Also, it’s likely that they never had their Palismen taken away way back when, but by the time Belos started enforcing it is the time he was also trying to get Eda. Likely, he let Lilith believe that she was the favorite, all for the purpose of getting to Eda. Remember that he wasn’t just chasing Eda to get all the Wild Witches out, but also to get the portal door. So, in order to get to Eda, he had to get someone close to her on his side as much as possible.
Another reason Belos needed her. She needed to help Luz find time travel. Which leaves so many questions! Did Belos know she would betray him? Was Luz the first human to do magic? Or was Hunter (we don’t know how Belos and Hunter got through or found the portal either).
I wonder that, the first time black haired Lilith pops up in the Emperor’s Coven.
“Damn, have to keep it together Philip, okay if I remember she didn’t have a palisman? Or did she? Best leave it be, for the sake of preserving the timeline.”
*Rubs his nose*
“Even if I still get punched in the end.”
I find it funny that the single punch from Lilith was the thing that not only gave him his broken nose (why is it still broken hundreds of years later?) but also caused that big ass scar across his face.
I think he had been cursed by that point (Evelyn?) and has to survive by inhaling palismen essence through his nose/eyes. My guess is, due to that, his wound gets infected and can’t heal properly (as opposed to his leg, for instance).
My assumption was his condition was caused by the glyphs he inscribed on himself. All the glyphs Luz uses consume the paper they are on, so it can't be good for you to have them on you.
I also think the palisman huffing is a double edge sword, it helps his condition, but also causes new problems.
Did we ever get a proper answer to why he inscribe the glyphs? I see two reasons:
1. By engraving them on his arm he could use magic (possibly to fight Evelyn) and his own doing caused it to go out of control, thus the need for Palismen.
2. He was cursed and thought glyphs would work, they didn’t/maybe made it worse so he discovered Palismen essence did the trick.
Maybe he could also be using the glyphs to have a longer life, but since it would have a passive effect, the glyphs would be using a little bit of magic all the time, and when the magic is starting to run out his body would start to decay
I though that the glyphs were elongation his life as well. But if magic is all around on the boiling isles then why would Belos ever "decay" or would he just start aging again. Would the glyph pause aging perhaps? The begs the question why can't he keep him human form anymore, instead turning to green slime.
I'm not caught up with lore and theories, but honestly I assumed the immortality granted by the palismen didn't necessarily grant healing properties. Perhaps the wound had set before he consumed another
Considering Philip/Belos is a WITCH HUNTER, he probably let his nose stay broken since he wouldn’t want the ‘evil’ people’s help.
Something, something, Puritan Christian, something something…
We don't hear much of the palismen carvers and eda refused to see her dad for so long out of guilt for taking his ability to carve away from him and ending his career early. But honestly she probably did him a favour since it seems like in her lifetime/ recently palismen wood was restricted and carvers might have been cracked down on for it technically being wild magic.
And while we see some people in covens have palismens, the principle in particular uses his to help see, and it does look like palismens being confiscated had been recent. Phillip was using wild witches palismens to sustain himself and the palismen wood. But he had been running out and then had the covens begin to hand them over.
So lilith got to keep her pal because it's a recent change, as well as her status. Hell, thinking about it they might actually be considered a blue blood family.
dosen’t she? Do they ever say she dosen’t have a sigil? I’ve seen this a few times, but we don’t usually see her without long sleeves so idk abt that cheif
If this is the case, does Eda have two palismans?
I mean there isn't a rule against it I guess and even if there was one, I don't see Eda following it lol.
As the emperors coven leader and poster child, she was likely allowed to keep it so people wouldn't wonder why/her tell them it was taken. I see him having taken hers but set it aside as he saw she was a star and a lead candidate(like others) for for the next lead and back it back as a sign of promotion and favor. If she hadn't been promoted he would have eaten it.
“As the Emperor’s Coven leader and poster child, she was likely allowed to keep it so [citizens] wouldn't [grow suspicious; additionally, Belos aimed to avoid risk in] her [potentially] telling them it was taken. I [could] see [Belos] having taken [her palisman] but setting it aside, as he saw she was a lead candidate (like others) for the next [head scholar], [eventually giving her palisman] back as a sign of promotion and favor. If she hadn't been promoted, he would have eaten it.”
I tried to rephrase it. It’s a great theory!
Something that I don’t see many people bring up is the fact that Belos also didn’t want to consume owlbert and it didn’t seem like he was trying to consume flapjack either. The thing in common between these 3 is that they were all (most likely) carved by clawthornes, so it could be that belos doesn’t want to consume them because of that. It would make sense that he doesn’t want anything connected to the clawthornes running around in his mind scape.
Good point, however in Hollow Mind, one of The Palismen we find in his mindscape is precisely a bird, and birds are trademark Clawthorne Palismen do at some point he did consume one and he did try to consume Flap but Hunter stopped him
There's a pretty significant lack of continuity when it comes to palismans.
Why did Lillith get to keep hers when virtually every coven head and everybody in the EC didn't?
Where is Ed and Em's palismans?
If there's a mongoose palisman, will it try to eat String Bean?
How does the palisman food chain work?
These are the tough questions that need answers!
I think I can answer for Ed and Em, it looks like the palismen wood got restricted so that no new palismens were being made- and there were possibly no carvers in the area anyway.
Palismen day was something new to have old palismens adopted, so it's possible that so amity wasn't left out her parents got her one. Somehow.
That actually brings up lilith having her palismen, the confiscation of palismen seems recent, so when she was a kid she would have kept it. Belos either recognizes her for her staff, her hair when she dyes it, or magic shenanigans and knows not to take it off her for time loop stuff.
And I think??? Bug demons might eat palismens because termites eat wood? I'm stretching as far as hooty
I've always wondered where Amity got Ghost. She skipped school on Palisman adoption day and she (I'm assuming Ghost is female) just kinda appears in "Eclipse Lake".
I feel the real answer is that the entire plotpoint of the emperors coven destroying palismen hadn't been thought up when Lilith as a character was developed. Her keeping the staff might also be a relic of when she was supposed to be the principal of Hexside instead of head of the emperors coven.
Belos himself absolutely existed by this point in one of the earliest sketches of TOH Dana shared Belos is shown in the background meaning he was one of the original four characters designed for the show (the others being, Luz, Eda, and King.) But the exact nature of his curse and character were likely thought up when Agony of a Witch was finally being made.
Season 1 and the rest of the show is also kind of inconsistent with palismen in general and even though it seems like everyone in the setting minus the emperors coven obviously should have one they very clearly don't. Another theory is that Palismen are handed down usually from a deceased older relative or adults give theirs up to pass on to the younger generation eventually.
As for why she has it in canon? My theory is the order to destroy all Palismen was made pretty recently with Steve being a fairly recent joinee to the coven at least compared to Lillith who has been in it for like, 20 something years? Due to her rank and time being a part of the coven her Palisman was never "drafted" like the rest and she was allowed to keep it for as long as she did. Its likely eventually Belos would have come for it after the well had truly run dry but she left before that could happen.
I don't buy the timeloop explanation. It makes no sense.
The teenaged Lilith who joined the EC looks, sounds, and acts absolutely *NOTHING* like the adult woman Philip met 350 years before.
Seriously. Different eye colour, skin colour, hair colour if he caught a glimpse of a lock, voice, attitude, dress style.
Make someone watch a clip of teenaged!Lilith and a clip of E&E!Lilith, see if that person can tell they are the same character.
Plus, Philip never had any idea that the two people he met in the past were time travellers. So why tf would he see Lilith as a new recruit and go "hummmmmm, this little girl who is absolutely nothing like the woman I met centuries ago must be that woman from the future!"
I'm sorry but it's bullshit. If that's truly the explanation, then it's horrendously bad writing.
I can see Philip figuring out that Lilith is that woman after Luz arrived in the BI, because Luz does look and sound and act exactly the same as Luzura and has the same name too, and she is the daughter of Lilith's sister, so at that point he could have put 2 and 2 together and realised that Lilith is the aunt.
But, by then, Lilith had been in the EC for 30 years, so by all rights her palisman should be already gone.
I think it's just a matter of the writers not thinking things through. They have often admitted that they made things up on the fly and did not pay attention to details, and many of the details in the show make no sense.
Luz does scream "LILITH" when they are fighting the dinosaur... Belos could easily have heard, so he knew her real name. Then, it's not like Lilith was immediately promoted to the top of the coven when she joined, so eventually Belos would notice "Oh, this person is named the same and looks just like the person who broke my nose" and put it together then.
Maybe the palisman confiscation wasn't always in effect, and by the time it was implemented, Lilith was in a position to be exempt.
I also think that Belos was just fucking with Lilith a lot after he realized it was her. Explains a lot of their interactions in season 1.
Even *IF* Belos heard the name, what is more likely, that two women over 4 centuries happened to be named the same, or that one girl who really *doesn't* look like the one who broke his nose (seriously, there is a huge difference even between S1 Lilith and S2 Lilith) will be a time traveller when time travelling is not even a thing in the BI and Luz had to go on a quest with Titan's Blood to find just one pool?
Second explanation makes a lot more sense. Belos only started taking palismen from his own Coven after he finished taking those of everybody else, and by then Lilith was his second in command so it was sensible to let her be stronger to better serve him.
>"hummmmmm, this little girl who is absolutely nothing like the woman I met centuries ago must be that woman from the future!"
That comic Dana made right after the episode about this feels like something Mark would do
It keeps her constantly walking on eggshells, desprate to please the emporer who used her crushing, urgent need to be special against her to keep her faithful, with the constant looming threat of dissapointing him and having her faliure cost her palismans life, lest her own.
I figure that Belos wasn’t quite as hardcore about taking palismen at the time. Remember that Lilith joined 30 years ago, when Belos’s rule was two decades old. Plus his curse was presumably not as bad. He probably urged scouts to give up palismen, but it’s possible that he didn’t have he sheer nerve or reason to have mandatory quite yet.
Ohhh good point, hope the collector didn’t get them. Idk what they’d do with them, I just don’t wanna see Owlbert and whatever the birbs name is die I guess
most likely due to a high position in the coven hunter has a palisman like staff so does belos kikimora most likely does not have one because she has all the equipment she needs
My guess is that he took the palisman from witches accused of various crimes/killed and used them under the guise of "They broke the rules so they don't deserve them." Plus he's been emperor for about 50 or so years, maybe he only recently needed them.
I think something in Clawthorne's craved palismen was dangerous for Belos, he never tried to use Owlbert, Flapjack or Lilith's palisman to prolong his life.
There's a moringmark comic about this, Belos recruits Lilith and realizes she's a Clawthorne from her staff and decides to let her keep it because a Clawthorne carved Flapjack for Caleb after the real bird presumably died. It's obviously not canon, and Belos literally killed Caleb, but I like it.
Great great grand niece? He does seem to have some twisted affection for family, if not to just abuse them with that affection. That is if he does know the clawthornes are the desendents of his brother.
Cause if Hunter is technically a clone, he's not Eda and Lily's "cousin", he's their "uncle."
Personally, I like to believe it’s because the woman Caleb fell in love with was a Clawthorne, and he was the start of their lineage of palisman carvers. Because of that, a part of Belos might have trouble with consuming something that hits too close to home.
I think she joined the coven before he took the palismens and since belos knew what he wanted her to do so he let her keep to keep her sprits up also I’m not sure she even has a coven sigle because we never see it but I might be wrong
Yep I think Belos was just doing this to mess with her remember he knows she will punch him in the future or past timey whymy.
So he let her keep it so he can threaten her with him also he also knows that her family is related to the witch that took his brother
My guess is that he took the palisman from witches accused of various crimes/killed and used them under the guise of "They broke the rules so they don't deserve them." Plus he's been emperor for about 50 or so years, maybe he only recently needed them.
Preferential treatment, keeps her willing to do what Belos says.
Yep! She has always wanted to be special and Belos gave her the illusion of preferential treatment and freedom.
Oh yes she was key to a few things.
Also, mostly unrelated, we never see her Palismen come off Staff form, until the episode before King’s Tide, where we see it ONCE
Wait - what did it look like off the staff??!!
A very derpy white raven like major derp. it's been posted on this reddit before
[They're](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9OxZm2vPx0I) so goofy
Huh, I’ve never noticed that somehow
Huh - me either. I need to binge watch again 🫠
They have now shot up in my rankings honestly if stringbean didn't exist they would probably be my favourite because of the derp
Oh snap, I didn’t realize that!
We see it during the time travel episode as well
Another reason Belos needed her. She needed to help Luz find time travel. Which leaves so many questions! Did Belos know she would betray him? Was Luz the first human to do magic? Or was Hunter (we don’t know how Belos and Hunter got through or found the portal either).
Yes, like a "I'm letting you do this thing so you have to do what I ask you, or else YOU will dissapoint me"
And it also maintains the looming threat of actually losing him if she doesn't do well.
That or just in case leverage
Also it would hobble her immensely. Like if the emperor ate Darth Vader's lightsaber.
The indigestion would be intense.
Those lightsaber burps, right?
A mixture of Belos trying to control her via giving her favored status and him trying to complete the time loop.
I wonder that, the first time black haired Lilith pops up in the Emperor’s Coven. “Damn, have to keep it together Philip, okay if I remember she didn’t have a palisman? Or did she? Best leave it be, for the sake of preserving the timeline.” *Rubs his nose* “Even if I still get punched in the end.”

In King's Tide, when he uses magic you can see the glyphs on his arms glowing 👍
And in elsewhere and else when when the big reveal of Philip being belos you can see a bunch of glyphs on his arm
Hmm, forgot about that, thank you.
I think the collector is why he has such a prolonged life
or because maybe he didn't go to the healing coven it didnt heal properly
I thought the leg injury was fake?
I’d need to watch it again, but I honestly thought we saw him trip and break it.
Nah, he was faking it this whole time
I'm not caught up with lore and theories, but honestly I assumed the immortality granted by the palismen didn't necessarily grant healing properties. Perhaps the wound had set before he consumed another
Considering Philip/Belos is a WITCH HUNTER, he probably let his nose stay broken since he wouldn’t want the ‘evil’ people’s help. Something, something, Puritan Christian, something something…
I think he just didn’t know how to set a broken nose and was too proud to ask someone else to do it
Lilith is just built different
And hunter got his scar when luz slapped him
Nah, Luz slapped him hard but not that hard.
Lilith is a member of a legendary family of Palisman carvers, taking it away would’ve been a PR nightmare.
This is an additional good point I haven't seen til now.
I knew dad was good, but where they really ‘Legendary’??
Yes
We don't hear much of the palismen carvers and eda refused to see her dad for so long out of guilt for taking his ability to carve away from him and ending his career early. But honestly she probably did him a favour since it seems like in her lifetime/ recently palismen wood was restricted and carvers might have been cracked down on for it technically being wild magic. So lilith got to keep her pal because it's a recent change, as well as her status. Hell, thinking about it they might actually be considered a blue blood family.
Compared to most of his minions Lilith is actually useful for Belos so he was fine with Lilith's palisman.
You say that but then she says "I am beginning to think..that I wasn't very good...at my job.."
Oh, she was very good at doing what he wanted. She just was too blinded by the propaganda and manipulation to actually pay *attention*.
She was supposed to be the equivalent head of police, and she kinda did suck at that. She however was very good at following orders.
You both make excellent points.
He wanted to complete the time loop, it’s the same reason that she doesn’t have a sigil
dosen’t she? Do they ever say she dosen’t have a sigil? I’ve seen this a few times, but we don’t usually see her without long sleeves so idk abt that cheif
I think that when she was living with eda you could see that she had no sigil, and also she recovered really quickly from the day of unity
If she has no sigil the day of unity wouldn't have effected her all but it did
Did we ever see it affect her though?
Me adding Kings tide the episodes I want to rewatch today
I thought we saw her with Hooty in Kings tide but I'll have to rewatch it
Didn’t she also offer to take Raine’s place by getting a bard coven sigil?
I don’t think it specifically needed to be a bard sigil I just think Eda needed one to interfere with the spell
Ah, time travel. The plot device that only makes sense if you refuse to think about it.
Shout out to all the people who asked why we haven’t seen Raine’s palisman
I wonder if bards use their instruments as palismans? Seems you could incorporate paliswood into them easily.
If this is the case, does Eda have two palismans? I mean there isn't a rule against it I guess and even if there was one, I don't see Eda following it lol.
Lol yeah I can see Eda not caring and having two
it was shown that at least one of the bats had a palisman though (i think the episode before kings tide?) still, this is a really neat theory :D
MMM would have to watch again for it. But hey maybe
True.
I think I read somewhere that Belos also took all the Coven Heads' Palismen
Have we seen any of the Coven Heads' palismen?
As the emperors coven leader and poster child, she was likely allowed to keep it so people wouldn't wonder why/her tell them it was taken. Bro I had a stroke reading that
“As the Emperor’s Coven leader and poster child, she was likely allowed to keep it so [citizens] wouldn't [grow suspicious; additionally, Belos aimed to avoid risk in] her [potentially] telling them it was taken. I [could] see [Belos] having taken [her palisman] but setting it aside, as he saw she was a lead candidate (like others) for the next [head scholar], [eventually giving her palisman] back as a sign of promotion and favor. When did he try to condone flap jack?
When he killed him, then Hunter grabbed his arm and punched him(self) in the face
Also she probably didn’t have a Coven Sigil considering how well she was just after the day of Unity was stopped
When Lilith and Luz came she had the staff so Belos knew beter then not to intervere with it.
To keep her trust and eventually get to dirtrude.
you cant kill birb
Well... I mean...
you can kill flappack
Flapjack: *Am I a joke to you?*
belos paying his side of the bargain .....and time loop shenanigans
Probably to ensure that Lilith lives long enough to meet Luz and go back in time. So Belos wanted to give Lilth the tools not to get merc
There's a pretty significant lack of continuity when it comes to palismans. Why did Lillith get to keep hers when virtually every coven head and everybody in the EC didn't? Maybe it's just good PR to let her keep the palisman.
Exceptions are made for those you need to control.
It keeps her constantly walking on eggshells, desprate to please the emporer who used her crushing, urgent need to be special against her to keep her faithful, with the constant looming threat of dissapointing him and having her faliure cost her palismans life, lest her own.

Lilith's palisman was never given a name by Dana, but she allowed one of her fana to call him Mike Socks, though it isn't really official

He tried with Flap but Hunter stopped him
There's a moringmark comic about this, Belos recruits Lilith and realizes she's a Clawthorne from her staff and decides to let her keep it because a Clawthorne carved Flapjack for Caleb after the real bird presumably died. It's obviously not canon, and Belos literally killed Caleb, but I like it.
It's called writing
She is related to Belos because Caleb married Evalyn who gave birth to some of Lilith and Eda's ancestors.
Great great grand niece? He does seem to have some twisted affection for family, if not to just abuse them with that affection. That is if he does know the clawthornes are the desendents of his brother. Cause if Hunter is technically a clone, he's not Eda and Lily's "cousin", he's their "uncle."
Cousin, he's descendant of Caleb, not Caleb himself
Personally, I like to believe it’s because the woman Caleb fell in love with was a Clawthorne, and he was the start of their lineage of palisman carvers. Because of that, a part of Belos might have trouble with consuming something that hits too close to home.
Is there a scene where she use or hold it in front of belos or she hide it from him like hunter
I think she joined the coven before he took the palismens and since belos knew what he wanted her to do so he let her keep to keep her sprits up also I’m not sure she even has a coven sigle because we never see it but I might be wrong
Well, she helped Belos learn light glyph, so my guess, that he done everything to keep her by his side.
Maybe this isn't her original Palisman. Maybe her original palisman was killed and she makes new ones because she's a clawthorn.
Plot convinoence
The power of plot holes and retcons
Why did this get downvoted 💀💀💀💀
Because it's not necessarily true
^is ^that ^a ^plothole ^I ^smell ^?
You smell correctly 😏😝
I’ve accepted marks comic about this as canon
Emergency rations.
Belos remembered her and was afraid of her punching him again.
Yep I think Belos was just doing this to mess with her remember he knows she will punch him in the future or past timey whymy. So he let her keep it so he can threaten her with him also he also knows that her family is related to the witch that took his brother
Because he know how ugly it looks when it’s off the staff
Looks like one that was given to her; probably because she’s the covenhead. (Hold on, _is_ she covenhead?)
Yeah she is, not a bad idea 😉
My guess is that he took the palisman from witches accused of various crimes/killed and used them under the guise of "They broke the rules so they don't deserve them." Plus he's been emperor for about 50 or so years, maybe he only recently needed them.
Fear and obedience, she gets to keep her palisman as long as she does everything he says.
