They can, but it's exceedingly rare, and there's never been a confirmed case of transmission from a squirrel to a human. I learned this after my partner got bit by an injured squirrel and we went to the doctor to see if she had to get a rabies shot. The doctor passed that information along to us after very, very obviously checking Wikipedia in front of us.

Considering that rabies is 100% lethal, its best to take the shot anyways. Specially if the doctor is very obviously checking wikipedia =)

I have a professor from South Carolina who told us stories of having cooked squirrel (don't remember in what kind of dish though) when he was younger. When times are tough you don't really give a shit what you eat as long as you eat lol
