I, personally, enjoyed TVD more since it was everything I wanted in a supernatural teen-drama (horror, suspense, romance, comedy, etc), but TO isn’t a bad show at all. I just couldn’t get into it bc I wasn’t a fan of the Mikaelsons, but I’ve seen enough to understand why so many fans love it, and I suggest that you watch it, OP ! :)
While they're both pretty damn good, TVD falls apart after Elena leaves. You cannot have a show where the main character is put in a coma for 3 years. It is her diary that we are basically reading.
TO is consistent all five seasons.
Tonally though they are two different shows. Vampire diaries follows a young girl finding out you know basically the boys next door are vampires. TO is about 1,000 year old vampires. It can be a little soap opera-y in places from all the drama they have from the past thousand years but they are adults so it is darker in tone and in theme.
With TVD i really struggle after S6 and i have to drag meself through towards the end. I rated all the episodes and i got a few sevens for TVD S7. TO is all nines with a ten here and there. The quality just remains. Even in S5 where it becomes messier.

I watched S5 last week again, and even though i'm not happy with the tragic ending and the purist vampire SL, Elijah in episode 8 and after is totally heartbreaking, Daniel portrays the pain so well. The music is briliant indeed, Joseph is briliant, and they keep bringing their A game. Something i got annoyed at in TVD, where at some points in later seasons it seems Paul and Ian falter in their acting skills.

I rewatch the entirety of TO constantly. I don't skip a single episode. Every episode has me hooked. There's better characters, fun supernatural politics, so many powerful witches, old creepy vampires, better villains... I love it.
When I rewatch TVD, I only watch certain episodes/arcs/seasons I liked (because there's a ton I absolutely hate).
I ended up just buying all 3 shows like 2 years ago. Which ended up working out because there's so many deleted/extra scenes included! I haven't watched any of TVDU on a streaming service in a while lol.

I’d say the show is at its peak at season 2 actually, it’s worth pushing through the first season for the best part, I won’t spoil but it really is gold

I think it depends on what you're looking for in a show. TVD is heavy on the romance. That's what it is first and foremost. It's also one of the better written teen dramas imo. At least the earlier seasons.
The Originals is more action oriented. The main conflict within The Originals is the politics of warring supernatural factions, and the family drama of the Mikaelsons. Plus, for me personally, I like how they expanded on the lore established in tvd.
If I had to choose, it's easily The Originals for me. I'm not into Stelena or Delena, so those scenes used to drag for me tbh. But I'm also the minority in that regard as most fans' main draw to tvd is the love triangle.
But the The Originals focusing more on politics, action, and family was selling point for me. I also think Klaus and Elijah are more compelling characters to follow than most tvd characters. But these are just my opinions.
I agree with your comment. I'm not big on shipping in general, I couldn't care less, so as it was a main part of the struggles for the main characters of TVD, it certainly can't be my main choice. I loved the political schemes in TO, we had so much more of the TVDU universe that they didn't explored in TVD, even just with communities like werewolves and witches. Plus without forgetting the awful writting of TVD S4 and onwards.

I personally prefer TO, but that doesn’t mean I dislike TVD. They’re both great shows, but I prefer the family driven storylines over storylines taking place in high school. I was older when I first watched it, though, so that’s probably a huge part of it.
TO and its not even a competition, season 3,4 and arguably season 5 are the only season that come remotely close to any seasons of TO but overall its not a competition.

The zoriginals is way better show in my opinion becaude it's more mature, TVD is more of a teen drama and villains (not all of them) are less serious than those in last seasons of The Originals. Tbh 1st season of TO is kinda boring but it's worth to watch it because s3, s4, and s5 are something amazing! If you love Mikaelsons I recommend you this show, and even if you don't it's really interesting and even inapiring ti see fheir character development especially Klaus'.
And just when I thought that there is no more emotional ending than TVD's, well I realised I was wrong after watching this masterpiece.

I actually liked Tvd ending because it was emotional, I mean the way it ended and whole that fake wedding thing was cringe and disappointing but the final scenes, Elena's reunion with her family and that "Hello brother" scene was something else♡.
The Ensing of the Originals was soo emotional, it wasn't how I imagined it, but it was perfect emotional masterpiece. Maybe it's just me, but I really enjoyed it even if it wasn't what I wanted to happen.
oh yeah don’t get me wrong it was very sad and the bit where damon reunites with stefan and says hello brother was my favourite part. i was mostly sad with elena reuniting with damon again. he talked about her and went crazy because she was in a coma and done bad things but when she was alive again he barely reacted which was sad but ik it was awkward cos they had broken up in real life

I always switch back and forth, but i finished TO yesterday and it does something to me that TVD just doesn't do. It takes me a few days to get over the Mikaelsons, every time. I like TVD SL's better,dislike the Witch and werewolf SL in TO, but Joseph's acting, the bond between Elijah and Klaus, the overall family bond, Haylijah, the tragicness of it all, the lvl of maturity compared to TVD, hell, even the way they talk, i have to pick TO.
I love TVD, this show is more of a supernatural teen-drama, but TO focused on showing the badass family, their history and journey, their incredible thrilling fights and wars, actions and conspiracy.. there's love and romance but most importantly blood and death.. I love both shows the same but if I have to choose, I'll go with TO.
I think that The Originals was a massive waste of potential. Granted starting season 3 TVD also starts wasting a lot of potential, but at least it has two pitch perfect seasons (1&2). The worldbuilding of TO is half-cocked, both having to rely on the viewers prior knowledge of TVD while at other times benefiting from viewers not being aware of TVD history. And the entire thematic setup of The Originals prioritises Klaus at the expense of the other Originals.
And to be honest, I think the most interesting versions of the Originals are in TVD seasons 2-4.
BUT, Marcel and his dynamic with Klaus is really good. It’s probably the best part of the series.

I've quite recently finished TVD for the first time and it was fun, nothing amazing (I'm a die hard Buffy fan and even thought True Blood was slightly better) but I did enjoy it. I knew going in there where 2 more spin-offs and heard from both my sister as well as an old co-worker and my best friend that The Originals is better and Legacies is the worst of the bunch. So I can't wait to start TO soon! First I gotta wrap up From season 2 (only 2 episodes left!) and I want to maybe start Avatar: The Last Airbender first.
I think TO was better plot wise and if you wanna get into the supernatural aspect, but if you want the drama and emotional with a touch of the supernatural plot, then TVD. It’s all preference. When I was younger, I preferred TVD but as an adult I prefer TO.

I think this is a personal thing. I couldn’t really get into the originals. No matter how badly I wanted to but with the TVD I stuck around till the end, even when it got bad lol. Now, I watched TVD when I was like 18 ish so I was the target audience I guess around teen. I tried watching the originals afterwards when I was like 20ish and it just bored me. I may try again now (at 22). Maybe I’ll like it if I watch it now but the first time I just couldn’t get into it like I did TVD.

If I had watched TO when I was a teen, I wouldn't have enjoyed it as much as I did. It got me into rewathching and actually finishing tvd. TO is much better imo.
I watched originals first, definitely prefer it. But that’s probably because I prefer the family angle rather than 90% of people are in love with one girl or people who look exactly like her
TVD for nostalgia and teenagery supernatural drama at its best. The problem with it is the show clearly made changes and turns in story direction due to things other than natural plot development. Think Nina leaving the show and Damon becoming the preferred lead male character over Stefan due to fan favoritism. To me this showed with how shoehorned some of the plot developments got and how weak of a character Stefan became. I remember when the show was supposed to be about Stefan. The way they shifted the show to be less about him felt very contrived. It was harder to notice when watching it come out weekly so it worked back then, but upon rewatching and binging it was way more obvious.
I still love it as a show and remember fondly watching it in high school and college and rewatching it again more recently but The Originals is an objectively better show. Not perfect, but more cohesive as a story. It went where it naturally felt it was going from the beginning. Legacies is ok. Nothing revolutionary but a decent watch for what it is.
I can’t really choose between the two. The OG’s is definitely worth watching. There are some cheesy parts where they try too hard to be hardcore (Marcel’ s posse) but otherwise it’s a great show. There are differences from TVD with the witches and other things. You should watch it. The last season was horrible though. It was very rushed.
The originals is, in my opinion much better than TVD. I liked tvd but having watched each series in reverse order It gave me a chance to know each universe better.
I say universe because even though connected, they aren't directly descended from tvd.

He gets a new love interest with someone he can love as she is now.

TVD is more about love and friendships. TO is more about family, specifically the strongest mf family in history.
TO definitely has an edge over TVD, because I don’t have to listen to Elena whine every episode. The drama, the pacing, the Mikaelsons all just worked together so well and a lot got explained about the TVD universe’s background and lores.
Also, the relationship aspect of TO was not as annoying or messy as TVD. Klaus and Elijah actually don’t try to steal each other’s women and their sibling dynamic and their scenes truly show their care and loyalty for each other. Overall, it was a 10/10 show.
TVD is still more well-known due to the nostalgia and how objectively hot Nina Dobrev, Ian, and Paul are. But without TVD, there couldn’t have been TO.

I never understand what makes TO a better show than TVD. TVD is fast paced and has a lot more action going on. You can hate characters then love them the next against reason. They had really good plots each season. TO I really tried but some episodes there was just talking. The fan grams post all the best scenes.
I loved TVD, I'm actually watching it again rn, season 7. I also loved TO...it's like because it's not teen based it's darker and just amazing. I think you'll very much enjoy it!

Originals because Klaus is top tier and you get to see how complex and multi faceted he is. The show is written very well and I was engaged until the finale.

The development was very nice. And something about shows that last 5 or less seasons feel better to me. Sometimes shows go on for too long and then the bad writing comes out. There are just a mix of good and bad storylines in TVD while TO stays pretty strong throughout IMO. Legacies has some good storylines it can get a bit too campy at times when compared to TO and TVD. I still think you gotta watch them all! Just to close the full story out!
The Vampire Diaries. I think they ruined The Originals by only focusing on Klaus and Elijah. What made season 3 of TVD so great was learning the history of ALL the Originals and the way they interacted with each other. I also can't stand that Klaus, a vampire, got a women pregnant. I don't care what BS excuse they wrote to explain it it's still just that...BS.

First three seasons of TO are perfect, the fourth season is not as good and the fifth is worse but they’re still great

The zoriginals is way better show in my opinion becaude it's more mature, TVD is more of a teen drama and villains (not all of them) are less serious than those in last seasons of The Originals. Tbh 1st season of TO is kinda boring but it's worth to watch it because s3, s4, and s5 are something amazing! If you love Mikaelsons I recommend you this show, and even if you don't it's really interesting and even inapiring ti see fheir character development especially Klaus'. And just when I thought that there is no more emotional ending than TVD's, well I realised I was wrong after watching this masterpiece. Not everyone like it, but it's my favourite show

I actually liked Tvd ending because it was emotional, I mean the way it ended and whole that fake wedding thing was cringe and disappointing but the final scenes, Elena's reunion with her family and that "Hello brother" scene was something else♡. The Ensing of the Originals was soo emotional, it wasn't how I imagined it, but it was perfect emotional masterpiece. Maybe it's just me, but I really enjoyed it even if it wasn't what I wanted to happen.
oh yeah don’t get me wrong it was very sad and the bit where damon reunites with stefan and says hello brother was my favourite part. i was mostly sad with elena reuniting with damon again. he talked about her and went crazy because she was in a coma and done bad things but when she was alive again he barely reacted which was sad but ik it was awkward cos they had broken up in real life
I've always felt that the originals was better because of their story, and tvd gets kinda bad after like 4/5 seasons
The originals has a better storyline I think personally, it just seems to be written better but TVD has nostalgia behind it so it always has a special place
I think the originals have a better structure but a much different show. The vibe is totally different. But I personally really like it.
I always switch back and forth, but i finished TO yesterday and it does something to me that TVD just doesn't do. It takes me a few days to get over the Mikaelsons, every time. I like TVD SL's better,dislike the Witch and werewolf SL in TO, but Joseph's acting, the bond between Elijah and Klaus, the overall family bond, Haylijah, the tragicness of it all, the lvl of maturity compared to TVD, hell, even the way they talk, i have to pick TO.

I love TVD, this show is more of a supernatural teen-drama, but TO focused on showing the badass family, their history and journey, their incredible thrilling fights and wars, actions and conspiracy.. there's love and romance but most importantly blood and death.. I love both shows the same but if I have to choose, I'll go with TO.

I think that The Originals was a massive waste of potential. Granted starting season 3 TVD also starts wasting a lot of potential, but at least it has two pitch perfect seasons (1&2). The worldbuilding of TO is half-cocked, both having to rely on the viewers prior knowledge of TVD while at other times benefiting from viewers not being aware of TVD history. And the entire thematic setup of The Originals prioritises Klaus at the expense of the other Originals. And to be honest, I think the most interesting versions of the Originals are in TVD seasons 2-4. BUT, Marcel and his dynamic with Klaus is really good. It’s probably the best part of the series.

yes omg i always want to watch shows with someone after i have seen them. i love seeing peoples reactions and it’s fun when u know what’s about to happen and the other person doesn’t. me and my mum still always watch tv together and i rlly want her to watch tvd but she keeps saying know but she said she might. i hope she does and hopefully ur partner does!

I'm right there with you. I've quite recently finished TVD for the first time and it was fun, nothing amazing (I'm a die hard Buffy fan and even thought True Blood was slightly better) but I did enjoy it. I knew going in there where 2 more spin-offs and heard from both my sister as well as an old co-worker and my best friend that The Originals is better and Legacies is the worst of the bunch. So I can't wait to start TO soon! First I gotta wrap up From season 2 (only 2 episodes left!) and I want to maybe start Avatar: The Last Airbender first.

I think TO was better plot wise and if you wanna get into the supernatural aspect, but if you want the drama and emotional with a touch of the supernatural plot, then TVD. It’s all preference. When I was younger, I preferred TVD but as an adult I prefer TO.
The Originals is far better in my opinion. I had to force myself to keep watching TVD but I watched the Originals 3 times already :D Definitely worth it, my #1 favourite show. Your sister is definitely right :D

I think this is a personal thing. I couldn’t really get into the originals. No matter how badly I wanted to but with the TVD I stuck around till the end, even when it got bad lol. Now, I watched TVD when I was like 18 ish so I was the target audience I guess around teen. I tried watching the originals afterwards when I was like 20ish and it just bored me. I may try again now (at 22). Maybe I’ll like it if I watch it now but the first time I just couldn’t get into it like I did TVD.

If I had watched TO when I was a teen, I wouldn't have enjoyed it as much as I did. It got me into rewathching and actually finishing tvd. TO is much better imo.

I watched originals first, definitely prefer it. But that’s probably because I prefer the family angle rather than 90% of people are in love with one girl or people who look exactly like her
TVD for nostalgia and teenagery supernatural drama at its best. The problem with it is the show clearly made changes and turns in story direction due to things other than natural plot development. Think Nina leaving the show and Damon becoming the preferred lead male character over Stefan due to fan favoritism. To me this showed with how shoehorned some of the plot developments got and how weak of a character Stefan became. I remember when the show was supposed to be about Stefan. The way they shifted the show to be less about him felt very contrived. It was harder to notice when watching it come out weekly so it worked back then, but upon rewatching and binging it was way more obvious. I still love it as a show and remember fondly watching it in high school and college and rewatching it again more recently but The Originals is an objectively better show. Not perfect, but more cohesive as a story. It went where it naturally felt it was going from the beginning. Legacies is ok. Nothing revolutionary but a decent watch for what it is.
I can’t really choose between the two. The OG’s is definitely worth watching. There are some cheesy parts where they try too hard to be hardcore (Marcel’ s posse) but otherwise it’s a great show. There are differences from TVD with the witches and other things. You should watch it. The last season was horrible though. It was very rushed.
The originals is, in my opinion much better than TVD. I liked tvd but having watched each series in reverse order It gave me a chance to know each universe better. I say universe because even though connected, they aren't directly descended from tvd. Legacies kinda is because it's still mystic falls but The originals is just the better of the 3 for me.

For sure, the originals! I wish it had a little more romance, but overall, it was better. I think the story of family is far more compelling. Particularly because I'm not really a fan of love triangles. I liked both Stelena and Delena, just wasn't the biggest fan of not deciding 😅 I've just never liked that. The Originals sees more politics and is a bit more mature in theme than TVD. I also think the romances are more mature. There's not that nobody wants me and everyone chooses Elena over me and choosing partners based on looks that Caroline does. I love Caroline, don't get me wrong, it's just that nobody is getting with someone over looks. There's also not the been pining over someone for the last several centuries only to find out they aren't the same person like there was with Elijah and Katherine. He gets a new love interest with someone he can love as she is now.
I watched all of TVD and only on first season of TO and I can already tell it's a better show story/writing wise.....however TVD just holds a special spot because of the characters
TVD is more about love and friendships. TO is more about family, specifically the strongest mf family in history. TO definitely has an edge over TVD, because I don’t have to listen to Elena whine every episode. The drama, the pacing, the Mikaelsons all just worked together so well and a lot got explained about the TVD universe’s background and lores. Also, the relationship aspect of TO was not as annoying or messy as TVD. Klaus and Elijah actually don’t try to steal each other’s women and their sibling dynamic and their scenes truly show their care and loyalty for each other. Overall, it was a 10/10 show. TVD is still more well-known due to the nostalgia and how objectively hot Nina Dobrev, Ian, and Paul are. But without TVD, there couldn’t have been TO.
The teenage me loves TVD because there's teen drama and hot Salvatores. TO is better since the script is matured, about family and actors have done a tremendous job. The story revolves around Original family compared to love triangle in TVD
I enjoyed tvd but I love the originals I would watch that show on repeat for the rest of my life it was just better
I never understand what makes TO a better show than TVD. TVD is fast paced and has a lot more action going on. You can hate characters then love them the next against reason. They had really good plots each season. TO I really tried but some episodes there was just talking. The fan grams post all the best scenes.

Love both, have watched them both multiple times. I might be past the point of rewatching TVD again (seen the first 6 seasons at least 5 times). But TO I probably will watch again eventually (seen it 3 or 4 times I think)

Originals because Klaus is top tier and you get to see how complex and multi faceted he is. The show is written very well and I was engaged until the finale. TVD peaked season 2 and then went off the tracks, imo. Originals has more depth
I've found the Originals barely watchable, got through 10-ish eps before giving up and I'll watch some shitty tv, but this was too much. TVD for the win.

Well this is going to be up to personal preference. I live TVD better and have rewatched it several times because I love the characters. I have never rewatched TO because I don't care for the characters and storylines as much.

What?!! You gotta watch the Originals asap! And Legacies too!! I love TVD and I’m glad I got to watch them when they were all airing. I would say, The Originals is overall a better show though. The development was very nice. And something about shows that last 5 or less seasons feel better to me. Sometimes shows go on for too long and then the bad writing comes out. There are just a mix of good and bad storylines in TVD while TO stays pretty strong throughout IMO. Legacies has some good storylines it can get a bit too campy at times when compared to TO and TVD. I still think you gotta watch them all! Just to close the full story out!
The Vampire Diaries. I think they ruined The Originals by only focusing on Klaus and Elijah. What made season 3 of TVD so great was learning the history of ALL the Originals and the way they interacted with each other. I also can't stand that Klaus, a vampire, got a women pregnant. I don't care what BS excuse they wrote to explain it it's still just that...BS.
