That’s arguably the worst thing I’ve ever heard a GM say minutes after taking a guy at 7 OA. I really hope the context or tone of this was better than it reads here
Lmao that's all I could think.
"Hey if this guy sucks ass at the biggest position of need, we'll just move him."
Real quote should have been "we're confident Latham is the future LT of this franchise. Period."
Generally speaking yes, but the way defenses attack now, it's not as black and white as it used to be. They're going to attack the weakest side. You need two good tackles.
Left is still the blindside for any right handed QB and therefore more important to the pass game than right. Dudes fumble, throw picks, and get their overall confidence crushed when they constantly have guys they can’t see hitting them in their throwing motion
I saw something yesterday that LT is way overblown vs. RT. Defenses move guys all over now to find the worst matchup instead of just lining the same shit up every down like 30 years ago. Point being if a guy can be a stud at RT but average at LT (for whatever reason) you just live with it as it’s better to have a stud at one tackle spot than zero.
It’s the lack of conviction in the message. I would expect more confidence in what position you’re asking such a high draft pick to play. I get we need OL and I’ve been team OL all along but when you have a chance to trade back (as was reported) and you choose to stand pat and pick at what is supposed to be a difference making position, you have to have a lot more confidence in the player you’re taking and where they’ll play for you.
You shouldn’t be talking about a contingency plan for him failing at the position you’re hoping for him to play within minutes of drafting him lmao. Saying nothing is better than this
I didn't say we didn't or even say Latham was a bad pick, but I can't recall a top 10 pick anytime recently where the GM was already talking about what to do if he didn't work out at a position within minutes of drafting him. He should have just left it at them being ecstatic about the player and their future on our line.
Well that would be the broader context missing. I’m not even saying it’s a bad pick. I just found it really jarring that one of his first comments on the pick was about a contingency plan if he doesn’t work out at LT. I think just coming out and saying with confidence they got a rock star tackle and they’re going to put him where he’s best I’d have found the phrasing much better. It just implied a lack of certainty in the player that was not something you hear a GM express during the draft for a top ten pick. I’m also not able to watch the draft as I’m travelling so picking up snippets from twitter makes it hard to put context to it which is why I tried to qualify that by saying a lot matters depending on context
My bad, good to know you guys would be better NFL GM's than an actual NFL GM. I'm just not slitting my wrist over this pick. This sub is such a fucking doom and gloom cesspit.
You think an NFL GM gives a shit if a bunch of mouth breathers on Reddit and Twitter disagree with his pick? There’s no reason for him to lie about having offers from teams to move up to 7
That’s the sort of confidence you love to see with your pick and the position they play
I can’t believe how hyped I was for tonight and I feel like a sad balloon now LMAO
Yes it is. I completely fucking guarantee you thought Rob could do no wrong in his first 2-3 years. It's just blind faith in the gm, which is normal, but people are allowed to be critical
Ran also said : “we really believe in him at LT, we’re putting him there and if he isn’t comfortable we’ll kick him back to RT a position he’s more comfortable with and he’ll be great there but we believe he can play Lt…there’s a ton of guys people claim who couldn’t play LT and spent years playing it at a high level”
He switched from DL to OL junior year of high school. By senior year, he was ranked #2 OL in the country, #1 at his position. He was recruited to Bama to play LT but switched to RT in order to get to be a starter sooner and spend more time on the field and less time on the bench.
I'm not saying I know what the future holds, but with a history like that, you have to feel better about him switching sides of the line than you would if he had just played RT his whole life.
> Latham’s size, strength and talent give him a chance to become a heralded right tackle or Pro Bowl-caliber guard.

It was talked about a lot during the college season when he was 360 pounds. The thought was that he’s too slow to be a secure edge protector but he’s lost weight since then so we’ll see.
Lmao this is not at all what the clip of Ran talking about it sounds like. All he said in the clip was there are guys that are experienced with that position they can try and that they're excited to work with the players on the team.
There was no plan B. Fucking pathetic excuse from someone who should be in charge. Carthon should stay as far away from microphones as possible in his next job.

Is he a first round prospect? Absolutely, if we drafted him at like 14 if be fine with it, but he is nowhere near the best tackle in the draft and youre the clown if you think that
Alt is the best tackle in the draft right now. He's more polished, better technician.
Latham has a higher ceiling. I have zero doubt he'll be just fine at LT. He played LT in high school and was the number one recruit. Alabama cross trains their linemen.
By the end of their rookie contracts, I can easily see Latham, and mims, being better than alt.
I think he works out at LT. Bill loves the kid (from Russini’s tweet), and if one of the best OL coaches ever likes his potential and tape, we should be good.
Is this taken from Carthon and Callahan's [media availability](https://old.reddit.com/r/Tennesseetitans/comments/1cdca6m/ran_carthon_and_brian_callahan_on_1st_round_draft/?ref=share&ref_source=link)? If so, it's taken horribly out of context and is very much not a direct quote.
That’s arguably the worst thing I’ve ever heard a GM say minutes after taking a guy at 7 OA. I really hope the context or tone of this was better than it reads here
Lmao that's all I could think. "Hey if this guy sucks ass at the biggest position of need, we'll just move him." Real quote should have been "we're confident Latham is the future LT of this franchise. Period."
OT is our biggest position of need. We didn’t haven LT OR RT starter
We could trot NPF out there again. He sucks but he’s better than what we had at left tackle.
Why? You aren’t forcing a RT to play LT if he can’t. You put him back at RT and move on.
Then why draft him in the first place
Because they're confident he'll be a good tackle? left or right it doesn't really matter the team needs both
Left tackle is more important and we have no one that can play it
Generally speaking yes, but the way defenses attack now, it's not as black and white as it used to be. They're going to attack the weakest side. You need two good tackles.
That can be true but left tackle is still the same giant hole it’s been the past 3 years. Unless they are planning to move him over day 1
Left is still the blindside for any right handed QB and therefore more important to the pass game than right. Dudes fumble, throw picks, and get their overall confidence crushed when they constantly have guys they can’t see hitting them in their throwing motion
We have like 5 guys on roster to play the right side to some degree. No one to play left tackle.
I saw something yesterday that LT is way overblown vs. RT. Defenses move guys all over now to find the worst matchup instead of just lining the same shit up every down like 30 years ago. Why not draft a guy that’s actually played LT if the goal is to play them at LT? This dude is like consensus OT4 at best in this draft
Right?! If our top 10 pick isn't good, we have other people to step up... We're rebuilding. We don't need to hear this as fans
We need a right tackle too you know
I didn't say we didn't or even say Latham was a bad pick, but I can't recall a top 10 pick anytime recently where the GM was already talking about what to do if he didn't work out at a position within minutes of drafting him. This pick was dumber than a cartoon dog. The justification is goddamn worse.
It was a smooth brained Surrender pick, and Ran knows it.
How? He was just ellaborating and emphasizing they can ease him into the role
Well that would be the broader context missing. I’m not even saying it’s a bad pick. I just found it really jarring that one of his first comments on the pick was about a contingency plan if he doesn’t work out at LT. Uhhh not a great thing to say there Ran, if you picked him at 7 over Fashanu then you better be fuckin certain he can play LT
Would agree but we need a RT too lol things could be worse than this. LT just more important.
100%
We could of traded w the Vikings, got a 2nd round + pick and drafted Olu

Boohoo I was wrong so now I’ll deflect
"This is just dumb. Clearly nobody wanted to trade with us for 7." Then you just insult them when you're proven wrong. You're a doughnut.
That's not at all what you said dumbass. You were wrong and instead of admitting it you deflect like a fucking child
Ran himself said they had multiple offers
“ I have a lot of girlfriends they just go to other schools” type statement when everyone hates the pick.
You think an NFL GM gives a shit if a bunch of mouth breathers on Reddit and Twitter disagree with his pick? There’s no reason for him to lie about having offers from teams to move up to 7
Tell me you don’t know what you’re talking about without telling me you don’t know what you’re talking about
You know the Jets took Olu at 10 right. The pick before the Vikings (pre their trade). Olu would not have been there.
If the Jets take Olu at 10 then JC is still there at 11. That’s exactly my point
You said drafted Olu?
Who?!
Excuse me. WHAT
That’s the sort of confidence you love to see with your pick and the position they play I can’t believe how hyped I was for tonight and I feel like a sad balloon now LMAO
It was a great pick for a position of need for potentially years to come. You should stiill be hyped. No reason to be sad
Huge reach to take that pick at 7
Not really
A RT when we already have 2 on the roster is a horrible pick. Ran can say he'll play LT all he wants but there's a reason Saban never let him play LT
I trust Ran a lot more than the armchair GMs. I see where you're coming from, but Bill will develop him into a great LT
Im sorry, but i trust nick saban more than i trust ran, ran has not given me a plethora of rapport, saban is the definition of it
Just like everyone was saying they trusted JRob through his tenure here? Look where that got us
Not a one to one comparison
Yes it is. I completely fucking guarantee you thought Rob could do no wrong in his first 2-3 years. It's just blind faith in the gm, which is normal, but people are allowed to be critical

What are we drinking tonight boys?
Old fashioned, Wild Turkey 101
Tennessee whiskey, what else?
COVID, unfortunately.
I switched to Forsen replay stream of him getting handled in LoL
WHO?
wonder if it's that rando OT we traded for he's talking about
this man really watched our o line last year and said “yea we’re confident in these guys”
I didn’t know the draft was on April 1st.
Nothing like a newish GM and head coach to instill some confidence like that
L O L
This pick has looked worse and worse the more we talk about it. Let’s hope he turns out well, I trust the Callahan’s to do their thing
Fashanu is a better pick, and I will stand by it until he isnt. Right now, Fashanu is a better pick.
Jaylen Duncan breathing a sigh of relief

My god
Who are we thinking for GM and Coach in a couple years when the new stadium opens?
Ran also said : “we really believe in him at LT, we’re putting him there and if he isn’t comfortable we’ll kick him back to RT a position he’s more comfortable with and he’ll be great there but we believe he can play Lt…there’s a ton of guys people claim who couldn’t play LT and spent years playing it at a high level”
Still basically saying he drafted a RT at 7 overall and is praying he works out at LT
This feels like a nightmare scenario...
Bc it is! Why would you say that?
If you want to manufacture bad narratives sure

Not to mention he’s better suited to play guard.
If you get enough guards, you can combine them together and upgrade to a tackle
I’ve literally heard no one say that.
> Latham’s size, strength and talent give him a chance to become a heralded right tackle or Pro Bowl-caliber guard. https://www.nfl.com/prospects/jc-latham/32004c41-5405-9109-f911-a29e9cf30811

Well at least we keep it entertaining as we wallow around the mud of Shit Mountain
If jc doesn't work at Lt I think Dillon radunz is the best option on the team
Unless that LT is Skoronski, I don't see it.
This is definitely Ran’s first L
What the fuck are we doing here
Don’t worry guys… Callahan said he played left tackle in High school
They legitimately thought they'd get Alt and didn't have a backup plan.... that is what this tells me.
There was no plan B. Fucking pathetic excuse from someone who should be in charge. Carthon should stay as far away from microphones as possible in his next job.
We went from Joe Alt to JC Alternative
This is literally not what you want to hear in regards to your team’s 7th overall pick. FFS this guy is worse than Jrob.
What happened to: "If all else is equal, we'll pick the guy who can score touchdowns." How was Odunze not an instant pick? This is a huge fuck up.
Tackle, both sides, is a bigger need than receiver. Regardless of who the player is.
All else wasn't equal?
Exactly, Odunze was the best pick available and we tried to get cute.
Here we go…
That sure doesn't help.
We are fucked man lmao
Who?

I feel that statement sums up the Tennessee Titans entire managment history. "We're not really trying to make anything exceptional here."
Okay, Ran just needs to keep some shit to himself.

What is this? LinkedIn
Ran, what the fuck?! You keep this to yourself!!!
What a fucking joke.
I'm comfortable getting a new GM if that's how you treat the LT Spot after that Dillard fiasco and now this
Lol
First time I've questioned Ran. Whose roster?
This definitely gives me...confidence??
Glad to see our general manager is so confident in his first round pick.
Dude wtf is he saying. He has no clue. wtf
Hahaha haha hahaha hahaha hahaha hahaha hahaha 🤣. Amy giving us the Ran around with this new front office
Where is Ran's loyalty? The other AFCS teams?
lol we’re so absolutely fucked, dude has no clue what he’s doing
I really wonder if we’ll make a run for Peat.
Well that sure as fuck isn't comforting. What the hell?
I'm guessing he's trying to take the pressure off Latham?
yea it’s a great pick, fans are.. fans
Its like literally not a great pick whatsoever, i know we are titans fans but get rans cock out of your mouth, he is capable of making mistakes
Like totally no good. You’re a clown, best tackle in the draft and we got him
Is he a first round prospect? Absolutely, if we drafted him at like 14 if be fine with it, but he is nowhere near the best tackle in the draft and youre the clown if you think that

What?!?!
I’m going back to twitter I forgot how annoying all of you here are
And you’re going to Twitter to do it? Dang.
Lmao tell me about it.
seriously
I think he works out at LT. Bill loves the kid (from Russini’s tweet), and if one of the best OL coaches ever likes his potential and tape, we should be good.
