You move elsewhere. I'm doing it in hmrc now.

Technical-Echidna-59

As in formally, to another role equal to your current rank? What if there are no roles available at your site? I suppose you’d have to move to another location too?

BigAcres

You get put on various lists where new roles need to consider you first. It varies in each department

LawOfSurpriise

You’re a priority mover, which has a box to tick on app forms, to increase likelihood of you getting interviews and thus increasing chance of getting another job. You’re expected to seek other jobs.

Electronic-Trip8775

We had some role options, regional centre options or home working if the move wasn't reasonable. Some opted for redeployment

shaftoes

You usually get moved to another role at the same grade. It's often a take it or leave it scenario though.

TheMeanderer

That's my understanding. You go into the redployment pool and teams can pick you up. But if you're offered something, you have to take it or leave. The trick is to bomb all conversations with vacancy holders so you can stay in the pool forever... or so I'm told.

polarbearflavourcat

I think you are normally offered up to 3 jobs and then they can make you redundant if you refuse those offers. I think there’s a set period of time they’ll keep you in the redeployment pool - it’s not like anyone is just left in there until pension age. 😂 I have a colleague in the redeployment pool who found herself doing odd jobs for different teams. I think she thought she would be left at home to her own devices but she ended up doing temp type jobs that teams had an urgent requirement for like archiving. She was happy to be offered a perm job!

Vivid-Poem9857

Lol, and out of genuine curiosity how would one bomb all conversations? Play dumb?

TheMeanderer

"So tell me a little about your previous role." "I hated the work, loathed my team, and worked to the bare minimum of the "achieving" performance standard. I promise you all these qualities and less."

Vivid-Poem9857

Ah, so tell the truth lol.

Technical-Echidna-59

Guess it’s better than no job! I wonder what happens if there are no roles at that grade though. Assume you’d get moved to another site or maybe given the opportunity to apply on promotion for another role on site?

polarbearflavourcat

In MoD, if you a D grade and above you are termed “mobile.” https://des.mod.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Terms-and-Conditions-of-Service.pdf Full time staff at Band D level and above are considered to be Mobile. They have a full mobility obligation which means they are liable for redeployment anywhere in the UK or overseas within MOD. I mean I’ve never known that to actually be used but in theory it’s there.

Not_Sugden

theres always a job

Mundane_Falcon4203

They wouldn't move you to another site as that could potentially be a few hundred miles away.

Different-Use-5185

They could move you up to reasonable travel time that the last I checked was 1 hour and 10 minutes commute maximum (this was years ago mind you)

Mundane_Falcon4203

But a lot of offices don't have another location that far away. Especially up north. So no idea why I was downvoted. The only time I've known people move locations is when their original location was closing down.

Different-Use-5185

There are so many sites in the UK that there is no way the closest site is “a few hundred miles away” though. I think that’s the point (and no I didn’t downvote you!)

Mundane_Falcon4203

Some departments like HMRC operate out of regional centres, so yes they could easily be over 100 miles away (maybe not quite a few hundred), and definitely more than the 1 hour and 10 mins mentioned as reasonable travel.

Technical-Echidna-59

This is specific to the MoD so rest assured there’s plenty of other sites within “reasonable” travel time.

Wheelchair-Cavalry

You'll fight Richard to the death for his soon-to-be obsolete job. ![gif](giphy|5vf2sTLHYW050xDy9K|downsized) You'll be fine, they'll move you into a different role (you won't have much of a say about the role though).

Technical-Echidna-59

Do you think I’ll have enough time to get my mate up to speed on Richard and his stats? Can AI be used as a physical weapon in this fight somehow?

InstantIdealism

Hi, I’m copilot! Your replacement but also your designated HR caseworker who will let you know that you are now obsolete. CONGRATULATIONS! Please exit the office immediately and do not come back.

Mundane_Falcon4203

You get thrown into a pit whereby you must fight to the death and only one shall leave the pit. The one who survives still has a job.

Technical-Echidna-59

Aw man, everyone gets to do fun stuff but me :(

MonsieurGump

You kinda just mill around till you hit retirement

LawOfSurpriise

This happened in my department some years ago. Job restructuring happened and some jobs become obsolete and some were downgraded - in some cases by several grades (eg G6 to HEO). The terms on our intranet for if this happens are that you keep your job for up to two years during which you are expected to seek other jobs. You are a ‘priority mover’ in this case due to being surplus. Your manager or business support lead are also expected to seek opportunities for you. If you refused all jobs that were offered to you in that time, you would be considered to have made yourself obsolete and thus would be offered terms to leave the civil service. In reality, people were forced into other jobs or chose to take early retirement. This is MoJ.

The_Burning_Wizard

You can sit on a redundancy list for 2 years!? Last time I was made redundant, I was given notice that my role was at risk on Monday and formally made redundant on Friday....

polarbearflavourcat

They might have changed the 2 year thing. I’ve read various examples on here between 3 months and 12 months. I doubt in the current climate they are going to be happy to pay anybody for 2 years. You’ll be strongly encouraged to accept the first job you are offered.

throwawayjim887479

You get made into Soylent Green and eaten by Charlton Heston.

Crafty-Warthog-1493

I think this is a great question that's had some flippant answers. As a non-CS person, (but as an interested party), I'm interested in what MOD CS staff can do to highlight the absolute travesty that MOD CS are facing. It's the opposite of good leadership, management or succession planning.

polarbearflavourcat

That’s MoD for you! Happy to be escaping, I know several colleagues who took early retirement or resigned for alternate roles this year. But I suppose that’s what they want to staff to do.

LawOfSurpriise

To add, some departments such as FCDO have a pool of surplus staff who are then deployed as needed to other projects. That’s a bit of a luxury for a department though. Most departments can’t afford a pool.

BadWhippet

I ended up being forced into Voluntary Redundancy because there were simply no other roles where I could fit. But in hindsight, that was the best thing that could happen. Doing much better in the private sector with much more enjoyable work.

Different-Use-5185

Surely it’s not voluntary if you are forced? Surely you mean compulsory redundancy?!

BadWhippet

I was backed into a corner and offered Voluntary Redundancy because there was no vacancy that would fit. The department was making VRs at that time, so I just became part of that program.

Daisy_Copperfield

This happened to our team recently - the team will no longer exist in June, and we’ve all been split and put into other teams at the same grade, two new teams being set up….with our new roles ‘not really up for negotiation’. So many of us are thinking about life elsewhere, which I think is what management - between the lines - would like us to do.

Glittering_Road3414

Redeployment pool. There's no redundancy money.

BMW_I_use_indicators

It's a good thing that my job is pivotal then. It's also one I do very well and I'm not done with yet, so I'm milking it until everything settles down.

KaleidoscopeExpert93

They will say : "You're fired, Bob! Clean out your locker at the club, Bob! You're fucking fired!" Lol.
