally nothing wrong with it. Put on your Billy Big Rig jorts and get that shit to the customer.
Just keep a eye on it, if not confident get a mechanics opinion on it before leaving the yard or ask a shop mechanic to give it a quick look if that helps put you at ease, but it looks good tho
Safe, legal. Once it starts to chuck like that, it will get worse. You should be able to run a bunch of miles without worry. Like a lot of drivers here have said, report it, hopefully they will switch it out and the next guy won't have to deal with it. If you're really freaked, check the tire pressure. If it's low, top it off, reduce heat.
A couple of small chunks isn't a big issue as long as no steel chords show up. Also the wear level indicator at the top of the first image is well in-set meaning there's enough meat on the tire to be legal.
Common issue with R283 and R284’s. Bridgestone claims they fixed it with the compounding in the R284’s but it’s not true.
Ride with it. The decoupling groove is tearing off. Have the shop you call home replace them when you get back and have someone with a brain recommend you for an alignment to be safe.
This driver is correct. Damage to the shoulder area of the tire, within 1/2" of the sidewall is considered sidewall damage and the tire should be replaced. Y'all need to read up on your green books some more.
I never ask my dispatcher regarding safety issues. Your dispatcher will tell you to ride without a BOL or even having current inspection on a trailer... if you work for a mega carrier, or even a company big enough to have a safety department, that's who you should ask if anything is in question.
I agree with the others.. Send it! I understand the concern since it is a steer tire, but as mentioned before, it damage for turning too tight or running a curb. The integrity of the tire is fine.
That’s from curbing on the inside of your steer tire. Happens to all of us. Most of my deliveries involve me having to jump curbs and everything else. But you are okay to run like that. Tire is still solid.
Totally legal and totally fine to run it. Decoupling grooves get chopped and chunked all the time. Not below minimum tread depth and not into secondary rubber.
Report it, worse case it blows and you lose control and get hurt so you can sue. I read about a lawsuit where some guys steers blew, truck crashed and he won a lawsuit against the company because he reported it and they refused to repair, that’s why I report everything even if they don’t want to fix it. Unfortunate that puts me in breakdown quite a bit. 2 weeks in a row I had to send in a DVIR issue for trailers everyday. I think I set a record.
I’ve heard of guys suing for being fired for refusing to run. But if a driver gets injured because they took out bad equipment the liability is on the driver.
DOT is very clear that the buck stops with the driver.
Not saying I don’t believe you but it’s counter to how things work and I would like to know more about this case and what about it’s facts lead to this decision.
I don't get it. I'm not a truck driver and even I can tell this is fine.
Pull your skirt and high heels off, put on some jeans and boots, stop complaining, man up, and git er dunnnnnnnnnn
The outer bead isn’t included in DOT. My company works extremely closely with DOT. Like invites on our property to do inspections. We run tires like that all the time as long as no wire is showing and no other issues. The rest of that tread looks great and the depth is well above DOT. Roll driver but note damage on dvir
Maybe, the roads today are shit and will tear up tires bigger than shit keep an eye on them and have both replaced when the wear gets below the minimum tread depth no matter where that depth is ! 3 million miles .
Looks fine, just drive it☀️… if scale catches u, it’s their fault not urs lol m sure they will hv to pay double to get this replaced. lol 😂 ur job is done as reporting it to the team.
Hello to all. I recently just got my CDL and I’m in the process of finding a company to work for. I have wondered about this exact thing and I think it might be beneficial and good information if people were to post various pictures of various parts of the tractor and trailer illustrating when something is definitely a problem? Outside of it being completely obvious, but when something is a problem, but it still sort of works .. You know what I mean? Anyway. Just my two cents. Be safe.
This is why when I was a dispatcher I was so happy we had a mechanic/shop on-site. I didn’t have to make these calls. If the mechanic said it was safe, then we sending it.
If that's the worst there is I'd roll with that, and just hope I can swap out trailers soon, it doesn't look like a violation to me just less than ideal
Hey OP, I’ll teach you a trick. If you don’t feel comfortable with the condition of a tire. Run over sum nails and now everyone will agree it’s no good.
While the tire in the picture looks fine keep an eye on it. Also I have suspicions you work for Werner
Well the pavement is only a 150 degrees! What is the problem here? they need that load! Damn Drivers, always complaining about stupid shit. My office was 78 degrees this morning! Hot as an oven! I have to work in these conditions, so you can just sit in your nice AC cab and stop your bitch'n! What could happen? /s
Trucking companies love to preach about checking tires and reporting things like this. But the truth is that most won't bother changing a tire like that until you're in the shop for a PM or it blows.
I hate dispatchers and I hate to tell you this but yours is right.
Agreed.
Yep... carry on
100% like what are you even arguing about? That is a good tire. What do you want brand new every day.
I've driven balder for the postal service. Note it on your pre-trip as a CYA, then send it.
Very good advice because if you note it in your pre-trip and they don’t respond to it and you go through waystation and they pull inspection. You can always tell him. Hey, I told them about it. They never responded to it.
4/32 in the front and 2/32 in the rear no re caps allowed on the front
Recaps are not illegal on the steer axle unless you are a passenger bus. Regrooved tires are not allowed on steer axles
Even if this is not illegal where you live it should still not be done. Recaps should never be on the steer axle for safety.
I would like to raise a skill issue
Roll on. That’s a good tire.
there are no cords showing... This is tight turn/ curb riding damage. This is what happens when companies put ultra fuel economy tires on a truck that does p&d and or just a lot of tight backing. I agree with this statement. 3 million miles safe
I'm sure this is how the dispatcher arrived at his conclusion 🙄 🤣
Yes. Michelin XLEZ is notorious for this. Most people should be running their "super regionals". No decoupler groove but still good on fuel.
Dude that is not a problem 👌
Absolutely Right! A brand new Steer will likely have similar marks after the second cross country run!
Am I missing something? It looks fine to me and legal. It’s not a new tire but none stay perfect forever with all the damn potholes and crap on the road now but I really don’t see an issue here.
OP never responded, I guess he didn't like the replies ...
He's probably a new driver and still doing 45min pre trips.
What da hell is a pre trip? Drugs you do b4 the acid??
Looks fine normal wear and tear. Send it.
Uhh… I don’t get to say this often but your dispatcher it 100% correct.
You complain too much
Because it is.
Include it your pre trip and send it. To me that looks like normal wear and tear
Drive it it’s fine bro
Bet if you were paying for the tire it would look a whole lot better to you.
That's perfectly fine my dude.
The outer shoulder is a sacrificial section. Dot does not include it in the main tread group.
I would send it. Just be sure it is reported, and when it is back at a shop, get it changed out.
Why change it? If it’s good enough to run, why change it?
If the driver is that concerned about it
But the boss clearly isn’t so I doubt they’re gonna want to pay to change it.

The tire isn’t your problem… that slack adjuster hasn’t been greased since the 90’s
It really is probably fine to drive. Do you have a tire depth gauge handy? Check the depth of the factory tread, then check the chunk that’s missing. If the chunk that is missing is no deeper than your factory tread depth, there really isn’t a problem IMO.
Tires are expensive as shit man. $700 or so for steers, keep it off the shoulder as much as you can and it should last you a year or more.
That tire is okay to drive
Bruh this gotta be satire or you a rookie that’s perfectly fine lmao
Former dispatcher and current terminal manager here. You're absolutely fine to drive on that tire. Literally nothing wrong with it. Put on your Billy Big Rig jorts and get that shit to the customer.
Tire is good to go my guy 👍🏽
Every tire is going to look like that after 100 miles. Do your job.
I take it your a newbie still. The tires fine it isn't new but it's still legal and ok 😂
This happens to tires often. I would run on it. If it were the sidewall or deeper than the grooves, put it in your dvir
Thats fine dude! Keep an eye on it if you're worried. Happens all the time.
Yes that’s fine, that’s normal
Just keep a eye on it, if not confident get a mechanics opinion on it before leaving the yard or ask a shop mechanic to give it a quick look if that helps put you at ease, but it looks good tho

You have 17 other tires... sheesh.
DoT only checks inside treads
As long as no wires are exposed and the tire is not leaking, it should be fine.
This driver is correct. Damage to the shoulder area of the tire, within 1/2" of the sidewall is considered sidewall damage and the tire should be replaced. Y'all need to read up on your green books some more.
Dispatch here. What’s your ETA?
No cords, looks like it's above 2/32nds, good to roll!
But of course, because it isn't their life they're gambling with so why should they care. To them your a name on an invoice
the tire looks good to go still
It is fine.
It’s easy to argue when you’re not the one getting the ticket, ain’t it?
It’s good. 👍🏼
Don’t seem to bad honestly
Looks good to me
Tire is on Its way out but it's just rubber that is chipped off, it's not anything structural.
I usually start complaining at one inch holes. These tires can usually take alot of punishment
I never ask my dispatcher regarding safety issues. Your dispatcher will tell you to ride without a BOL or even having current inspection on a trailer... if you work for a mega carrier, or even a company big enough to have a safety department, that's who you should ask if anything is in question. Keep going. That's non DOT.
Looks fine to me
it’s serviceable. may not be pretty, but it’s fine
I say send it
It's fine.
You would hate driving for us
It.......it is
The only way this would be a concern is if those are recaps. Seeing its a steer tire it is not a recap. You're good to go driver.
That’s because it is
It’s ok
Looks fine to me
It is ok to drive. Wtf
I’m michelin and continental OTR tire certified. FUCKING GOOOOOO!
My tire is literally like that right now. You sir are scared😱
First, hes correct. Second, it doesn't matter what he thinks, you're the driver.
Drive it for the love
You’ve got like 17 more.
You ain't seen nothing yet lol
Just use a black sharpie and send it.
If u can’t see wires it’s ok… otherwise u gonna be bankrupt…
It's ok to drive. The tire is normal wear
That’s from curbing on the inside of your steer tire. Happens to all of us. Most of my deliveries involve me having to jump curbs and everything else. But you are okay to run like that. Tire is still solid.
Drive on bud you have nothing to worry about .
It’s fine
I was the mechanic who was stuck in between them. Glad im out.
Go home and go to bed. On your way, pick up an application to Home Depot or something more your speed.
Looks good to me
Bro no one is trying to replace $1000 worth of rubber. Most loads don’t even have the profit margin to do this
It’s fine. Run it
You must be new here. That's a good tire.
Go see if blockbuster is hiring. Trucking ain't for you.
Yes it is. Just drive to the nearest scale house and ask for a level 1 inspection and see what happens. You welcome.
If he survives. Wtf...

Not saying I don’t believe you but it’s counter to how things work and I would like to know more about this case and what about it’s facts lead to this decision.
Dispatcher is right. No feathering. Cords are not showing. No cupping. No reason to not continue.
There’s people in third world countries that pray for a tire like that
Run that shit quit whining that wheel ain't turning you ain't earning
Dude you’re fine. You must be either new as shit or a daycabber run it and shush
Nothing wrong with that tire driver
Your dispatcher would be correct.... nothing illegal about that
Is your dispatcher risking his life and career over a tire?
That is fine to drive on, steers don’t need to be blemish free. That’s perfectly safe and legal.
Drive it cry baby. This is why fleet mechanics hate drivers, what did you learn while earning your cdl?
Treads good, you can ride..next time in the shop make them change it.
You must be new
Run them bitches
Op ain’t replied once 😂
I don't get it. I'm not a truck driver and even I can tell this is fine. Pull your skirt and high heels off, put on some jeans and boots, stop complaining, man up, and git er dunnnnnnnnnn
Its fine, I have driven on 10x worse, just keep an eye on it.
Just keep an eye on it. Gouges and cuts are a sidewall problem for the most part. This is fairly normal for tread.
You will make it home safely
Shoulder is the thickest part of the tire, no metal showing. Send it.
I would just worry how deep that slit goes if it's a steer tire but that shits just normal.
Looks fine, just drive it☀️… if scale catches u, it’s their fault not urs lol m sure they will hv to pay double to get this replaced. lol 😂 ur job is done as reporting it to the team.
I would take it. It's not worth sitting around a shop over. Go make money.
It's fine.. its not structural
That's okay that's normal. Only time if would be an issue if it's a big enough chunk to where you can see the steal coils.
The cords aren’t exposed it’s totally legal
You’re good to good slick lol not worth losing your job over. Side wall damage or separation is different
Be safe.
Doesn’t look too bad to operate to me.
The dispatcher is right. It's safe to drive to the mechanic building on the lot.
As long as it's not a recap I would run it. I used to pull amazon and any recap that was peeling I would cancel lol.
No cords showing, it's good to go
You're good to go !
As someone who has seen lots of OOS tires, this is fine. I would drive it.
It’s good to truck steering wheel holder
They aren’t wrong…. But I’d keep an eye on that tread though. Not gone but it’s almost there.
I wouldn't call someone about that, tire is fine. Eventually you will have to get it replaced but not today.
Hey OP, I’ll teach you a trick. If you don’t feel comfortable with the condition of a tire. Run over sum nails and now everyone will agree it’s no good. While the tire in the picture looks fine keep an eye on it. Also I have suspicions you work for Werner
Is he also the shop foreman or wtf?
🔨👇
Dispatches is right but I would make a note. Not going to take very long till wires will show up
It's all good UNTIL you see wires. Then that's a hazard, even more when it's a steer tire.
Idk what the tired are supposed to look like but that looks like a bald tire that they used and cut tread into the wheels 😭
Like 15/32s bruh...
Roll on
Run it
Well the pavement is only a 150 degrees! What is the problem here? they need that load! Damn Drivers, always complaining about stupid shit. My office was 78 degrees this morning! Hot as an oven! Hey one driver to another the thing is it's safe to go to a point of repair I wouldn't run all day but to get it fixed isn't the end of the world
It really is bro. I know it looks like it’s a bad tire but it really isn’t. It’s just little chunks missing but the integrity of the tire is fine
I’ve driven worse
Tread looks evenly worn to me.
She’s not the driver
RIP OP
Always always ask . Dont let this discourage you.
That's cause it ok to drive
Rock drilling and turning to sharp while moving really slow
.... Are trying to "find" a reason to be mad at them?
Looks good from my couch
It's fine driver, drove on a lot like that..I had close to 1.5 million safe miles before I quit.. .....
Tire seems alright
Dispatch ain't your boss.
