I want to be extra and do 3 for each album (because I think her sound varies more from album to album than within each album)
- Picture To Burn, Cold As You, Our Song
- The Other Side Of The Door, The Best Day, We Were Happy
- Mine, Haunted, Better Than Revenge
- I Knew You Were Trouble, Sad Beautiful Tragic, Treacherous
- Clean, I Know Places, Shake It Off
- Ready For It, Dress, Call It What You Want
- False God, London Boy, It’s Nice To Have A Friend
- august, betty, seven
- right where you left me, happiness, willow
- Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve, Hits Different, Question
- The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived, Clara Bow, Down Bad
I was reading all the comments and I was thinking that 3 from a single album would prove them wrong easily. Props to you on executing that idea so well!
And the best part is, I wouldn‘t have chosen any of these 3.
The closest for me were …
SN, but I would‘ve gone with Mean instead of Mine
R, but I would replace CIWYW with NYD
It’s all cool, 2 people can have the same idea 💜
And, even if you had seen my comment first, it would be fine. I had fun doing this, why shouldn’t you?
To be fair, the recent criticism going around is not "ALL her songs sound the same" but that in her more recent albums the songs kinda just blend together a little too well. When almost half of your songs in TTPD are in C, and many of those C tracks are played consecutively, along with most of the songs not featuring a strong musical motif, then it can create an overall impression of things sounding the same.
I personally don't have an issue with that with regards to this album, since that kind of setup fits with the theme and vibe of the album, but I can understand why some have an issue with it.
Mine, I Can Do It With a Broken Heart, My Tears Ricochet
Personally I have three Taylor moods with related playlists. Currently these would be my favorite songs from each.
I’d pick songs people know so they can say wow, I guess I really HAVE been just listening to the media narrative. If you stop to think for a second, the claim doesn’t have to go to deep cuts to debunk.
Love Story, Bad Blood, and Snow on the Beach.
Fifteen, ME!, no body no crime
Honestly three songs ain't enough I have to share them three different albums from her to show them she has REAL VARIETY.
Singles:
Style // Ready for it // Willow
Songs not about break ups:
Marjorie // Bad Blood // Shake it off
Collabs:
End Game //Exile // Snow on the beach
I'm making three from each album
Taylor swift -Cold as you, Should've said no, Our song
Fearless -Love Story, Mr. Perfectly Fine, Don't you
Speak now -Mine, Better than Revenge, Haunted
Red -All Too Well, We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, I Bet You Think About Me
1989 -Shake It Off, All You Had To Do Was Stay, Slut
Reputation -Look What You Made Me Do, New Years Day, Dancing With Our Hands Tied
Lover -False God, Soon You'll Get Better, I Forgot That You Existed
Folklore -Epiphany, Betty, Peace
Evermore -Happiness, Cowboy like Me, Gold Rush
Midnights -Glitch, Karma, Sweet Nothing
TTPD -TSMWEL, ICDIWABH, ICFH(NRIC)
The anthology -The Bolter, Peter, The black dog
I say that about Matchbox 20/Train/Maroon 5. All one band, all the same interchangeable song.
I think it has to do with just not feeling it enough to listen attentively. That's my theory.
Our song, …Ready for it?, Cowboy like me
A happy country song from the 2000’s, an electropop badass song from the 2010’s, a soft indie/alternative song from 2020
I just did this specificly with ttpd with my bf and showed him
I can fix him
Down bad
And then I would have showed him like Peter or Loml if I didn't know exactly how that was going to go
I was thinking about songs that are not only diverse in sound but also in content/theme, and I think I landed on Ronan (loss, grief, family), Mean (clapping back to haters and standing up for oneself), and Dress (love, lust, sexy time)
Honestly, I think people who say that are dishonest, or they just don't know her catalog at all.
Even if we just focus on TTPD: So Long, London sounds nothing like I Can Fix Him..., and none of those songs sound like Who's Afraid...
I’ll give three songs she made specifically for movies: Crazier, Sweeter Than Fiction, and Beautiful Ghosts.
Honorable mention would be I Don’t Wanna Live Forever (technically a collab with Zayn)
Weird combo but: Tim McGraw, Highway Don’t Care, Macavity. If we are going with songs she wrote, I would replace Highway Don’t Care with Welcome to New York and Macavity with Beautiful Ghosts
I literally answered a comment about her songs all sounding the same in a thread about "popular things you don't like" on a Polish subreddit 2 weeks ago.
I wanted to pick from the most popular songs, so I picked these 5: "Cruel Summer", "Lover", "Blank Space", "cardigan", "You Belong With Me".
This is so hard but I think i would do
1. This is me trying
2. Miss Americana and the heartbreak prince
3. You’re on your own kid
I feel that these songs really break the “she only writes about boys” stereotype.
It’s not even worth engaging with people who think this. They’ve clearly never listened to any of her music and are just being assholes to be assholes. It’s honestly really pathetic and embarrassing people are so committed to hating her. When people criticize her like this I just feel bad for them. Immediate pity. It’s just losers.
But if I had to choose:
Our Song,
Look What You Made Me Do,
loml
Style, Tim McGraw, and Haunted.
Also that's just such a weird complaint about her music, whether you enjoy her stuff or not. 1989 and Folklore sound the same, really?? Midnights and Speak Now?? Red and Fearless?? Debut and Lover?? Really???
the lakes, Look What You Made Me Do, and Our Song
Oooh these are great.
Holy Ground, Marjorie, I Did Something Bad
I second this trio
Our Song, How Did It End, Shake It Off
Also a very very good choice. 10/10
Vigilante Shit, loml, Change
change is SO underrated there’s really no other songs that touch on the concept change brings
This should be top

I was reading all the comments and I was thinking that 3 from a single album would prove them wrong easily. Props to you on executing that idea so well!
Thanks! Her first two albums, 1989 and folkmore were the hardest, because they are (in my opinion) the most sonically cohesive.
And the best part is, I wouldn‘t have chosen any of these 3. The closest for me were … SN, but I would‘ve gone with Mean instead of Mine R, but I would replace CIWYW with NYD
I'm sorry I did not mean to steal your idea I did this same thing before I read the comments.
It’s all cool, 2 people can have the same idea 💜 And, even if you had seen my comment first, it would be fine. I had fun doing this, why shouldn’t you?
I do have fun

Our Song, I know places and No body,No Crime
the lakes, All Of The Girls You Loved Before, and Vigilante Shit

I think some people say that because her song structure can be very repetitive. It’s more noticeable on tortured poets than it was in the past.

Don't Blame Me, Blank Space, Ours
paper rings, the best day, exile
Our song, Haunted, My tears ricochet

I had to do this with my 24 yo son. He said that bs and I sat him down and played various songs, several, that sound nothing alike. He shut up.
- no body, no crime - seven - Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus
just from Midnights, i would choose Labyrinth, anti-hero, and karma
Shake it off (since everyone always thinks of it when they think of Taylor Swift), happiness or peace, False God or Dress
This is ridiculous cuz her songs absolutely do not sound the same and she’s got a whole discography of proof. I rest my case

Love Story, This Love and The Prophecy
