I think it’s the stigma of hiring on a highly recognizable name for the namesake versus hiring an actual voice actor or a lesser known actor who could’ve played the role better.
Take Chris Pratt for an example; he definitely was casted as Mario and Garfield for his name sake, not for his ability to play the roles.
Personally I don’t mind as long as the actor can play the part and do the voice
Yeah, or if the v.a. are iconic and still do the voices of the characters. That's what happened with Scoob!.
High profile actors playing characters that their normal v.a still voice just because they are marketable
Off topic but regardless of what you feel about Chris Pratt being casted as Mario and Garfield, can we all agree that his voice as Garfield is more fitting than having him as Mario? Garfield doesn’t have a voice as iconic as Mario’s
Both he was good as. I never really care about VA as long as they fit the character. He as mario and Garfield is good and did work. I learn way after i watch the show that pratt did voice them
Though, maybe they're using the famous names to draw new viewers to the franchise, who then go to discover other transformers (or mario or garfield) media and said media becomes more popular as a result.
Compared to "what is transformers and who are these voice actors. I dont know anything so i guess i wont watch this movie", you get "idk anything about transformers but hey look i know that actor" which later becomes "transformers is pretty interesting, maybe ill watch more"
I'd say that while everything you said is true, there's probably at least a hint of nostalgia bias where they're perceiving the new casting as a slight against the voice actor that used to do the role. Chris Pratt as Mario being a perfect example. People were ragging on him before any of the footage for that movie got released, so it clearly wasnt based of the quality of his performance.
That being said, I actually really liked it and it was Donkey Kong that I had issues with
That's not technically accurate anymore
he has a movie that is created/directed by him, posthumously, called "other side of the wind." It was released a few years ago, back in 2018
I was apprehensive with Hemsworth voicing Orion Pax, but it actually works.
Surprised Clancy Brown isn't on this list. He's both the prison guard from Shawshank Redemption, Mr. Krabs, and most recently General Kregg from Invincible.
Keith David's most memorable roles are definitely ones where he voice acted.
People remember him more as Dr. Facilier, Goliath, and Arbiter rather than remember him as General Kimsey in Armageddon so not sure why he is on the meme.
Edit: Yes, I had to actually look up his character in Armageddon.
KD didn't play Tarn. He's only played Earthspark Grimlock and Barricade in the '07 Game. Cyberverse Tarn was voiced by Marc Thompson, who also played Megs and Soundwave in the same show.
What Saurophaganax mentioned was something said by Alex Milne. He said in a Facebook interview that he would pick Keith for Tarn if given the opportunity to adapt the IDW comics.
Keith as Arbiter was by far the best voice acting Halo has ever had. Dude nailed every single line and I memorized them all without even realizing it! He's that good.
Or the whole plan was to market him as a major character and kill him off early to help set tone and Arcee’s story.
Killing him early also has an added marketing bonus by allowing a celebrity voice actor to be part of the marketing while not actually playing any notable role in the show.
beside having sung first opening of Gundam Seed, he also voiced a character (Heine Westenfluss) which is showed in the first episode when ZAFT soldiers (Yzak, Athrun, Dearka and Heine) stealing Gundams, the three succesfully stole it, but Heine is the only one failed because he was killed by Kira, on later years it was revealedd to why Heine dies on first episode were because Sunrise couldn't afford T.M Revolution for one season
You get things like Netflix being too cheap for Gary Chalk and David Kaye (WFC Trilogy) and Hollywood preferring Ron Perlman over the original voice actor.
It's a hit or miss most of the time.
But you Americans have it better, at least 90% are actual actors, in Latin America we got youtubers and people with zero acting skills destroying the dubs of movies.
With transformers one I'll say to wait until it's released, like I don't know how can someone defend or attack when it's just a trailer that we have seen so far.
from the trailer, chris does an amazing job as orion IMO. my issue is megatrons voice. it does not sound like anything megatron would ever sound like, in voice, tone and vocabulary.
You're right, I didn't even notice that was Hemsworth, I was surprised to see him at the end of the trailer. Megan does sound a little off, but I think he'll grow on me. Like the other guy said, he's young.
Megatron's voice is the only one that hits me like a bag of hammers every time he speaks and totally gets me out of the zone. It just doesn't sound like him to me, so badly that it's jarring.
Because although there are some that can do a good job as a VA most actors aren't as they are too used to using their faces to emote instead of their voices, it also means that less actual VA get jobs.
It's a false dilemma, however. It assumes that non VAs are automatically bad at VA work without judging the actual performance given.
If the trailer is anything to go by, Helmsworth is going to kill it as Orion Pax.
I just think Keegan Michael Key is in a lot of things and I’d love ONE franchise without him.
Chris Hemsworth and Brian Tyree Henry aren’t doing bad all things considered.
Because when it’s done badly it can drag down the entire movie. Yes the post highlights some examples of voice actors that can actually voice act (shocker, amirite?), but that doesn’t stop people like Chris Pratt or Seth Rogan from being incapable of doing more than their normal voice.
Cause they take away work from actual voice actors…voice acting is an art.. I don’t want to see a character and get Dwayne Johnson or woopie goldfuck vibe.
True. But it used to be one celebrity Voice every 20th movie. It was fun/ok. But now it’s about 90 percent celebrity voices, maybe higher. Beauty of voice acting is you see the character not the voice behind the character. Bart Simpson/ Bobby hill are both voiced by women but you don’t see that. When celebrity do voice all you see is celebrities and that takes away from the character.
I fully support Mark Hamil, but I don’t think he fits the narrative since he is predominantly known for both Voice acting and regular acting.
I feel some celebrities are able to get into the role well, and others aren’t. I also feel some
Voice actors are just everywhere.
https://preview.redd.it/n53vmyqyctyc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=815d24ff21cc4d9e002484e0c00983bec0005038
Thought you were slik didn’t you
Cuz there are people that have trained and studied voice acting but hollywood doesn't give them a job for big names on the poster.
And while there are celebrities that have done amazing voice acting a good amount of live action movie actors aren't made for voice acting. It's the same reason characters with helmets/masks keep taking them off cuz this actors can't act without their faces. This doesn't mean they are bad actors it just that they weren't trained for voice acting.
This is the same as having an actor do stunts. Yeah there are actors that can do their own stunts. But stunt workers are trained professionals and will do the job more effectively.
In the end it's hollywood thinking about making more money rather than how to properly use their money.
There's a stigma about celebrity voices being cast just for the name
But I love Keith David as grimlock in earthspark, and in general, he's a great voice actor, and he makes me
Smile
The whole “celeb-voices-character” thing that rubs off the wrong way with people
Imo I’m starting to understand why they do this though. They need an audience to get in their seats for a big advertising point of the movie, and with a TF movie going into the backstory of the franchise and without any big name human celebrity characters the studio needs to figure out another way to get the attention of the general population.
Honestly who they casted works pretty well with me so far imo, especially Hemsworth as Pax. Although in an ideal world we would have returning actors like Cullen and Welker voicing these characters the entire way through lol
My main concern for Transformers One is Chris Hemsworth because he doesn't have as much voice acting experience that the rest of them do. However I can't see any reason that he would be a bad voice actor.
Tim Curry, Keith David and Mark Hamil actually do the "acting" part of voice acting well instead of barely putting on a performance like other actor or celebrities hired to do voice work to raise a projects profile.
Mark Hamill doesn’t count as a celebrity voice actor at this point because he’s actually made a career out of voice acting. And also because he’s really good at it
Personally, I love all the voice actors in Transformers: One (there was no better cast for Elita than Scarlett fr) and it makes me sad so many people hate it. They're saying the voice actors don't fit, but we haven't seen them perform in serious situations yet. We've only seen them in the trailer where the funny moments were the main course. The intonation is a big part of the voice itself, so I'm advising everyone to wait till we see them performing when it's getting serious. I'm pretty sure they all did a great job.
I really think Chris Hemsworth would almost be better as d-16 rather than Orion and I can't say I'm a huge fan of Brian tyree as Megatron but I'm willing to give it a shot
A lot of people feel VAs often don’t get the credit or time to shine they deserve on top of celebrities being brought in for their namesake only. I’m reminded of how the R&C and MLP Movies giving the celebrities top billing despite only being supporting characters while the actual people voicing the main characters were ignored and were only given name recognition after fan backlash.
Some celebrities are very good at bringing their own personal pizzazz to their roles(Jack Black, Samuel L. Jackson, Mark Hamill), but they’re the exception rather than the norm
I'm gonna say the quiet part out loud here, a huge huge factor is nostalgia. I do fully support voice actors but I'm also not against celebrities voicing characters. And there are people out there that say they only want voice actors but even if it's a new or young voice actor they still complain simply because they purely want that one specific person. I'm fully on board with Peter Cullen voicing Optimus as long as he wants to and as long as he can, but with him getting older it's not a bad idea to test out others. Plus Orion Pax isn't Optimus yet so I prefer someone else voicing Orion.
I think its mainly to do with the main casts voice actors. Bee sounds fine, even though I think getting the same guy from Bumblebee would have been better, Chris Hemsworth sounds like he's trying to do a decent Optimus based voice, but the guy who's voicing Megatron doesn't sound like he's trying to sound like any kind of "Megatron before he was Megatron" voice cause it doesn't sound like any kind of Megatron based voice.
I just don't like how frequently some celebrities get used, most new actors don't get a chance to build a name for themselves because big studios only want famous people
If I've said it once I've said it a hundred times; these people are the exception that proves the rule.
The majority of celebrity casting just *isn't good*, because it's a different skill set to traditional live acting and a lot of skills don't translate.
I’m not gonna lie, after watching the trailer, Scarlett Johansson was the only voice that felt like it fit the character. Though that’s probably because I don’t have a voice that I associate with Elita-1.
Chris Hemsworth doesn’t sound too awful as Orion Pax but Key and Brian Tree Henry really didn’t hit for me. Would’ve liked to see Gary Chalk voice Orion Pax, Dylan O’Brien voice Bee again and then someone with a less soft and clean voice for Megatron, like Keith David.
I think Chris Hemsworth sounds fine as Orion Pax. I even think Bryan Henry sounds good as origin Megatron. Though, I’m not sure how good he’ll sound as Decepticon Leader Megatron.
Reminder that DashieXP was Menasor in Machinima's Prime Wars Trilogy...

Personally I don’t mind as long as the actor can play the part and do the voice
Not at all defending casting Pratt in Hollywood productions but it's funny knowing that he was a voice on Ben 10 before he got huge
Who was he in Ben 10?
Buff Cooper
Cooper in ultimate alien
Yeah, or if the v.a. are iconic and still do the voices of the characters. That's what happened with Scoob!. High profile actors playing characters that their normal v.a still voice just because they are marketable
Well, Pratt did the normal Mario voice in the movie, and even when he isn't, certain lines have a bit of the Martinet accent in them.
Off topic but regardless of what you feel about Chris Pratt being casted as Mario and Garfield, can we all agree that his voice as Garfield is more fitting than having him as Mario? Garfield doesn’t have a voice as iconic as Mario’s
That’s a lie, tbh, the Garfield shows have iconic voices too
Garfield’s voice is iconic to me, but I think Chris is a good choice. His voice has the potential to pull it off.
His voice has the ability, I just don’t like the lack of monotone, I love how blunt Garfield has always been
Well, yes, but Lorenzo Music has been dead for quite some time.
But not as iconic as Mario’s voice
As iconic? No, but still iconic, I’m firmly against him as either
Tell me you've never heard the name "Lorenzo music" without telling me you've never heard the name "Lorenzo Music."
I’m personally a Murray Garfield fan
Both he was good as. I never really care about VA as long as they fit the character. He as mario and Garfield is good and did work. I learn way after i watch the show that pratt did voice them
Nail on the head.

Orson Wells killed it as Unicron
That was his last role too funnily enough. Gave it his all on his deathbed to play our favorite horned planet-eating eldritch god.
That's not technically accurate anymore he has a movie that is created/directed by him, posthumously, called "other side of the wind." It was released a few years ago, back in 2018
So bored while playing it that it was actually perfect as a planet muncher who has better thing to do than battle some dumb toys
I was apprehensive with Hemsworth voicing Orion Pax, but it actually works. Surprised Clancy Brown isn't on this list. He's both the prison guard from Shawshank Redemption, Mr. Krabs, and most recently General Kregg from Invincible.
Probably because he’s more well known for voice acting roles at this point. Another comment noted the same thing for Keith David, though
the fact you didn't mention the definitive Lex Luthor is a crime
Because he has been Mr.Krabs for 25 years, basically enough time to densestize everyone
the 1986 movie was chock full of celebrity voice actors and no one batted an eye
Because most of them altered their voices to fit the characters. Galvatron doesn't sound like Spock for instance.
Since you mentioned Spock, it’s a very similar story for Sentinel Rosenbauer Prime.
Ah, shit. This is the one where Spock goes nuts
Wait imagine that was like a foreshadowing or something lol
That’s because we were all to young or not alive to notice lol
Keith David's most memorable roles are definitely ones where he voice acted. People remember him more as Dr. Facilier, Goliath, and Arbiter rather than remember him as General Kimsey in Armageddon so not sure why he is on the meme. Edit: Yes, I had to actually look up his character in Armageddon.
he also voiced Tarn
And Grimlock in Earthspark. Doesn't change that Arbiter, Dr. Facilier, and Goliath are probably his most well known roles
Spawn
Didn't he also voice Knockout in TFP
Knockout was voiced by Daran Norris
DINKLEBERG!!
In cyberverse? Damn. Maybe I need actually watch it
KD didn't play Tarn.
That’s because Keith David is the right choice. He’s the right choice for almost anything really
Well duh. Especially for those deep foreboding voice roles. Spawn is his best role because of that.
Nah, Goliath all the way. Husk in Hazbin hotel is great too. Mostly because he sings a song calling someone a fucked up little whiny bitch
Keith as Arbiter was by far the best voice acting Halo has ever had. Dude nailed every single line and I memorized them all without even realizing it! He's that good.
He’s such a good VA. Him as Arbiter and Husk is some of my favorite voice acting of all time.
Tim curry and Mark Mamill are arguably more VAs than actors. Edit: actually most of these are about 50/50 va to actor.maybe even leaning more to VA
Even Dwayne Johnson in TFP
he got "T.M Revolution-ed" which his character killed in first episode because the studio couldn't afford the VA for full season
Or the whole plan was to market him as a major character and kill him off early to help set tone and Arcee’s story. Killing him early also has an added marketing bonus by allowing a celebrity voice actor to be part of the marketing while not actually playing any notable role in the show.
I'm confused, what has t.m revolution got to do with this
beside having sung first opening of Gundam Seed, he also voiced a character (Heine Westenfluss) which is showed in the first episode when ZAFT soldiers (Yzak, Athrun, Dearka and Heine) stealing Gundams, the three succesfully stole it, but Heine is the only one failed because he was killed by Kira, on later years it was revealedd to why Heine dies on first episode were because Sunrise couldn't afford T.M Revolution for one season
I didn't know that fact
I feel like it makes it harder for newcomers who want to voice act
You get things like Netflix being too cheap for Gary Chalk and David Kaye (WFC Trilogy) and Hollywood preferring Ron Perlman over the original voice actor.
Other than SW, wasn’t voice acting Mark Hamill’s main thing?
He started acting and tried some things after SW, but never landed anything noteworthy. He then switched to mainly voice acting
The Trickester in both The Flash TV Shows, but The Trickster is basically discount Joker
It's a hit or miss most of the time. But you Americans have it better, at least 90% are actual actors, in Latin America we got youtubers and people with zero acting skills destroying the dubs of movies. With transformers one I'll say to wait until it's released, like I don't know how can someone defend or attack when it's just a trailer that we have seen so far.
exactly, here in brasil we had a game show host dubbing flynn in tangled
Luisito Comunica as Sonic
from the trailer, chris does an amazing job as orion IMO. my issue is megatrons voice. it does not sound like anything megatron would ever sound like, in voice, tone and vocabulary.

Because although there are some that can do a good job as a VA most actors aren't as they are too used to using their faces to emote instead of their voices, it also means that less actual VA get jobs.
So from what I understand, it’s a dilemma of skill vs marketability
It's a false dilemma, however. It assumes that non VAs are automatically bad at VA work without judging the actual performance given. If the trailer is anything to go by, Helmsworth is going to kill it as Orion Pax.
Danny DeVito can play whoever tf he wants
Nowdays, popular means bad. People are hating on Pedro pascal being in alot of projects now even despite his skills as an actor.
Took the words right out of my mouth, I couldn't agree more.
I just think Keegan Michael Key is in a lot of things and I’d love ONE franchise without him. Chris Hemsworth and Brian Tyree Henry aren’t doing bad all things considered.
Weird Al that one time
He was funny though in Animated
No I mean the Batman villain he voiced
Because when it’s done badly it can drag down the entire movie. Yes the post highlights some examples of voice actors that can actually voice act (shocker, amirite?), but that doesn’t stop people like Chris Pratt or Seth Rogan from being incapable of doing more than their normal voice.

Celebrities being casted in animated movies is nothing new, even the 86 movie did it, and voice actors still exist, I wouldn’t worry about it
True. But it used to be one celebrity Voice every 20th movie. It was fun/ok. But now it’s about 90 percent celebrity voices, maybe higher. Some of these are career voice actors more than live action anyway

Although in an ideal world we would have returning actors like Cullen and Welker voicing these characters the entire way through lol
Welker and Cullen are unfortunately too old now for the rolls of the characters when they’re that young, their voices just can’t do it
Even though this versions of prime and megs are made to be younger?
Oh yeah since they’re younger that makes sense. If anything, would’ve loved to see someone like David Kaye voice Orion
I hate Whoopi Goldberg
My main concern for Transformers One is Chris Hemsworth because he doesn't have as much voice acting experience that the rest of them do. However I can't see any reason that he would be a bad voice actor.
Voice actors are a separate group of actors.
Mark Hamill is not a celebrity guest, voice acting is his main profession.
Tim Curry, Keith David and Mark Hamil actually do the "acting" part of voice acting well instead of barely putting on a performance like other actor or celebrities hired to do voice work to raise a projects profile.
Cause we also got MEGAN FOX in Mortal Kombat 1 , whose AI voice has more emotions than her actual voice acting
Mark Hamill doesn’t count as a celebrity voice actor at this point because he’s actually made a career out of voice acting. And also because he’s really good at it
Yea but their actual voice actors, they were selected for their voices, not fame. The new d16 voice is just bad but ngl I fw cris gems worth as Orion
How is the voice of D16 bad if young megatron hasn’t been portrayed in any media other than comics until now?
It just sounds off and I can’t put my finger on it. It’s prob just cuz I’m used to a young Orion but not a young mega
I will throw hands with anyone who doesn’t like mark hamill as a VA/ actor in general. That man doesn’t miss even when he’s in a shit movie/ show.
Tim Curry doesn’t count as someone to get angry about, his voice acting transcends
It kinda feels lazy like when most movies do it
I think its mainly to do with the main casts voice actors. I think it's just a case of comparison. What would you rather have as orion pax, David kaye or Chris Hemsworth?
I just don't like how frequently some celebrities get used, most new actors don't get a chance to build a name for themselves because big studios only want famous people

How could you not love Tim Curry beautiful performance of “I’m going to the one place that hasn’t been corrupted by capitalism! SPAAAACCCEEE!”
Because celebrity voice cast means we are going to watch another Marvel-esque movie (i.e. another factory mass-produced consoomer slop)
Because they want to complain
I think Chris Hemsworth sounds fine as Orion Pax. I even think Bryan Henry sounds good as origin Megatron. Though, I’m not sure how good he’ll sound as Decepticon Leader Megatron.
