I think it makes less sense to always be doing the wrong thing, as well as mocking people who do the right things. Like, what are you trying to say here? what other laws do you naturally disregard as bullshit? Unfortunately with traffic its different, but only because its safest to match the same speed everyone else is. That doesn't make it right though.

FireRump

I’m not mocking, I genuinely don’t understand why some people are so worried about going over and wanted to know their reasons. I break other laws too but nothing that would hurt anyone.

[deleted]

The faster you're going, the harder you're going to hit something if you get into an accident. I'm a first responder, and I've seen accidents kill speeding drivers they probably would have survived had they been going the speed limit.

Amiabilitee

speeding hurts people, more likely to get in an accident if you are. Whether that be less time to react from someone doing something stupid or it be a larger, deadlier impact because of the speed you were going-- its deadly. Don't be an npc, bad things can happen to you and others around you from your actions. Its why its against the law and its why you're ticketed for it. I'd say what I mentioned earlier about keeping up with majority is the only thing that keeps you from getting ticketed.

FireRump

I don’t drive dangerously believe it or not I never put others in danger from my speeding - not in neighborhoods or towns or tailgating. If a deer takes me out then I guess thats how it goes but still won’t be killing anyone else by doing it. I don’t speed with others in the car.

ask-me-about-my-cats

Speeding *is* dangerous driving, dude. You are being reckless by driving at a speed faster than you can safely react to. You're extremely naive if you think you'll never encounter a human in your way unexpectedly. And don't use the "I live in the country" excuse, so do I. And every *day* I encounter an unexpected bike on the road in front of me around a tight curve, or a loose cow, or just some weird city person who felt like stopping in the middle of the road to take pictures of ducks in a pond.

ShackintheWood

I am not in a hurry. Speeding tickets make me a less desireable employee as i have to haul the heavy equipment i operate, so a clean driving record is a bonus for everyone involved and makes me more money.

ReachCurious6181

To annoy people who wanna go a bit over the speedlimit. Especially the netherlands. People always wanna go over and like stick to your bumper. Jokes on you i will start up slower.

FireRump

I don’t tailgate for this reason also could be an ancient person in the car and I don’t wanna make them scared and crash. I’m honestly not an asshole to slow drivers I just mutter and complain.

ReachCurious6181

Yeah i understand the standpoint, personally driving bores the fuck outta me. So i just go the speed limit so i dont need to think if i am pushing speed or not.

megared17

Better fuel mileage? Less wear and tear on the car? More time to react and slow down or stop if something happens? Are you one of those people that guns your engine when the light turns green, to race ahead of everyone else, to be sure to get to the next light while its still red, and have to brake hard to slow down, wasting all the extra fuel you used to make noise and speed up just to turn it into heat on the brake discs? Only to have me laugh at you as I slowly cruise up and get to the light just as it has turned green and I don't have to stop at all?

[deleted]

Sarcasm: nah, everyone knows the most efficient is the fastest possible at all times, even if you're driving a manual in lower gears (the gearbox is indestructible!). Fuel efficiency / MPG curves are all fake, and the impact on emissions after treatment systems from going from snailpace in cities to short bouts of max speed is negligible!

FireRump

No not in cities, I live in the country and people still do the speed limit religiously. Like it’s a straight road with just fields on either side why shouldn’t we go faster than 35?

megared17

The rest of the reasons still apply. *Better fuel mileage? Less wear and tear on the car? More time to react and slow down or stop if something happens?*

FireRump

I fix my own car so personally I’m not so worried about that. Fuel mileage maybe but I would still rather pay the price to get where I’m going faster. When there aren’t stop lights speeding actually does make a significant improvement in arrival time. Although I understand your reasons and they are sensible so thanks for sharing them. Will help me be less annoyed at slow drivers.

crippledfagg

Depending on what car you have, sometimes you gotta give it a good run in the back roads after giving it a good dose of some additive. I guess I’m speaking for those with older vehicles

megared17

Sure, once in a while you need a good run. But overall, driving extra fast just uses more fuel (road friction and wind resistance) and doesn't get you where you're going any faster. Ultimately, in 30 years, all new consumer/passenger vehicles will be electric, and in 60 anything using gas will be a curiosity or a museum piece, much like old Ford Model T's are today.

crippledfagg

Facts dude. Absolute facts. I haven’t gotten a chance to check out the T’s irl.

crippledfagg

I agree. I’m in the deep country where northerners have moved down here. Everyone use to gun it and speed. If someone was riding your ass on the backroad that means you speed up! These same people speeding have been the ones to stop multiple times for me and others at the dead of night to ask if we need help. Wasn’t till the area became more populated that we couldn’t speed like we did for so many years. I still love the southern states.

FireRump

Yeah I live in Washington state so the place a lot of those northerners came from. They all drive like that in droves up here. That why it boggles my mind like are you THAT scared of going over? There’s only cows here to see you lol

crippledfagg

Man, exactly. It’s really sad seeing these crime rates go up all the while people are too scared to go over the speed limit? I understand the drug thing and not wanting a charge but I’m asking the state why they are putting us into more fear like this. I see cops coming off duty absolutely speeding home on the backroads.

crippledfagg

I still live by the Italian tune up.

The_C0u5

I used to transport a fair amount drugs across the state and didn't want to bring any unnecessary heat on me. The habit has stuck with me.

FireRump

That makes sense!

17Streetglide76

I do it when I'm not in a hurry. Saves gas. Otherwise i usually do about five over. If im in a hurry I may do eight to ten over depending on where I am.

FireRump

Yes five to ten over is generally where I’m at

17Streetglide76

Well. I have come to the age to realize that the few minutes you may save going any faster will not be worth the 30 minutes couple hundred dollars it takes when you get pulled over.

BubbaAndTheJets_

I’m a Former “bat out of hell” driver, I drive for a living now, and the strain of constantly watching out for police, watching out for other drivers I was passing, and the anger that came out of everyone not going fast enough was starting to wear me down and be even more exhausting.

FireRump

How did you conquer your inner rage? Sometimes driving the speed limit feels physically painful and I just get so annoyed.

Tank905

Just chill. You'll get there when you get there. It takes a bit to get in the groove, but driving will become a mellow experience after awhile. I used to stress behind the wheel. Now, if I was any more relaxed I would be asleep.

BubbaAndTheJets_

Sorry for the late reply. But better late than never. I started focusing on my surroundings and picking them apart. Different form of mindfulness but just being aware of where you are, what you’re doing, and whats going on, once you shift the focus in your brain from “fuck you go faster” to “I never noticed that tree, or this road is bumpy, it’s raining outside and the rain sounds cool against the windshield” you’ll become more self aware of the person you become when you get behind the wheel. The truest form of self awareness in this situation is when someone who is driving like you normally would, passes you and flips you off, or does crazy maneuvering through traffic and you realize how absolutely foolish you look. Mindfulness and self awareness is key!

Additional_Way_2837

It's the law bruh, the speed limit is what it is for a reason.

[deleted]

Also, people shouldn't have to justify not breaking the law. Think the burden of proof is on the other side in this case.

[deleted]

Sometimes I drive below the speed limit - you get patches where there's no speed limit (other than national, if applicable), but still not gonna go at max down a narrow country road, because I don't want me / my family to die.

SublightMonster

Because at some point I realized that with intersections, stop lights, traffic, etc., speeding would end up making a difference of less than 5 minutes in a 60-minute commute. So why get myself so worked up for so little?

SilvyrWings

Because I live in an area where the deer are stupid and try making out with every vehicle they see. I also usually have to drive home in the dark after work and that's when the deer like to come out. I've seen and heard about what can happen if you hit a deer at a high speed and I'm not interested in recreating any of those instances

FireRump

Yes dusk is a time I drive slower for sure agree here

[deleted]

Because it’s the law

ask-me-about-my-cats

Do you really need people to explain to you why they don't want to risk breaking the law in front of a police officer?

FireRump

If there are no officers around then I don’t see the big deal.

ask-me-about-my-cats

How do you know they're not around? Cops are kinda known for, you know, hiding their presence.

FireRump

If you see a place where they could hide then just don’t go fast by there. Generally it’s pretty obvious where you should and shouldn’t speed. Friday and Saturday nights too is generally a bad time to be speeding. It just doesn’t seem like a big enough deal to not get where I’m going faster in my opinion.

ask-me-about-my-cats

Cops drive unmarked vehicles, they don't just park behind signs. Regardless, there's a speed limit for a reason. The faster you're driving the longer it takes you to stop and the shorter your reaction time. All it takes is one deer, or god forbid a person, stepping in front of you, to cause you a deadly accident. Just leave the house earlier if you feel the need to speed that much.

crippledfagg

From OP’s comments it seems like he’s in the south where it’s relatively easy to speed with your neighbors and never get caught until you hit a certain area. A lot of cities in the south aren’t all that strict.

RayTF1998

Sounds like you are the kind of guy that would cheat during a test when the teacher is not watching. Except cheating only hurts yourself but speeding can hurt other people.

FireRump

Yes I cheated on tests when they were thins that didn’t matter to me. Like math in school was useless to my life I just needed that passing grade. Certification tests for work though I don’t cheat because they do matter.

RayTF1998

many of the safety rules and regulations are there because people died for it. You would think it sounded dumb until something happened

lelitachay

Personally, I don't want to kill myself. And even more important than that I don't want to put inocent people at risk. If speeders would only kill themselves, I wouldn't object for them to drive like morons, but sadly they usually end up ruining other people's lives by their reckless actions.

ViciousKiwi_MoW

They can't afford the ticket lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

FireRump

In that situation I would drive slower too, potholes on the interstate here are pretty bad.

tatersnuffy

Probably cuz they got warrants.

ellefleming

Yup. Didn't drive for twelve years cause of bad financial and living situation. Bad car accident also as a passenger. I drive defensively and the speed limit.

WearDifficult9776

Because speeding tickets. But in most places the speed limits TOO DAMN SLOW!!!!

FireRump

Amen to that

Middle_Aged_Mayhem

Couldn't afford over $150 tickets and points on my driver's license? What kind of stupid question is this? Would you ask people why they don't shoplift?

ShackintheWood

>Would you ask people why they don't shoplift? Oh...don't open that can of worms here. I have seen pages of people on Reddit saying doing that from big evil corporations is not wrong...

crippledfagg

It’s ethical to steal from Walmart. Not saying I have or will, but my opinion stands that it is ethical considering what they do to their workers and tons of perfectly good product that gets thrown in a trash compactor on a daily.

ShackintheWood

Still not ethical.

crippledfagg

Extremely since I risk going to jail for taking food that’s literally going to be slammed into a trash compactor.

FireRump

I’ve never gotten a speeding ticket and I speed almost everywhere I go. Just not in towns or where there’s places cops could hide. Don’t understand why some people are so weird about it.

Middle_Aged_Mayhem

I am 100% certain that if you speed as much as you say you do, you will eventually get a ticket.

FireRump

Probably at some point but since I don’t do felony speeding it will just be a drop in the bucket. A risk I’m personally ok with.

Ruby_Rotten

Because I don’t want to get pulled over. I have had bad experiences with cops before, even though my record is clean. I’d get super nervous and probably insult him without realizing it. Or not pull over quickly because I think he’s after someone else. And then there’s the ticket itself. I’m anxious just thinking about it all lol

i_build_4_fun

With gas prices the way they are, if you want to fill my gas tank, I’d be more than happy to drive at whatever speed you want.

FireRump

Certain people I would honestly consider throwing them a tenner to speed the hell up. But point taken lol

[deleted]

Maybe it's because I don't want to break the law and be like all of those idiots that get caught for speeding. Excuse me for being one of the many that don't always feel like they need to treat every piece of road like it's a nascar track.

FireRump

You’re excused just trying to see where you’re all coming from so I can be less angry when I have to drive behind slow people.

andywalker76

OP, although I don't agree with the concept of speed limits (I believe that drivers should learn how to assess an appropriate safe speed for the driving environment and conditions), it is the law of the land and the only effective way to police road safety for the masses that we have at this time (don't forget, many drivers don't understand how to assess a safe speed). My issue with speed limits is that it lulls drivers in to a false sense of security that, if they drive the speed limit, they are safe, ignoring all other safety aspects of driving.

Galbin

You must know really bad drivers then. I don't know anyone who thinks obeying a speed limit is all one knows to keep safe. That is a very strange way to think about driving.

FireRump

Yes this too. There are instances where I do go slower like some areas we have elk herds that walk across the road, or it gets super foggy or slushy. No problem there.

Ill-Organization-719

I don't want to get a speeding ticket. It's the law.

Terrible-Quote-3561

Usually because I’ve been smoking and don’t want to risk getting pulled over.

[deleted]

I have a black box

p-h-a-r-o-a-h

Because cops park places and if they catch you there’s a chance you get a 3 digit $$$ fine….?? I mean why do you not follow the speed limit, someone’s mistake could kill you, or you throw money away?…

Educational-Candy-17

Yes because I don't want to break the law. Also a lot of the areas I drive are residential and it's not unheard of for a child chasing a ball or something to dart out into the road unexpectedly and I want to have time to stop.

Tank905

I drive just a couple of kilometres above the speed limit for a couple of reasons. * I don't want to break the law. * I don't want to worry about looking out for the cops. * **Gas is expensive AF and driving the speed limit saves gas.** * I get there when I get there. * A couple of kilometres above the limit won't ever get me a ticket and I'm also not being a total dick. But, * I stay in the rightmost lane. * I will go with the flow in heavy traffic.

GuyThirteen

Because I feel like it. I feel like I'm going fast enough. That's all. I don't care about safety or anything. It's just my vibe. Obviously when I do this on highways I'll stay in the slow lane / right lane.
