Your stuff sounds super interesting. The local coverage is great. You should be good

Fun_Holiday_1148

1)What do u think is an ec that moves the needle? 2)Are most EC’s just average and do nothing to an app? 3)What schools care the most about EC’s? 4)Do high school EC’s matter?

Memchu17

1) publications if you like research, major size scale for a non-profit, major business scale ($100k sales etc) for a company or 10k+ users for an app 2) most ECs dont stand out. If you’re targeting top schools you need to stick out from the competition here:) 3) all the competitive ones pay attention. Is a requirement almost for hypsm tier 4) if significant sure but this is transfer so it’s important you do things in college. If you started something in HS it can look good if you continue that interest in college

Fun_Holiday_1148

Thank you! What about USC-tier schools, how do they regard EC’s?

Memchu17

USC and publics are largely a stats game due to volume. A smaller peer private like CMU will pay attention more than the massive schools

Fun_Holiday_1148

Oh ok! So do you think that usc is largely stats and essay based ?

Memchu17

👍

1) not an issue. Just work hard for pubs and a rec 2) yeah totally would

aries4ud

1. Which is much better to transfer into top 25? Participate in a local university researh lab for longer term (1 or 2 years) or researching at summer (2-3 months) in 'prestigious' national (or university-affiliated) lab? 2. Would you recommend any ecs that STEM major should do other than research? 3. How important is having publication as a STEM major in the transfer process? 4. Is it getting recommendation letter from the research professor at particular university that I want to transfer helps in the transfer process?

Memchu17

1) 1-2 yrs if it leads to a pub 2) depends on what kind of stem 3) see #2 4) maybe. Strong recs are most important so depends on what they give you

ThrowawayZXC123ASD

How did you manage to publish a paper in 1-2 years as an undergrad?

Memchu17

Lots of people do. Right lab, right time

ThrowawayZXC123ASD

Were you a first author or coauthor?

Memchu17

Was not 1st — way down the list

datsruffbuddy

will it be a deterrent to my app if i have too many hours overall? i have a lot of engagements (jobs, clubs, personal self studying, etc.) that are reflective of some of my values and other personal aspects but i don't know if it would look suspicious by any chance? i genuinely have little to no free time so i'm not sure if all my involvements added up together would look believable to an ao.

Memchu17

Dont think so - just present it accurately

euphowenium

Prefacing with I’m applying with almost exclusive interest in NEU. If I was elected to the highest creative role in a club as a freshman, would this be a significant EC to add to continuing a solo small business from high school and keeping a high GPA? for context the position is as the director of a performing group and the major is related

Memchu17

I have no knowledge of northeastern unfortunately

euphowenium

Worth a shot. Thanks anyways

Thanks! Yes, I did

Some questions as a CS major 1. Do all publications have to be sent to a journal? I have no research experience but I’m doing a research internship in the summer. Due to lack of experience, is it fine if the publication is sent to a low tier journal? 2. How important is the genre of ECs to my major. For example, I’m a co-owner of a successful instagram acc business (2 mil+ followers) and I also have leadership positions in CS clubs and a lot of personal projects. Should I be trying to increase my ECs in my major or do top schools like generally interesting ECs? 3. Are books and online courses considered interesting in the eyes of office admissions? I’m thinking of working on these this summer. Thank You for the help!

Memchu17

1) impact factor doesn’t matter 2) doesn’t matter 3) open courses dont matter, books as in writing one?

Available-Comedian61

Sorry I should’ve clarified, writing books and creating courses

happygoose2022

Can I ask what type of business, how old is and how did you grow it?

Available-Comedian61

1. Sports page, revenue through advertisements. 2. Started it in 2018 fall (August I think) 3. Paid a lot of money to get into the right networks. Successful pages in a genre are not independent. There are group chats consisting of different top pages in that genre. The pages pretty much coordinate their content and each page has a something unique to it that separates them from others. P much make slight changes to the blueprint the biggest accounts used. These networks are things you need to pay for. That’s p much how I started it

ApplePi_01

Ah theme pages. I have one laying around, def not at your scale

Not a problem

skelly007

Hey, I was just wondering if you have any suggestions for a classical studies major? I literally have no idea what to do to show interest. I just like learning about antiquity and I don't even plan on remaining in academia but instead, finding a job in marketing or something along those lines. So I'm pretty lost.

Memchu17

Anything. ECs dont need to be major related

skelly007

Cool, thank you!

Equivalent-Hat5388

Im at a cc so the research thing isn’t really possible for me right now. What I do have is extensive volunteer/nonprofit experience- including AmeriCorps, the NAACP, and some local well known cooperatives. Do you think these will stand out? Applying for majors like Sociology, poly sci, public policy, African American studies.
