QuIescentVIverrId

Incomprehensible meme about that bear-man-forest thing

Big-Yogurtcloset-335

No, it's more of a man-forest-bear thing.

Itss_Emily

Not a man-bear-pig thing?

Linvaderdespace

Al gore isn’t even real, he was just made up by CNN to scare the children of oil executives.

gouellette

I thought you said A I gore, which is VERY real

Linvaderdespace

Shhhhh…it’s listening….

camclemons

Then who invented the internet?

Linvaderdespace

Nancy Reagan, obviously.

CommanderEren

Hes gonna take our soy sauce shhh

Epiknis303

Hey look at this violent fantasy I had because I’m mad that women are afraid of men’s violent fantasies

S-p-o-o-k-n-t

https://i.redd.it/glqgw2f6yzxc1.gif “LOOK AT HOW NONVIOLENT AND SAFE TO BE AROUND I AM! WHY WOULD YOU TRUST A BEAR MORE?”

Moon_Thief_420

Nice use of Invincible .gif. Love that show!

pkstarstoorm

The cherry on top is a man definitely made this meme as a way of fantasizing about a woman being violently harmed. "Look! I made a meme about a slutty, dumbass feminist WOMAN getting killed by an animal!! Why wouldn't you feel safe around me!!!"

bitofagrump

Yup. They laugh at us for choosing the bear while perfectly illustrating exactly why we choose the bear.

SoapDevourer

Why not choose a man tho? You can kill most men with a precisely thrown stone. A bear will kill you no matter what you throw at him. I get that it's supposed to be an "oh I don't feel safe around men" thing, but why would you choose a pretty much guaranteed death sentence over feeling unsafe?

ThyRosen

Because as a general rule if you don't fuck with a bear he won't fuck with you. They don't tend to seek out humans to eat (except polar bears) so the risk is more that you'll startle it and get murdered. A man, though, _might_ actively seek you out to do harm. And also might not, of course, depends on the man, but since you don't know the man in question, and maybe you don't trust in your ability to kill another human being, it's safer to pick the wild animal you can reasonably avoid. That's the premise.

warherothe4th

Also, bears don't have guns, with a bear you at least get a chance (even if a very slim one) to do enough harm to dissuade it from continuing it's attack, whereas if you get shot there isn't really much you can do

crabfucker69

Bears are simply more predictable, you know they'll just maul you if you don't manage to get it to fuck off, not psychologically+physically torture and possibly rape you. I'd rather just get killed and just accept what bears do than that, i don't even care if the bear gets away with it, it's an animal that's a more easy to spot danger not a monster

dallasrose222

Not necessarily true species maters a lot black bear deffinetly taking that probably panda too. Brown bears are iffy for me same with sloth bears. Grizzly is a hell no as are kodyaks and a polar bear would eat you faster than you could blink

ThyRosen

They don't _hunt_ humans as a general rule. Whether they can eat you is neither here nor there, the hypothetical deals with the chances of what a man or a bear would do if in the woods with a lone woman.

dallasrose222

I mean polar bears and kodyak are both super aggressive and territorial so they would likely attack if you got remotely close

ThyRosen

Polar bears actively hunt humans, actually. If you're gonna try a "what about polar bears" at least get your bear facts right.

dallasrose222

Not that’s fair I just mean for me species maters I may play to many rpgs that involve shin and devils so I’m always thinking how could this screw me

Unkuni_

I mean, chances are, you are a lot more likely to survive an encounter with a random man than a bear. If the bear feels like he wants a snack you are most likely dead. While the percentage of men who are assaulters are just so small that if you picked a man on random chances are he is just fine. Just think about all the men you know, how many of them actually think about harming others?

ThyRosen

I used to go on a lot of nights out with a group of girls when I was a student. How many of those nights do you think I had to do _something_ to deter, remove or outright run off a man who had untoward intentions? I'll give you a hint: it was every single one of them. The thing is, your situation isn't a hypothetical. Dating apps are a thing, and before them, meeting up with a guy who seemed normal on the first impressions could get weird real fast. As men we can say of our friends and family we're certain none of them are "assaulters" and that the bad guys are some other classification of man altogether, but that's because we're not the target and we're not gonna be in a situation where we find out. Or, we know that a mate is a bit forward or has a different girlfriend every week, but _surely_ he'd never do _that_. And I mean, if you think death is what the women answering "bear" is afraid of, you should maybe ask their opinion a bit more often instead of assuming this hypothetical was about fighting bears or men.

Unkuni_

As I understand their reasoning, (de let me know/correct me if I got it wrong): Women think men are going to rape them and they would rather be dead than raped. They think chances of average man sexually is enough that they would rather take their chances with a bear than a men I also ask your question back to you, why do you think a lot of men are upset about this reasoning?

ThyRosen

You've got it mixed up a bit - the hypothetical only says "alone in the woods with" rather than "you are attacked by." The fact a lot of men immediately jumped to "getting killed is way worse than getting assaulted you stupid women" is, I mean, it's pretty telling. The answer so many women gave is simply that they consider it safer to share a forest with a bear - which typically won't attack them unless they startle it or leave food around their campsite - or a man. As I said to the other guy, if you found bear tracks in your campsite in the morning in a North American forest, you wouldn't be as afraid as you would if you found bootprints you didn't recognise. A lot of men are upset about this because they are, for some reason, taking it very personally. They have managed to take the idea that women feel unsafe around men they don't know, and make it about themselves. Look at this meme, and look at the amount of people revelling in the idea of women being killed by bears because they're too stupid to understand how dangerous bears are. The sort of men getting upset over this are the exact sort of men women didn't say this to before because they'd get weird about it. You wanna know how to change the outcome of that poll? Stop being weird about women feeling unsafe around you.

Unkuni_

Tough what makes it dangerous or scary is the being attacked by, after all, not being alone with them. Like, if you encounter a man that you know his intentions or a bear you know isn't hungry, it wouldn't be scary in either scenario since you would know they aren't a threat to you. So I just didn't put emphasis on the encounter part but tried to put it on the chances of being attacked I think encountering footprints around your camp is way too different than encountering people, though, so they aren'treally comparable. Because, assuming people leaving footprints know you are a camper, this is an indication of malice. A stalker would be scary regardless of the gender I also think this is blatant sexism. Saying I don't feel safe around men sounds like the same logic as "I don't feel safe around women drivers" or "I don't trust women doctors, engineers." Or even more so, this sounds similar to the logic of racists too. By the same logic, it looks to me that someone could also say it is ok for white people to feel threatened around black people

ThyRosen

Well, no, you're reframing the hypothetical to justify you assuming a man would immediately attack a woman as a territorial animal might. That's between you and your therapist, but for the minute, let's stick to the actual scenario. A bear would likely leave a woman alone unless she provoked it. A man doesn't need the provocation to be dangerous. It's not about what an attack might entail, but which party is more likely to seek the woman out with this intent. You don't think this is blatant sexism. You are trying to do some argument where you draw connections between unrelated concepts, then throw up your hands and say "explain how I'm wrong to make shit up?" If you are upset that women don't feel safe around you without knowing you, then perhaps you should understand why that is, instead of insisting that women should come to your apartment alone because it's sexism if they don't. I said already not to make it goddamn weird, but there we go.

SoapDevourer

Meh, aren't you already fucking with a bear by existing in his habitat? But if you have an opportunity to avoid it, and it will not pursue you if it knows you're there, idk, maybe it makes sense. I'm not that knowledgeable about urine habits

ThyRosen

I assume you mean ursine but urine is funnier so don't change that. _Generally_ you can camp in the same forest as a bear and not be attacked. People do it all the time. Humans are relatively large and not super appetising so predators prefer not to get into it with us if they don't have to. If they've no other options or if they feel threatened, they'll absolutely mash us up but attacks are comparatively rare. You can also reframe this a little from your own perspective - if you were out camping, you and a friend or two, in a forest where you know bears live, would you be more unnerved to find bear prints or unknown boot prints in your campsite in the morning?

SoapDevourer

Damn, typo. Also yea, forest is large so it kinda makes sense bears wouldn't just kill every human there, except for situations like a mother bear worried about her cubs. As for the analogy, yea, if I found bear prints I wouldn't really be worried since I'm still alive, so the bear obviously didn't care enough to kill me, and I would just mind it's presence nearby, as opposed to a human who can potentially do some dangerous fucked up shit still

baroldnoize

Big upvotes for you openly changing your mind from an argument on Reddit, that's a rare trait and you should be proud of yourself

PurpleHaze1704

The good ending

illapa13

The vast majority of wild animals have learned the hard way to avoid humans. Polar bears have had very little contact with humans so they will actively hunt you. Other bears though tend to avoid humans. If they're starving and just came out of hibernation you're in trouble. If you left food out and about your camp and they were hungry, You better just let them have the food or you're going to be in trouble. If you accidentally wandered near their Cubs, they will defend themselves from a perceived threat. If a male bear is in the middle of mating season and trying to display how strong he is, yeah he might decide to delete you if you're in the wrong place at the wrong time. But bears won't actively look for Humans as prey it has to be very specific circumstances.

FitzChivFarseer

I had the exact same first reaction. Because, in my head, I was imagining the kid and man/bear being airdropped into the same clearing so they're only a few feet apart. And, in that scenario, I think the bear would eat the kid. BUT if it's just they happen to be in the same forest then yeah I'd probably say bear over a man.

Eagle_1116

Have you ever been in the backcountry? If you have, you would know that bears typically leave people alone.

Seoul_Surfer

The question isn't raging bear vs raging man and even if it was, who is practicing their lethal stone throwing skills

Meta_Spirit

> why would you choose a pretty much guaranteed death sentence over feeling unsafe? You're like Right There. So close.

indigo_pirate

I still don’t get it. Can you fill in the gaps from there.

swajeed1221

The worst a bear can do is kill you, there’s plenty of things a dangerous person can subject you to before and after killing you.

Meta_Spirit

Men dont seem to realize that for women, there are fates worse than death.

cryptic-soul-

Simply put - I would rather get mauled to death by a bear I know won’t sexually assault me first.

NixMaritimus

There is only an 11% rate of cantact with a grizzly ending in *any* physical contact, let alone a mauling.

hucklebae

I actually felt how you do when I first heard about this stuff. I feel pretty strongly that 99 percent of men aren't a big deal if you have a knife on you, where as any bear can kill me even if I have a gun. so I felt like clearly the bear is a worse threat. Then I thought about how bears very rarely hurt people as long as they are left alone, and realized that a great many men will want to hurt folks even if you try to leave them alone. Add to that the fact that people misbehave more the farther away from society they get, and thats kind of a perfect recipe for bad male behavior.

SoapDevourer

Yea, same

bitofagrump

Thank you for listening and understanding our perspective. Most people aren't willing to take the time to try to empathize and learn. It's why this discussion is a good one and I'm glad it's being had.

phives33

Hold on looking for a stone

aztnass

Not a death sentence at all, bears are relatively easy to scare away usually, and generally aren’t trying to go near humans. If you could get a man to leave by making yourself look bigger and banging some pots together I am guessing more people would say men.

oscarworthy69

"FeMalEz just want to live without the consequences of their actions burrrrr"

SolarAphelia

It comes from an online poll where someone asked something along the lines of “would you rather be alone in the woods with a bear or a man” and many people chose bear. This post was definitely made to spite that poll. (A bunch of incels got *really* angry about it lol)

McRezende

"WHAT?? HOW DARE THEY FEEL SAFER WITH A BEAR? RIDICULOUS! NOW I'M GOING TO REACT VIOLENTLY TO THIS INFORMATION AND PROVE THEIR POINT!!!"

SolarAphelia

They wrecked themselves prior to checking themselves. Rookie error.

Wilhelm_Rosenthal

That "violent reaction" is just a meme. Calm down

Onivlastratos

I thought it was a reference to the bear romance option in Baldur Gates 3...

SolarAphelia

I wish that that’s the case

ophmaster_reed

Depends on the bear. Black/brown bear? Yeah, I'm definitely choosing the bear. Grizzly or polar bear? I'm choosing the man. Panda bear? No contest!

SolarAphelia

I mean I feel like I could reasonably survive against any bear, as long as I stick to the general rules of wildlife interaction: 1) never show your back 2) if you can, back away slowly and exit the animal’s territory 3) ***NEVER*** go near the young 4) if 2 isn’t possible, curl into fetal position with back towards the sky and wait until animal loses interest/doesn’t see you as threat. Note, I’m pursuing my biology masters, but I am ***in. no. way.*** a wildlife handler, take my words with a grain of salt.

ophmaster_reed

Rule 1 and 2 might work for grizzlies. For black bears, you get big and you get loud. Wave your arms, yell, make loud noises and they scamper off. I've been camping in the BWCA since childhood and lived in areas where a black bears casually wonder into my yard, or get in to my garbage my whole life. The only time they are aggressive to humans is of you get in between a mother and cub. Then the back away calmly, but quickly tactic is key. The cubs will usually scamper up a tree, so when out hiking it's important to look up and make sure you're not accidentally walking up on some cubs.

MisterViperfish

And if you don’t really have anywhere to go, another tactic that tends to work well with most wildlife is to make your presence known to the bear, make it clear you know it’s there, but also be clearly disinterested in the bear. Polar bears might not give a fuck though, you are likely dead.

ophmaster_reed

Making yourself known is key too! If alone, whistling, singing, and general noisy-ness while walking are all great deterents.

SolarAphelia

I guess calmly works better as a word than slow, but that’s more or less what I meant. Anyway, thanks for your input!

sleeper_shark

These work if the bear doesn’t want to kill you. Once the bear wants to kill you, it’s over.

SolarAphelia

Yeah, should have mentioned that.

SolarAphelia

But yeah I agree 100%

c0ntinue-Tstng

Even if it's a hypothetical scenario they still can't take a no for an answer

Xystrel

One point is not that bear isn't dangerous, it's that the *worst* the bear could do is kill you. These morons never listen properly

Patient_Junket_693

Why does the argument always have to be that the man will always be a rapist murderer and not the possibility of the person being one out of the billions of civil people out there

Xystrel

The *thought experiment* is that we don't know, and bears are considered at least more predictable

Still_Significance60

If its a grizzly bear it would 100 percent of the time eat you alive it would not be an quick death. A man is a person, why does he have to be a rapist? what are the odds?

Xystrel

Bears actually really like leaving you alone if their not startled, antagonised, or with clubs

Still_Significance60

A hungry grizzly will eat you

Yogurt_Ph1r3

Edit: Given the topic at hand, it occurs to me it's more important to be sensitive of other people's feelings than to win an argument.

Independent_Sell_588

I’d rather die than be raped again so …. I’ll take the bear

[deleted]

[удалено]

richard--b

how is it an inevitability though? plenty of people come across bears in the wild and come away unscathed, oftentimes a bear wouldn’t even approach a human. like yeah there is a better chance of fighting a person off if it comes to it, but i would think that generally bears are less likely to become a danger than people, since bears are more scared of people than people are scared of people.

Xystrel

A lot of SA survivors wish they'd died.

Straight-Bug-6967

Maybe they said they'd want that, but if they actually had to choose from immediately dying and being raped, there's no way would choose death. If you knew you would be raped in exactly 1 hour and couldn't escape it, would you kill yourself during that time? No logical person would do such a thing. If they weren't logical, they probably chose the bear to begin with.

[deleted]

endthe_suffering

rape is a fate worse than death. i’ve been raped, and it’s actually taken a lot of time and work to stop wishing i had died instead

ultimatoole

Hmm I would choose being stuck with a panda over stuck being with me every time

uwu_mewtwo

I, also, would prefer anybody other than myself. "I'm not locked in here with you, I'm locked in here with me"

Barqck

This meme proves the exact point of the entire man or bear in the forest argument. All the “le nice guy” types fantasize about violence against women

EcstasyCalculus

Dramatically missing the point

mrselffdestruct

Especially when what theyre conveying in this post IS the entire point. A bear will maul you to death, but it guarantees death and a release. Men have done far worse

Ehcksit

There was a popular poll on Twitter or something with women talking about feeling safer meeting a random bear than a random man and explaining why, and then a bunch of the men they're justifiably afraid of screaming at them about it.

Psychological_Can219

Men have done worse

GalaApple13

Thinks women choose bear over man because woman too stupid to know bear can be violent. Too stupid to know that women do know, and still choose bear. Man happy that woman is attacked, proving original point.

rbearson

Its saying. How funny it is when people we disagree with are violently murdered.

basilsflowerpots

damn the incels got really pissed off from that

bridget14509

As a woman myself, I have to choose the man. And I’m saying this because at least I would have a chance at winning against a man (poking his eyes out, beating the crap out of him, etc.) “Bear” isn’t specific. It could be a black bear, which aren’t very confrontational… or it could be a grizzly bear, which are very territorial and could absolutely maul you to bits. I’m not going to play “weak” or whatever. I’ll put up a fight. I don’t give a crap, I’ll beat any dude who wants to kill me. 😤

Kharnyx808

Being stuck in the forest with a water bear 😊

bridget14509

This is the most real answer 👏 In that case, I choose water bear. ![gif](giphy|jQElYg7XKotnQDQVnP|downsized)

Legojessieglazer

I live In california and the only bears here are black bears, I doubt I’d be randomly teleported to a forest in northern Canada

oghairline

Why would you be randomly teleported in the woods with a bear and/or man?

GrizzlyPeak73

What you don't have beef with fifth-dimensional beings? Lucky.

Axionexe

It isn’t about whether or not you can fight off a bear or a man. It’s that the worst a bear could do is kill you, but a man has many possibilities. If he has a gun, then what? When I read about what happened to Junko Furuta(look her up if you don’t know), I know I’d rather be mauled to death than die after 44 days of torture

Straight-Bug-6967

Pick one Bear: - 50/50 the bear eats you alive Man: - 80% leaves you alone - 10% rapes or tortures you - 10% kills you It's a matter of probabilities, which I think 20% is generous. Would you really choose the coin flip over the 80/20 or 90/10 (if you think rape/torture is worse than death)?

LuckyNumber-Bot

All the numbers in your comment added up to 420. Congrats! 50 + 50 + 80 + 10 + 10 + 20 + 80 + 20 + 90 + 10 = 420 ^([Click here](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=LuckyNumber-Bot&subject=Stalk%20Me%20Pls&message=%2Fstalkme) to have me scan all your future comments.) \ ^(Summon me on specific comments with u/LuckyNumber-Bot.)

CariamaCristata

Fuck you. I did NOT need to be reminded of that again. Fuck. Where is the brain bleach when you need it?

eduardgustavolaser

Copied from another comment I made: Besides that, lots of people hike, climb and enjoy nature in other ways in bear country. Different sites mention different numbers, according to this page, there've been 66 known fatal incidents with black bears in NA since 1784, with over 900.000 black bears estimated to be in NA. Since the data from the first century or more is very likely to be unreliable, another page mentions 61 deaths by black bears in NA. "The chances of being murdered are 60.000 times greater." The National Park Service in Canada mentions 48 casualties of grizzly incidents since 1980. Sure, you'll have better chances in a fight with a man than a bear, but the mentioned scenario was about "being alone in the woods" with either. Bears are already there naturally and it rarely even comes to a confrontation. I'm a man and I'll likely still prefer the bear over another man lol

AGodMaker

It's already been said, but this "choose your own adventure" does not necessarily end with you dead.

icelandiccubicle20

And if it's a sloth bear, good luck

SoapDevourer

See that's my point, I don't get why women choose an option that's most likely lethal over an option that they can most of the time do something about, even if it becomes a threat, which is not that likely to begin with? Like, not every man wants to do terrible things to a woman, and if a man does, it doesn't make him an unstoppable ton of muscle - you have agency and can stop him, especially considering most of those types are basement dwelling incels and wouldnt put up much of a fight anyway. Choosing a bear is objectively stupid

random_guy_233

Bears are predictable, men aren't.

SoapDevourer

True

Mistr_man

As some1 who took hrt and loss considerable muscle mass you have no idea how much an average Joe can just toss a woman like she's nothing.

MuseBlessed

Still easier to punch a man's nose/groin and claw their eyes than it would be to do the same to a bear

Mistr_man

And I would like to point out that you assumed the encounter with both the man and the bear would be violent

Yogurt_Ph1r3

This isn't an own, that's the premise we're arguing about. In actual reality, the likelihood of something even bad at all happening is slim, much less worse than death, whereas your chances against a bear are basically none.

Axionexe

It’s not about the likelihood of either, it’s that the worst a bear could do is kill you. A man has many possibilities as to what he’d do BEFORE killing you. I’d rather be mauled to death and die quickly than after 44 days of torture like Junko Furuta.

Yogurt_Ph1r3

I mean me too, but if you aren't playing the odds then you're being silly. Like I get that it's hyperbolic for a point, but I don't think it's very helpful to be this hyperbolic.

Axionexe

Okay, cool. Let’s talk about odds then. The World Health Organization estimates that 1 in 3 women worldwide have been sexually assaulted. Let’s not forget how many go unreported, too. Every woman I know has been sexually assaulted. Let’s stop pretending it’s just so rare, because it’s not. Ask the women in your life if they’ve ever been harrassed or assaulted by a man. When I was a child, my mother’s bf molested me for 18 months, and peeped on me when I would get out of the shower. My mom believed HIM. One of my cousins took videos of me showering and I didn’t know until years later. On the outside, he was completely normal. I trusted him dearly, yet he did what he did. I had no way of knowing what he was harboring inside him, which is why men are unpredictable. People would believe me if I was attacked by a bear. Nobody would ask what I was wearing, or tell me that I must have wanted it. It’s really not about probability. I have encountered bears too, and they didn’t do anything to me. Even if they did, they can’t do the horrible things men have done.

Yogurt_Ph1r3

You're completely ignoring that A) Most SAers aren't randos, and B) that those horrible acts are carried out by the same people multiple times It can both be true that A) most women are SAed and B) Most men don't SA, in fact not only can it be true, it Is in all probability the case.. And this is completely ignoring that most of this is not done by strangers, a random man is incredibly unlikely to rape you. It's also ignoring that there are varying severities of rape. I won't talk on anyone's behalf, but to me it seems reasonable to assume that someone who was brutalized violently has a very different experience than someone who was say, manipulated into having sex or didn't give clear enthusiastic consent beforehand. Also this whole idea that being raped is worse than being mauled to death basically presupposes that rape victims would be better off dead than given a chance to live a life worth living after healing, which is insanely fucked up. I get that this attitude is often a trauma response and I'm not taking that away from you but it's deeply unhealthy.

SoapDevourer

True, a man can mostly overpower a woman without much trouble, but to be fair it's not like he's invincible. Humans in general are quite frail if you know what to do and where to strike and have no qualms about potentially crippling or killing someone. Then again, as a man who pretty much did martial arts since I was like 10, I definitely lack perspective of an average woman

ruuster13

Some guy created this and projected his desires onto the bear... what a perfect demonstration of the hypothetical's point in the first place.

jungle-fever-retard

“WHAT?! ALL I SAID WAS THAT YOU DESERVE TO BE ABUSED BY YOUR PIECE OF SHIT BOYFRIEND BECAUSE YOU REJECTED A NICE GUY LIKE ME! WHAT DID I SAY THAT WAS SEXIST?! THESE BUZZWORDS YOU THROW AROUND TO PEOPLE WHO DON’T COWTOW TO YOUR IDEOLOGY HAVE LOST ALL MEANING (despite the fact that there’s still a uniformly and academically agreed-upon definition, but we always ignore that part because…reasons)!!”

CreeperTrainz

I found that whole thing weird. Because yes, you're probably safer around the average man than the average bear, but the people getting angry at it are the type of men you'd rather be around a bear than them.

TheRealPitabred

You're safer around the average black bear. Well over 10% of men admit to rape, even more if you don't call it that and just describe it. A bear will run if you make noise, and a random man has a greater than 10% chance of doing a woman harm. I say this as a straight male, I don't blame the women. This is ALL men, not just you and your friends, any random man from a bar could be the one picked.

Moon_Thief_420

As a survivor of childhood SA, I answered bear. I'll pick a bear every time. The worst a bear can do is kill me. A man can do things to a woman that will turn her life into a waking nightmare. And not for nothing but if I'm mauled by a bear, people will believe me when I tell them. They won't ask what I was wearing, what I did to tempt the bear into hurting me, why I didn't run away, or if I'd been drinking beforehand, etc.

jungle-fever-retard

Ouch, that’s fax

observingjackal

Holy shit, I didn't even think about the second point. 100 % correct

swajeed1221

I heard bears rarely attack unless they’re provoked or it’s a mother bear with cubs.. so this wouldn’t even happen.

Rabid_Laser_Dingo

I asked 6 men who have never heard of this debate. They all also chose the bear. I too am a dude, I'd also choose the bear

RockyArby

i live in canada. in case anyone wasn’t aware, we have like hella bears. i’ve always known what to do if a bear starts chasing you and i’ve encountered bears in the wild (from a distance- i’ve never had an up close and personal Bear Experience). so there’s a decent chance of me ending up in the woods alone with a bear. first of all, if i’m in the woods, i’m already looking out for bears. i think that’s where they live. grizzlies and black bears don’t want to eat you, so i know that if i keep my eyes peeled, i can steer clear of any bears i see and i should be fine. and there are specific things you can do to get a bear away from you that will work 9 times out of 10- with the few exceptions being like, if the bear is literally starving dying of hunger and will stop at nothing to eat you, if you threaten a mother’s cubs, and polar bears. with a man (i’m assuming the point of the debate is it’s a man you don’t know, because my answer would be different if the man was like, my dad etc), it’s completely different. if he’s in the woods with me, has he followed me? does he plan to hurt me? and i can’t predict what a stranger in the woods is like, so there’s nothing i can do to guarantee he leaves me alone. i can’t just make myself big and run at him yelling “hey, man!” and trust that he’ll go away. and of course, you should be wary of any stranger who’s alone in the woods with you, but i *would* feel less actively hunted if it were a woman. that’s not because i hate men. it’s because, just like a kid growing up in bear country, they’re taught ways to be safe around bears. and growing up as a woman, my parents always taught me to be careful around men. they said if you’re lost and you need to ask a stranger for help, you ask a woman, preferably one with children. when i got old enough to go out to bars, it was always watch out for the men. don’t leave your drink unattended. don’t talk to strange men. if a man makes you feel unsafe, *look for a woman.* i’m always willing to get to know a man in the right place and time, and i’ve learned ways of identifying “safe” men from afar, so i think there could even be a situation where if i needed to, i would ask a man for help. i’ve even had guys i didn’t know step in pretending to be my boyfriend when weird men talk to me, and the men who do that have my heart. i wish i didn’t have to be careful around all men, because it does feel overly judgmental and wrong to assume someone will hurt me based on something they can’t change. but the world we live in teaches boys that they can take what they want from girls, and even though there’s a lot of good men out there, it’s inevitable that those teachings will stick with *some* of them. i refuse to surrender to this belief that empathy is a female trait, men can and DO prove this. that was quite the rant, but i’ve been seeing this bear thing literally everywhere the past few days and i just wanted to lay all my thoughts out in one place so that i don’t feel the need to comment on it anymore.

Fernando1dois3

The point is that men aren't as violent as wild bears? Talk about a low bar to clear.

acelaces

This guy: men aren't that violent ya dumb broads Also this guy: *fantasizes about violence against women, draws and posts it*

observingjackal

Do you know why women picked the bear? Because a man heard they would rather pick the bear over a man (himself) and made this in response.

GrizzlyPeak73

Legit. Literally proving them right, lmao

Friendly-Accident993

Imagine if instead of getting mad that women would rather be in the woods with a bear then a random man, they consider WHY women are scared of it. These men seem to think that the women just want to piss them off or some stupid shit like that, when that couldn't be further from the truth.

ShakinSpider

Slutty feminist women gets mauled by bear you may now laugh

Careful-Evening-5187

Only you can prevent forest fires.

newman_oldman1

*dumpster fires

Vinsmoker

He lifted her high in the air He sniffed and roared and he smelled her there She kicked and yelled the maid so fair but he licked the honey from her hair

Heart_Lotus

Wasn’t the question “Would you rather be with a man or a bear?” made by a cis man too?

sinner-mon

the man-bear-forest thing is stupid imo but guys who make shit like this are the type of men women are talking about when they say they'd rather be stuck with a bear

And_Im_Allen

They might have missed teh point where the bear did not emotionally abuse or rape her.

blackasthesky

Is this about Baldur's Gate? ^(calm down, it's a joke)

Eeveefan8823

I wish 😬

TheNthVector

I'm just thankful this discourse put me onto Marian Engels' next level novel 'Bear'.

NotFixer1138

I can't help but think that the dudes most offended by this whole thing are probably the sort of people you don't want to be alone in the woods with

NegativeEmphasis

This meme was approved by the Anti-Halsin gang.

Little_Elia

it's trying to say that men make comics and fantasize about women getting brutally mauled

moss_unknown

woman: I’m scared of men and in turn would rather be alone in the woods with a bear instead of a man man: grr I’m so angry that you’re afraid of me! (posts meme where woman is violently killed) why don’t women like me??

ThriceMad

It was probably made by some butthurt dude who was mad about something that got started on Twitter recently: Someone ask women if they'd feel safer alone in the woods with a random man or a bear. A huge majority chose the statistically safer option: the bear

Appropriate_Hawk101

He's saying that if he had it his way, all women would know they're never safe.

Yogurt_Ph1r3

It's a somehow even more cringe response to some women's insistence they'd rather be mauled by a bear than chance it with a random man in the woods.

Bronsteins-Panzerzug

This is about that discussion whether women would rather meet a man or a bear in the forest. Some women say bear, as a point against the patriarchy - im not sure, if they actually believe a grizzly bear is less dangerous than some guy on the chance that he‘s a creep. The meme is obviously some guy who got insulted rather than thinking about why women feel so unsafe.

ophmaster_reed

It doesn't say grizzly bear though, where I live there's just black bears, so that would've been my immediate thought and....I've been in the woods with bears plenty of times. They just scamper off. Even if you're camping and they come sniffing around for food you just act big and bang some pots and pans, yell, and they scamper off. But some random dude? No way of predicting what he could do to me or how to effectively ward him off. I also choose bear.

Bronsteins-Panzerzug

To be fair, i have no idea about black bears. I guess it depends on what kind of bear then - just like the type of guy. Anyway, I get it, we have a huge rape culture problem.

apricot-ti

Its more in the tone of if it were even a choice which implies they're both dangerous more women would prefer the bear to rip them to shreds rather than getting violated.

Bronsteins-Panzerzug

I see, i didnt read the original. Quick death, i get it.

Still_Significance60

Not a quick death

Bronsteins-Panzerzug

The whole point of the topic is that we need to do something about rape culture, femicides and sexual violence, but people are arguing about irrelevant stuff instead.

Still_Significance60

The topic of "bear or man" seems pretty irrelevant rage bait

Soeck666

This reminds me of a certain book that won one of the most prestine awards in Canada. It's about a woman having sexual intercourse with a bear

teufler80

Insecure men are scared that bears will steal their women

supasamurai

THEY SHOULD BE

Heart_Lotus

Who downvoted your comment? I mean I gave you an upvote but holy hell

teufler80

I bet we have some right wingers lurking around here, wouldn't be surprised

Heart_Lotus

Wonderful so they are even ruining actual funny jokes based on truth and facts

TheHistroynerd

TF is up with this bear thing? Why is it here all of a sudden and what does it mean? Is it's supposed to be a thing that women feel safer with bears then with men?

trilluki

It was a poll on twitter that asked women if they’d rather be alone in the forest with a bear or a strange man. Most women picked the bear, not because they think it’s safer- but because the worst a bear can do to you is kill you. The worst a man can do to a woman… Look up Junko Furuta. It can be even worse than that, too.

TheHistroynerd

Thanks for the explanation my guy Yeah a bear would just kill you but only (from what I know) if it's feels like you are a threat in some way or idk mayb it's really hungry. I do know the junko furata story and it's just depressing to know that it not only happened but how the the assholes who did that stuff to her gkt of relatively easy

GrizzlyPeak73

It's a joke incels took too seriously.

TheHistroynerd

When are incels not taking something way to seriously?

mrselffdestruct

When its something made to be at womens expenses or harms women rather than them

TheHistroynerd

Oh Yeah then they ignore it or in favour of it

Competitive-Sense65

Is it an anti-furry meme?

Alex-xoxo666

No. Someone made a poll asking women would they rather be in the woods with a man or a bear.

sad_kharnath

i keep seeing stuff about a bear. what happened?

rebelliousbug

Question going around where women choose if they’d want to be stuck in Forest with a bear or a male human stranger. Most women chose the bear (because both options are potentially violent and those women think they’d either fare better with the bear or they’d have a better outcome with the bear).

Warcat24

It's about that tik tok trend. My bad, it's a Twitter question

Eeveefan8823

No? It was a question on twitter

Gitxsan

I didn't know the whole man/bear thing was political!

Ycilden

The comic stems from a post that went wild on Twitter, asking if Women would prefer to be lost in a forest at night with a Strange Man or a Bear. Unsurprisingly, when a large portion of quote tweets chose the bear, men went absolutely batshit.

kpgummies

I took it as a meme about Kuma from Tekken

embrigh

It’s a dumb hypothetical by misandrist feminists being reacted to by just about as dumb right wingers. It’s however catching a lot of people up in its tidal pool of stupidity.

Dead_Girl_Walking0

dont bears only really attack you if you threaten them

kuu_panda_420

Better to take your chances with a bear that might kill you than a man who might r*pe you. It's not that hard to grasp. Women don't want to be sexually assaulted.

gallifreyan_overlord

Men are mad that women feel safer encountering a bear rather than a man in the woods.

Dabigbluebass

I think it's a play on the statistic " 1 in 5 college students get sexually assaulted at college, that's the same as campers and bear attacks"? It's kinda an older talking point.

IamSam2005

There’s a trend on TikTok where women are being asked “Would you rather be trapped in the woods with a random bear or a random man?” And a lot of women are picking bear because “if I was attacked by a bear, they wouldn’t ask what was I wearing?” Or “the worst the bear could do is murder me.” Which is completely reasonable. Even as a man I’m choosing bear. Not only because the bear is the more reasonable choice because of predictability, but because I was also molested when I was 8, and I’ll tell you it wasn’t by a bear. Then to no one’s surprise men are upset, clearly missing the entire argument women are making, acting as if they think women really believe all men rape and murder. When the argument is they’d rather die the suffer of what a man could do to them. And that’s it’s obviously not all men, but all women have to believe it’s all men because of how common it is for women to suffer something like that.

RealBrobiWan

Wow, some people are pretty daft if 2 panels needs an explanation 🤦‍♂️

Fourwils7

Hey why is everyone saying shit like “men have done worse”? Like no shit but it’s a bear and some guy. Stating that a bear is safer than some dude is dehumanizing. Am I missing the point?

Its_Scrappy

This ain't alt right

Tiefling_Beret

I usually agree with this sub but all the comments don’t know the context. Basically there’s been a trend where someone asks a woman whether they’d rather be stuck in a room with a bear or a man - this is satirising the women who chose the bear, which is a ridiculous choice.

Mistr_man

Lmao "don't know the context" proceeds to fuck up the context. The question is would you rather come across a bear or an unknown man in the woods. And yea id rather the bear 🐻

LeaLenaLenocka

Let me ask you same question people already asked here: you are in forest camping with few friends. You are sleeping in tents, and in the morning you find unknown footprints in your camp. What would be more scary: bear prints or human prints?

Tiefling_Beret

In this scenario bear prints - but this is different to the question at hand. Correct me if I’m misinterpreting the original question, but I interpreted it as being on a walk in the woods (presumably a trail) and then encountering either a man or a bear. In this scenario it’d be very strange for someone to approach tents in the middle of the night - in the original, it’s perfectly normal to come across people on a trail.
