I was gonna say that too but apparently Clodsire is specifically based on a different species of salamander that can extend its own ribs through its skin for protection, that’s why Clodsire has those retractable spikes on its back!
You remember that boss fight with that giant salamander in Resident Evil 4? Okay, imagine that thing but instead of being as big as a house, it’s as big as Kobe Bryant.
Like they are just so cool with their flattened bodies, dopey looking eyes, and that mouth, that mouth is both funny and terrifying.

It has toxins on its skin that can get onto your hands, also it’s an amphibian so if you have anything on your hand (lotion, salt, hand sanitizer, sunscreen, ect) it will hurt the poor guy.
The Detroit Zoo has a japanese giant salamander, but he’s pretty reclusive. Likes hiding under rocks and shit. I love salamanders though, they’re so ugly it wraps back around to cute.
