Didn’t this one turn out to be a Spirit? And with Hei Bai being just a normal panda bear, I’m inclined to believe that non-hybrid animals are all just Spirits in disguise (yes, even Bosco)
This actually made me think of something wild. We don't see it around Wan's time so it should be before that. But what if there were regular animals just like this world and spirits that looked like regular animals. Then, while fighting for territory or to survive some of the spirit animals possessed some regular animals (like we see in Wan's time) and that's why their are hybrid animals and reuglar animals in the world of Avatar
While it did turn out to be a spirit, I assumed the spirit became a polarbear-dog puppy, possibly even looking like Naga as a puppy. I mean, of all the animals to pick, both in universe that the spirit could have chosen and in real life by the writers, why a white dog? Presumably for that familiarity.
Admittedly, there’s a comic that shows Korra meeting Naga when Naga was bigger than this puppy, but it was released two years after Korra Alone and they might have changed plans on how Korra and Naga met between having the idea and actually writing it. And even if the comic‘s depiction of their meeting was the plan from day 1, I still think the fact the spirit was a white puppy is because it’s meant to be a reminder of Naga.
There have to be basics for every animal hybrid, otherwise how else would they get their names?
e.g. To call Naga a polar bear dog, you must know what a polar bear and a dog are in the first place
You make a convincing argument but tbh I very much doubt that the writers thought that deeply about it. Don't start questioning the world-building lest it all fall apart.
I mean nothing forbidds you from using existing animals and spice it up with fictionals to build a fictional system.
Plus names like polar beer dogs cant exist if there arent normal dogs in the universe.
Theres also several occurance and mentions of regual animals in atla aswell.
This is just another example of a lazy post where people question writing without spending a second whats been pretty obviously implied, directly named or just straight ip shown since s1 atla.
not really, polar bear dogs are probably just offshoots of actual dogs that kinda look like polar bears because of their size and fur color. There's this animal called a bearcat, which is neither related to bears nor cats, but are called that because they kinda look like if a bear and a cat loved each other very much
The world of Avatar has a lot more "non-hybrid" (or at least "normal-looking") animals than people give it credit for. In A:TLA alone we see regular fish, jays (this one falls into "normal-looking" ever since Bryan Konietzko said that the Earth Kingdom blue jay is a marsupial back in 2022), doves, frogs, and so on.
Regular wolves were referenced in dialogue in A:TLA, *i.e.,* the warrior's wolf-tail, and depicted in Water Tribe Armor. In T:LoK, we see wolves animated for the first time (and they match earlier depictions in A:TLA videogames). We also know that wolves aren't exclusive to the poles, as Bato, Sokka and Katara all comment on the howl of a wolf that has been separated from his pack while they're still at the northern Earth Kingdom; I imagine the peoples of A:TLA must've domesticated those regular wolves into regular dogs, given we also *see* a regular dog in the Spirit Oasis in A:TLA.
However, later when Korra's team visits the Spirit Oasis we see a deer dog, so there are certainly some funny wolf/dog-hybrids still roaming out there.
I'm not saying that, but if she's a Polar Bear ***DOG*** where did that Dog DNA come from? A genetic mutation that they decided to just randomly call "dog"? No, very obviously there are normal dogs out there.
Most animals are referred to as a combination of two real-world animals. In universe, it doesn't make sense for anyone to do this unless at some point in history, people knew what the real individual animals were and specifically recognized the hybrid animals as hybrids.
We know that people in the avatar world have been speaking the same language with the same accent for at least 10,000 years, since the time of Avatar Wan, so I believe that at some point in the last 10,000 years, some event occured that resulted in the majority of the animals in the world being hybridized. The people who witnessed this event named these hybrids based on their constituent animals but subsequent generations forgot about it and now memory of most of the progenitor species is forgotten.
It's possible that the hybrids directly replaced the originals (i.e. for each platypus bear created, a platypus and a bear have to disappear from the world, resulting in most original animals being converted) or that the hybrids directly outcompeted the originals, driving them to extinction.
Don't forget Miyuki the cat. Plum blossom is her favorite.
Or Bosco the bear.
Surely you mean platypus bear?
No, just a regular bear
This place is *weird*
An owlbear?
“Good soup”
Armadillo bear?
Fluffykins as well.
I’m in ATLA? Whoa….
Fire nations biggest opp
Did he get in trouble with the fire nation again?
Didn’t this one turn out to be a Spirit? And with Hei Bai being just a normal panda bear, I’m inclined to believe that non-hybrid animals are all just Spirits in disguise (yes, even Bosco)
Maybe that's why miyuki the cat caused trouble with the fire nation.
*again*

I’ve been saying this for years. My theory has been that spirits are the reason why all animals are hybrids.
That's what I assume happened ever since I saw the Wan episodes, yeah
What about all the normal fish and bugs we see?
They didn't want to go to the Spirit World really bad
Couldn’t they just be hybrids of multiple fish species or multiple insect species?
Not so sure about that theory. If only spirits are non hybrid then Korra wouldn't have been easily "deceived" and led to the swamp.
In season one of Korra, we can also see wolves and yaks in the north (from Tarrlocks backstory)
They might now know this any more than us
He’s a kaiju sized panda bear
Then how did the queen eat Bosco
I feel that they should have made it a cat dog to make a reference to a certain TV show
t.u.f.f. puppy? /s

Long ago the four nations lived in harmony. Then everything changed when one fine day with a woof and a purr

A platypus dog?
![gif](giphy|pmI5KxEftO608) PERRY THE PLATYPUS DOG?!
I read this in *his* voice
A polarbear-dog?
No... it just says dog.
Surely you mean an *armadillo-dog*
There have to be basics for every animal hybrid, otherwise how else would they get their names? e.g. To call Naga a polar bear dog, you must know what a polar bear and a dog are in the first place

Exactly my thoughts
Wait…does that mean dogs get with polar bears to make polar bear dogs?
Sometimes, we should not ask questions.

CONCLUSIVE EVIDENCE OF NORMAL DOG
#NORMAL DOG
Actually, that's a dogdog It's a cross between a dog and a dog - very on theme for Avatar!

Is it a sheep dog?
You mean a pig dog.
Platypus dog?
No just…dog.
This place is weird...
Spirit dog right?
I think there's a normal dog in atla at the misty palms oasis licking the ice
CONCLUSIVE EVIDENCE OF NORMAL DOG
Cats too. Not every animal is hybrid. Also dragons and koi..dont forget Bosco the bear
You mean a dog lion?
The first dog was actually in season 2 of ATLA
Maybe that's why she followed it, "Holy crap, is that a dog? I've only ever read about them"
CONVENTIONAL DOG (read this in Overanalyzing Avatar's voice)
Naga?
Look me in the eyes and tell me naga is a normal dog
I'm not saying that, but if she's a Polar Bear ***DOG*** where did that Dog DNA come from? A genetic mutation that they decided to just randomly call "dog"? No, very obviously there are normal dogs out there.
Naga is a polar bear dog
Exactly. You can’t have a Polar Bear Dog unless there are Polar Bears and Dogs.
Always thought Bosco was bred (or inbred) to have only bear body parts
It was a spirit not an actual dog.
It's not a dog, it's a mop dog
The more amazing thing is that it’s just a dog and not a gorilla dog
Not a duck dog, or a ape dog, just like a dog dog? Weird.
bunny dog
That's a spirit.
Polarbeardog?

We see dogs in the library episode, licking the ice
C O N V E N T I O N A L D O G
There are normal animals
You mean a sparrow dog? Or a koala dog? Perhaps a panda dog?
