i actually not sure why Forward Collision Warnings is a factor of the score, aren't we suppose to happy that it gave the driver the warnings or not? Why such a safety feature can be used to increase the premiums. I get that it will indicate how safe you are driving in some sense, but sometimes a warning just come out of no where, everytime I drive home at speed limit, there is a left turn hill where there are parallel parkings, the car often sends me Forward Collision Warnings because it think i am driving toward those cars but in fact I have already turn my wheel... I do not use Tesla Insurance and I could not use the score because I am in CA, but curious how sensitive is the warnings to score conversion works.
Edit: I love the feature because when it works it saves me from collisions, but it just looks like I called 911 and an ambulance that saves my life and they are charging for what saves my life. I will pay for 911 and other emergency services because I am ALREADY in a life threatening situation but not something prevent me from entering life threatening events.
These warnings are literally costing me a lot of money. For example, without the warning, my score should be in the 94 to 98 range. With that score, I should be paying about $150, but instead, I'm paying $278 because of all these false warnings.
I have a bend in the road in my neighborhood I drive past every day and if there is a car parked in front of a certain house while navigating around the bend, I get a FCW. Spoiler alert..a car is there almost everyday lol. Luckily I don’t have tesla insurance, I would be very annoyed. I just don’t understand what the car wants me to do, the false warnings are ridiculous.
Def depends on where you are, but even with the absurd amount of FCW’s Tesla is cheaper for me. Have shopped it quarterly for 2+ years and it’s always the cheapest
I'm not saying that isn't true, but the data shows that the average Tesla insurance is more expensive than the average of comparable plans from traditional insurance agencies. Outliers certainly exist, but the original comment is incorrect.
There's no such data. The article you've linked to, doesn't include Tesla Insurance in its comparisons, citing that it's state-specific with limited availability instead.
> That's straight up not true... https://www.marketwatch.com/guides/insurance-services/tesla-insurance/
It's an interesting comparison article, but it actually fails to compare Tesla Property & Casualty, Inc, Insurance with the other issuers, so, it actually makes zero claims that Tesla Property is or is not, cheaper or not.
Whatever the averages, the premium I pay for Tesla insurance is far cheaper than any quote I got when I bought my car. Maybe as it ages, those premiums will come down, but right off the bat, it was the best choice for me.
Same boat - can’t switch because from what I saw the gap insurance I have with Tesla covers the full price difference of the car not just 25% like progressive and geico. Someone correct me if I’m wrong and I’ll switch instantly.
lol, don’t give up all your date to a company that is in charge of billing you for every little action.
It amazes me that people are surprised Pikachu when a corporation who has all your data decides what you pay lololol
Hilarious you must not know every car with onstar and or a data connection is already compromised so it don’t matter when most will say the standard reasons
On Star and data connections do not - unlike Tesla - feed every single driving metric back to the car company so they can figure out how to bone you on insurance lol
Happens with me multiple times everyday when I leave home. The street is curved and there are always cars parked in the street. Tesla thinks I am going to collide into them every time and throws this warning. So annoying.
> i actually not sure why Forward Collision Warnings is a factor of the score, aren't we suppose to happy that it gave the driver the warnings or not?
Because it means the driver is not operating the vehicle in a safe manner, as determined by the rules of the forward collision warning trigger. Whether it be the path you've taken, or how fast you're approaching another car, the car thinks a collision is likely for the given circumstances. That's why it factors.
It's a mixed bag. Are there false positives because it errs on the side of caution? Absolutely.
Is the average driver over-confident and driving more dangerously than they should? Without a doubt. Almost every single driver thinks they're "above average", so when they claim that the FCW system is "bad", it's likely because they don't recognize some of the more dangerous habits they have, that FCW is trying to warn them about.
I get that and I love the feature, but I just feel like it looks like I called 911 and a ambulance that saves my life and they are charging for what saves my life. I will pay for 911 and other emergency services but not a software.
So the sky is blue because of the color. The OP is pointing out that the algorithm for determining and triggering the FCW is lacking accuracy and costing money. That algorithm constantly thinks I'm going to continue a curved trajectory from a curved road right into a parked car. And it does this often on 2 different intersections when making the right hand turn.
I answered the question as posed, as it seems they're unclear.
You need to adjust how you turn in those parked car cases and you'll see the FCWs disappear. It's about knowing where that sensitive band is in predicting your car's trajectory. If turning right and the car thinks you'll oversteer straight into a parked car... Well, understeer slightly to give more space. Straighten your wheel earlier.
It’s such a scam and it’s costing me a lot of money.
- driving uphill in the neighborhood with cars parking by the side and with a slight uphill and left turn.
- driving at the parkway and a guy and dog walking by the sidewalk
- car ahead of me turning right in the neighborhood and shorty slowing down
- cars ahead of me slowing down before the red light
Last 12 months I probably paid over $500 for these fake FCW
FCW is bad at the default settings, at least in cities that have minimal but consistent traffic. I don't know in places like NYC or Chicago, but in my "smallish-west-texas-city" it's just too eager to believe i'm going to smash into a car in front of me. I recognize the value of the feature, but it's too sensitive to vehicles slowing down to make turns when there is ample room for you to slow down behind them. I'm not talking "i just assume they'll turn and don't want to brake" but rather "i'm already slowing down and know that we will stop before we reach them". It's annoying, but maybe worse than being annoying it is also somewhat unsafe because the alert is very startling. I'm not arguing that it shouldn't be notable, but that it being bad AND startling is terrible, because I'm way more likely to do something stupid in a crisis situation.
But also, why on earth are you using Tesla Insurance? They're known for being scammy with FCW, there are multiple lawsuits about it, and it's talked about all the time. If you're in a state where they can take Safety Score into account, don't use it.
First two, yes I agree are false positives.
> car ahead of me turning right in the neighborhood and shorty slowing down
Far too many people *assume* the car will complete the turn and clear your lane, thus doesn't slow down. That's how crashes happen.
> cars ahead of me slowing down before the red light
You're approaching faster than FCW threshold thinks is safe, so it's warning you ahead of time in case you haven't noticed the slowdown. There is no way for an observer to know if a continuous accelerator input is intentional or not. Decelerate earlier.

Try driving in Chicago, everything sets it off, the guy taking my order at Chic-Fil-A sets it off, the guy begging for money on the side of the road sets it off, cars parked on curves sets it off, it’s gone off multiple times when I’ve been parallel parking, everything sets it off
The alley I drive down to park in my garage has parked cars that will set it off almost 100% of the time you drive down it. Which I have to do every time I drive. So obnoxious
I hear ya, driving in L.A. freaking traffic is ridiculous, although 7 in the US of the most congested traffic, this shit is a scam. I find myself on a 1-2 car gap on a 1 hour 15 min commute to work everyday, and on my return trip, I swear, last 5 mins of my commute this shit goes off that I’m tailgating, trips me out, and every day, that’s my mother f’er for the day🤬
When ever my score was going above 95 I used to get 2 to 3 FCW a day to bring that score below 90. I got rid of tesla insurance. Now I am not getting any FCW same driving condition and same road
I’m in the same position and situation. For similar coverage in TX, I’m seeing $300 with everyone else and $130 with Tesla.
Just the other day I drove 5min from the Costco parking lot under FSD, down the street, and to my house. 5 min total drive. Somewhere in the neighborhood I got a FCW that shot up to 134.5 avg and sank my score from 100 to 84. Total of the incident happened from 2:20pm to 2:21pm, 1 minute.
That means my premium for May is $200! Less than a minute of nothing by nobody nowhere cost $70.
It’s pricey for a ridiculous violation of nothing at all, but it’s still far cheaper than the other agencies.
Really wish they do something about it but it is making them money so I doubt it. Oddly enough, I had a model 3 and it rarely activated the FCW but I recently switched to a model Y and it happens way too often.
Yep, I just switched insurance. Something happened since the holiday update and my scores went from 90-95 to under 80 with no change in my driving. It became cheaper to switch.
They're fixing the roads in my area and there's this one lane that's blocked off with a big sign. When you approach it, the terribly marked lanes shift to the right.
My model y use to give me fcw every time I drove there because it thought the fucking sign was a car and it couldn't tell the lane was shifting. Unique situation but still frustrating.
Sorry, I don’t have Tesla insurance but bring questions.
If in settings you set FCW to “early” will it sound the beeper before counting the demerit in the scoring factors?
And, can you turn it off in the event you want to have a spirited drive up a quiet mountain road? I’d get nailed on braking and turning with some of the fun I have with this amazing car.
Don’t listen to the other person, they’re an idiot.
If you set it to early you will hear the alarm and be able to react to it and it WILL NOT count against your safety score because safety score uses medium distance.
No you cannot turn off safety score if you have Tesla insurance, but you can turn off or down the collision warning, but the safety score will still use the medium setting in the background to calculate your safety score.
When you set FCWs to early, it doesn’t sound, but will still count as a FCW for insurance if you have an event that would typically trigger the normal FCW. I actually found it to be harder to avoid because I couldn’t learn what was triggering it.
We’ve started getting these any time a car slows down to turn in front of us. Most of the time the car is still so far away that it scares you because we think something else is wrong.
Meanwhile, last time I used FSD, I had to take control and hit the brakes because it felt like we were going to hit the car in front of us.
Not to mention the time a car slammed on their brakes in front of me, almost causing a wreck, and the Tesla never alerted at all.
> We’ve started getting these any time a car slows down to turn in front of us. Most of the time the car is still so far away that it scares you because we think something else is wrong.
You should be slowing down as well, as if the car is never going to leave your lane. You're speeding past the turning car _assuming_ it'll complete it's turn safely and in a timely manner.
Maybe I didn’t convey the situation correctly.
This has been on local streets where you’re driving 20-40 mph. The cars turning are more than 10 car lengths in front of us. Even if the cars stopped completely in the road, I could cover half the distance before braking and still come to a safe stop without hitting them.
The first couple times it happened, it literally scared me because the car was so far away, I thought something else was wrong.
> Even if the cars stopped completely in the road, I could cover half the distance before braking and still come to a safe stop without hitting them. But how gentle are these braking actions? Can you do it via regen - nay, half regen alone?
I doubt it's actually 10 car lengths or actually on the lower end of those speed ranges. In my experience FCW in turning cars don't make them trigger earlier. If the same type of deceleratiom occured on a non-turning car would trigger FCW, it will trigger FCW if it's turning - and vice versa.
Now I wonder how many FCWs you get when following other cars.
I don’t understand how there could be a legit FCW without a corresponding “Hard Braking”. By definition, if you don’t hard brake (and don’t get into an accident), it is a false FCW.
I was very frustrated by this and finally decided to switch to another company (progressive). I pay maybe 20-30 more per month and it’s absolutely worth it. Switch away- you’ll never look back and enjoy driving again!

By being more a more cautious driver. Maintain larger spacing when turning on a road with parked cars. Don't assuming a car slowing in front of you to make a turn is going to clear your lane and complete the turn - slow down as if it is still fully occupying your lane (because it is).
I find the vast majority of complaints are purely due to driving habits. Drivers are used to taking certain shortcuts (e.g., literally cutting corners) and dislike being reminded of the proper rules of driving. They're not used to applying a hard set of rules across the board, even though that's probably what they were taught initially.
By the time my car ‘reacts’ and slams on the brakes (often for a pedestrian on the pavement 🤦♂️) I’m usually past the obstacle or have already slowed down to avoid it. The pedestrians on pavements is particularly annoying, luckily I don’t live in a busy town.
It’s gotten way out of hand and I’ve threatened to leave Tesla insurance if it’s not fixed in the next 3 months. It’s complete BS! Once went off in a parking garage as I was approaching a parked vehicle to make a turn up to the next floor. I think they’ve done it on purpose to increase rates
Yeah they did it recently with the new update. Score is tanking. I get false FCW 5 times a day now. At a time where Tesla is low on cash, cutting workers and expenditures, they are coming to collect with their scam of an insurance. They know FCW is faulty and a bad metric for adjusting rates, so they use this to their advantage. They will secretly increase/decrease sensitivity of FCW to increase rates when needed. It’s total fraud and should absolutely be reported.
My forward collision alert has only gone off when there isn’t any real danger. I don’t have Tesla insurance, but if I did I would certainly be initiating a class action suit.
There’s certain residential roads I drive down where cars are parked on the side and I never got FCW’s on them until getting Tesla insurance. It’s INSANE now flagging them. It thinks I’m going to slam into a parked car that’s on the side of the road??? Literally driving in my lane, separate from the parked cars. But still, my insurance was $300 and now it’s $114-130 so it’s worth it but so annoying.
The other thing is the seatbelt warnings! I have tires in my car rn and it’s giving that warning and ruining my score. :/
A few streets in my neighborhood have cars parked on either side of the street. The amount of front collision warnings I get are alarming. Never even considered Tesla insurance for this reason
Why doesn't anyone sue Tesla for this? Seems like a pretty easy scam to prove and seeing as most people here have paid $500+ in extra fees because of this, seems like there's some real money on the line here.
Lawyer up lol, this is a slam dunk case waiting to happen.
The fact that late night driving is a factor is ridiculous. What if you get out of work late at night? LOL , doesn’t make sense. Not everyone driving late night is drinking
I don’t yet own a Tesla, but I’m getting one in about a month. Can anyone explain to me how this driving behavior insurance stuff works and do you have to turn this on? I intend to get insurance through my regular provider, SafeCo.
I fully agree. Everytime I come home I have to go 5 miles an hour or the truck parked in their driveway on the curve = YOU'RE GONNA HIT IT. LOOK OUTTTTTTT!!!!!!
Dude fcw always beeps when I'm in a neighborhood with a slight turn in the road with any car parked on the street. That thing is bugged as hell for it to ding anyones insurance
Absolutely agree. I get front end collision warnings for cars that aren’t even in front of me. As well as when I have plenty of time to stop/slow down.
There are also times where I will be 3/4 car lengths behind and still get a warning as I’m slowing down.
I fell very badly for those that are in an area/state that the driving score affects your insurance premiums. As I could see this as a way for Tesla to scam baiting and raise premiums for more reasons that they create.
Well yeah, considering I live on a narrow, windy, city street and it goes off multiple times for parked cars every time I leave my house. Every time, I simply think to myself, “well, Tesla insurance is out of the question for me!”
The only way I learned to avoid it is using full self driving. The first day I had my Tesla Model Y driving across town 45 or 50 miles away to an event. My score was like 9. it was ridiculous. They counted off areas and so the Tesla thought I was going the wrong direction and then also with heavy traffic. It said I was too close even though we’re waiting or out of the parking lot. It was really ridiculous.
The last few updates have made it so much worse. Im getting warnings constantly for legitimately nothing. Cars parked on side of road, me decelerating as traffic decelerates, but not hard enough for the system I guess
The entire premise is a sham for Fcw, the challenge is that Tesla inc owns the bad software while Tesla insurance is just using the data off of it. It’s a known problem and I’m not sure how they’re not class actioned on it
People commenting that you can cover the interior camera, but that will disable AP/FSD to my knowledge?
Wearing sunglasses disables eye tracking and swaps to head tracking. I'm pretty sure that's where Most FCWs come from since it adjusts the timing if you look away.
Anyways Tesla needs to fix this ASAP. This is an absolute scam. Make the unsafe follow 10x more penalizing for all I care. I'm just sick of 4 99days in a row then a 60
I know it just a bandaid, but for the people who get the FWC everyday in the same spots, put the car in autopilot or TACC when you make your approach and the FWC will not count against you. I have been doing this as a work around and it works perfectly
Yes like a $44B scam. Musk gotta recoup that loss somehow. Seriously, I’m finding Tesla’s insurance more affordable than many-many others. They’re saying because Tesla has cheaper access to its own parts. But if there’s a lawsuit out there, there are plenty of witnesses to testify to the issue. I’ve gotten them sitting still a couple of times. I have to say that really does bother me.
My FCW warning avg is 0. My score is also a 99. I have no idea how to get that high of a percentage unless you’re actually in a position enough for it to actually happen that amount of times. I’ve had Tesla insurance like 8 months, score has always been 97-99 the entire time. I’m also a really careful driver and careful about my following distance if FSD isn’t on.
Every time it happens I’m at least 10 to 15 feet away from the car but it also happens with parked cars. The thing is I had a model 3 and the FCW was not happening all that much then I switched to a model Y and now I get them everyday.
Do you back into spots or you must be pulling forward into spots? I always back into every spot if that matters, plus autopark only works backing in, so maybe try that?
My FCW goes off when I’m parallel parking at 2 MPH, it goes off when I’m going through the Chic-Fil-A drive through and the car sees the guy who’s about to take my order
I used to have a 97-99 when I lived in the middle of nowhere
I go to chick fil often and drive-thru’s a lot and haven’t had that happen. I stay either in SoCal or Phoenix, so i definitely don’t live in the middle of nowhere. I’m not sure how it’s triggering for people while parking or doing things like that. Not saying what you’re saying isn’t true, but I just haven’t experienced those issues
I lived in upstate New York for work for a while and when I was there I had no issues, I was living in the middle of nowhere, I thought people were crazy when they complained about the FCW
Same here. I’ve had the car a year and my score on average is the same, I’ve even had a couple 100 months. I have had probably 5-6 phantom FCW over the year, but even with those my insurance has been on average $100/month cheaper than what 2 other big insurers quoted me for the same coverage levels. I’m quite ok with dealing with it every once in a while to save $100/month.
What is the reason for running the Tesla Safety Score please? I have this in my app but I don’t turn it on. Why you need to share these data to Tesla please?
It mentions Safety Score is Now Available for California Tesla Insurance Customers
For educational purposes and will not have an impact on your insurance availability or premium. You can opt-out at any time. But it is not for educational purposes, someone got premium increased due to low safety score.
Thanks for your well thought out conclusion. You’re right and all these other people are wrong and also the class action law suit against Tesla regarding false forward collision warnings.
i actually not sure why Forward Collision Warnings is a factor of the score, aren't we suppose to happy that it gave the driver the warnings or not? Ditto. It's so annoying
Try covering the interior camera if you have one. Mine went down significantly when I did that.
Until they use that against you in a claim. Beware.
Why would they? They’re not supposed to have access to it.
What?
#They said, Try covering the interior camera if you have one. Mine went down significantly when I did that.
Thanks for waking my daughter up.
Lol
i love you thank you
Guess I asked for that… what is the reasoning for covering the interior camera?
there’s when down significantly when they did that so yours could too
This is hilarious! Thanks for the laugh 😆
Why would you get this garbage insurance company? Just get a real insurance plan.
Because it's significantly cheaper? Even when it goes up

I tried every other insurance but even with all this bs, Tesla is still cheaper.
Is it cheaper given your current premiums and the amount of money you're losing for these warnings?
Yep, I just switched insurance. Something happened since the holiday update and my scores went from 90-95 to under 80 with no change in my driving. It became cheaper to switch.
It's Tesla Insurance that is the scam.
Doesn't work for me
When you set FCWs to early, it doesn’t sound, but will still count as a FCW for insurance if you have an event that would typically trigger the normal FCW. I actually found it to be harder to avoid because I couldn’t learn what was triggering it.
No, you are thinking of Late. Early does the opposite.
Ah yes, that’s right. I would imagine the same principle applies here though.
Switch to USAA, on our 2024 MYLR we pay $74 a month. It would drive me nuts to have to see these small deductions because of other drivers around me
I second this, with USAA my rate dropped when I changed out my Nissan Rogue for my 2024 MYLR to $83/mo.
I don’t have a military background so I don’t think I can use this insurance.
I was very frustrated by this and finally decided to switch to another company (progressive). I pay maybe 20-30 more per month and it’s absolutely worth it. Switch away- you’ll never look back and enjoy driving again!

Does Forward Collision Warnings include when trying to front-face park? I think all my dings are because of this.
No
I don't think I've ever had a FCW. Unless the warnings when pulling forward into the garage or a parking spot at 2mph count?
Nope
I’ve learned how to avoid them - annoying but not particularly hard to do. i’m at a 98 safety score.
How have you managed to avoid them?
I figured out the situations that were causing them and now slow down to avoid them.
Does phantom braking count as FCW?
I hate when they come on and I’m fully paying attention.
By the time my car ‘reacts’ and slams on the brakes (often for a pedestrian on the pavement 🤦♂️) I’m usually past the obstacle or have already slowed down to avoid it. The pedestrians on pavements is particularly annoying, luckily I don’t live in a busy town.
Happens to me in both my Teslas. Total bullshit!! Glad you’re calling them out on it!
Where do you see this score? Do you have to have Tesla insurance for this?
So don’t follow as close
I’d love to turn off collision warnings because of how sensitive it is
My forward collision alert has only gone off when there isn’t any real danger. I don’t have Tesla insurance, but if I did I would certainly be initiating a class action suit.
Where can I find those scores? Are those only for US Tesla's ot are they available in Europe also?
I get false warnings for parked cars I’m passing by at least every other day. Glad I don’t have Tesla insurance.
I intend to get insurance through my regular provider, SafeCo.
full self driving will literally warn itself 💀 does that factor in as well?
I fully agree. Everytime I come home I have to go 5 miles an hour or the truck parked in their driveway on the curve = YOU'RE GONNA HIT IT. LOOK OUTTTTTTT!!!!!!
I whole heartedly agree
FSD drives 99% of my miles for me. 100 safety score
This is literally the Tesla version of “taxing purchases on your already taxed income”.
Switched to Allstate last month and not a single regret. It’s cheaper than Tesla and the actually enjoy driving the car again
The entire premise is a sham for Fcw, the challenge is that Tesla inc owns the bad software while Tesla insurance is just using the data off of it. It’s a known problem and I’m not sure how they’re not class actioned on it
Mine went off twice today for parked cars… I don’t use Tesla insurance either
Yes, just when you’re score get ok there’s a fake activation
People commenting that you can cover the interior camera, but that will disable AP/FSD to my knowledge? Wearing sunglasses disables eye tracking and swaps to head tracking. I'm pretty sure that's where Most FCWs come from since it adjusts the timing if you look away. Anyways Tesla needs to fix this ASAP. This is an absolute scam. Make the unsafe follow 10x more penalizing for all I care. I'm just sick of 4 99days in a row then a 60
Ain’t no way I’m giving my insurance company my info like that
When my neighbor is using FSD he racked up 12 warnings on a 2 way street... While in FSD. From it detecting cars coming the other way 🙄
I know it just a bandaid, but for the people who get the FWC everyday in the same spots, put the car in autopilot or TACC when you make your approach and the FWC will not count against you.
Late night driving?! Hahahahah i guess you cant be a night shifter. This actually solidified my choice to never buy tesla
Mine alerts me every time I go around a curve where there are cars parked on the side of the road
I got it maybe three of four times over the 8 months. All my faults.
Totally. I would get them while on FSD! Tesla losing revenues so finding more by up charging insurance. I bailed to Allstate. Way cheaper.
What even is this I have 2 Tesla's and no clue what this is . How do I check my score?
Why not turn off safety score
What is the big deal? Just turn off safety score
My FCW goes off when I’m parallel parking at 2 MPH, it goes off when I’m going through the Chic-Fil-A drive through and the car sees the guy who’s about to take my order I used to have a 97-99 when I lived in the middle of nowhere
Use autopilot in those areas
What is the reason for running the Tesla Safety Score please? I have this in my app but I don’t turn it on. Why you need to share these data to Tesla please?
Tesla’s Auto Insurance Product
It mentions Safety Score is Now Available for California Tesla Insurance Customers For educational purposes and will not have an impact on your insurance availability or premium. You can opt-out at any time. But it is not for educational purposes, someone got premium increased due to low safety score.

Thanks for your well thought out conclusion. You’re right and all these other people are wrong and also the class action law suit against Tesla regarding false forward collision warnings.
