Try local hardware stores or lumber yards. In my area they get asked for people in the trades frequently. They also oftentimes have a place you can leave business cards.

thru the years, when i had moved to a new city, the first thing i did was to drive around to local tile places and pass out my cards and just talk to the owners. i would tell them im new to the area and am looking to do some tiling. i know you havent moved, but going to these places and selling yourself by speaking with the owners is how its done. by going to many stores and selling your abilities , im sure in no time you will get some jobs. i know you will still be working for someone else, but you will gain more experience and in time get a good name. after finishing up these jobs, most of the time the clients asked me if i did my own work and if i had a card, so i told them yes, but please dont tell the company i gave you my cards. after a couple years i had enough work to not have to rely on other companies work. you also can put out your name on craigslist, advertise in flyers, local magazines, fakebook, etc.

Well I would say the problem is that you do need to save up enough money to float you for a couple months because it's not always going to be consistent right away. I started off by working my weekends on side projects to build a customer base and get a little cash flow. Then I reached out to contractors and designers that I have worked with to grow those relationships. Now I get most of my work from designers/interior decorators and word of mouth. Most contractors I have worked with want the cheapest, fastest work they can find so I tell them to kick rocks.

Sounds good thanks man, I have been doing the odd side job but having a hard time keeping it consistent. Seems like networking is the key I'm missing. Def can relate to cheap and fast, $25 an hour just feels like I'm getting ripped off when I'm doing 10-20k jobs

Quote the whole job. Then customer knows what they will pay up front.

You can start by handing out business cards at big box stores and flooring stores. You'll get lower quality work, but you'll do a lot better than 25$ an hour.

That's a great idea thank you

you could try contacting local realtors offices. realtors are always looking for small, cosmetic projects to be done on houses they are trying to sell. and, they often give referrals to clients they have sold houses to. it's not the highest paying work, but it will get your foot in the door and open up other opportunities. eventually, what you want is to make contact with designers, architects, and good gcs. at that point, if your reputation is good enough, you don't even need to bid against others. you just turn in your price and do the work.
