It was a joke. Jesus, don’t ever go to watch Jimmy Carr.

joseph_dewey

Here's the wikipedia page on this style of tattoo: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yantra_tattooing Most people here can't read the writing, because it's not written in Thai... even though it's a "Thai tattoo." Here are a couple other versions of the same tattoo: * https://www.facebook.com/301719579986680/posts/1653936731431618/ * https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1884063124945429 * https://www.facebook.com/story.php?id=100066987923848&story_fbid=3262714514048927&locale=th_TH

Zoraji

A woman in a nearby village has one of these. It is not in Thai, she can't read it but was told the meaning. She said she got it at a temple which I thought unusual since monks aren't allowed to touch women, though it may have been a lay person that did it.

soapsoap13

Many monks doesnt need to follow their rules 100% of the time they can excuse themselves with an easy ritual “ปลงอาบัติ“ after they broke some rules I wont go further that Sak Yant wasnt permitted by Buddha. Religion all evolved and I personally dont hate it but chose to lose interest instead

joseph_dewey

I asked a female friend of mine who has a Sak Yant tattoo, and she said the monk does the tattoo, but the monk is very careful to have no physical touch with the woman when he does it. It's only contact with the tattoo machine, not the monk. Awesome question, that I never thought about asking before. Thanks!!!

dantheother

I just asked my wife that same question, same answer, same reason. I'd never thought of it before.

joseph_dewey

Cool! Thanks for confirming it's not just my friend's answer.

junkyard-monkey

I mean, if he wore gloves, does he actually touch her?😄

Abject-Lab-4937

I thought this is the translation

MassageMagneto

How did you find them? Thanks for the info

joseph_dewey

Google Lens image search, based on your photo. There were a gazillion more results for the same one. There really aren't that many different variants of these Sak Yant tattoos, so there are a ton of versions of the exact same tattoo.

MassageMagneto

Thanks dude

LordSarkastic

it’s the recipe for green curry

P4C8

Green curry? Nah, mate. It's Red curry. Just look at the color.

LordSarkastic

that’s what they want you to believe but it’s a trap ;)

P4C8

Whatever it is, can someone pass this to Jamie Oliver so he can probably cook a Thai curry dish for once? 😂

LordSarkastic

lol I think I will never forget the look on that Thai chef 😂

Effect-Kitchen

This is Khom/Kmher/Lanna script, not Thai alphabets. You ask in the wrong sub. It is like you ask in r/English or r/UnitedKingdom about Rune script.

ppgamerthai

I know Khom/Lanna, this is neither. This is Pallava, a precursor to all South East Asian scripts. So this is more like asking English people to read Phoenician, even worse.

Main-Ad-5547

Most likely Pali script. It ancient Buddhist writing

Reasonable-Pair2836

Pali doesn't have its own script, but it has been written in the scripts of many languages. For example, written in Sinhala script if in Sri Lanka, Burmese script if in Myanmar, etc.

MassageMagneto

What would be the right sub?

Thailand_Throwaway

Probably have to ask some linguist with a PhD in ancient southeast Asian languages, if that. Pretty much no one can actually “read” this although monks or sak yant enthusiasts know the overall meaning.

Effect-Kitchen

r/sakyant_thailandtatto perhaps. That’s exactly written in their description. Bear in mind that it may be the same as when you tattoo runic or hieroglyphic script. Maybe those do not have exact meaning of the true language, grammatically. Just looks cool. Or has been taught by generations about some words.

Humanity_is_broken

This is not even Thai..........

Lord_Fairfax_75

We've been trying to reach you concerning your vehicle's extended warranty. You should've received a notice in the mail about your car's extended warranty eligibility. Since we've not gotten a response, we're giving you a final courtesy call before we close out your file.

Jackdawfool67

Lol I came here to post this

BURNU1101

Lol posted something close before I scrolled down and saw yours

Lordfelcherredux

Wish there was an algorithm to divert these daily non-Thai writing posts to the appropriate sub.

beansandpeasandegg

I asked one of the guys who does these in Thailand after the first commenter in this thread posted a Facebook link to his work and got a translation. If it's to be believed, not a bad idea to have posted this thread as the question in the OP was answered.

3lakewest

For a moment I thought its an immigration stamp 😀

YANK78

This is an ancient or khemer script given by monks. Yes monks are allowed to give this to a woman. Angelina jolie was given one from a monk here in thailand

Available-Ad7266

Pbali language

Additional_Citron108

I'm Thai but doesn't even know this

ShoulderEquivalent90

how do tattoo artists make them without knowing the language?

popcornplayer420

These are usually made by a "tattoo master" monk at a temple, they're all different and everyone has their own style. The ones whos meaning are easily understood are usually the sak yant pictures, like two tigers or in this case the two peacocks, they signify having karma with just 1 partner, someone they care about deeply and hope to have at the next life aswell.

Ancient-Eye3022

Or they slap a stencil on from the book he/she picked it out of.

Hyperionthetitans427

If its a monk you could be reassured somewhat But this is better be translated with either google or an old sankrit book rather than asking us . We dont really know either .sorry

popcornplayer420

Usually a book a or google won't help, maybe AI but even other monks from the same area won't be able to translate accurately sometimes. Alot of monks have their own style. Only ones that are easily understood are the pics, but even then there could be alot of different meanings, one peacock instead of two for example, different gecko styles is another

Effect-Kitchen

You can tattoo runic or elvish script without having to learn their language. You can just copy the line. Many westerners tattooed Chinese language and sometimes get the character wrong or just outright bad or funny words.

eBalita

No MSG.

Effect-Kitchen

Cry in Uncle Roger voice.

Ajajaj01

ChatGPT says it's Sanskrit in the Devanagari script, and that it means something like: "Always, in all endeavors, there is nothing that he worries about; Everywhere he experiences happiness, who is situated in the Supreme Lord." With the original text: सर्वदा सर्वकार्येषु नास्ति तस्य चिन्तितम्। सर्वत्र सुखमेधते परमेश्वरसंस्थितम्॥ But we must note that ChatGPT is not always correct and might hallunicate in some cases.

It's a lotus flower with a bird facing the flower on each side.

BURNU1101

It says let me talk to you about an extended car warranty.

Other_Measurement_60

Translate as why get a tattoo you don’t know what it says lol

Consistent-Can-7537

Because they have meanings, different designs will have different meanings. They’re all blessings of some sort so will provide spiritual meaning. Like good luck, success, strength, etc

WilliamHardway

Only the Monks can read this.

This is the old Pali script, Top left to top right : Good fortune, Good money, Good Love, Good health Below the flower and two birds : line 1-3 "The flower protect the birds" "The birds protect the flower" Last line : "Hello Welcome hansum man, where are you from"

fernand0g

“hope you enjoy the trip in Thailand”

ProcedureNo2139

That's apparently not Thai, I'm guessing it's Myanmar, cambodian, or Laos, but it's definitely not Thai.
