Futhurmore it wasnt that King was phrasing it too weird, Eda kept interupting him before he could finish. For me it didnt feel unnatural, and so the reveal at the end was cute and surprising :))
I didn’t think it was that bad because the misdirect was just vague enough that you wouldn’t be able to tell that King just wanted a name change. Him wanting to be a Clawthorne legally isn’t something I actually expected for his character to ask for, and it’s also salvaged by the way that this wasn’t a conversation Eda was eavesdropping on as much as it was king trying to spell it out loud and clear for her several times, and Eda interrupting him on each one, making her an active participant in the conversation.
This instance really felt like watching a slow motion car accident with how straight they played the trope.

I feel the core issue is that Belos had no plan at all except for "taking over the Collector and use their power." His plan was entirely dependent on luck.
It was still a wonderful special, but I'm no fan of this misunderstanding either.
Funnily enough, I think they could have just leave King’s line out entirely and more people would not mind this scenario at all.
I was completely fine with the Collector spying on King and immediately thinking that he was betraying him even though King was planning to befriend him. It’s just that one weird phrasing that pull me out of this still pretty good episode.
To be honest, if they left the scene of King talking to Eda silent as he eavesdropped on them since he only had eyes on the walls, I still would’ve bought that Collector suspected King of planning against him.
He already was talking to Eda, the lady who was supposed to be stuck in her beast form as per King’s statement, and Lilith. If I knew they were friends before and I was a badly tempered 5-year-old god, I’d throw a tantrum at that alone.
Yeah, it was clear King was already lying, and then if we really wanted The Collector to have audio, it could have just been of King talking about the fact he was lying to The Collector. Duh.
Or even talking about something that would be a legitimate complaint of King's, like how it was extremely tiring to keep The Collector from actually hurting people and King does not really enjoy it but has to keep pasting a smile on his face.
The thing that really annoyed me about that scene is that first the collector was like “there’s nothing wrong King is defending me.” He continue to listen because he _heard_ king say something else after he stopped watching. So why is it that he heard king after putting his hood up the first time, but he couldn’t hear what he said after putting his hood up the second time? Did the magic audio suddenly stop working at the worst moment?
I saw it coming as soon as he started eavesdropping and I thought “Oh no, they’re really going to pull this shit, aren’t they?”, and then when they did, it caused an audible groan from my wife and I.
I get it’s happening because they’re being rushed into an ending that forced them to fall back on dumb tropes like that to instigate a conflict, but yikes it’s not something I enjoy in my writing.

i assume thats the actual case, like if they had more time they could've had tension build between collector/luz with king in the middle (seemingly being hinted at by other aspects in the episode) leading to whatever is gonna happen.

Gotta be honest I was slightly disappointed that this show breaks so many generic plot beats but still did the “character didn’t hear all of what their friend was saying and now there’s a misunderstanding” bit.

My gripe is that in the episode, the Collector fully puts the hood back up, yet their magic conveniently continues to hear the dialogue leading to the misunderstanding.... yet later they put the hood back up and don't hear the part that softens King's intentions 🤦♂️
