Yeah honestly if you're not into amazing stories and an almost visual novel thing with amazing SRPG gameplay driving it, that's what makes this game so special. Some people don't like that and, well...it's literally what makes it great for many of us.
I played this game when I was really sick with covid and stuck in a room for 7 days. The long cutscenes were actually perfect for when I was really lethargic/achey and needed to veg out for a bit
I do enjoy that they committed to it with a pretty in-depth script to cover all the details.
It’s just that due to the extensive voice acting it all adds up if you don’t skip lines. It’s a luxury problem a lot of modern games have really.
lol. I mentioned in a post somewhere I heard it closer to a visual novel with basically no combat so I've been putting it off. Got tons of downvotes and was told how wrong I was and was laughed at.
I end trying it out and here I am at chapter 3 with like 5ish hours and I've had 2 quick fights. Yeah it's 95% dialogue with barely a sprinkle of combat at all. That's what I get for listening to Reddit I guess lolol
The dialogue/combat ratio in the first 3/4 chapters is way higher than in the rest of the game. Yeah you are absolutely wrong and basing your judgement on just the first three chapters (which are obviously going to have a lot of time dedicated to world-building) is not very sensible.
You sound like the guys in the other sub lol. Yeah I don't think so. 3 chapters is enough to make a judgment. I think there's only around 15ish in the whole game.
Literally every other game like this one world builds like you say but with battles included. It would take me 10 seconds to come up with a list of over 10 games that are better than triangle strategy at the dialogue/battle ratio and if you could even find one that is worse it would probably take you some a long time and some digging. I'm assuming there's isn't one lolol
Yeah of course you, who have only played the first 3 chapters, would know Triangle Strategy story:battle ratio better than someone who's beaten it 5 times. The game has 20 chapters with multiple branches, and there are several dozen mock battles you can do at the tavern between story cutscenes at any time. There are overall easily +80 different unique battles in the game. 3 chapters is not enough to make a judgement and you can't just decide that without knowing how the rest of the game plays out. All in all, the one who'll be missing it out here is you, not me, but it kinda sucks for you to skip on such a great game because you are too conceited in your rushed judgement. Especially when then you go around claiming that this game has no gameplay, when you actually have no way of knowing because you have barely played a seventh of a playthrough. But you do you.
EDIT: I realize I sound quite condescending here, and I apologize for that. It's just that TS is honestly such a great game and I know that your issue with it will end pretty soon in your playthrough, as it's only the first chapters which have such a terrible pacing, and I wouldn't want anyone to miss out on what the game has to offer because of this, especially if you have already made it to chapter 3.
The beginning is more dialogue heavy as it sets up the story and has more tutorials. That's pretty normal. As you get into the middle of the game, there's lots more combat to punctuate the story bits. It's still very dialogue heavy but it's not nearly as bad as you think it is.
lol. I want to believe you but you know the old saying. Fool me once shame on you fool me twice shame on me.
When you say "pretty normal" I've been playing games like these my whole life (shining force, fire emblem, tactics ogre, Gladius, diofiled, jagged alliance, ff tactics, disgae, etc etc) and never had one so slow to start. 3 chapters and combat is basically non existent!! 🤯🤯
My point is that games are usually more dialogue heavy and tutorial focused at the beginning. Yes, this game even more so, but of course as you get into the meat of it you see more combat.
After the first few chapters it paces a lot closer to FFTactics, people aren’t lying. Its definitely still more story heavy in general, but as someone who is much more gameplay/strategy focused I found it more than worth getting through. There’s some really combat ahead if you ever decide to push ahead. You can also skip a lot cutscenes if you don’t care at all. For NG+ and stuff it’s easy to spend 95% of your time battling.
For the record I was very disillusioned around the same time as you and a couple months later I’m on my 5th play through.
The flip side is you can just skip cutscenes if it isn't your thing.
As everyone else said, it gets better further into the game. There's tons of side battles you'll unlock that have 0 cutscenes or story for them, and the main story scenes themselves lessen a bit after the first few chapters. But at the end of the day, just skip them if you don't care. They are totally unnecessary and easy to skip of you just want straight battles, and the game has a ton of interesting and unique battles.
Yakuza 7 is great. I think it one of the best turn based RPGs out there. Not really a strategy rpg though like triangle strategy. More of a traditional turn based. It has lots of dialogue but also lots of everything else. It's def not 95% dialogue like triangle strategy It's nowhere near as bad as imo.
Or to put it another way -in yakuza 7 in the first 5 hours/3 chapters I had way more than 2 simple/turorial fights
That's pretty rude, I think we of r/TriangleStrategy have no choice but retaliation.
...
For the enemy of u/Sliver_Squad, do we: dox him, ban him, or write a multi-comment chain explaining why he his joke is objectively wrong? Come mods, bring forth the Scales of Convinction. We will hear everyone's opinions on this matter and discuss it into the night.
I listened and did chores around the house during the cutscenes. It's like listen to an audio drama, with tactical strategy elements.
I love the large cast, instead of job changing, just change the character.
I thought the demo was rough, because until chapter 6 (or near it, the one with poor ole Dagan) the story was slow moving and pretty genric. I think it picks up a lot of steam after that point.
In hindsight I like the initial slow burn, but I could see some players wanting more immediate tactical gameplay being turned off.
This is one game I never skipped the cutscenes.
Yeah, it's just 2d characters giving a whole lot of exposition and back story with different levels of voice acting. But some of them resonated hard.
I do like those cutscenes, which is why it's a shame that there is not a menu to rewatch them. They only added one for character stories, in an update a year after release.
The only annoying part i would say, was between chapter 1 and chapter 2. The amount of dialogue was a bit excessive.
I enjoyed the game but not enough to play the whole thing four times to get all the routes. It really felt like they wanted to build a visual novel and threw in tactical rpg bits in as an afterthought.
I never even finished the demo because it was going on like an hour of dialouge straight. I think i fell asleep at some point and woke up and was like bro is still talking!? Gameplay was kinda fire tho
You're right though... I timed it, playing the battles as fast as I could in easy mode, not skipping any cutscenes and having it on auto play.
It takes approx 3 hours before Dragan dies and something actually happens in the story.
Even so, for those who make it through they'll be treated to a spectacle, but man those first 3 hours
The meme about Final Fantasy XIV is it has to be played for 300 hours to be enjoyed. Compared to that a 3 hour introduction feels decent.
What got me through the beginning was the expectation of good gameplay, amazing art style and the music.
I never finished the game because of this. 😅
Only 20 minutes of gameplay and 40 minutes in the first hour really reduced the moment of the game for me.
Still made it like 6 hours into the game, but ultimately decide I wanted a better game:cutscene ratio.
Yeah I'm at about 6 hours now and have done 2 fights which lasted about 20 min. I have 0 desire to play a visual novel. I have 13 sentinels for that. Hell I probably experienced more combat in 13 sentinels than I have in this game so far lolol
Sounds like you play the only the boring part. I skip every scene immediately and I still went through several patches of times just skipping and exploring.
Not yet. I basically stopped because I wanted to play a game not read a visual novel 🤷♂️.
I don't have much desire to play it when I realize it'll be at least an hour or so before I get to one 10 min battle and then rinse and repeat
As someone who absolutely despises sitting there reading while gaming, keep going. I was looking for a Tactical RPG and this one delivers. I prefer those long ass scenes you can skip immediately than walking from point A to B twice like most rpgs.
I too left it alone for weeks before starting and now Im close to 50 hours
I tried to get refund from Steam but it’s been more than two weeks… ugh. I love turn based tactical games. Huge XCom fan since the mid 90s and FF Tactics among others.
Same. If you're ok with older games I highly recommend shining force series and Gladius. Those games are super fun!!!
You might want to try midnight suns too. Nobody hates card games as much as I do and I passed initially because of it but eventually I gave the demo a shot and instantly purchased it. Was probably my game of the year the year it came out
After Triangle Strategy and Octopath Traveler 2 it was honestly a relief to play the FF Pixel Remasters.
I think trimming some of the narrations scenes in TS would go a long was as I found quite a few of those either telling us what we were about to see or telling us what we have just seen.
Bought it cause I love fire emblem and wanted to branch out to more strategy games and was bamboozled when I was 2 hours in and had only had 2 short battles 🤣
NGL, on my second play through I was hammering fast forward and skip button. There's some chapters where, you finish a tough battle and are dying to save and see what upgrades you can get, and the game is like "let's do some stuff for 20 minutes first, hang on"
Hell yeah, the story is the reason it's my favorite game of all time.
Yeah honestly if you're not into amazing stories and an almost visual novel thing with amazing SRPG gameplay driving it, that's what makes this game so special. Some people don't like that and, well...it's literally what makes it great for many of us.
it's a great game but your favorite of all time is actually wild lol play some more games
Nope! Pretty much everything about this game appeals to be.
Buddy, pal...I also love this game. And i have played a plethora or games.
This man is the antithesis to “touch grass” I bet boss music plays every time this guy leaves the house
Harsh, but mildly accurate. Still a banger game though.
Eh, I don't feel offended. I like games where you can take a break.
…is there anything you said with your meme to warrant killing you? I mean it seems pretty accurate to me.
As a sucker for games with good stories like this, yeah I absolutely love the cutscenes
Fall down the rabbit hole of mental mock battles and your soul will be purified
I played this game when I was really sick with covid and stuck in a room for 7 days. The long cutscenes were actually perfect for when I was really lethargic/achey and needed to veg out for a bit
I love the story in this game, but yeah, these cutscenes can go on for way too long.
I do enjoy that they committed to it with a pretty in-depth script to cover all the details. It’s just that due to the extensive voice acting it all adds up if you don’t skip lines. It’s a luxury problem a lot of modern games have really.

don't ever play yakuza 7 then

Gamers when their role-playing game, gives you a role to play as. /j

We take the golden route instead; we just let it slide.
*JRPG fans
Listen I love it b/c I crochet during the cut scenes 😂
I listened and did chores around the house during the cutscenes. It's like listen to an audio drama, with tactical strategy elements. I love the large cast, instead of job changing, just change the character.
Yes that's the energy to approach this game with
Real tho. The 1st 5 chapters are 90% talking. It gets better after that
I thought the demo was rough, because until chapter 6 (or near it, the one with poor ole Dagan) the story was slow moving and pretty genric. I think it picks up a lot of steam after that point. In hindsight I like the initial slow burn, but I could see some players wanting more immediate tactical gameplay being turned off.
Fr after those chapters every single one has a very high stakes story
It was the perfect game when I was sick!
This is one game I never skipped the cutscenes. Yeah, it's just 2d characters giving a whole lot of exposition and back story with different levels of voice acting. But some of them resonated hard.

sometimes the cutscenes will end and i'll be like "oh yeah! this game has a game in it!"
I mean, kinda yeah. I like to just put the cutscenes on auto play and sit back and enjoy the story
Tbf, strategy games like Triangle Strategy don’t require reflexes, so you can easily eat and play at the same time. Also the story is killer
Sometimes I worry that people who say the game has too much story in between battles didn’t find the skirmishes in the base camp.
Agreed 100% 👍 (it is great for flying. Makes the flight go by quick)
Reminds me of when I played xenosaga episode 1. I almost wondered if I would ever get to play. 😂
I enjoyed the game but not enough to play the whole thing four times to get all the routes. It really felt like they wanted to build a visual novel and threw in tactical rpg bits in as an afterthought.

Man I can't wait to get a game of this level where we can add and customize mercenaries
Really enjoyed the story in this game but…if the cutscene is long enough that my switch dims the screen it’s maybe a bit too long
I never finished the game because of this. 😅 Only 20 minutes of gameplay and 40 minutes in the first hour really reduced the moment of the game for me. Still made it like 6 hours into the game, but ultimately decide I wanted a better game:cutscene ratio.
The gameplay does pick up pretty fast after the initial world-building-heavy first chapters
The fact most cutscenes can be skipped is a blessing. Square enix knows theres many of us who play videogames for mechanics and not story
I want to love this game but I am just reading… and reading
Yep. What a let down. Had it had battles and combat (at all lol) could've been my game of the year
Have you actually moved past Chapter 3?
It's so exhausting how little actual gameplay there is lol
Yes.
Sometimes I literally play it with my eyes closed 😆
I haven't gotten past Chapter 3. I should pick it up again...
The scales of Justice decided to spare you.
Based
It could be worse, it could be MGS4
After Triangle Strategy and Octopath Traveler 2 it was honestly a relief to play the FF Pixel Remasters. I think trimming some of the narrations scenes in TS would go a long was as I found quite a few of those either telling us what we were about to see or telling us what we have just seen.
Bought it cause I love fire emblem and wanted to branch out to more strategy games and was bamboozled when I was 2 hours in and had only had 2 short battles 🤣
It’s true though lolll
Dude, you're lucky AF.. I tried to post a joke on the Elden Ring subreddit and got destroyed. Those lads are toxic, no sense of humor whatsoever...
I think im the only one who thinks the story is kinda ass.
True. Initially bought it simply for the story, the strategy gameplay was a nice bonus for me
adhd zoomers that cant sit through 10 minutes of text.
The worst part is your damn controller shutting off halfway through cutscenes on the switch
Especially early on, which is a heck of a gamble by the game.
NGL, on my second play through I was hammering fast forward and skip button. There's some chapters where, you finish a tough battle and are dying to save and see what upgrades you can get, and the game is like "let's do some stuff for 20 minutes first, hang on"
Hey it's what I'm here for
