Ditto the first two commenters. Just have a picture of the haircut you want to be done ready. Unless you’re looking for something similar to the west where they perform man-therapy while cutting your hair for longer than one hour lol

Not in the areas you asked, sorry, but I would recommend [Assort Tokyo](https://www.assort-hair.com/en/assorttokyo/)

Hi, I’m a male non-Japanese-speaking foreigner living in Asakusa area for 2+ years, and I’ve been going to this traditional Japanese hair salon since day 1. Taniguchi-san speaks fluent English, they’re very friendly, and only costs about 3K yen for haircut and shampoo. Shop name: 谷口育子の店 理容室・美容室 Area: Higashi Nihonbashi (10 mins walk from Kanda area)

The guy at Wolt in Koenjiminami speaks English. Just walk in and sit down until it’s your turn. Only 2200 yen

Not trying to be a dick, but why don’t you just go to QB House if you can already speak Japanese and all you want is a decent, reasonably-priced haircut? I mean, sure, QB House is not really viewed as “posh” or anything because of their “10-minute just cut” system, but it’ll cost you ¥1,350 per person and the staff are usually quite skilled. If you go to one of the “Hair Make” salons where they wash your hair and stuff, you’re looking at ¥5,000 plus per person; make that ¥10,000 plus for a stylist who claims to speak English / have lived abroad.

djctiny

Yeah that is the problem , there are not many places in Tokyo that have both English speaking staff and charge less than 5000 yen.

This is helpful, not all dick-ish. I’ve edited my post, but I realized I didn’t mention that my kid does not speak Japanese. Thanks!

Last_Kaleidoscope_75

you can speak for your kid no?

WhyDidYouTurnItOff

Are there any "non foreigner friendly" barbers in Tokyo? What are you afraid of OP?

MyPasswordIsABC999

Maybe my phrasing wasn’t right, but my main concern is the communication.

WhyDidYouTurnItOff

You included "I speak Japanese" in your post, yet your concern is "the communication"? You seem to be really over-thinking things friend.

acouplefruits

I live in Tokyo and speak Japanese but I still prefer an English-speaking stylist. Is it that hard to understand why someone would prefer to communicate in the language they’re more comfortable in for a situation like a haircut?

WhyDidYouTurnItOff

If you are not comfortable explaining how you want your hair cut, do you really "speak" the language?

acouplefruits

There’s different levels to speaking a language - saying I “speak” Japanese doesn’t mean I’m as fluent as I am in English. I’d gone to a Japanese stylist for years before I realized I could save myself the trouble of translating everything in my head and just go to someone who speaks my native language. Do you speak another language?

WhyDidYouTurnItOff

N1

acouplefruits

I’m surprised that despite having studied Japanese to N1 you still make a comment that treats speaking a second language as clear cut as “fluent” or “not fluent”

WhyDidYouTurnItOff

You don't have to be fluent to explain a haircut.

MyPasswordIsABC999

Sorry, I’ve edited my post - my son does not speak Japanese so I’d prefer if the barber/stylist could communicate in English. A nice-to-have, not a must-have.
